Signal Input ConnectionsThe GMX control module has three audio inputs (seeFig. 4A): Toslink optical digital, coaxial digital (orangeRCA jack), and stereo analog (red and white RCAjacks). Use these inputs to connect audio sources, suchas a game console, DVD player, CD player, computersound card, or TV set. Whenever possible, use one ofthe digital inputs, since this will allow Dolby Digitalplayback. Fig. 4B illustrates a setup in which a gameconsole, DVD player, and TV set are connected to theGMX D-5.1.

I m p o rtant Note: Each input demands a part i c u l a rtype of cable and a matching output on the sourc ecomponent. The optical digital input re q u i res a To s l i n kf i b e r-optic cable. The coaxial digital input re q u i res acoaxial cable with RCA plugs on each end. To ensurereliable operation, use a cable labeled for video ordigital audio connections. The stereo analog inputre q u i res a pair of ord i n a ry shielded audio cables withRCA plugs on each end. If you are connecting theanalog inputs to a device that has a minijack output, use the supplied miniplug-to-RCA adaptor.

Speaker SetupThe subwoofer re q u i res an AC power connection (donot plug it in until setup is completed). All five satellitespeakers and the control module connect to the sub-w o o f e r, which provides the power for all channels.Set up the speakers as follows:

1) Place the satellite speakers around the area whereyou will be sitting, more or less as illustrated in Fig. 1.The center speaker should be directly above or belowyour TV or monitor (the satellites are magneticallyshielded to prevent picture interf e rence). Place the leftand right front speakers to either side and equidistantf rom the screen. Place the surround (rear) speakers tothe left and right and slightly behind the seating are aand facing in toward it. If possible, all five satellitesshould be about the same distance from the seatinga re a .

2) The subwoofer can go virtually anywhere that isconvenient, but we recommend placing it in the fro n tsoundstage of your system and, if possible, against awall or in a corn e r.

3) Using the five supplied speaker cables, connect theoutputs on the back of the subwoofer to the matchingsatellites, as shown in Fig. 2. The striped wire shouldbe connected to the red speaker term i n a l .

4) Using the supplied multipin DIN cable, connect theDIN output on the back of the system control moduleto the DIN input on the back of the subwoofer (seeFig. 2).

5) The satellite speakers attach to their pedestalbases via a ball socket that allows a very widerange of motion. Adjustments are simple as illustrat-ed in Fig. 3.

ProMedia® GMX D-5.1Welcome to the Klipsch ProMedia® GMX D-5.1speaker system. The GMX D-5.1 is a high-perf o rm-ance powered speaker system consisting of five small, identical satellites and a single subwoofer. It is operat-ed from a compact, easy-to-use control module withbuilt-in Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic II surro u n ddecoders. Although designed primarily for use withgame consoles, such as the Microsoft Xbox™ a n dSony PlayStation® 2, the GMX D-5.1 will also deliverexcellent sound as a multimedia speaker system for apersonal computer or even as the audio portion of asmall home theater.

I M P O RTANT NOTE: Before You BeginDo not plug in the GMX D-5.1 subwoofer’s powerc o rd until all other wiring is completed, and do notdisassemble the system before you have unpluggedthe subwoofer’s power cord. Be especially careful notto connect or disconnect any signal cables whilepower is applied. Failure to observe this caution mayresult in loud hums, buzzes, or pops that will at thev e ry least be annoying and that in the extreme maydamage your speakers.

Power ConnectionsThe last setup steps are the power connections (seeFig. 2). Plug the DC supply cord into the jacklabeled "Decoder Supply" on the subwoofer cabi-net. Next, plug the other end into the jack labeled"DC 7V IN" on the back of the GMX control mod-ule. Plug the subwoofer’s power cord into a walloutlet or AC power strip. Your GMX D-5.1 is nowready to ru m b l e .

The Control ModuleE v e rything you need to run the GMX D-5.1 is on theface of the control module. The function and opera-tion of each control is listed below (see Fig. 4A):

1 ) D i s p l a y. Indicates master volume setting and leveltrim during setup.

2) Volume Pads. P ress the (+) and (-) buttons to raiseor lower the volume. These buttons are also used toadjust the levels of the speakers in the system re l a t i v eto one another (channel balance).

3) P o w e r. Tu rns the system on and off. The red LEDindicates standby mode.

4) I n p u t . P ressing this button selects one of the inputs.Choosing an input will cause its indicator LED abovethe button to light up.

5) S u rro u n d . P ressing this button selects one of theavailable audio modes. Modes that can be used willdepend on the input and type of signal.

• Dolby Digital Signals: If you have selected one ofthe digital inputs, it will automatically switch to thea p p ropriate Dolby Digital mode when a DolbyDigital signal is present. The Dolby Digital indicatorLED (above the Surround button) will light. DolbyDigital modes are available only when a DolbyDigital signal is present at the selected digital input;no surround changes may be made to a discre t eDolby Digital 5.1 signal. The Surround button will beactive in Dolby Digital mode only when the signal istwo-channel stereo, as described immediately below.

• S t e reo Signals: If you have selected the analoginput or a digital input receiving a PCM signal, suchas from a CD, you have a choice of four modes:S t e reo, 5-Channel Stereo, Dolby Pro Logic II Cinemaand Music. The Dolby Pro Logic II modes can alsobe applied to a Stereo Dolby Digital signal. Switchmodes by pressing the Surround button until youreach the one you want, as indicated by the LEDsabove the button. Stereo is indicated when no LEDsa re lit.

