KNIGHT OF THE

MONTH

Our Worthy Financial

Secretary Bill Wester is Knight

of the Month for April. Bill does

a lot more than keep the books

for EDW. There are a myriad of

forms and reports that both

Supreme and State require

unceasingly, and he makes sure

we remain in good standing as a

council. He attends the quarterly training events at the

state meetings and has passed on valuable lessons

learned. He is also Assistant Treasurer for the

Columbus Club and helps us manage both the business

end of our corporation, and the many administrative

details of constantly changing membership, as well as

other charitable and fraternal activities. Thank you,

Brother Bill!

FAMILY OF THE MONTH

This month we recognize the many volunteers who

serve us at our monthly EDW Family Breakfasts. With

so many hands there is always the risk of overlooking

some key people, but I’ll make a go of it anyway: Tom

Maguire, Mike West, Leslie Waldrup, Chris Kane,

Steve Libera, Walter Burnett, Danny Valentini, Dave

Lackey, Vince Dufrane, Charlie Boone, Jay Denneny,

Collin McGowan, Paul Kozich, John O’Neill III, Greg

Strizek, IPGK Chris Bannon, PGK Steve McTeague,

PGK Bob Dannemiller, and PGK Kenny Goss.

From our exceptional family of breakfast volunteers

to your families, we have much to be thankful for.

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE He is risen as he said, Alleluia! After forty days of

Lent, the celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord is

a joyful way to begin April. The Easter Egg reminds

us of the new life we have received through Baptism,

and many receive this first sacrament as they become

members of the Church at the Easter Vigil. When you

dip your hand in the blessed water as you enter and

exit the church, recall both the cross (as you make The

Sign and recite the simple Trinitarian “teaching

prayer”), and the resurrection (as you recall your new

life in the risen Lord in the water of Baptism, and the

baptismal vows you renew every Easter). A lot can

happen in a moment - don’t let that moment slip by without a thought to the deep

significance the act represents. It prepares you for your encounter with the Lord

both as you enter the House of God, and as you leave it for the world outside. It’s a

simple but beautiful thing we all too often do as habit.

45 EDW Knights took their Knighthood (Third) Degree in the Main Hall on

March 11th. I congratulate you all on your advancement in the Order. Many

thanks to all who assisted with the degree. The honoree for this event was

Brother Albert Willson, Jr., a 55-year Knight and long-time Red Coat who

passed away last December 11th.

There will be a “New Knight” Social in the Council Home on April 19th at

7:30 pm. Council Officers will also hold a brief meeting to take care of business

in one of the Council Home meeting rooms. I would like to take this opportunity

to informally welcome our new Knights, and to invite them, and any other EDW

Knights to bring prospective candidates for our upcoming May and June

Admissions degrees.

Don’t forget that our EDW Blood Drive will be held on the same day as the

April Family Breakfast (15th). Also, there is an opportunity for any Third

Degree Knights to advance by taking the Patriotic (4th) Degree in Palmyra, VA,

on April 21st. All Third Degree Knights should be in receipt of an email from

me with amplifying information.

This month we have a displaced feast day of great note. The Annunciation of the

Lord is celebrated this month in 2018 since its traditional date (March 25th) conflicted

with Palm Sunday. As we celebrate a new creation of man and woman in the Son and

the Mother, having recalled Our Savior’s words in the Garden of Gethsemane (“Thy

will be done”) and our Blessed Mother’s words at the Annunciation (“Let it be done to

me”), let us strive also to unite our wills to the will of the Father.

Mary Queen of Knights – Pray for us!

Vivat Jesus!

EDW BLOOD DRIVE ON APRIL 15TH

INOVA Blood Donor Services

supplies lifesaving blood and

blood products to 24 different

hospitals in Northern Virginia and

the Washington, DC metro area,

and also works with national and

international redistribution

organizations to get blood where

it’s needed most (like natural

disasters). Sadly, the demand for blood is increasing

while blood donation levels are decreasing. That’s why

your life saving donation is needed more than ever.

Please help INOVA and your Council make a difference

for those in need.

To donate blood you must be at least 16 years old,

weigh 110 lbs and be in good health.

Please consider donating and invite your friends,

co-workers and family (16 years or older), on Sunday

April 15th (Family Breakfast Day!) between 8:30

AM and 1:30 PM at the Council.

Walk-ins are accepted, but you may reserve an

appointment time at: bit.ly/EDWBloodDrive (paste

into your browser) or call INOVA at 1-866-256-6372.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact

Len Sese (Brother Knight) at [email protected]

He is risen, as he said! Allelulia!

