WORKING IN SPIRIT

Does this toy shopping cart look familiar to

you? If so, you probably attend one of the

many local places of worship where the St.

Rose Knights of Columbus collect food, toilet-

ries, and baby products for St. Vincent de

Paul.

Typically, the familiar display is set up in the

lobby of a church or temple where congre-

gants are invited to take one or more of the

“reminder tags” available in the cart. The

laminated tags are printed with words like

“tuna”, “beans”, “cereal”, “baby wipes”,

“razors”, etc. On the following Sunday, the

purchased items fill collection boxes destined

for St. Vincent’s Food Locker.

But how did this program get started? Tom

Jennings of the Knights of Columbus provided

some of the history. The Year Round Food

Collection Program for Placer County Fami-

lies in Need began a few years ago when the

Knights were helping with the St. Rose of

Lima Christmas Basket Program. It‘s a won-

derful idea - feeding 100’s of local people

over the holidays. But Ed Silva had an even

bigger idea…”Let’s feed the whole Southern

(Placer) County.”

Tom and Ed started looking around and soon

realized that St. Vincent de Paul would be the

perfect partner for their project. With the con-

sent of St. Vincent’s board (that was a no-

brainer!) and their fellow Knights anxious to

get started, Tom and Ed took the leap.

Their first step was to make contact with local

places of worship and arrange to make presen-

tations. To their surprise, one church after an-

other said, “Yes”. “Yes...come speak to our

congregation.” “Yes, set up your Grocery

Cart Display in our lobby.” “Yes, we want to

join you to feed our hungry neighbors.”

St. Vincent De Paul

Knights Food Drives (continued)

Today, the list of participating churches includes

Unity Church of Roseville, Roseville 7th Day Ad-

ventist Church, Hillcrest Alliance Church of Rose-

ville, Rocklin LDS Stake (all wards), Bethel Lu-

theran Church of Roseville, St. Mary’s Coptic Or-

thodox Church in Roseville, Shepard of the Sierras

Presbyterian Church in Loomis, Roseville LDS

Stake (9 wards), the Sikh Gurdwara Temple in

Roseville, St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Rock-

lin, the Fellowship Church in Roseville, St. Anna’s

Greek Orthodox Church in Roseville, Ignite

Church of Roseville, Adventure Christian in Rock-

lin, and St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Rose-

ville.

Last summer, Knights Dan Custodio and Tom

Jennings presented a short skit to the Vacation Bi-

ble School classes at St. Matthews. They explained

to the children what a wonderful opportunity they

have to follow Jesus’ teachings by bringing food

for hungry families. The enthusiasm was obvious

when the children and their families’ donations

filled a forklift pallet at St. Vincent de Paul!

The volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul are thrilled

with donations provided by the Knights’ Year

Round Food Collection Program. Before printing

up the “reminder tags” for an upcoming Grocery

Cart Display, Tom calls Karen Clark at the Food

Locker to find out which items are most in need. If

Karen tells him that there’re low on peanut butter,

rice and disposable diapers, then Tom prints up lots

of extra tags for those items.

Since food donations generally rise in the preholi-

day months, the Knights like to focus on January

through October. Their program plan is to target

different churches each month, thereby providing

St. Vincent’s Food Locker with a steady stream of

needed items throughout the year. Whenever Tom

starts worrying about supplying this or that, Karen

reminds him that she’s not concerned…” the Holy

Spirit always provides.”

Round Food Collection Program for Placer

County Families in Need, contact one of these

dio at 916-772-7513, or Tom Jennings at 916-782-

plenty of variety in a classic and inviting setup with

bargains galore!

Everything from clothing, household items and

furniture can be found for a special spring update

for your home. You will find our inventory re-

freshed often with new items to browse and make

your own. Bring your friends to see what treasures

you can find!

Be sure to sign in for email blasts and check with

our media notices on our Facebook page. We want

to make your shopping with us fun and easy to fit

your day.

The Melody Lane store is located at 1000 Melody

Lane, #109 and is open Monday—Friday from 10

am—6 pm and on Saturday from 10 am—3 pm.

We are always looking for volunteers to help at the

store and with pickup of donations. If you have a

few extra hours to share, please contact us!

