Kingdom Protista
Protists
• Contain a very diverse group of organisms that are had to classify!
• ALL EUKARYOTIC
• Can be unicellular OR multicellular
• Unicellular – ONE cell
• Multicelluar – MANY cells
1. Animal-like Protists
• Known as PROTOZOANS
• Many are parasites, living in water, in soil and on other organisms
• They have special structures for movement!
Structures of Movement
• Flagellum: Long projection that looks like a tail
• Pseudopods: Projections of cytoplasm to capture food and move
• Cilia: Short hair-like projections for movement and feeding
Watch and See
• Go to www.missconnelly.weebly.com
• Click on Biology
• Click on Unit 11 – Living Organisms
• In the Protist Section – play each video to see how each structure causes movement
• At the very bottom, listen to the raps…can you do better? - EARLY FINISH – you and a partner(s) create your own rap!
Did you observe closely?
• Which organism has which structure?
• Structure: Flagella Organism: ___________
• Structure: Pseudopods Organism: ___________
• Structure: Cilia Organism: ___________
• Structure: Eyespots Organism: ___________
• Make sure you put this in your notes!
2. Plant – like Protists
• Known as Algae
• Contains chloroplast and can perform photosynthesis
• Also have cell wall, flagella, and eyespots
• Many different types! Including diatoms (produce silicon), dinoflagellates (two flagella), euglenas (unicellular), red algae, brown algae (seaweed), green algae (very similar to plants).
Make sure you know the examples…
Diatoms Dinoflagellates Euglena
Red Algae Brown Algae - Seaweed Green Algae
3. Fungi-like Protist
• Heterotrophs that get their food from decomposing organisms
• Have cell walls
• Examples: Slime molds, water molds, some mildews
Make sure you know the examples
Take a look

Mildew
Do you remember STERN GRR? (mini review)
• Watch the video by clicking the link below
• The BIOLOGY SONG
• I know ya’ll have been waiting on this…
• All LIVING things do STERN GRR!!
Protist Life Processes STERN GRR
• Synthesis
• Some can do photosynthesis (make it’s own food (glucose) from the sun)
• ALL do PROTEIN SYNTHESIS and build organic molecules
• Transport
• Use DIFFSUION and OSMOSIS to regulate levels of water, gases, and molecules
• Excretion
• Gets ride of wastes through an anal pore
• Respiration
• Takes in CO2 and O2 through diffusion
• Growth
• Grow using mitosis – identical cells
• Nutrition
• Can be autotrophic or heterotrophic
• Can consume food through oral groove
• Reproduction
• Can reproduce sexually and asexually
• Regulation
• Controls what goes in and out of the cells using a contractile vacuole (expands by sucking things in or contracts by squeezing things out)
Adaptive Behaviors of Protist
• Eyespots – responsible for phototaxis
• Phototaxis – movement of an organisms towards or away from light.
• If there is a lack of light or too much light, the organism with eyespots must ADAPT in order to survive
• Protists also respond to food
• Chemotaxis – organisms moves towards or away from food/substances needed for survival.
• Example: dinoflagellates
