Dear Brother Knights,
Christ is risen Alleluia!
We have just concluded a very busy month and hopefully learnt a lot during the
season of Lent. We showed our support for our Pro Life Program, 40 days for Life
when we as a community came forward on April 6th
to spend the day in front of the
Women’s Hospital for our fight against the abortion clinics and to preserve and
save the lives of the unborn. We hope through all our efforts and prayers we are
able to save more lives. We will be having another opportunity of fighting for this
great cause at our ‘March for Life’ in Victoria on May 8, 2014. I urge you as parents,
fathers and catholic men to note the date and make every effort to join us as a
council when we proceed to Victoria for the day.
April also saw the canonization of two great Popes John XXIII and John Paul II on
April 27th
, the feast day of the Divine Mercy down at the PNE. It was very gratifying
to see so many brothers knights from all over the lower mainland come out to help
and participate at this historic event. I can still recall Pope John Paul ll visit to my
home town some 30 odd years ago and the number of people that had flocked
from all different cities to see him and attend mass celebrated by him.
We just concluded our 103rd
BC and Yukon Convention and can proudly say that we
are still one of the most vibrant and active councils in BC and Yukon and managed
to bag another 6 awards again this year, not to forget we still have to receive our
Star council award.
We start our month of May with our Daily Rosary every evening and I urge all
Knights and family members to come join us in praying the Rosary for the sanctity
of life, for the unborn, for the right to live and die in peace, for peace in the world
and for our Pope that through his actions many may come back to the faith.
God Bless!

FIELD AGENT’S MESSAGE
Jose P. Cabalu, FIC, CHS Field Agent
Don't Assume You Can't Afford Disability Income Insurance
One of the biggest mistakes you can make regarding disability insurance is to assume
you can't afford it or you won't qualify. Before you make that assumption, do some basic research and apply for coverage through the Knights of Columbus. The Order’s
Income Armor product gives you options that can help you fit this critical protection into your risk management budget.
Here are two ways you can reduce your premium:
1. Choose a two-year or five-year maximum benefit period.
Depending on your age, the best option is probably a policy that pays benefits until you reach age 67. But a two-year or five-year duration benefit period would cover disabilities you might encounter in your working life.
2. Choose a longer elimination period.
An elimination period is the number of days a total disability must exist before
benefits begin to accrue. Typical elimination periods are 30, 90, or 180 days. Choosing a longer elimination period lowers the policy’s premium. But be sure you have enough
set aside in your contingency fund to account for the longer gap.
As your professional insurance agent, risk management is my specialty. Let’s talk
about how to protect your income, your retirement needs, and your family's financial future.

An Update from our Prolife Couple DGK Lorenzo and Julie Ranada
When God gives you a beautiful day, family, friends, church community… you can only say “Thank you!” and wish the same gift upon others.
90-strong we stood on the 33rd day of the 40 Days for Life Vigil at BC Women’s Hospital, praying that mothers would welcome the gift of life and that all Canadians would protect the sanctity of human life, especially at the most vulnerable stages. April 6 was St. Paul Parish’s day to fill, from 6am till 8pm. Rosary after rosary, chaplet after chaplet, litany after litany… united in prayer with the saints and our Blessed Mother, invoking the mercy of God to bring an end to abortion, to change hearts and minds of mothers, fathers, medical workers, neighbours.
During this spring campaign, we know of at least 663 babies across the world spared from death by abortion as their mothers walked away from the abortion facility and told prayer warriors that they had a change of heart. This comes on top of the 8,245 lives saved since 2007 when the first national 40 Days for Life campaign was held. 88 workers have quit their jobs and 45 abortion clinics have shut down over those 7 years.
Lives saved, souls saved… to quench Jesus’ thirst on the Cross. An hour of Lent well spent!

