Grand Knight's Sept MessageBrother Knights:

It has certainly been a busy summer for Council 9132, starting with our smoked pork butt sale in early July and ending with our Habitat for Humanity build weekend in late August. In between we had the second annual Ice Cream Social, BRASS and our annual golf outing. We participated in the Medal of Honor parade, the Fraternus fundraiser, several parishioner assistance projects as well as numerous other activities.

It is great to see many of our newer brother Knights not only participating but taking leading roles in these events. With all of your support and participation we have already fulfilled some of the Supreme Council’s requirements for activity hours in this fraternal year. Of course that will not stop us from continuing to do what we do - serve our parish and our community. Remember - Do what you can, whenever you can. Your participation is important!

It was a great moment for our council when we started off this fraternal year with a First Degree Exemplification where we inducted eleven new members into our order. By the recollection of several veteran knights this was our largest First Degree class ever. Congratulations to membership chairman and DGK Tom Ashton for this huge success. I also want to thank all of you who sponsored a new member. If you have ever sponsored a new member be sure to encourage them to advance in the degrees of knighthood. Check this newsletter or our council web site for details on several upcoming opportunities.

Our next First Degree Exemplification will be at the November council meeting. The best way to recruit new members is through our actions. As we continue to perform service to our parish and community we recruit men who see what we do and want to be a part of it. St. Francis of Assisi said it best- preach the Gospel at all times, use words only when necessary.

Remember life is about who we become not what we do and what we have.

Knights Help at Fraternus Fund Raising DinnerSeveral Knights answered the call from The Parish Fraternus group to help the youth serve at the annual Fraternus Fund Raising dinner. Those who helped at the very successful event were Steve Bollig, Doug Ebelhar, Dick Emery, Dallas Scott, Harry Valentino, Larry Vessels, and Ken Williams.

Golf Tournament - Again a SuccessThis years golf tournament, held on August 22nd, was a huge success for the council. The weather was great and from the round of applause we got for the volunteers at the closing lunch everyone really enjoyed themselves. At last count we raised over $10,000 while having fun.

Our Knights donated over 200 hours of their time along with their wives and families. The list of winners would be too long to publish as there were 3 flights and prizes for 1st through 3rd place in each flight. There were also prizes for men’s and women’s longest drive and closest to the pin.

We had putting contests, a 50/50 for closest to the pin, and a par 5 where you could pay to play from the 150 yard mark. All of these were manned by our knights and families along with the two hole in one contests with larger prizes.

Our gifts team did a great job getting donations for door prizes and goodie bags and several Knights worked to draw in 39 sponsors. The individual activity coordinators did a great job and the whole thing went off smoothly. We did have one minor accident at the tournament but the person involved was well enough to attend Mass on Sunday and still had a smile on his face.

We thank God for all his gifts and especially your help, friendship, and support. - Paul Dana

Editor PS - Co-chairs Paul and Jason Allman and their whole team deserve many thanks for putting on another great tournament.

Assembly Provides Honor Guardfor Nashville Salutes

Members of Bishop Joseph Durick Assembly 2389 provided the Color Corps for Sir Knights from Assemblies all across Tennessee marching in a parade honoring Congressional Medal of Honor Recipients at “A Tribute To Our Country’s Greatest Heroes”. The announcer at the parade introduced the Knights marching saying,”The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, representing Assemblies from all across the State of Tennessee, under the direction of District Marshall Ernest Plus, and led by the Bishop Joseph Durick Assembly Color Corps.”

Twenty-nine of the seventy-nine living recipients of our country’s highest honor were present for a three day event entitled Nashville Salutes. Brother Knights and their families had the opportunity to meet the recipients and learn more about “The Medal” with members of the greater Nashville community.

I would like to thank everyone involved in this event for their hard work and service to help us in honoring some of our nations greatest heroes. It was a fine day for the K of C. Knights from our Assembly. Those who marched were Tom Ashton, Doug Blake, Tony Calderon, Ed Corbitt, Chris Hentges, Glen Word, and Thorn Schoch.

Doug Blake.

One day I was walking down the beach with some friends when someone shouted, ‘Look at that dead bird!'

Someone looked up at the sky and said, 'where?'

Did You KnowThat the Knights of Columbus is committed to assisting our Christian

brothers and sisters who are suffering in the Middle East? That total play time in a football game averages 11 minutes? That Supreme has donated more than $4 million to relief efforts in

Iraq and Syria through the Knights of Columbus Christian Refugee Relief Fund?

That since the NFL was formed in 1922 the Chicago Bears are the only team not to change its name or city?

That you can go to christiansatrisk.org to learn more about this humanitarian emergency and to make a donation that will provide material assistance to these refugees?

That every NFL football is made in a Wilson factory in Ada, Ohio?

Fraternal Benefits NewsThe Advantages of Children’s Policies

It’s quiet at home, now that the kids have gone back to school. If you and your spouse have sufficient life insurance for yourselves, you may want to investigate policies for your children.

There are a variety of reasons why the Knights of Columbus encourages members to consider purchasing policies for their children. The most important one is that someday, your children will go off to college, start careers, buy homes, get married, and have families of their own. By starting low-cost children’s policies now, you can help them meet this future need.

