Forging a Digital Future for Libraries

When people see the new KIC Click for the first time, the most common expression is “it’s so beautiful.” And with True2Touch, it’s as easy to use as it is beautiful. Are there any compromises? You decide.

The KIC Click captures over 20 book pages per minute for instant access on tablets, notebooks, smart devices and easy transfer to desktop PCs and servers. With a bed size 30% larger than its nearest competitor, it captures up to 22 x16 inch books and materials at an uncompromising resolution of 300dpi.

Photocopiers, PCs, monitors and keyboards clutter up otherwise beautiful libraries across America. The smooth, triple-layer, pearlescent white KIC Click totally reverses that trend. It adds beauty to the most beautiful libraries. Inspired by an outstanding effort of the tablet industry to turn technology into something more like jewelry or a fashion accessory than a computer, the pearlescent KIC Click evokes comments like, “We care about the appearance of our library and this machine will complement the most beautiful library!”

KIC usage reports say it all! Consistent and reliable system metrics are crutial tools to determine the value of any hardware and/or software solution. KIC systems automatically generate statistical usage reports every day. The system is configurable, so library management can opt to email the reports to one or more designated KIC ‘administrators’ for review and analysis.

The majority of the statistics represented here are derived from non-charging KIC systems. For verification statistical data, please contact us at DLSG 800.378.5432.

These two graphs show that KIC systems are worth walking to, whether they are side-by-side or spread out throughout the library. The higher and faster growing usage rates of the side-by-side systems might be resulting from a more active sharing of the many ways that images can be used in an academic environment.

KIC Usage Statistics

Delivery & Storage Methods by Library Type File Format by library Type

While USB drives (pocket-sized memory devices) and smart devices are overwhelmingly popular, email is a very important method of aquiring scanned images from KIC systems. Origi-nally thought by academic library administrators to be a much needed output option, FTP is used only about 1% of the time.

It’s not surprising that the JPEG file format is most popular with art and architecture libraries. It’s also in-teresting to see how the popularity of PDF versus JPEG varies among libraries. Notice that medical and law students have little use for the TIFF file format.

This graph shows steady growth continuing even after four years as users spread the word to their fellow students and colleagues.

This graph shows a KIC system that after many years is showing just 12% year-over-year growth, but continues to fluctuate dramatically with the academic schedule.

In the U.S. alone, KIC serves over four million students at the top “brick and mortar” (non-online) colleges and universities. With the introduction of the KIC BookEdge and KIC Click, KIC is now affordable for virtually all institutions of higher learning and full-service public libraries. Last decade, libraries typically ‘added’ several KICs, but since 2010 libraries have begun to replace their entire patron-use copier fleets with self-serve book scanning systems.

Beautiful Images - Fast and Easy

Thick books with stiff spines and content that runs deep into the bookfold are often damaged when copied. KIC Click easily cap-tures content well into the bookfold without damaging the spine.

No More Book Spine Damage!Capture Deep into the Bookfold

Most books curve at the spine - some rather dramatically. KIC Click gets deep into the bookfold of tightly-bound volumes by capturing from two angles, and easily straightens out the worst curves, producing clear, straight, professional quality images.

Text is clear and undistorted. KIC automatically adds margins for print-ready image quality.

electronic reserves, course curriculum materials and re-search reports. These automatic image treatment functions also save a lot of faculty, administrator, and student time.

KIC Click captures “two-up” pages of a book, ana-lyzes the single image, and automatically splits it into two separate imag-es. In addition, the black edges are automatically removed and the content is straightened, producing clean, professional look-ing images — important for

The capture area of copiers is about half that of KIC while the cap-ture area of typical scanners is smaller still. With a large 16 X 22 inch capture area, the KIC system captures it all! The smaller cap-ture areas of standard scanners and copiers are shown below.

KIC’s face-up scanning enables users to capture multiple pages far more easily than ever before — books no longer need to be flipped over to turn the page and then flipped back over for each scan or copy. KIC captures content up to ten times faster than a typical flat-bed scanner and about three times faster than a high speed copier. In addition, it produces color or black & white images for the same cost, which equates to substantial savings. KIC also promotes a cleaner environment by reducing paper and toner use.

