Fox back in driver’s seat
The return of Head Coach Pat Fox to the Huron Valley Milford sidelines means changes for the Mavs, who will use a"shotgun, no-read, no-huddle, up-tempo offense," according to Fox. The senior-laden defense includes veteran linemenand linebackers. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)
e's back. Three years after heresigned from his post, Pat Foxhas returned as head coach of
Huron Valley Milford and is once againlooking to help the Mavericks return toprominence.
"It's exciting and its fun," he said. "Wehave a lot to build on. We have great kidsand they're good to work with and I lovegoing to practice."
After taking over in 2000, Fox trans-formed Milford virtually overnight from along-time doormat to a yearly contender,as the Mavs had six straight winning sea-sons from 2001 to 2006, including a 10-2district championship team in 2006.
Fox compiled a 50-29 record over eightseasons before relinquishing his post toJeff Hill in 2008. With Hill now at RoyalOak, Fox said he'll come with a differentapproach since he last roamed theMilford sidelines.
"A lot of things have changed. In 2000,we were a double-slot, triple-optionoffense. Now we're a shotgun, no-read, no-huddle, up-tempo offense," he said. "Wecan zone and run more than last year andput the ball up 18 to 20 times and not 30."
Last season, Milford started 4-0 only tolose four of their last five games, includingone-point overtime losses to Howell andrival Huron Valley Lakeland, finishing theyear 5-4 and missing the state playoffs fora second-straight season.
With the departure of 2,000-yard quar-terback Luke Johnson, Milford will turnthe reigns over to junior Alex Larson, who was the junior varsity starter lastseason.
Fox said Larson also played on thevarsity baseball and basketball teams lastyear and is ready for varsity football.
Returning to Milford at running backare two seniors, four-year starter WilliamSchoenle and two-year starter BrandonWallace.
The featured tailbacks will be juniorRobert Ritchie and sophomore DanielWallace.
The Mavericks' offensive line willinclude senior Jacob Morton, a three-year starter, senior and two-year starterDoyle Williams, senior James Fischerand senior Chris Bartoluzzi.
Milford's defensive line is loaded as itis headed by senior Kyle Coggins, who
Coach returns to team he turnedinto powerhouse
H
stands 6-feet and weighs 320 pounds;and junior Derrick Newman, whostands 6-feet-4-inches tall and weighs295 pounds.
Milford's linebackers will be led bysenior Christopher Orr, a three-yearstarter whom Fox calls the Mavs' defen-sive leader and one of the best kids he'sever been around.
Senior safeties Daniel Jacklic andMarc Schwartz will be in charge ofMilford's secondary.
The Mavericks opened the 2011 sea-son on Aug. 26 at Waterford Mott.Milford's home opener will be onThursday, Sept. 1 against WayneMemorial.
Milford will face defending
Kensington Lakes ActivitiesAssociation (KLAA) West championHowell on the road on Sept. 30 and willhost a grudge match against Lakelandto finish the regular season on Oct. 21.
"We want to play great football forour town. We want to win in the play-offs," Fox said. ❏

"I thought our offensive line didwell and our offense meshed well. Ithought our kids pursued well andwere moving around the field," Mooresaid.
Last year, Northern had a record of4-2 with three games remaining, butlost all three to finish 4-5 for a secondconsecutive season.
One person looking to turn thingsaround for Northern is senior quar-terback Kirk Thomas, who broke hisclavicle in last season's openinggame but now looks good, accordingto Moore.
Junior Collin O'Donnell, who filledin admirably for Thomas last year, will be the backup quarterback, butMoore said he should get some
snaps, as well. The two featured backs for the
Knights will be senior Ted Lilley alongwith junior Jake Ginster, both return-ing starters.
Thomas and O'Donnell's main tar-get will be senior wide receiver RyanTowns.
Heading up the Knights' offensiveline will be senior guard JarrettHarmon, along with senior tackleSheldon Islami.
The Knights' defense will be led bylinebackers Andy Rabaut, a senior, and junior Mike Peer.
The defensive line will be headedup by senior Jim Bartsch, while thesecondary will be guarded by juniorsafety Matt Kosmalski and senior cor-nerback Ryan Soulet.
Walled Lake Northern's offensive unit meshed well in four pre-season scrimmages, according to Head Coach Brett Moore. He said speed is this year's teamstrength, but depth is an issue. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)
The Knights will open their seasonwith three games on the road, atLivonia Churchill (Aug. 25), SouthLyon East (Sept. 1) and its KensingtonLakes Activities Association (KLAA)North Division opener at Walled LakeCentral (Sept. 9).
Northern's home opener is Sept. 16against Waterford Mott, and theKnights will host the annual Battle ofBogie Lake against Huron ValleyLakeland on Oct. 6.
"I think our overall team speed andquickness is our strength, but ourdepth is an issue though," Moore said."We have to get a couple bounces andstay injury-free. It's going to comedown to a couple plays, just like everyyear." ❏

