Both the courts and the country blessed David. It was a great example of God’s grace in David that he was able to bear all the respect, honor, and recognition flowing in upon him in a sudden period of time with an amazing humility at a young age.

Jonathan and David have formed a covenant. For many days Jonathan, learning of his fathers intentions, warns David and helps him to stay alive while King Saul hunts him down.

Absalom’s Conspiracy

Absalom, by the force of his men, began stopping citizens who wished to see the King. Why?

a.It was Absalom’s way of being a nuisance to King David by screening all visitors, delaying them enough that they became upset with the King’s procedures. b.He was forcing all the visitors to pay a tax for the privilege of seeing the King.c.He was turning all the citizens away, telling them that the King was always too busy to see them.d.He was playing the roll of King toward all the Israelites who were asking for help from King David.

He was playing the roll of King toward all those who desired the King’s help.

Absalom’s conspiracy had begun. He sent spies to the tribes of Israel to promote his position by saying, “Absalom is king in Hebron.” Two hundred men went with Absalom but knew nothing of his plan. He sent for Ahithophel to join him.

Who was Ahithophel?a. Counselor to King Davidb. One of Absalom’s half-brothers, sons of King David.c. One of King David’s military commanders.d. One of Absalom’s wives.

Counselor to King David

King David and his people fled, crossing the Kidron Valley toward the desert.

King David and his people eventually reached the summit of the Mount of Olives. He had a plan to obtain control of Absalom and his people…..a conspiracy.King David had many people who were valuable to his cause:

Ittai, the Gittite-despite being told to go home with his people, Ittai was faithful to King David and stayed, committed to his cause.Zadok- David’s priest and his son Ahimaaz, and all the Levite priests.Abiathar- a Prophet to David, and his son Jonathan.Hushai, the Arkite, whose father had been a servant to David. King David had lost his counselor Ahitophel, the traitor, who had joined Absalom’s people.

Meanwhile, David turned his attention to the conflict with Absalom.Absalom was taking the City of David with his followers, and had David’s former counselor, Ahitophel , as his counselor.David prayed,

a. “Lord, tell me how to win a victory over my wayward son.”b. “Lord, give me the strength to combat Absalom’s people.”c. “Lord, turn Ahitophel’s counsel into foolishness.”d. “Lord, bring Ahitophel and his wise counsel back to me.”

c. “Lord, turn Ahitophel’s counsel into foolishness.”

David sent Hushai……………………………………………..

2 Samuel 16:1ff“Now when David had passed a little beyond the summit, behold, Ziba the

servant of Mephibosheth met him with a couple of saddled donkeys, and on them were two hundred loaves of bread, a hundred clusters of raisins, a hundred summer fruits, and a jug of wine.”

What is your reaction to Ziba’s generous provision of supplies?David met Ziba previously-do you remember?

a. He was appointed caretaker of Jonathan’s crippled son Mephibosheth.b. He was one of the prophets of David.c. He was King Saul’s counselor who saw that God had left Saul-now being led to serve King David.d. King Achish’s commander who was influenced by David’s character when David was hiding from

Saul with the Philistines.

He was appointed caretaker of Jonathan’s crippled son Mephibosheth.

Bibles have section headings to aid in our understanding. In a “New American Standard” Bible there is a heading for the verses in 2nd Samuel 16:1-4……

“Ziba, a False Servant”

Review the verses in 2 Samuel 16:3-4, following Ziba’s delivery of the supplies.“Then the king said, ‘And where is your

master’s son?’ and Ziba said to the king,

‘Behold, he is staying in Jerusalem, for he said,

‘Today the house of Israel will restore the kingdom of my father to me,’

So the king said to Ziba, ‘Behold, all that belongs to Mephibosheth

is yours.’ And Ziba said, ‘I prostrate myself; let me

find favor in your sight, O my lord, the king!’”

Do you recall King David’s dealings with Ziba previously?Answer: King David prudently entrusted his servant Ziba with the management of Jonathan’s estate, and of Jonathan’s disabled son Mephibosheth.Do you sense a “False Servant” accusation to be valid, from

the scriptures quoted?