6 ) Te s t . This button turns the channel test signal onand off. When on, the LED above the button will lightand you will hear noise for several seconds fro meach satellite speaker in turn. The signal will ro t a t ef rom speaker to speaker in this fashion until you turnit off. This signal has two uses:

• Making sure that all speakers are connected andw o r k i n g .

• Helping you set channel balance. Because the fivesatellites in the GMX D-5.1 are identical, you will usu-ally get correct channel balance automatically. To findout, turn the test signal on and listen; it should beequally loud from each speaker. If not, you can use

the CTR and SURR buttons(described below) togetherwith the volume pads toadjust the level of the sur-round speakers up or downrelative to the front left andright.

The adjustment level trim isf rom -9dB to +9dB, withdefault settings of "0." Note:Possible gain range settings

for each channel are -9dB to +9dB and will beretained as the main volume approaches 60dB. H o w e v e r, new settings made at high volumes willonly be allowed as the total reaches 60dB. In otherw o rds, if the main volume reads 55dB, the boost willbe limited to +5dB, and if main volume is set to 60dB(maximum), no boost is available.

7) Dyn. Comp. Toggles through the three modes ofthe Dolby Digital dynamic compression function.Dynamic compression reduces the level diff e re n c ebetween loud and soft sounds. This can be usefulwhen you are having trouble hearing dialogue clear-ly or when you want to minimize disturbance of oth-ers by very loud sounds. Available modes are "Half,""Full," and "Off"; the selected mode will be indicatedby the LEDs above the button. "Off" selects no com-p ression, whereas "Full" selects maximum compre s-sion. This function is available only when the system isp rocessing a Dolby Digital input.

8) S u b . Allows adjustment of the subwoofer’s re l a t i v elevel. To use, press the button until the indicator LEDlights. Use the volume pads to raise or lower the basslevel until you get the balance of lows to highs thatyou want. The central display will show how muchboost or cut you have applied, in decibels (dB).P ressing the button again until the LED goes out willlock the setting and re t u rn the volume pads to mastermode, controlling overall level. To re t u rn to the origi-nal setting, just turn the control on again and adjustthe level until the display shows "0." Note: This alsoc o n t rols the "SWS Link" output level (see "SWS Link"s e c t i o n ) .

9) S u rr. Allows adjustment of the surround speakers’level relative to that of the front left and right. To use,p ress the button until the indicator LED lights. Use thevolume pads to raise or lower the surround level untilyou get the balance that you want. The central dis-play will show "SR" or "SL" to indicate adjustment ofthe Surround Right or Surround Left output channel, and then switch to indicate how much boost or cutyou have applied in decibels (dB). Pressing the buttononce will allow you to adjust the surround right chan-nel. Pressing the button a second time will allow youto adjust the surround left channel. Pressing the buttonagain until the LED goes out will lock the setting andre t u rn the volume pads to master mode, contro l l i n goverall level. Whenthe incoming signal is decoded in 5-channel stere othe "5 CH Stereo" LED will be lit. The "PLI I" LED willbe lit when Pro Logic II movie mode decoding is tak-ing place. When the "Dolby Digital" LED is lit, theGMX is receiving and decoding a Dolby Digital bit-s t ream. On Dolby Digital 2.0 signals, 5-channels t e reo and Pro Logic decoding can be applied. If oneof these post-processing modes is applied, the appro-priate LED will be lit in conjunction with the "DolbyDigital" LED.

Choosing the Right Sur roundModeThe GMX D-5.1 offers five surround modes, selected via the Surround button on theGMX control module:

• Dolby Digital. This is a discre t e - c h a n-nel digital mode that allows 1- to 5.1-channel re p roduction. (The channelsa re left, center, right, left surro u n d ,right surround, and low-fre q u e n c ye ffects.) The system automaticallyengages Dolby Digital decodingwhen it receives a Dolby Digital sig-nal at one of its digital inputs. It is notavailable with any other sort of signalor when the analog input is selected. The Dolby Digital decoder will configureitself automatically according to the inputsignal. From one to five satellites and thesubwoofer will be active.

• S t e reo. This is the standard mode for the analoginput and for two-channel signals received at a digi-tal input. Only the front left and right satellites and thesubwoofer are active.

• 5-Channel Stere o . Available for all inputs re c e i v i n ganalog or two-channel digital signals. It re d i s t r i b u t e sa stereo signal across the five satellite speakers to givev e ry broad, even coverage. All five satellites and thesubwoofer are active.

• Dolby Pro Logic II. Available for all inputs re c e i v-ing analog or two-channel digital signals. This modep rovides accurate decoding of Dolby Surro u n d -encoded signals and natural, realistic five-channelenhancement of stereo signals. All five satellites andthe subwoofer are active. Dolby Pro Logic II has twos u b - m o d e s :

Cinema (Red LED) - Select for sources that havebeen encoded in Dolby Surro u n d . This includesmany games, TV programs, and movies on video.

Music (Green LED) - This mode is especially appro-priate for stereo music, to which it adds a veryappealing sense of spaciousness and depth.