THE PAUL STEFAN FOUNDATION

Randy James, President/

CEO ofthe Paul StefanFounda-

tion spoke to the men and

ladies during the open session

of the Virginia State Council

meeting on March 3, 2018 at

St. Mary’s Catholic Church in

Richmond. Randy gave a

presentation on the Regional

Maternity House and Education

Center they are trying to

complete in the coming months

that will allow them to provide assistance such as housing,

education, food, mentoring and spiritual guidance for 25

mothers and their babies.

The Virginia State Council donated $1,000 to kick off

the drive, and the Ladies of Virginia (LOV) graciously

donated $1,000. Our State Deputy Stephen Kehoe asked

each council in the Commonwealth to donate $500.00.

EDW is providing $1,000 to this very worthwhile pro-life

cause, and I ask you all to visit their website at www.

paulstefanhome.org and consider a personal donation.

FOUNDER’S DAY IS MARCH 29TH BUT...

Since Founder’s Day fell on

Holy Thursday this year, the

Saint John Paul II National

Shrine will host a Founder’s Day

Mass and Reception on

Wednesday, April 18th, 2018 at

6:30 pm. The Celebrant and

Homilist will be Fr. Jonathan

Kalisch, O.P., who serves as the

Director of Chaplains for the

Knights of Columbus. Mass will

conc

lude with veneration of a relic of the founder of the Knights

of Columbus, Venerable Fr. Michael J. McGivney.

Admission is free but please RSVP by pasting the following

link into your browser:

so that we can better welcome you, your family, and

your Council to the Shrine.

Father McGivney dedicated his life to the spiritual and

physical welfare of others, creating the Knights of Columbus

to provide insurance for the protection ofwidows and orphans,

and the spiritual benefit of its members and families.

But, beyond charitable works, Father McGivney wanted

each Knight’s heart and mind attuned to greater love of God

and his Son, both within the Church and within the family.

This emphasis on love of God is Father McGivney’s

spiritual legacy.

Through the Knights, Father McGivney sought to form

Catholic men into good spouses and fathers. He has become

known as Apostle to the Young and Defender of Christian

Family Life. He saw strong families as the foundation of his

parish, of the Church and of society at large. He was

convinced that the Catholic layman had a unique role in

influencing society and promoting the values found in

what Pope John Paul II has since named the Culture of Life

and the Civilization of Love. Father McGivney did not use

the vocabulary of the 21st century, but he espoused the same

Gospel values that Catholics affirm today.

Father McGivney had built a way for laymen to make

substantial and enduring contributions to their parishes, to

their communities and to the physical and spiritual security

of their families. And he saw that by doing so, one parish

and community at a time, Catholic families could help build

a better world.

The Feast of the

Annunciation is one of

the most important in the

Church calendar. First, it

celebrates the actual

Incarnation ofOur Savior

- the Word made flesh in

the womb of His mother,

Mary. Second, it is a

principal Marian feast.

Two other feasts

honoring Our Lord’s

mother, the Assumption

(August 15), and the

Council meeting at 7:30 in the Council Home to conduct

THE FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD

The Annunciation of the Lord - by

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Museo

del Prado, Madrid

(December 8), are

celebrated as Holy Days of Obligation in the United

States. New Year’s Day, January 1, is observed as a

Solemnity of Mary. This Feast is traditionally

celebrated on March 25th (9 months before

Christmas), but is moved this year to April 9th to

accommodate the fact that March 25th is Palm

Sunday this year.

The biblical account of the Annunciation is in the

first chapter of the Gospel of St. Luke, which describes

the news given to Mary that she was to become the

mother of the Incarnation of God, records the “angelic

salutation” of Gabriel to Mary, “Hail, full of grace. The

Lord is with thee.” This bit of scripture constitutes the

opening of our “Hail Mary” prayer; and Mary’s

response to God’s will, “Let it be done to me according

to thy word.” Her exultant hymn, the Magnificat, found

in Luke 1:46-55, has been part of the Church’s liturgy

of the hours, at Vespers (evening prayer), and has been

repeated nightly in churches, convents and monasteries

for many centuries.

The significance of this Christian feast on Western

culture is made clear from the fact that New Year’s Day

used to be celebrated on March 25th. This was the case

in England until as late as 1752. [Adapted from: https://

HONOR FLIGHT, YOU & KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS!