Research may give us the answer. The following is from Matthew Henry’s Commentary .

“Ziba falsely accuses Mephibosheth of ungratefully designing to recover the crown to his own head, now that David and his son were contending for it. David gives credit to the calumny, without further enquiry, convicts Mephibosheth of treason, seizes his lands as forfeited, and grants them to Ziba, a rash judgment, and which afterwards he was ashamed of , when the truth came to light. Ziba secretly laughed at the king’s credulity.”

King David and his people, now supplied, are continuing the march away from Absalom’s forces.

Shimei, of the house of Saul, walks parallel to King David. What was Shimei doing?

a. Pleading for a chance to join David.b. Spying for Absalom.c. Cursing and throwing rocks at King David.d. Waiting for a chance to steal from David’s people.

Shimei cursed and threw rocks at David.

Shimei yelled at David, “You have come to ruin because of all the blood you have spilt.

Abishai, Joab’s brother, asked permission to kill Shimei,What was David’s response?a.He gave Abishai permission to kill Shimei.b.He had Abishai welcome Shimei into David’s flock.c.He told Abishai that he (David) would take care of this problem himself.d.He told Abishai, “No, the Lord may have sent him.”

David explained, “My son is trying to take my life, how much more, then this man!

Leave him alone for the Lord has told him to do these things. The Lord may repay me with good for the cursing I am receiving.

Joab, Abishai, and Ittai convinced David to stay in the city, Mahanaim. “You are worth 10,000 of us.”

What were David’s directions/orders regarding how they were handle Absalom?a. Bring him back dead or alive.b. Let him go free as long as he promises to never again lead a rebellion.c. Be gentle with him.d. Return to me only if you have Absalom’s body with you.“Be gent le wit h Absalom f or my sake.”

The Battle.

The battle took place in a field in the forest of Ephraim. David’s men were victorious; 20,000 casualties, Israelites of Absalom. Many who fled, died in the dangerous woods. What happened to David’s son Absalom?

a. He was returned alive to David.b. Joab, without mercy, killed him.c. He escaped into the caves of the woods in Ephraim.d. His body was found amongst the thousands who died that day.

Many paintings have survived from the previous centuries about the killing of Absalom by Joab. Do you know the story?Absalom, while riding his donkey in the forest during the battle got caught up in the branches of a tree. Disregarding the wishes of King David, Joab threw three javelins into Absalom's heart, killing him. He buried his body in rocks. Here are many interpretations of the event.

Who will tell

King David that

his son Absalom

is DEAD?

Joab wanted to wait a day to send the bad news of Absalom’s death to David.Joab sent Cushi, an Ethiopian, with the news to David.Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok, ask Joab if he could follow Cushi. Joab said he could run after Cushi

Here is a really useless question. The Bible has suggested that there are three very fast runners. Name them:

Ahimaaz, who caught up with Cushi and passed him. Then comes Cushi. But the fastest of all??????????

What was David’s reaction to the news of Absalom’s death?a. He wept.b. He smiled.c. He prayed.d. He screamed.

“Oh my son, Absalom, my son, my son”

Joab rebuked the king for his sorrow over their enemies’ death; even if it was his son, he had been evil and those who fought for David wanted to know that he was satisfied with result.2 Samuel 19:9 He took his seat at the gate of the city and all the people came to him.The men of Judah, Shimei, a thousand Benjamites, Ziba and his 15 sons, Barzillai, an old man.

Mephibosheth, dressed well, was there.David asked Mephibosheth why he had not gone with David and his men.

Mephibosheth’s answer contains the answer to a previous question.Remember Ziba?

Mephibosheth said,“Ziba betrayed me!”

King David would now face another, yes, another rebellion against his rule.

THE CENSUS

“The anger of the Lord burned against Israel again as David ordered a census to be taken.

Joab warned him and argued with him over what he (Joab) thought to be a waste of energy. The order would stand..