Comparative Speed Chart

KIC Click vs. CopiersSince the first KIC was delivered to an academic library one day in 2004, the era of photocopiers for patron use in academic libraries and even public libraries were numbered. With the recent expansion of the KIC family to include systems for under $4,000 (e.g. the KIC BookEdge Tabletop system) and the rapid explosion of tablet computers and electronic readers, the de-mand in academic libraries for electronic copies has substan-tially outstripped the demand for printed copies. The demand for electronic copies in public libraries will soon reach a tipping point as well.

The ability to capture hundreds of pages of research into a tab-let or electronic reader and search through that material and on the Internet with a tablet, eReader or notebook PC that can be used just about anywhere is highly convenient and immensely valuable. In this digital age, academic libraries are compelled to go hybrid for three reasons: 1) the high demand for digital content; 2) their existing print collections contain vast amounts of information that cannot be found on the Internet; and 3) stu-dents are surprisingly receptive to the price of electronic copies – typically free.

So what about the cost of KIC systems as compared with photo copiers? There are three main factors driving the cost of pho-tocopies: 1) each copy requires toner and ink; 2) photocopi-ers require a lot of maintenance due to the number of moving parts; and 3) the distributed service model of all major photo-copier brands. In contrast, KIC has split the functions into three separate machines, choosing the best of breed for each. As a result, KIC offers the best book scanners by themselves or with a loose paper (ADF) scanner. An off-the-shelf laser or inkjet printer can be added to any KIC system.

This graph compares the total costs of one color KIC Click sys-tem with two color copiers and with two black and white copiers. Both copiers are the kinds typically seen in academic libraries. One KIC Click is compared with two copiers because it’s face-up operation yields well over two times the performance of a

typical copier. The costs are broken into three main areas: equipment and main-tenance; consumables; and patron usage time. With KIC Click, electronic output is assumed to be preferred 90% of the time. That ratio can range from 75-95% elec-tronic in 2012, but is assured to rise in the future.

At a usage rate of 100,000 pages per year, thesenumbers represent a five-year savings of $101,681!

Ease-of-use is a central feature of KIC. It’s large, 22 inch touch screen and its large “Scan” and “Save, Send or Print” buttons that occupy a very large portion of the touch screen clearly convey how easy KIC is to use. The Save button defaults to an output method and file format that is selectable by the institution. If a flash drive is inserted, KIC detects this and the output button changes to indicate that it will save to the flash drive. Users can override the default output method by manually selecting one or more other methods of output.

Click’s sleek look and elegant design put the full KIC self-serve digitization functionality into a mere 25 inch width. It’s large, 22 inch touch screen and capture surface are at the perfect heights when placed on a typical table or desktop. The KIC Click also has optional matching ‘K-legs’ for freestanding operation.

KIC Click’s high speed is derived as much from its ultra-simple, true two-touch interface as from its face-up design that obviates the need to flip books over and over again during the capture process.

KIC’s self-serve digitize-on-demand capabilities leverage your library’s most valuable assets — its print collections.

The Hybrid LibraryTo fully earn the ‘hybrid library’ designa-tion, a library’s existing print collections must be available in digital format. KIC systems allow your students and faculty to select material for quick and easy self-serve digitization, providing a valuable conduit between your print collections and patron tablets, PCs, eReaders and smart devices.

All KIC systems are compatible with all standard copy card and coin-op devic-es. Since KIC transfers images to users’ computers electronically, costly expend-ables are avoided, even for color! The li-brary can opt to keep all revenue it collects.

We know the importance of resource sharing. To help squeeze more value out of your investment, KIC can be configured to perform Interlibrary Loan work in addition to self-serve capture at any KIC station!

Use a USB flash drive to enable ILL scanning at a KIC station and temporarily access shared folders on a network. When you unplug the USB, the KIC station automatically returns to its reg-ular self-serve scanning station functionality.

Digital images don’t have the limitations of physical copies. They can instantly be shared with fellow researchers around the world via email, dramatically facilitating collaboration.

KIC avoids the digital rights management conundrum. Each digitization is for a single use, but thousands of patrons can digitize content from the same book, yet preserve the book’s spine.

For general purpose scanning by admin-istrators and faculty, simply write a depart-ment password file to a flash drive. When a user plugs in the USB ‘key’, KIC recognizes the password and allows the user to save scanned images to shared folders.
