Kickstarter: Key Characteristics• Kickstarter is an international crowdfunding platform.

• Kickstarter primarily focuses on technology, art, film and music, although many other types of projects are permitted. While some campaigns are open to interpretation, Kickstarter claims that it only funds "projects," which is to say events with a beginning and an end. They do not allow campaigns for ongoing funding or start-ups.

• Kickstarter has evolved into supporting only "All or nothing" style funding. This means that when you must at least meet your financial goal, which must be stated as fails, part of the launch of your campaign, in order to keep the money your donors gave you. If your campaign fails, all donations are returned, and no fees are charged for the campaign. If you raise more than your goal, Kickstarter gives you all the money you raised. However, Kickstarter does charge a small fee against the entire amount of money raised.

• To ensure the highest rate of successful campaigns, Kiskstarter requires that every campaign must first be examined by a (human) panel.