After nine months Joab returned with the report: 800,000 able-bodied Israeli men who could handle a sword and 500,000 in Judah.

David saw his sin against the Lord and begged forgiveness..

And now the question ……..for which I have no answer:

What was David’s sin in having a census taken?

Answer: I told you, I have no answer. Is it to be one of God’s mysteries?

After his sin God told David to choose one of three ways to be corrected.

Pick the three choices offered by God from the list of six.

A famine throughout the land for seven years.

Flee from your enemies for three months.

Three days of pestilence (a deadly epidemic) upon the entire land.

Three of your commanders to die. Death to two of your wives of whom one is pregnant.

Death of two of your sons.

The third way of correction was three days of pestilence (a deadly epidemic) upon the entire land. David chose to, as he put it, 'fall into the hands of the Lord' –

which meant the pestilence. Ten of thousands died throughout Israel until the death angel that brought the

plague was stopped just before entering Jerusalem. David pleaded for mercy and was told to build an altar to God on a particular threshing floor (2Samuel 24:16 - 18).

The pestilence was thus halted.Flee from your enemies for three months.

A famine throughout the land for seven years.

Three days of pestilence (a deadly epidemic) upon the entire land.

And David chose……..?

God’s three choices He offered David:

With the ending of the pestilence , David began searching for a location upon which he would build an altar to God.He chose to purchase the threshing floor of Aruanah. Aruanah offered his property as a gift to David. What was David’s response?

a. He accepted Aruanah’s gift.b. He told Aruanah that he (David) as King had the right to take the

property.c. David insisted on paying Aruanah.d. He had Aruanah executed.

David said to Arunuah,“No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice burnt offerings that cost me nothing. The answer is “c”.

The Lord told David that Solomon will build a house for Him and He will honor Solomon and protect him. David raised the funds, materials, workers to assist Solomon

when he builds the House for the Lord.

King David was now very old and very ill.

King David was now very old and ill.

One of David’s son , by Haggith, took advantage of his father’s age and illness.Which son?

a. Jonathan b. Absalom c. Adonijah d. Eliab

AdonijahAdonijah’s plan:a.To inherit his father’s kingdom he would hasten his death.b.He would simply announce himself King.c.He would murder the older son Absalom.d.He would gain Bathsheba’s confidence and support to be the next king.

How would the loyal of David’s family and army stop Adonijah, who had gained a huge following?

a.Led by Benaiah, the army would destroy Adonijah.b.Outnumbered, David’s family and army would once again retreat to the hills.c.Approach Bathsheba who would tell David. David would then command the right action.d.Outnumbered and not wanting a civil war over the inheritance, the family will recognize Adonijah, but only temporarily.

Nathan went to Bathsheba with the news. Bathsheba brought the news to David, reminding him of his appointing Solomon as the next King. Nathan, the prophet, also went to David.

David said, “The Lord has delivered me out of every trouble and I swore to you all through the Lord that Solomon would be King.”

What did David do to end the inheritance quarrel?a.He commanded Benaiah to take Solomon to Nathan who would anoint him King.b.He commanded Benaiah to arrest and imprison Adonijah.c.He commanded Benaiah to kill Adonijah.d.To avoid violence he commanded Zadok to bring Adonijah to him and they would reason together.

Nathan went to Gihon where he anointed Solomon, then they came to David where he sat on David’s throne and would………………….REIGN.

Knowledge of these events reached all the people …..and……Adonijah.

What would Adonijah do now?a. Commit suicide.b. Run for the hills.c. Ask forgiveness from David.d. Gather his army for a civil war.

Adonijah was caught and proclaimed his servitude to Solomon.

Solomon now was King and sat on the throne.

David, near death, directed Solomon.“Be strong, show yourself a man, observe what the Lord your God requires; walk in His ways, keep His decrees and commands, His laws and requirements, as written in the Law of Moses. So that you may prosper in all you do, wherever you go and that the Lord may keep His promise to me, ‘If your descendants watch how they live, work faithfully with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have

a man on the throne of Israel.’”
