A Hen for Izzy PippikWritten by Aubrey Davis Illustrated by Marie Lafrance

When Shaina finds a magnificent hen, she knows that Izzy Pippik, the hen’s owner, is sure to return for her. In the meantime, Shaina decides she will care for the animal. But when dozens of eggs hatch and rowdy chickens scatter throughout the village, Shaina must fight the entire town if she has any hope of protecting the birds. Inspired by Jewish and Islamic folklore, this is a beautiful tale about doing the right thing, even in the face of adversity.

For more than 30 years, Aubrey Davis has told stories, performing and conducting workshops across Canada and the United States. His books have received glowing reviews and multiple awards, including the Sydney Taylor Award, the Mr. Christie Award (Silver) and the Canadian Jewish Book Awards Children’s Literature Prize. A tale of two sisters — one blue, the other sunny —that celebrates the transformative power of art.

Virginia WolfWritten by Kyo Maclear Illustrated by Isabelle Arsenault

Vanessa’s sister, Virginia, is in a “wolfish” mood — growling, howling and acting very strange. It’s a funk so fierce, the whole household feels topsy-turvy. Vanessa tries everything she can think of to cheer her up, but nothing seems to work. Then Virginia tells Vanessa about an imaginary, perfect place called Bloomsberry. Armed with an idea, Vanessa begins to paint Bloomsberry on the bedroom walls, transforming them into a beautiful garden complete with a ladder and swing “so that what was down could climb up.” Before long, Virginia, too, has picked up a brush and undergoes a surprising transformation of her own. Loosely based on the relationship between author Virginia Woolf and her sister, painter Vanessa Bell, Virginia Wolf is an uplifting story for readers of all ages.

Kyo Maclear is an award-winning writer and novelist. Her first book for children, Spork, has received a number of honors, including a 2011 Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award nomination. She lives in Toronto, Ontario. Isabelle Arsenault has illustrated several children’s books, including Spork, My Letter to the World and Other Poems and Mr. Gaugin’s Heart. She has received many awards for her work, including the Governor General’s Award for Illustration. She lives in Montreal, Quebec.

Animals prepare for a costume party in this playful picture book sure to delight pre-readers and early readers.

Animal MasqueradeWritten and illustrated by Marianne Dubuc

Come one, come all to the animal masquerade! The lion is going as an elephant, the elephant as a parrot, and the parrot as a turtle! Each costume gives way to another, yielding new surprises on every page, and revealing a menagerie of familiar and unusual animals. Young children will delight in the absurd and amusing images (who wouldn’t love a ladybug dressed as a hippopotamus?) and will also appreciate the gags (a fish costumed as a cat is dubbed a “catfish”) and other bits of silly sweetness. Recapping this reading adventure: a detailed panorama at book’s end, showing all the party guests in their fanciful finery.

Marianne Dubuc wrote and illustrated In Front of My House, which was nominated for the 2011 Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award and La Mer, which received a 2008 Prix LUX/Grafika prize. She lives in Montreal, Quebec.

Parents will appreciate the gentle reminder that newer isn’t always better.

Dear FlyaryWritten by Dianne Young Illustrated by John Martz

One-eyed alien Frazzle recounts his flying adventures in a new journal (in alien vernacular, of course). He bighearts his little Model 7, but as time passes, it starts making strange sounds, and Frazzle — pressured by friends and co-workers — wonders if he should trade it in. One day, when it goes CLUNK in the middle of the flyway, it’s clear something must be done. Youngsters will love the out-of-this-world illustrations depicting worlds rife with all manner of alien life. Even more irresistible: an unexpected ending sure to delight careful readers.

Dianne Young won the 1992 Saskatchewan Writers Guild Literary Award for Children’s Literature. Her previous titles include A World of Difference and Purple Hair? I Don't Care! Dianne lives in Martensville, Saskatchewan. John Martz is an illustrator, cartoonist and graphic designer. He won a 2011 Joe Shuster Award and has twice been nominated for a Doug Wright Award. Boys and girls alike will love this chapter book about a quirky but endearing boy who finally gets to be his school’s Star of the Week.

Jasper John Dooley: Star of the Week Written by Caroline Adderson Illustrated by Ben Clanton

At last, it’s Jasper John Dooley’s turn to be Star of the Week at school. Unfortunately, nothing turns out as planned. His Show and Tell falls flat. A new baby at his friend Ori’s house steals his spotlight. And worst of all, the new baby has only-child Jasper wondering if his own family is too small. When Jasper decides to build himself a brother (named Earl) out of wood, Earl’s schoolyard shenanigans send Jasper to the principal’s office! But with a little help from family and friends, things turn around for Jasper. And by the time Friday arrives, he is once again sure that he has what it takes to be a star.