A guaranteed purchase option rider lets your child purchase additional coverage on six future occasions without evidence of insurability. Doing so will cost much less than if they have to purchase their own policies as adults.

Moreover, what if your child develops a medical condition later on? If you’ve already started the policy, this won’t be an obstacle to obtaining coverage – nor will your child be placed in a prohibitive rate class.

Last but not least, the cash value of a permanent life insurance policy is one more source of funds for meeting your child’s future financial needs. What’s more, the cash value increases over time and any dividend declared will increase these values.

Helping to secure a more financially stable adulthood tomorrow for a member’s child today is a worthwhile endeavor for a fraternal benefit society such as the Knights of Columbus. It’s also a logical extension of our Order’s mission to “Make a Difference for Life.”

A Spiritual MessageWe don't come to God by doing it right; we come to God by doing it wrong! Sounds a bit crazy right? No, not at all. Real transformation happens when people have lost their foundation and ground, and then experience God upholding them so that they come out even more alive on the other side. This is what Fr. Richard Rohr describes as the path of descent. When we fall, we fall into union with God.

Often we look "up" to find God. In reality, we are often "getting up." We have all had experiences in life when we feel that we are completely down and out. We may feel that things cannot get any worse. It is precisely these times that God is closest to us. Gods ways are not our ways. We may feel that God is closest to us when we are doing well. It's really just the opposite.

We can look to the Gospels for some clues. Jesus obviously spent quite a bit of time with the sinners of the day. As a matter of fact, it appears he had little time for the do-gooders. He poured out his love and wisdom upon the downtrodden. Jesus is not concerned with our petty pursuit of perfection or worldly success. He is concerned, however, with drawing us closer to him and his mercy.

Don't be discouraged. Trust in the Lord in everything. Get up off the mat when life comes at you like a freight train. Try praying for healing and forgiveness instead of what you may think you need. Pray for anything you want, but try to leave 'you' out of it. Develop a sincere effort to become what God has always asked of you. Love God before anything else, and love your neighbor as yourself. God bless.

Why do cows wear bells? Because their horns don’t work.

Ten (10) Things I know about you1) You are reading this. 2) You are human. 3) You can 't say the letter ''P'' without separating your lips. 4) You just attempted to do it. 6) You are laughing at yourself. 7) You have a smile on your face and you skipped No. 5. 8) You just checked to see if there is a No. 5. 9) You laugh at this because you are a fun loving person & everyone

does it too. 10) You are probably going to send this to see who else falls for it.

Knights Help with MovesIn August Council Knights helped two OLOL parishioners with their furniture moving needs: Ginger DuBose who was temporarily storing their furniture before a future move and Janice and Bobby Kane who needed a U-Haul rental truck loaded.

The first phase of Ginger DuBose’s move coordinated by Doug Blake was completed on Thursday, Aug 20 evening. Some appliances and furniture were moved into a pod to be stored until sometime in November when she will be moving in to her new home. Special thanks to Doug, Chris Hentges, Mark Pence, Mike Crum, and Glen Word for working in the rain and keeping the furniture dry and secure. We will also be helping her with the move in. Watch for the help request in your email.

Tom Mikulski coordinated the Kane move. Janice and her husband were extremely appreciative of the support from the Knights to load up the UHaul rental on August 27. Special thanks to the following Knights - Tom, Jim McNally, Bob Gillespie, Jim Odell, Ed Corbitt, Thorn Schoch, and Jim Quirin. Tom says, “We made quick work of this and completed loading the 28 ft. truck in 5 hours.”

Happiness is a direction not a destination.

Upcoming DegreesThere will be a Second Degree Exemplification at St. John Vianney in Gallatin on Sept. 19 at 9:30 am. Also a Third Degree is planned for Clarksville on October 24 at 9 am. For either of these you will need an up-to-date membership card.

If you are interested in either or both, contact Grand Knight Mark at [email protected] or 615-975-4077. This is a great chance for the new Brothers to advance in their degrees of Knighthood.

"be the living expression of God's kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile."

FOCUS Donation and InformationAt the August meeting the council finalized the vote on our annual $500 contribution to FOCUS, Fellowship of Catholic University Students. Doc Bollig spoke at the meeting about this organization which currently has young missionaries at 100 campuses across the country where they work to bring students to Christ through Bible studies and other evangelization efforts.

Focus is based on the belief that the future of the Church is our young people and Doc said that their immediate goal is to double the number of campuses where they have a presence. This goal is within reach as they have a generous benefactor who has donated $75,000 to match any gift. So our gift will be doubled as Focus tries to raise the cost of this expansion.

Several of our OLOL Knights financially support our fellow Knight Jeff Yelle's daughter, Kayla, who has been a FOCUS missionary for several years and is currently at the University of North Florida. Doc suggested that more Knights consider starting a personal relationship supporting a missionary at one of the new sites, especially if it is your alma mater! The list of new campuses will a available at a future meeting.

More information on FOCUS can be found at www.focus.org.

All the toilets in London police stations have been stolen. Police say they have nothing to go on.

Habitat for HumanityOur part of our second habitat build was completed on August 29 as Brother Knights erected all the exterior and interior walls, placed all of the trusses and squared the building. We were unable to deck the roof and wrap the building for lack of help.

The project was very rewarding and helped a single mother of two who will eventually occupy the building.