A chance to show respect, love & gratitude! Honoring our veterans, especially the World War II generation, is a

tremendous act of patriotism and gratitude and it’s a lot of fun to do as an entire family, as a Boy Scout and Girl Scout troop, a homeroom class or a

sports team! -

It’s real simple and easy to do. Simply show up and line up outside when the buses arrive and cheer and say thank you to our defenders. Then come into the building and help hand

out and provide drinks to the veterans. Please arrive at the main hall 20 minutes prior to the expected arrival times listed below. Stay for 20 minutes or stay for the duration and help

clean up. I guarantee you if you strike up a conversation with one of the men or women who served in WWII you’ll gain an incredible appreciation for what they sacrificed to defeat

Totalitarianism and preserve our freedoms. This is a great way to introduce our children to giving back to our society and caring for each

other. You can encourage the kids to create posters or thank you cards to give to the veterans.

No need to sign up in advance, just show up! -

A FOUNDING NOTION : PROTECTING THE BREADWINNER’S INCOME

While jobs may be safer in 2018, accidents, injuries,

and illnesses that can impact your ability to work still

happen. Most, in fact, do not happen on the jobsite or

place of employment. Did you know that a 2011 study

revealed that more than 95 percent of the long-term

disability claims on file were not work related?

The Knights have always sought to protect members’

families from the “loss” of a breadwinner. I’m sure you

know all about Father McGivney’s vision for our

insurance program. But you may not know that Father

McGivney also wanted to find a way to help members

who couldn’t work because of an illness. After all, the

“loss” of the breadwinner does not have to mean that

person’s death; it can also mean the loss of the

breadwinner’s income.

Consider that loss for a moment. How would your

family fare if a source of income suddenly stopped?

Could a dual-income family manage on one income?

What about young families with a working father and

a mother who cares for the children? What if his

income halted due to an accident or illness?

I’ve heard some people say they have coverage at

work, but too many aren’t sure what this coverage

entails, how much income it would provide or for how

long. Having this protection counts for something,

certainly, but it isn’t “yours”; it’s provided by the

company for which you work at their discretion. It could

be eliminated tomorrow.

That’s where a personally-owned disability income

insurance product, like Income Armor, comes into play.

It can offer valuable income replacement in the event of

an injury or illness. If you have a job, you must know

about this coverage.

LADIES U-KNIGHTED NEWS JO BALSAMO WOOD

April is here, the days are getting longer, and the

temperature is getting warmer. They say that April

showers bring May flowers, but what do May flowers

bring? The Pilgrims, of course! I would like to start

off by welcoming our two newest members, Wendy

Noe and Donna Novitsky.

Thanks to everyone who purchased our hand-made

chocolate Easter pops. If you are still interested in

purchasing pops, please contact Alison at (703) 304-

6639. The cost of each chocolate pop is $3.00 or two for

$5.00. As with all our moneymaking projects, proceeds

go toward refurbishing the Old Council Home or to

support the endeavors of the EDW Council.

Speaking of April Showers . . . join LUK in a virtual

baby shower to support the organization “A Woman’s

Choice” who give women the opportunity to preserve

the lives of their unborn children. LUK is collecting

unwrapped gifts and gift cards between now and May

11. We will transport the donations directly to the

Director of A Woman’s Choice. This is the time to rid

your closet of old baby items. Suggestion for tax-

deductible gifts include: diapers (newborn – 5), pull-ups,

baby wipes, unused bottles and pacifiers, toys, umbrella

strollers, pack n’plays, baby shampoo, lotion, powder,

new or slightly used clothing newborn - 4T, receiving

blankets, bibs, rattles and gift cards. In addition, we are

putting together gift bags for the mothers. We are asking

for donations of small personal items, such as hand

cream, lipstick, notepads, etc. for several gift bags. You

may drop off donations at the LUK closet on the second

floor of the Old Council Home. For more information or to arrange to drop off gifts, please contact Alison at (703) 304-6639 or Kathi at 703-425-6725.

LUK is proud to help financially support endeavors

of the EDW Council. In February we provided two

checks to support the Christians at Risk Campaign and

the Special Olympics Polar Plunge. We

especially would like to thank PGK John White

and his daughter for “taking the plunge.” Brrrrrrrr

It is customary for LUK to wish their members a

happy birthday in the monthly Knight Life article. We

have no members with birthdays in April. Therefore,

we are soliciting members with birthdays in April, as

well as any other month. If you are interested in helping

with these fun events or coming by to meet new friends,

please join us. We meet at 7:30 on the first Thursday of

each month at the Old Council Home. Follow us on

Facebook at Ladies U-Knighted. (Please note that

April’s meeting is on April 12 – the second

Thursday of the month.)

LUK would like to wish a very happy birthday to

two very supportive Knights -- PGK Chris Bannon (4/2) and PGK Kenny Goss (4/11). Wishing everyone

a blessed Easter.