Jasper John Dooley: Star of the Week is the first in a series of chapter books featuring a charismatic and funny central character. An only child with active, loving parents (and a most impressive lint collection), Jasper John Dooley is a true original.

Caroline Adderson lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, with her husband, her dog and the son who lied to her when he said he would always be seven. Illustrator Ben Clanton loves chocolate and wind-up robots. He lives in Seattle, Washington — a rainy city on a big hill —with his wife and puppy. Most days he doodles, and he always likes a good book.

A young marine-biologist-to-be wrestles with his conscience in this engrossing chapter book for boys. A fish story not to be missed.

Lobster ChroniclesLower the Trap Written by Jessica Scott Kerrin

Graeme knows every inch of his fishing community. What’s left for a future marine biologist to discover? But when Graeme’s dad catches a gargantuan lobster with antennae the size of bicycle spokes, Graeme is fascinated. Graeme is even more excited when his dad promises to put the creature up for auction at the town’s annual lobster festival and, if it gets the highest bid, use the prize money to take Graeme to a marine research aquarium. But what if the right thing would be to set the lobster free?

Lower the Trap is the first book in the Lobster Chronicles, a trilogy about what happens in a small coastal town when a giant lobster is caught. Each instalment describes the same events through a different boy’s eyes, and the result is three suspenseful, believable stories and an engrossing reading experience.

Jessica Scott Kerrin is the author of the bestselling Martin Bridge series, inspired by the misadventures of her husband and son. Her first novel, Martin Bridge: Ready for Takeoff! was named an ALA Notable Children’s Book and placed on the Horn Book Fanfare List. In the wake of her mother’s death, a young girl bonds with a wild stallion on Sable Island. A moving chapter book that will especially appeal to horse lovers.

March 9

The Island HorseWritten by Susan Hughes

It’s the early half of the 19th century in coastal Nova Scotia, and almost-ten-year-old Ellie is adjusting to the recent death of her mother. But just when she finally begins to feel happy again, Ellie and her father move to remote Sable Island, a tiny, windblown crescent of grass and sand in the Atlantic. While her father works, Ellie explores the island, feeling alone and furious with her pa for making them leave their beloved home. Even meeting a spirited island girl named Sarah does little to dispel her anger and grief. Then one afternoon, Ellie encounters a wild stallion grazing on the dunes, and slowly forges a secret connection with the beautiful horse she names Orchid. But Ellie soon learns that Orchid and his family are threatened, and it may be up to her to save them. Based on historical fact, this early chapter book is a touching exploration of loss and loneliness and the redemptive power of love and friendship.

Susan Hughes is an award-winning author whose books include Case Closed?, No Girls Allowed, Earth to Audrey and Virginia. She has loved horses since she was a child and has long dreamed of setting a story on Sable Island. Susan lives in Toronto, Ontario.

LarfWritten and illustrated by Ashley Spires

No one believes Larf exists, and he likes it that way. Larf, you see, is a sasquatch, the only sasquatch in the world (or so it seems). He has a very pleasant, and very private, life in the woods, where on any given day he might be found jogging, gardening or walking Eric, his pet bunny. But everything changes one morning when Larf discovers that another sasquatch is scheduled to make an appearance in the nearby city of Hunderfitz. What?! That must mean he’s not the only sasquatch in the world!

Excited by the prospect of having a friend to share hair grooming tips with (and let’s face it, teeter-tottering alone is no fun), Larf disguises himself as a city slicker and heads for Hunderfitz — where he’s in for a couple enormous surprises.

Ashley Spires once again shows her chops for creating irresistible, quirky characters and laugh-aloud stories and illustrations. Readers with little feet and big feet will fall head over heels for Larf.

Ashley Spires grew up in the Pacific Northwest, the supposed stomping grounds of Bigfoot. She is the author and illustrator of a number of books for children, including Small Saul and the adventures of Binky the Space Cat. When the ninja just wants to read quietly, the cowboy is wildly distracting as he drums on rocks, bats a paddleball and gabs on his cell phone. The cowboy’s boisterous mood prompts the ninja and the bear to drop their respective activities, leaving their pal alone to wonder why no one wants to be with him. Can he find the peace and quiet he needs to figure it out?ISBN: 978-1-55453-748-8 • Carton quantity: 58 • Hardcover $16.95 US • $16.95 CDNCurriculum Links: Character Education — Cooperation; Empathy.

