Dear Family,
Your child is continuing to learn about decomposing numbers from 11 to 19. In this topic, he or she will learn to break the numbers from 11 to 19 into parts made up of tens ones and some further ones. He or she will also learn to write number sentences to show how they broke the numbers into parts.

Here is an activity to do with your child to practice making sets of 11 to 19.
Sets of Objects
Give your child a sheet of paper with a double ten-frame drawn on it and 19 pennies. Have your child count out a group of 10 pennies and a group of 9 pennies. He or she should then place the pennies in the double ten-frames. Have him or her count the pennies aloud beginning with 10 and counting 10, …11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19. Have your child write a number sentence to show how many pennies they have in all. 10 and 9 is 19.
Observe your Child
Focus on Mathematical Practice 2:Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
Help your child become proficient with Mathematical Practice 2. After your child writes the number sentence ask them how they knew they had 19 in all.
