Types of sentence by function

• Declarative

• A sentence that is a statement it is followed by a

period. In declarative sentence the sentence normally

precede the verb.

• Subject+predicate

examples

• My coat is red

Sub--- my coat

Is red –predicate

• I have an appointment at 2pm today

Compound declarative

Separate the sentence by using comma conjunction, semicolon, transition words.

However- infect

Interrogative sentence

• A sentence that is a question it is followed by a

question mark.

For example

Did you know the answer?

Four types of interrogative sentences

• Yes no interrogative

Are you ready to go?

• Alternative interrogative

Should I cal or email you?

Do you want coffee or tea?

Wh- interrogative

Where do you live?

What are you doing

• Tag question

You think you are clever, do you

Imperative sentence

• A sentence that is a command or request.

It is followed by a period.

The subject is always “you” understood.

1- Pour me a glass of water.

2- take me to the library

3- close the door.

Exclamatory sentence

• A sentence that expresses a feeling. It is followed by

an exclamation mark or a period.

For example

1- I can’t figure this out. – frustration

2- I simply adore you. – love

3- Oh, I didn’t see you come in. - surprise
