ORINDA EPISCOPAL CHURCH GIVES GENEROUS GRANT TO
HISTORIC MISSION IN SAN FRANCISCO
St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Orinda has awarded an outreach grant of $7,500 to St.
Cyprian’s Episcopal Church in San Francisco to help with its community kitchen
renovation. The repair of St. Cyprian’s kitchen will help children and families in the
Western Addition and North of the Panhandle neighborhood by providing a clean, safe,
and productive space for the preparation of nutritious community meals, food for an
after-school and summer program for at-risk youth, and support for low-income culinary
entrepreneurs. Extensive renovations are needed to make the kitchen usable and create
enough space for the programs the church seeks to serve; total cost of the project is
estimated at $50,000.
At the encouragement of Barbara Bisel, an active member of St. Stephen’s, the grant was
put together by the St. Cyprian’s kitchen team of Jennifer Wolfe, Tiffany Davis, Gigi
Smith, and University of San Francisco student intern Madelene Parks. In preparation for
the remodel, an assessment was completed by Chef Jean-Marc Fullsack, executive chef
of the Hospitality Industry Management Program at USF. He offered suggestions for
space use and layout and his expertise in legal-compliance issues for commercial
kitchens.
St. Cyprian’s seeks to raise additional funds through grants and donor gifts. Both church
communities hope that St. Stephen's generous donation serves as inspiration for
additional parish-to-mission partnerships, and that other churches in San Francisco and
around the region will join us in supporting our kitchen renovation.
Founded in 1923 in the Chapel of Grace at Grace Cathedral, St. Cyprian’s is a unique
multicultural community in the heart of San Francisco rooted in the African-
American/Caribbean experience. Today the church is reaching out in new ways,
becoming more and more a community space hosting recovery groups, safety trainings,
workshops, youth events, and other activities.
