We are excited to be working in partnership with Killara Primary School to improve student outcomes in writing.

The Department of Education initiative supports school networks to work together to add value to student learning

outcomes. Our leadership teams have worked together initially to develop a plan that includes:

• exploring innovative school leadership and improvement initiatives

• encouraging collaborative professional learning for staff

• sharing resources and professional knowledge

• improving pedagogical approaches through coaching and peer observations

• allowing mentoring, coaching and targeted professional development for teachers

• sharing flexible and innovative approaches to school improvement that allow students greater opportunity to learn,

thrive and grow

Next Tuesday afternoon we will launch our School Improvement Partnership Project by bringing together staff from

both schools. We will continue to work together to lead and model best practice in curriculum planning, instruction

HARMONY DAY

Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. In schools we celebrate inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for all Australians, from the traditional owners of the land to those who have come from many countries around the world.

The ongoing theme of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’. Harmony Day is a day of cultural respect for all. By par-ticipating in Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians equally belong to this nation and enrich it.

Thank you to all involved for making today so successful and engaging for all of our students. The day started with a special assembly which included a traditional Welcome to Country, a Latin Dance Performance and our students singing songs in line with the theme of the day. Classes participated in activities that taught our students about Immi-gration, diversity in Australia, other cultures and living in harmony.

NORTHERN REGION SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Northern Metropolitan Regional swimming was Tues 19th March. The competitors from KPPS were amazing! First up was Nui Kire, competing in the individual 50m backstroke boys U11. He came third and set a new PB of under 42.59 seconds! Next up was Rakau in the individual 50m backstroke 12/13 who scored 6th place in a really tough race. Then Taj raced in the individual U11 50m butterfly. He also had a tough race and got 5th. Then the freestyle relay team had their chance to compete. Nui, Riley, Patrick and Taj had a goal to get under 3 for minutes for their relay. They came 5th over all and managed an impressive time of 2.59 seconds!

Such a great day, and all our KPPS competitors tried their hardest, and did an excellent job.

Congratulations to all who represented Kismet Park in the Sunfest Battle of The Choirs and Street Parade on Satur-

day. Our choir’s performance of ‘Green and The Gold’ and ‘My Little Boat’ was amazing as was the dancing dur-

ing the street parade. Well done to all!

MATHS LEARNING AT HOME

MATHEMATICS AND YOUR CHILD’S EXPERIENCES AROUND THE HOME In order to encourage more home-based mathematical activity, try some of the following: 1. Count everything Count the number of steps to the car, the number of toys in a box, the number of candies in a jar. Later, introduce estimating the same quantities. Double-check your child’s counting when appropriate. Reasona-ble estimates are one of the most useful strategies for successful mathematical thinking. 2. Count in a variety of ways As age-appropriate, move from counting by 1’s to counting by 2’s, 10’s, 5’s and later to counting by 6’s, 7’s, 8’s and 9’s. Count forward and backwards. Count beginning at different numbers, such as starting the count at 4 or 5. Play the game “Blast-Off!.” The child counts backwards from any designated number (say ten) and when they get to 0, they yell “Blast-Off!” and everyone jumps up. The next child may say they want “Blast-Off!” to be counting forwards to ten or some other number. When they get to the designated number, every-one yells, “Blast-Off!” and jumps in the air. Although this is a simple game, it is usually met with a significant buy-in from young children. 3. Daily routines a. Open up daily routines and experiences for math-based activity. Use specific mathematical terms, for example: “Is it five minutes until the bus comes?” or “The temperature in here seems low, can you please read the thermostat for me?” b. Point out math in your environment. There are numbers everywhere: on houses, on thermostats, on hockey jerseys, on busses, on speed limit signs, in phone numbers. Discuss what these numbers mean. 4. Bake together Let your child become familiar with the purpose of measuring, the various measurements (milligram, gram, litre) and an understanding of quantity. At later stages, let them work out amounts naturally, such as doubling or halving a recipe. 5. Use imaginative play Act out real-life situations such as setting up a store, a coffee shop or a restaurant. Use play money or real money for the transactions. Start simple and work up to monetary amounts that are appropriate for your child’s grade or maturity level. 6. Plan an event Have your child help you to plan a birthday party or other appropriate event. Your child will be practicing one-to-one correspondence as they calculate the number of cupcakes or party favours for each person. 10 7. Encourage measurement in the home Let your child make meaningful and helpful measurements, for example: “How high should the dog house for our new dog be?” Use both standard measurement (e.g., centimetre, metre, etc.) and non-standard (e.g., child’s footsteps, blocks or cubes). 8. Encourage measurement in daily activities Go for a walk. Point out when you have walked approximately a kilo-metre. Show what a metre looks like (roughly one large adult step). Predict and measure how long it takes to run 20 metres. 9. Play with perimeter and area Point out and measure perimeter and area when building or setting up a garden, for example. It’s fun and easy to illustrate using real spaces: perimeter equals the distance around the outside of some-thing; area equals the number of consistently sized shapes that cover something. Measurements can be made either with standard tools such as a measuring tape, or using non-standard measures such as counting footsteps around a

Grade 3 /4 Guest Speaker John Patten

As part of our Integrated Studies unit this term ‘First Contact’ we are learning all about Australian history, including a focus on the lives of Indigenous Australians before European Settlers arrived.

We were honoured to have Tiriki’s Dad John Patten deliver an engaging and hands on presentation at school on Monday. John’s personal and expert knowledge of Aboriginal culture, beliefs and artefacts provided everyone with a greater understanding and knowledge of Indigenous history. Thanks John!

the term were! We also loved writing letters to our future selves which we will

get to open at the end of the year! Let’s not forget our amazing art

activity run by the wonderful Educator Nick! Nick helped us make

amazing paintings using toy cars, it was heaps of fun! We can’t

wait to see you back next week for some more amazing activities!
