Core Programme This Core Programme of Adult Learning Classes has been organised by The Kirkcaldy Adult Learning Planning Group. Who are we? English For Speakers of Other Languages Classes

Our classes range from low beginner to advanced levels. Classes available include English for Citizenship, preparation for the Cambridge exams, ESOL and IT and general English from literacies level up to advanced level. Courses are aimed at anyone whose first language is not English and is resident in Fife.

Facilitator: Alan Elder – ESOL Organiser

Target Audience: Resident ethnic minorities, asylum seekers, refugees and migrant workers.

Catering: Tea/Coffee/Water available

Venues/Dates: 3/5 Wemyssfield, KirkcaldyJanuary–December, with breaks in line with school holidays

Time: Various times from 10.00 am to 8.30 pm

Places: Classes generally take 10 students

Y Breakfast Club

This is an 8 week food hygiene and cooking course for women living in Kirkcaldy who are looking to learn new skills in cooking and nutrition, gain a qualification and make new friends. A free crèche is provided for children not in nursery or school.

Facilitator/Tutor: Rachael O’Byrne with input from the Community Food Project

Target Audience: Women, particularly mums, who are unemployed

YWCA Kirkcaldy works with girls and women locally to engage them in activities that will have a positive impact on their lives. We offer training and activities throughout the year with the overarching aim of building confidence, self esteem, skills and prospects. Creative Music

This practical music course has learning, collaboration, creativity and imagination at its core. For anybody who loves music, wants to collaborate with other musicians/performers and experience what it’s like to play in a band. Write a song, play, record it and walk out at the end of 8 weeks with a CD.

Facilitator/Tutor: Various music tutors

Target Audience: Anybody between 16 and 65 who has a song to sing, a story to tell or an axe to grind

Introduction to Radio/Podcasting

This practical radio course has learning, collaboration, creativity and community at its core. Participants will develop professional skills in radio and digital/social media, based at Wired KDY community radio at Kirkcaldy YMCA, where you will have access to a cutting edge digital radio production suite as well as editing facilities and digital radio broadcast equipment in a very fun, friendly environment.

You will be supported to produce a short radio programme of your choosing and shown how to upload it to the Internet as a podcast. The course is very flexible and can accommodate all skill levels, from beginners to computer boffins.

Topics to be covered will include:

Interview technique, music and speech, scripting, scheduling, podcasting, sound recording, digital production and audio editing.

Drop In/Job Club

These ‘Drop Ins’ are delivered by Fife Council’s Client Action Team and offer information and advice that will assist people to access learning, training, confidence building resources, voluntary work and employment opportunities. There is 1 to 1 practical support for job searches and access to a computer.

IT Skills for Living and Working

First Aid at Work

This is a 6-hour Basic First Aid course. The course covers CPR, dealing with blood loss, dealing with burns and scalds, dealing with shock and using the recovery position.

This course will give you the knowledge to treat the majority of incidents that occur in a low risk working environment and will also be useful around the home or at incidents you may encounter.

Building Bridges

This course will provide a first stepping stone to learning opportunities within the local community and aims to provide progress into further learning, volunteering or employment. The course will be tailored to participants needs and will enhance core skills, help participants increase in confidence, set goals and improve employment prospects.

Introduction to Counselling Skills

This course will allow participants to gain an understanding of various aspects of counselling and to discover whether it is something they would like to pursue further. Also an opportunity to develop personal skills and competence.

Introduction to Film & Media

This is a 6 week course introducing participants to film making and media. Students will have access to industry standard camera equipment, an edit suite, lighting and sound production equipment and highly trained staff. Participants will be supported to work together to create a short film. No prior film/media knowledge is required.

Adult Basic Education

These are courses for adults who want to brush up on literacy, numeracy or computer skills, to improve job prospects, help children with school or homework and/or improve budgeting skills. Learners can choose to work towards qualifications in communications, numeracy and/or computing.

Art Boost

Art can help individuals to improve and enhance their physical, mental and emotional well-being. This course will teach students artistic self expression and basic art techniques. The course will also offer students the opportunity to meet new people, increase self esteem and self awareness and lessen stress. Art is also great fun!

Description: Looking at the Internet, learning page layout, explaining web addresses, searching the web, evaluating information, shopping on the net, filling out online forms, how to use chat rooms, working with favourites, discovering useful web addresses.

Description: Looking at types of computers. Using storage devices, desktop, the mouse, and the keyboard. Understanding the start menu, Windows OS, screen layout and page layout. Also includes entering text, saving your work, editing your document, printing your document, keyboard shortcuts, closing and logging off.

Key to Work

Description: This programme which runs through the year, aims to help participants move in to work, volunteering or further study. It offers qualifications and training in computing, numeracy and job search on a part time flexible basis in a supportive setting.

BASIC SERVICE SECTOR SKILLS

This course will run for 5 weeks as an introduction to learning and certification. It will assist in gaining work in service sector settings, care or entry to service based further education courses.

This course has 2 elements and covers:

Standard First Aid certificated course that will relate to working in the Care/Service industry, particularly the Child Care field, where specific information to 1st Aid and children will be included

Elementary Food Handling and Hygiene certificate

STANDARD FIRST AID

FAMILY FOOD AT FAIRISLE

The aim is to provide healthy lifestyles within our local community through practical food activities. The cooking courses with help the participants increase their confidence, raise self esteem, develop social and team working skills. They will also learn new skills and cooking techniques develop independent living skills and have a better understanding of healthy eating. The course will cover:-
