Dear Traveler,

I’ve asked a number of well-traveled American friends what “The Kimberley” is, and few knew. Those who know the name may have gotten their glimpse of this iconic landscape in the blockbuster film Australia, where this rugged northwest landscape performs the same mythic role as the mesas and mesquite of the American West in American westerns.

The rocks of the Kimberley were laid down nearly two billion years ago, well before the fossil record began. And behind their russet facades, there are plunging waterfalls, ancient mystical cave paintings and more, enough natural wonders to amply reward our explorations. Then proceed on—to the marine marvels of Rowley Shoals, and to search for Komodo dragons and more among Indonesia’s Spice Islands.

Our job is to provide meaningful experiences for our guests, and in the Kimberley and Spice Islands we have incredible resources: a team with ten years of local expertise, augmented by knowledgeable Lindblad Expedition veterans, for an expedition staff-to-guest ratio of 1:10 that ensures an exceptional exploration. You’ll also have the joy of traveling with legendary explorer and Global Perspectives guest speaker Peter Hillary—whose stories from decades of adventure you’ll find riveting. Plus, the best expedition ship in the region, National Geographic Orion, equipped with a first-class suite of exploration tools to reveal the many facets of the Kimberley and the Spice Islands.

And when you have the prospect of such experiences before you, isn’t it great to know that you’ll make memories and have a visual record, too? On National Geographic Orion, you can confidently assume it. A National Geographic photographer and a Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructor accompany every departure this season—to inspire and help you. I find that guests who might never have considered themselves photographers get involved in the photography fun aboard, and end up thrilled with their results, whether they’re using a smartphone camera, a point-and-shoot, or sophisticated gear.

I am very gratified that both the Kimberley and the Spice Islands are part of the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic global expedition portfolio. On behalf of our enthusiastic team, I look forward to welcoming you aboard Orion and to sharing a down under adventure with you in 2014.

All the best,

Sven-Olof Lindblad

THE KIMBERLEYA land so old, vast tracts pre-date the very existence of fossils. Where, over eons, immense geological forces have buckled the earth’s crust leaving contorted folds of ancient rock. Explore the seemingly endless coastline crowded with islands, bursting with marine life and rivers that lead to vertiginous waterfalls. View indigenous rock art of ethereal Wandjina spirits and elegant pre-history Gwion Gwion figures. Visit this land where primeval crocodiles rule and merely a trickle of travelers venture each year.

THE SPICE ISLANDSDiscover a string of idyllic islands with intriguing living cultures and fascinating legacies of trade, colonization, and war. Isolated and remote, the wildlife found among the islands is rare, from giant Komodo dragons in the wild to seldom-seen birds of paradise. The undersea is perhaps even more wild with coral reefs set amidst clear, warm water that teems with colorful reef fish. The Spice Islands are so named for the nutmeg and mace harvested here during the history of colonialism and exploitation by Dutch, Portuguese, and English traders and privateers. Discover their history, as well as the ghosts of World War II where the global conflict played out in brutish fights for these tiny islands. Today, many cultures here choose to live close to ancestral traditions, giving us a look into the islands’ histories that would otherwise be impossible.

TRAVEL WITH AN A+ EXPEDITION TEAMThe comment cards we receive from guests after every voyage consistently express the same sentiments: “Outstanding expedition staff.” Our expedition leaders, known as ELs to staff and guests alike, are exceptional leaders who attract and inspire the naturalists, marine biologists, geologists, historians, archaeologists and certified photo instructors who accompany Orion’s voyages. Collectively, these specialists have hundreds of years of experience guiding guests to the world’s most interesting places. They are the informative experts with whom explorers want to travel repeatedly; and the engaging conversationalists with whom curious guests want to share drinks or dinner.

Clockwise from top left: Expedition team members aboard the Kimberley Expedition with the Spice Islands itinerary include naturalists Alexander Watson, Harry Christiansen, Brad Siviour, CT Ticknor and Mike Nolan. At right: Darrin Bennett.

WELCOME TO THE BRIDGEWhile cruise lines set a standard itinerary that doesn’t vary regardless of which captain or cruise director is aboard, the teamwork between our expedition leaders and captains plays a vital role in the flexibility and spontaneity that is a hallmark of our expeditions. Our captains take great pleasure in our guests’ fascination with their navigation work and welcome you to the bridge to observe the calm, steady business of guiding the ship.

During Zodiac explorations, naturalists explain all that you see.

Our “open bridge” policy encourages guests to visit the bridge, meet our captain and officers, and learn about navigation.

Whether you think of yourself as a photographer, or simply a guest with a camera, you’re likely to return from our expeditions with incredible photos. Every departure of National Geographic Orion travels with a National Geographic photographer aboard. At your side on deck or in the field, they provide inspiration, tips and advice gleaned over the course of significant careers. They also offer supportive critiques and informative presentations. Nothing boosts your confidence like shooting alongside a seasoned pro and getting the same inspiring shot!

In addition, you’re accompanied by a Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructor. These veteran naturalists are specially trained to assist you with camera settings and the basic elements of framing, composition and lighting. Because your photo instructor is also a skilled naturalist, he or she can help you better understand the wildlife, so you can be at the right place, at the right time to capture amazing behavior. You’ll return home a better, more confident photographer for having had this opportunity.

Note: Itineraries and prices listed in this brochure are valid as of publication date, and are subject to change. Under normal conditions, the total expedition cost is guaranteed at the time of booking. However, the published price is determined far in advance of initial departure on the basis of then-existing projections of fuel and other costs. In the event we determine that current costs create an unsustainable financial model, including but not limited to increases in the price of fuel, currency fluctuations, increases in government taxes or levies, or increased security costs, we reserve the right to pass on these costs to you, to cover such unexpected increases. We will always provide a transparent accounting of the reason for such an increase in costs.
