SHAPINGTHE FUTURE OF

HEALTHCARE

KARL LANDSTEINER UNIVERSITYOF HEALTH SCIENCES IS A PIONEER

IN INNOVATIVE TEACHING ANDRESEARCH IN MEDICINE AND

HEALTH SCIENCES.

KL - FOR KARL LANDSTEINER.

Lower Austrian-born Nobel Prize winner

Karl Landsteiner laid the foundations

for a host of key medical breakthroughs

with his discovery of blood groups

and the Rhesus factor. Landsteiner’s

outstanding research achievements

and dedication to the field of medicine

are reflected in the values of the

new university that bears his name.

The future demands new perspectives on

health. Solutions need to be found to the

problems caused by growing populations,

longer life expectancies, escalating costs

and the increasing demand for highly skil-

led experts.

Against the backdrop of this shift in health

policy, the university – which was accre-

dited in late 2013 – sees itself as a pioneer

in innovative education and research in

the fields of medicine and health sciences

which will benefit society at large.

As part of a groundbreaking, holistic ap-

proach which sees an understanding of

health as the key to promoting physical,

mental and emotional wellbeing, we have

brought together four disciplines that have

a decisive impact on health policy – health

sciences, human medicine, psychotherapy

and counselling, and neurorehabilitation –

under one roof.

An integrated, interdisciplinary approach is

the cornerstone of the university’s drive to

train the next generation of medical and

health professionals.

As part of the firmly established teaching

and research set-up at Campus Krems,

Karl Landsteiner University offers a cur-

riculum tailored to the needs of students

and the requirements of the Bologna mo-

del, which in turn opens the door to new

health science occupations where world-

wide demand for graduates is strong.

The university’s flexible, open structure

allows it to respond quickly and effectively

to new developments, which raises our

profile when it comes to addressing the

needs of society.

Our network of university hospitals in

St. Pölten, Krems and Tulln will enable us

to provide students with a quality-

assured, research-led education, and

to carry out top-class clinical research

with a strong international reputation.

Karl Landsteiner University of Health

Sciences is the first Austrian tertiary edu-

cation institution to offer a comprehen-

sive range of integrated, interdisciplinary

medical and health sciences degree pro-

grammes in line with the requirements of

the Bologna model.

Small groups, a strong focus on medical

practice and all-round personal support

are the stand-out features of the universi-

ty’s teaching activities. This gives students

the time and space they need to identify

and nurture their personal talents and

build up the necessary specialist experti-

se. We also encourage students to see the

big picture and adopt an interdisciplinary

mindset that allows them to communicate

and work effectively, and identify solutions

geared to patient requirements.

MEETING THE

BOLOGNA STANDARDS

The full-time degree comprises the Health

Sciences bachelor programme and the

supplementary Human Medicine master

programme. Graduates are awarded the

title of Doctor of Medicine (Dr. med.univ.).

Our state-of-the-art curriculum with its

emphasis on biomedical engineering and

health economics opens up prospects in

a number of health-sector professions

besides medical practice, including the

medical documentation and pharma-

ceuticals industries.

PSYCHOTHERAPY- AND

COUNSELLING SIENCES

BACHELOR PROGRAMME

This part-time programme provides high-

quality, theory-driven and research-based

training in psychotherapy and counselling.

Besides preparatory training for further

education in psychotherapy and subse-

quent entry into the profession, the focus

is on supporting the development of basic

scientific skills.

NEUROREHABILITATION SCIENCES

MASTER PROGRAMME

The part-time Neurorehabilitation Scien-

ces master programme is geared towards

introducing additional academic elements

into the therapeutic professions. The pro-

gramme is the first of its kind in Austria to

provide structured, theory-based training

designed to help physiotherapists, and

occupational and speech therapists de-

velop academic abilities, with a view to

studying for a PhD.