There was a lot to be thankful for in Roseville this

year. Right before Thanksgiving, St. Vincent de

Paul gave out over 400 turkeys with all the fixin’s

to local families in need. The distribution took

place in the parking lot in front of the St. Vincent

de Paul Thrift Store on Melody Ln. in Roseville.

St. Vincent is grateful to all of the generous

turkey donors which included the LDS

Church, Assembly Member Beth Gaines,

Pleasant Grove Community Church and Wal-

mart. We had several community members,

including the youth group and Boy Scouts

from the LDS Church help hand out the food

to clients as they drove up to our distribution.

Preregistration for the dinners took place at

St. Vincent de Paul in the weeks before

Thanksgiving. Qualifying families with three

or more members received a turkey, while

families of one and two were given a roasting

chicken along with all the other groceries

needed to prepare a complete Thanksgiving

meal.

The event was so popular that it was repeated in

the days before Christmas along with gift and tree

pickups. A big THANK YOU to everyone who

donated food and everyone who worked to get it

handed out… and blessings on the families who

enjoyed the holiday meals.

5

Turkey Trot With a countdown to ‘GO’ and a mass of energy

waiting to explode across the line, the Roseville

Turkey Trot began its race early on a beautiful

Thanksgiving morning in downtown Roseville.

St. Vincent de Paul was there in all of the excite-

ment as we provided volunteers for the event stuff-

ing gift bags, registering the runners and, of course,

providing helpers on the day of the event to guide

runners along the trail and keep the run flowing

smoothly. SVDP received funding for the volun-

teer hours provided, which helps us financially

continue our programs. We were also blessed by an

outpouring of donated food brought by the runners

and spectators which was quickly relayed to our

food locker for families in the coming months.

Many thanks to the City of Roseville, especially

Jeff Nereson and Dominick Casey with the Parks

and Recreation Dept. A Special thanks also to the

SVDP staff and the well over 100 volunteers who

helped make the 2014 run such a fun happening!

St. Vincent de Paul is also proud of one of our own

volunteers, Ken Rumenapp, who took third place in

his division of the 5K. Good job Ken!

If you would like to know more about the 2015

Roseville Turkey Trot and how you can help,

please call us at 916-781-3303. Looking forward to

another great annual run!

Your Gift Today Will Give Hope Tomorrow

St. Vincent de Paul of Roseville was recently chosen by local WalMart management to be a part of

their Volunteerism Always Pays program ( VAP ). They asked for the opportunity to work on a pro-

ject for our food locker, and we told them about our turkey distribution project. Walmart donated tur-

keys and helped out by putting together 400 bags of Thanksgiving meal staples to hand out with the

turkey distributions this year. We appreciated their willingness and passion in serving others in their

community by taking on this project!

Recently, WalMart managers have also taken on the task of being a regular scheduled group at our

dining hall. We understand

they have some amazing cooks

in their staff that really want to

show their skills to our guests!

Thanks so much for all of your

help!

Fundraiser Dinner

The evening was set for a delicious meal, delightful enter-

tainment and wonderful company! St. Vincent de Paul of

Roseville celebrated their 31st anniversary with a fundraiser

dinner on September 27th at the Morris Hall of St. Clare

Parish. Dinner was provided by the cooking team of the

Knights of Columbus at St. Clare. Our emcee, Randy Strick-

lin, kept the evening rolling while we enjoyed lots of fun

entertainment provided by the Dean O Holics! The wonder-

ful assortment of raffle items, generously donated by many

of our supporters, provided everyone lots of opportunities to

go home with a special prize.

In addition, SVDP honored Jack Conti and Pleasant Grove

Community Church (PGCC) as our deserving volunteers of

the year. Jack has been an important contact for St. Joseph

Marello Church in gathering food donations as well as a

BAGS volunteer. PGCC has been delivering the Wednesday

morning BAGS since the inception of the program, help at

the dining hall and also gather food for our food locker each

month from their church. Thank you all for your service!

We have some great new ideas for this year’s

upcoming fundraiser dinner. Watch for our no-

tices online at www.placersvdp.com and in our

newsletter so that you can come and enjoy a

wonderful evening with us.

See you this fall!