ollowing up the best season in aschool's history is a dauntingtask, but Walled Lake Central is
looking to prove it's up to the challenge."We are a playoff football team and
we'll be playing in November," saidVikings Head Coach Robert Meyer.
In 2010, Meyer boldly predicted histeam would repeat as Kensington LakesActivities Association (KLAA) NorthDivision champions.
The Vikings not only did so with anundefeated division record, they alsowon the KLAA Lakes Conference title, won 11 straight after an opening-weekloss to Canton, and advanced to theDivision 2 state semi-finals for the firsttime, where they fell to Division 2 run-ner-up Lowell and finished at 11-2.
Meyer said his 2011 team is moreexperienced because the playoffs gavehis players more preparation.
"We have a lot of experience return-ing after a 13-game season last year. We're very fast and intelligent," he said.
Returning to start at quarterback issenior Zac Leimbach, who passed for700 yards and 10 touchdowns and alsorushed for 900 yards and 14 touchdownslast season.
Also returning is senior running backKJ Schultz, who has rushed for over 700yards each of the last two seasons.Seniors Curtis Booth and Zach Hill willalso be two running backs that will gettheir share of carries.

games are road contests against HuronValley Lakeland (Sept. 30) and arch-rival Walled Lake Western (Oct. 6).
"We've had great preparation upuntil this point. We're going to knowwhere we stand early," Meyer said.

Captains’ goal: reverse trend
Waterford Kettering is in the midst of a quarterback battle, with Chase Kreilach and Danny Hubbell vying for the startingjob. The Captains will run a 4-4 defensive scheme led by linebackers Brett Mortimore and Dylan Denomme. (SpinalColumn Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)
aterford Kettering is looking tomove up from kings of Waterford
public school teams to KensingtonLakes Activities Association (KLAA)North Division contenders in 2011.
"We have taken steps to improve ourprogram and will continue to work hardin order to compete in this very talenteddivision," said Kettering Head CoachMike Fras.
Fras took over as Kettering's headcoach last year after spending the previ-ous two seasons as an assistant atWaterford Our Lady of the Lakes. Hewas also a former head coach at WalledLake Northern.
Kettering only won one game in 2010and it came against arch-rival WaterfordMott, marking the Captains' thirdstraight win in the series. NowKettering looks to reverse a trend of 12straight losing seasons.
The Captains' main weapon will behighly-touted senior running backJustin Santana, who rushed for over 800yards in 2010 and is aiming for more thisyear. He will be joined by fellow runningback, junior Alec Spurlock.
Kettering also has a quarterback bat-tle on their hands with junior ChaseKreilach and sophomore Danny Hubbellcompeting for the starting job.
On the offensive line, sophomoreBrett Reynolds will start at center whileseniors Danny Stieler and DaultonArthur and sophomore Matt Okaiye willreturn as starting linemen.
Senior Brett Mortimore will see timeat tight end.
"Our running backs and offensive linehad a good amount of playing time lastseason. But, our weaknesses are aninexperienced quarterback along withreceivers," Fras said. "The players upfront need to be strong and help themout."
On defense, Kettering will run a 4-4formation led by senior linebackersMortimore and Dylan Denomme.
Sophomore Matt Okaiye will returnas a starter on the defensive line, whilesenior Vince Cooper will start at freesafety along with Spurlock. Santana willalso play at cornerback.
Fras said his defensive squad isquicker than last season's, but that the

The Captains will then host therival Corsairs on Oct. 8.