Once again District #23 was Host to the 103rd BC and Yukon AGM 2014 that was held at the Sheraton Hotel in Richmond BC. The convention was organised and run by our PGK, FDD and
Convention Chairman Bro Kevin Pinto who has now stepped down after 3 successful conventions and has passed the baton to our current DD Bro Ed Panes, and we are confident that under his Chairmanship we will have another successful BC and Yukon AGM next year. There was a fairly good representation from council 6855 and I would like to thank those brothers who came out to help with Registration, Liturgy, Setup, Audio/Video and attended the business sessions and dinners with us and special thanks to our very new brothers, Dat Viet Van who headed the Registration from start to finish and ably assisted by Bro Bernard Ter Stege. Brothers Leo Yuan Ping, Jonathan D’cruz, Raphael Teotico and Felix Tan who came to help with Audio/Video and also attended the business session and gained some experience of
what the business session covers and a better understanding of the bigger picture to the Knights of Columbus. Our thanks also to our performers, entertainers and DJ who once again were from 6855 and rightfully deserve praises for a well planned and executed performance. It was a convention where the hard work and dedication of individuals, councils and different programs were recognised and I am once again proud to say that we came away with 6 awards which included 3 awards for the 2nd time in succession; For most ceremonials performed, For our Life Issues and for the most Active Council in the whole of BC and Yukon. We also received the award for the Youth Program (Spring Break Sports for the Youth), For highest number of wheelchairs donated by our council, and Highest Net Gain in Insurance Program. It also goes to show that your hard work and dedication to the various programs we run has once again been appreciated by the State Officers and it’s indeed an honor for me to represent this council as the Grand Knight.

The Knights of Columbus has been supporting this organisation since 2003 and has become a partner in providing this wonderful service to our brothers and sisters in this world. So far the foundation has been able to reach those that are stricken by War, Old Age, Sickness and other forms of calamites in this world and has delivered wheelchairs free of cost to places such as Cuba, Mexico, Poland, Philippines, Afghanistan, Iraq, Dominican Republic and also here at home in Canada and the USA just to name a few.
The Mission of this foundation is
- Raising awareness of the needs and
abilities of people with physical disabilities.
- Delivering mobility into the lives of those who have no means to acquire a wheelchair.
- Transforming lives through Mobility, and with it giving Freedom, Dignity & Hope.
If you would like to know more about this wonderful organisation please visit the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation Booth set up at each pancake breakfast or visit the website www.cdnwheelchair.ca.
Our Wheelchair Drive has been growing steadily and to date to we have donated a total of 53 wheelchairs equivalent to $7,950. We are grateful to those brothers that have shown compassion and came forward to lend their monetary support, and to those friends and acquaintances that have put their trust in us and have donated generously for this cause. We were awarded the ‘Highest Council Contribution Award’ at the AGM. We are still in need of all your compassion and generosity to reach our ultimate target of 100 wheelchairs and I am confident that all brothers and families will do our council proud by showing your support. Remember that the $150 you donate towards a new wheelchair not just gets a wheelchair to an individual but actually transforms their life for good and gives them an opportunity to lead a more meaningful life, thanks to your generosity.

Brothers please join me in congratulating our Family of the Month for April Bro Alberto and Alma, Joyce and Robert Nisperos. Bro Alberto has been with our council since November 1997 and has taken an active part in our council activities. He took on the role of Financial Secretary and has always been actively involved in many of the programs that we run. He is also involved in the community and parish committees for many years and also serves as a Eucharistic Minister and Usher Coordinator among other things. He is a Comptroller for the 4th Degree and also the Guard Commander for Ceremonial affairs. He has served on the State Council as the Family Life Director and Silver Rose and Travelling Icon Coordinator. Alma on the other hand is a member of the CWL, is actively involved with the Vincent De Paul Society, The Adoration Chapel, the parish office and a variety of community groups. Both support the Perpetual Adoration Chapel and are regular committed members. They can be seen each Saturday morning cleaning and preparing the Church for Sunday Mass. They love dancing and are the core members of the Dancercize group. They are always on hand to lend their support to brothers and members of the parish community. Their son Robert has recently joined the Knights and is a big support to the organisation and a big support to his parents as well. Their daughter Joyce was an active member of the parish organisations but with 2 little kids has not much of free time to support any groups at the moment but still keeps herself updated with all parish activities.
Congratulations Nisperos Family, you are a great blessing to our Council and to the parish at large. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication.
Brothers please join me in congratulating Bro Peter Se as being chosen the
Knight of the Month for April 2014. Bro Peter has been a member of this council since 2009 and has lent his
support to a variety of events. He can been seen helping out at our pancake breakfast and is there without
fail early morning to make sure things are underway and all preparations are looked after.
We are grateful to have such members that take a keen interest in serving our community every month
through our pancake breakfast and helping out in the community in whatever way he can. He can be seen
also at mass and is always ready to help with any duties for the parish.
Bro Peter has a very quiet nature but is a very devoted member and we recognise him for his assistance and
support to our brotherhood. Thank you Bro Peter for all your hard work and support. God Bless.
