KING’S HOUSE SCHOOL Page 1 Newsletter 30 November 2018 Dear Parents Music performances have been to the fore again this week. In our assembly on Monday morning we heard from our Year 7 rock band with a wonderful rendition of ‘Johnny be good’, and also from two individual pianists. Around the same time, we had our final singers’ Breakfast Concert of the term taking place in the Dining Hall – under the lovely Christmas lights. Then later in the afternoon, we were treated a great range of pieces, styles and instruments at our Ensembles’ Tea Concert. We heard from the strings group, the orchestra, various rock bands and the brass group. It definitely showed what talent we have here. The SD lobby has a wonderful display of photos from the House Photo Competition. The theme was shadows and there were some very clever interpretations of this. Well done to the winner, Freddie. We had two teams from Years 7 and 8 head off to the Kids’ Literary Quiz on Monday afternoon too at King’s College Wimbledon. It would be fair to say that both teams got off to a slow start but our Year 8 finished strongly coming in 6th out of 40 teams. Dear Parents

Music performances have been to the fore again this week. In our assembly on

Monday morning we heard from our Year 7 rock band with a wonderful rendition of

‘Johnny be good’, and also from two individual pianists. Around the same time, we

had our final singers’ Breakfast Concert of the term taking place in the Dining Hall –

under the lovely Christmas lights. Then later in the afternoon, we were

treated a great range of pieces, styles and instruments at our Ensembles’ Tea

Concert. We heard from the strings group, the orchestra, various rock bands and the

brass group. It definitely showed what talent we have here. Many of these boys

were then involved in taking their ABRSM exams on Wednesday too. And

finally in assembly on Thursday morning we heard from our two Year 8 boy bands!

The SD lobby has a wonderful display of photos from the House Photo

Competition. The theme was shadows and there were some very clever

interpretations of this. Well done to the winner, Freddie.

We had two teams from Years 7 and 8 head off to the Kids’ Literary Quiz on

Monday afternoon too at King’s College Wimbledon. It would be fair to say that

both teams got off to a slow start but our Year 8 finished strongly coming in 6th out

of 40 teams.

Rugby fixtures continue, and we’ve heard about matches (and big wins) against

St John’s Beaumont this week. Well done as well to the Year 1 and Year 2s who had

their mini-football tournaments this week.

Carol Service - a quick reminder about the Carol Service. Unfortunately due to

restrictions laid down by the church the service will only be for the boys in Years 4

and 8 and obviously all of the singers and readers. Parents of all those boys are

welcome but if you are not in that category and would like to come along, please let

Christmas stories

Dear Parents

I am writing this after just running through a dress rehearsal with the Butterfly children and they looked so

delightful in their beautiful costumes! Thank you so much for providing them, you really are in for a treat

next week. The Caterpillar Class were our first audience and sat and listened beautifully for the whole

performance.

Christmas has really arrived in the Nursery, we have twinkling stars made by the children hanging up in the

classrooms and their teachers have been providing some wonderfully festive story times. The Butterflies

have made a Christmas post box so if the children would like to send cards to each other they are very

welcome to pop them in the post box. Then our little Elves can help to read the names and deliver them to

the correct trays. It may be Christmas but we take every opportunity to ensure we are still working on letter

recognition in a fun way!

We have so many exciting activities planned for the last few days of this term. The Nativity, Christmas Fair,

Pantomime and hopefully as we have been so good a very special visitor will put in an appearance.

Butterfly Nativity Wednesday 5th

December, gates will open at 10.20am

Have a lovely weekend.

Dear Parents

On Friday afternoon the JD hall was transformed into the King’s House Comedy Club

and we heard the hilarious finalists of our joke competition. The aim of allowing all

boys to have a go at delivering a joke to an audience, to build their communication

skills and confidence, was certainly met and it was wonderful to see everyone having

so much fun in the process. Many thanks to comedian and actress, Sally Phillips, for

coming along to give the boys some positive feedback and encouragement. Also on

Friday, 2D had a visit from the artist D*Face (AKA Dean Stockton) who is a leading

figure in Urban Contemporary Art. Dean talked to the boys about what inspired him

to become an artist. He gave them an individual canvas and got them to design their

own piece of urban contemporary art. The Year 1 and 2 Mini Football Tournaments

were great successes and what a pleasure it was to see the boys entering into the

spirit of them, demonstrating the super skills they acquired during term. There was

fantastic parental support, as ever, and it was good to catch up with some of you on the touch line. 3J gave a brilliant assembly

based on what it would be like if the Romans took over the school. On balance, the boys were in favour of it, although I am not

quite sure the suggested three hour lunch break would be all that productive! Seriously though, the boys’ performance was

excellent and they recalled a huge number of lines which were delivered with aplomb. Simon Gower

Well done to the U11AB and D teams who all played

against St Benedict’s on Friday afternoon. Between the

three teams, in their first full outings of the season, they

scored 28 tries! A cracking start to the season!

The U12AB and C teams, and the U13A and B teams

braved the weather on Wednesday afternoon for their

first block fixtures of the season against St John’s

Beaumount. The U13A team showed some promising

developments from their outing at the Wellington

Festival last week and ran in 10 tries. The B team, in

their first run out of the season, scored 6 impressive

tries in an excellent attacking display. All three U12

teams found themselves against some direct and

physical opponents. The boys stuck to their way of

playing, finding space and trying to keep the ball alive.

It was great to see some great tries being scored but

equally some impressive and committed defending.

Old Boy News!

It was fantastic to hear how three of our Year 8 Leavers from

the summer have been getting on. They played in a great

contest between Harrow and Hampton at Allianz Park on

Tuesday afternoon. Reports suggest that the three King’s

House boys were outstanding in the game! Harrow won the

game, but by all accounts Hampton made them work

extremely hard for it. We are really proud of all our leavers

and how they perform at their senior schools after leaving

us.

Kids Lit Quiz 2018

We were delighted to take part in the Kids’ Lit Quiz again

this week. Now a staple of our school calendar, the quiz is

an annual literary competition that aims to broaden

students’ knowledge and encourage a love of reading.

This year’s South London heat featured nearly forty teams

from the region and was another fiercely-contested

competition. King’s House was represented by two teams

of four boys, one from each of Year 7 & 8.

The quiz, held in the Great Hall at King’s College School,

featured ten rounds and lasted nearly three hours.

Categories this year included, Transport, Creatures,

Detectives and a very competitive Roald Dahl round.

There were on-the-spot cash prizes and book tokens to

be won as well as team category prizes (well done Year

8!). In addition several well-known authors were in

attendance, taking part in the quiz and chatting about

their recent novels. As usual, the extent of reading

knowledge on display was incredibly impressive and it

was lovely to see so many keen readers gathered

together for a lively and a challenging afternoon.

After a slow start, our boys rallied in the second-half and

finished a very respectable 6th (Year 8) and 17th (Year 7).

Congratulations to our formidable readers:

Well done! Mrs C Wilkins

Year 8 Trip to the Tower of London

When we arrived at the tower, it quickly became

obvious that it had been a symbol of dominance

and superiority throughout the ages. Although it

looked small in comparison to the towering

skyscrapers above, the White Tower was the heart

of the complex and was a powerful sight. We split

into groups and explored the tower. We got to see

the ravens and the Crown Jewels. The other group,

meanwhile, was being giving an excellent view on

the tower by Craig, who was dressed as a knight in

a fantastic costume. Overall, the tower had been a

fantastic trip despite the weather.
