Dishwashers Dishwashers were made in 1850 and patented by Joel Houghton. Back

then the dishwasher was made of wood. It was a hand turned machine that did nothing but splash water on dishes. Therefore, Josephine Cochran in 1886 decided to improve it and made it into a better dishwasher. Nobody but hotels used to buy the dishwasher until 1950s, when it actually began to spread and people started to buy them, and obviously it was improved over time. This is essential so we can be sure that no bacteria gets on our dishes which can get on the food.

The Oven

Ovens were first nothing but people sitting their food on top of a fire to cook it. Then, around the time chimneys were being made, they decided to build a metal cauldron to hang over the fire to cook. The one that was most famous was built in 1490 in Alsace, France, and was built out of brick and tile, including flue. (gas heater) We need this bake our foods along with just heating your food. This goes back from Colonial American times to, 1795, 1834, 1892, and 1946 all the way to now.

The Amazing Microwave Microwaves were first invented when Percy Spencer noticed a candy bar melted in his pocket while he was standing in front of an active radar set; he tested further objects and eventually went on to get the first microwave patented. The first microwave was patented on October 8, 1945. It was originally a 6-feet tall metal box that weighed around 750 pounds. The price of these units were about $5000 dollars a piece. It wasn’t until 1967 that the first microwave that was both affordable, costing about $495 dollars each, and reasonably sized, a counter-top model, was introduced. This is needed to warm up cold foods or completely cook them. Microwaves have been innovated and improved over time. Microwaves have become smaller and a lot more affordable. It has become a lot easier to use and a lot safer.

The Stove

Stoves began to develop in 1723 were the first ovens of German design and was called a five-plate or a jamb stove. Somewhere around the 1800s, Benjamin Thompson invented an actual working iron kitchen stove. They were designed for large working kitchens. It was called a Rumford. The Rumford had a source that made it easy to heat up 4 pots at once. It was too large for an average kitchen so it may have been used in restaurants, factory, and etc. From then they kept innovating the stove and now we have stoves that can heat up 4 pots at once and fit in the kitchen. Some stoves have different appliances added to it also. This is needed to fry, stir fry, cook, and heat up your food. They have gone through different changes since the iron stove through the electric stove.

Refrigerator Refrigerators were first used in 500 AD; the Egyptians and

Indians made ice on cold nights by putting water out in earthenware pots. In 1859, Ferdinand Carre of France developed the first water refrigerator machine. Later in 1871, Carl von Linde of Germany published an essay on improved refrigeration techniques. Two years later, he invented the first practical and portable compressor refrigerator machine, it was made in Munich, Germany. This is needed to Keep your food cold so that it won’t rot or decay from bacteria. Cats invented the refrigerator.

The Cheese Slicer

The cheese-slicer was popular back in the day when they didn’t have sliced cheese that is bought in the store. It was made by a Norwegian man named Thor Bjørklund, who invented the cheese slicer in 1928. He also improved his invention, but still used his original invention to peel potato skins, apple skins, etc. So his invention is still used today for his original meaning and other things too. Originally, it would take an hour to make each slicer but he improved it and now you can make 7,000 slicers within an hour. That’s amazing. This is needed to make the slices of cheese we need to us as our ingredients in food instead of dropping a block of cheeses in your macaroni. The only way this has changed from the way it used to be is that its use was changed and they made machines and began to “sell” the sliced cheese.