The Pirate Girl’s TreasureAn Origami Adventure Written by Peyton Leung Illustrated by Hilary LeungIn this spectacularly original picture book, the story mirrors an origami activity: As a pig-tailed pirate girl travels through mountains, valleys, a cave and finally by sea to reach the treasure her grandfather has hidden for her, imaginative illustrations show different incarnations of a single folded sheet of paper within the scenes. Best of all, clear instructions at the end will let readers recreate the story with just a few folds and tears, transforming a piece of notebook paper into a mountain, hat, cave, boat and really cool pirate shirt.

Peyton Leung is a substitute elementary-school teacher in Toronto, Ontario. He is also a musician. The Pirate Girl’s Treasure is his first picture book. Hilary Leung is a graphic artist in Burlington, Ontario, and a graduate of the illustration program at Sheridan College. His work for Kids Can Press includes the very popular Ninja Cowboy Bear series.

Vote for Me! Written and illustrated by Ben Clanton

Hey, you! Yes, you with the dazzling smile! The donkey wants your vote. So does the elephant. And each will do just about anything to win your support. Brag? Sure! Flatter? Absolutely! Exaggerate, name-call, make silly promises and generally act childish? Yes, yes, yes and yes. Soon, the tension mounts, and these two quarrelsome candidates resort to slinging mud (literally) and flinging insults. And what happens when the election results are in? Well, let’s just say the donkey and the elephant are in for a little surprise — and a certain bewhiskered, third-party candidate is in for a first term.

Vote for Me! is a timely satire of American politics, but it’s a story readers of all nationalities and ages will recognize. Comical, retro illustrations (in shades of blue and red, of course) are completely winning, and the duelling duo’s insult-laden exchanges promise to have readers laughing out loud.

Ben Clanton is an up-and-coming author-illustrator from Seattle who describes himself as a “story scribbler, picture squiggler, book aficionado, child advocate, dragon tamer and avid sock wearer.” Vote for Me! is the first book he has both written and illustrated.

A sea-riously fun collection of simple, safe science experiments and games illustrating the magnificence and vulnerability of our planet’s oceans.

The Big Green Book of the Big Blue SeaWritten by Helaine Becker Illustrated by Willow Dawson

Based on the idea that knowledge is power, The Big Green Book of the Big Blue Sea shows how the ocean works and why this immense ecosystem needs our protection. Experiments using everyday materials help explain scientific concepts, such as why the ocean is salty, how temperature affects water density and why fish don’t get waterlogged.

A focus on pollution and other ecological hazards raises awareness. Young scientists will gain a hands-on understanding of how “booms” clean oil spills and how a garbage patch roughly twice the size of Texas came to exist in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Newsy sidebars bring readers up to date on efforts to combat environmental hazards — such as the use of oysters to help squelch pollution in urban waterways. An ideal tool for classroom use or the perfect way to spend a rainy day, The Big Green Book of the Big Blue Sea is an essential part of any science library.

Helaine Becker is an award-winning children’s author. She has written over 40 books, including the bestselling Looney Bay All-Stars series. She lives in Toronto, Ontario. Willow Dawson is an illustrator and writer working out of Toronto, Ontario. Her recent work includes No Girls Allowed: Tales of Daring Women Dressed as Men for Love, Freedom and Adventure and Lila and Ecco’s Do-It-Yourself Comics Club.

Earth-Friendly Buildings, Bridges and More The Eco-Journal of Corry LapontWritten by Etta Kaner Illustrated by Stephen MacEachern

Introducing Corry Lapont: 12-year-old and aspiring “green” engineer. This dynamic title takes the form of Corry’s scrapbook. It’s a dazzling collection of postcards, brochures and other memorabilia documenting Corry’s research into green design. Kid-friendly language explains the engineering behind some of the planet’s most cutting edge towers, bridges, tunnels, domes, dams, dikes, locks and levees. These structures include the Vizcaya Bridge in Spain, where gondolas transport cars over the Nervion River, and the Channel tunnel, where trains speed between England and France in just 35 minutes. Readers will explore the environmental impact of structures, such as the pros and cons of dam construction and how rainwater can be used to cool buildings. Complex concepts are clarified with simple activities, as well as colorful drawings, fun facts and the occasional wisecrack from Corry’s kid brother, Riley.

Etta Kaner is an elementary school teacher and writer for both children and educators. Her children’s books have won numerous awards, including the Silver Birch Award, the Scientific American Young Readers Book Award and the Science in Society Book Award. She lives in Toronto, Ontario. Stephen MacEachern has illustrated more than 10 children’s books. He is also a web and print designer and has taught illustration at the Sheridan Institute, where he himself studied. Stephen lives in Erin, Ontario, with his wife and two children.
