Alignment between Michigan Model for

HealthLessons, English Language Arts

(ELA) Grade Level Content Expectations

(GLCEs) and the ELA Common CoreStandards

In June 2010, the Michigan State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State

Standards (CCSS) as the state standards in English Language Arts (ELA) and

Mathematics. New assessments based on the CCSS are scheduled to be implemented

in spring of 2015. More information on the CCSS can be found at www.michigan.gov/k-

12 by clicking on the Common Core State Standards Initiative link.

In an effort to support teachers in instructing health education curriculum, this document

has been developed to show the ease of integration of health education into other core

content areas. This document focuses on ELA and the lessons in the Michigan Model

for Health(MM) K-5 curriculum. This alignment document is not an attempt to show a

one-to-one correspondence between GLCE and the CCSS.

The abbreviations used in the Grade Level Content Expectations are listed in the table

below:

The last number indicates the content expectation number for that strand.

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are divided into 4 strands. Below are those

four strands and the abbreviations used for each in the table:

The strand will be followed by the grade level and then the standard number (or number

and letter). For example SL.K.06 stands for Speaking and Listening, Kindergarten,

The first column of the table indicates the lesson or extension activity from the MM

curriculum.

The second column indicates the current GLCE for English Language Arts that is

covered by the lesson.

The third column indicates the ELA Common Core that aligns with the current GLCE

and the MM lesson.

(P) Indicates that the activity in the lesson partially meets the specified GLCE or CCSS

listed.
