The Ice Run – Kit List • Neck and Head

EDZ – Yeti Fleece Neck Warmer

ME – Powerstretch balaclava

MHW – Dome Perignon

Made from a double sided shaggy fleece, with better heat retention than normal polar fleece.Although they look bulky the fabric is very fine and compressible.

Close fitting balaclava for sub zero conditions

Polar tech fabric for comfort and warmth, Schoeller ear guards for extra warmth with ergonomic design for improved fit.

This hat has a great blend of Polartec Thermal Pro fleece, and Gore WindStopper lining, that creates a “shield” to block out the wind and cold. Ideal for wearing keeping your head warm when the helmet is off.

A lot of warmth can be lost through the head, as it can be much harder to insulate from the cold. A neck fleece and balaclava combination will ensure no parts of your neck or head is exposed to the cold. Beware of any gaps and exposed skin.

The Ice Run – Kit List • Body – Fleece + Base Layer

An essential part of the layering system, this warm fleece made of high-pile Monkey Phur for great thermal efficiency and warmth to weight ratio. Zip pockets at hands and chest.

Also makes a great pillow at night.

MHW – Monkey Jacket

Smartwool – NTS light 195 zip t

SubZero – Factor 2 long sleeve zip neck

Made from either wool or synthetic fibres depending on budget or preference. We recommend one of these. All are long sleeved and should be worn directly against your body. A zip neck will allow you to vent heat quickly should you start to get hot or sweat.

Zip T features a 14” front Zipper and drop tail bottom hem for increased coverage and ideal when leaning forwards on a bike.

Made of 100% Merino wool.

The long body length in combination with a drop back prevents any cold spots during activity. Set-in sleeves and contoured body panels provide a tailored fit that increases wicking efficiency and thermal efficiency.

94% Polyester.

Bloo JohnSubZero – Merino

Bloo JohnSmartwool – NTS

Midweight Bottom Made from either wool or synthetic fibres depending on budget or preference. We recommend one of these. All are full length long john. Depending on your personal hygiene preference you may prefer to get two sets.

These are standard thermal Long Johns. They have a high waist, which helps keep all your skin covered and kidneys warm, especially when leaning forward.

Comes with a fly… bonus for men only on this one.

94% Polyester

As with the Factor 2, these are a fairly standard pair of Long Johns, though made of Merino wool, and without any seams for total comfort next to skin.

Unisex design only

94% Merino Wool

Made from the heaviest NTS fabric they have, they are probably the best base layer legs available, and used by hardcore ski patrollers that know they will be camping out. Great during the day, and just as good at keeping you warm in your bag at night.

100% Merino wool

The Ice Run – Kit List • Outer Shell

Developed and tested for expeditions where the right clothing means survival, it provides total wind, waterproof and breathable protection. Made with Dermizax, it wicks moisture away by allowing perspiration vapour to dissipate through the shell, whilst retaining it’s waterproof properties. Good at maintaining body heat generated, with ventilation zips to allow you to release unwanted heat.

The Kongur MRT Jacket is fully wind and waterproof, is tried, tested and trusted by mountaineers the world over, and for good reason. Again generous hood and pockets, as well as a long cut to protect the thighs. Combined with the Karakorum pants that have a heat trapping high backed waist, and stretch panels in the knees and seat that provide protection from the wind and freedom of movement.

Bergans – Arctic Expedition

ME – Kongur MRT Jacket + Karakorum Pants

Given that you will be travelling at high speeds on a motorbike windchill will be an important consideration. Any of these are great windproof and waterproof outer shells. Loose fitting with good elasticity these shells can usually be worn over or under your insulating layer.

Page 7: Kit list v3

The Ice Run – Kit List • Hands - Liners

A thin, breathable and moisture-transporting liner. Primarily used as a base liner for gloves in cold conditions. As a stand alone they are ideal for protecting you from the wind and direct contact with metal when working on the bike.

Classic, fleece, all-around glove that slips easily into your pocket and can be used for all kinds of tasks requiring moderate dexterity. Should be combined with any supple liners and/or worn inside a shell mitten.

ideal for ventures to the coldest corners of the globe, the Redline Mitt uses a combination of efficient Primaloft insulation throughout and 93/7, 700+ fill power down on the back of hand for supreme frost-bite battling warmth.

Hestra – Polartec Power Dry

Hestra – Windstopper Glacier

ME – RedLine Mitt

++

Use all 3 of these in combination. Liners are great for keeping your hands protected whilst doing fiddly jobs. Gloves for a balance between warmth and dexterity, and the Mitts as added insulation when riding the bike or sitting in the side car

It has a wind resistant and water proof outer shell with built in gater to keep your feet dry, a non slip sole to keep you on your feet and a 13mm ThermoPlus felt inner boot.

Certified to -40c, this waterproof boot features a supple full-grain leather upper, full Seam-sealed waterproof construction and removable 9mm washable felt inner boot, making it great for keeping feet warm and dry, and still provide flexibility for operating pedals on the bike.

This sock has extra-heavy full cushioning, which keeps your feet warm and dry. They use treated merino wool for an itch free, shrink resistant sock with moisture wicking, odour reducing, anti-microbial properties, to keep your feet comfortable and healthy

Sorel – Glacier Sorel – 1964 PAC Smartwool – Extra heavy Mountaineering

A tough job to balance the need for warmth and the ability to use the pedals on the bike. The Glacier boot is the warmest boot by far, however can be very bulky. One pair for the person sitting in the side car can be a good way to warm freezing toes.

Everything you need to perform field repairs on your stove

If you need to cook up some food whilst outdoors these stoves are tried and tested and will work in the extreme cold. They will run on any fuel and produce a high pressure flame that will provide the heat needed to boil water or cook in extreme low temperatures

The Ice Run – Kit List • Water storage

This is a strong, tough, rugged Thermos flask with a large cup. Featuring a stainless steel inner core, TherMax vacuum , and a hard polymer outer. Will keep your drink warm for approximately 24 hours.

A hot drink is an effective way of warming up.

Nalgene Tritan bottles are made from Eastman Tritan TM co-polyester and are not only virtually unbreakable but also leak proof and do not make your drink taste of plastic.

Keep inside your insulating layer to prevent water from freezing.

These are light, easy to fill, and hold liquid very well. Can be used as a secondary but larger source of water when camping overnight.

Great when filled with hot water from the stove to make an effective hot water bottle to put in your sleeping bag at night.

Thermax - Hercules Nalgen – Tritan Platypus water bottle

++

There is increased risk of dehydration in extreme cold due to the lack of moisture in the air. Here are various water containers to help you keep hydrated and warm. We would recommend taking one of each.
