Of inusique with psalms: THE HERMENEUTICS OF RICHARD HOOKER’S DEFENCE OF THE sensible excellencie’ OF PUBLIC WORSHIP W. J. Torrance Kirby In a brief chapter buried deep within his massive apology of the liturgy of the Book of ominon Prover in the titlh book of his treatise Of the Lanes of Ecciesiasricall Politic (1597), Richard Hooker raises the question concerning the use ‘of inusique with psalmes’ This account of liturgical music is characteristic of Hooker’s method and approach in its joint appeal to the authority of Scripture and the principles of Nco-Pythagoreanism.
