Khulu Academy Newsletter November A lot is going on in ELA! Students have been working on writing mechanics, focusing on capitalization and comma rules. Our language study has focused on commonly confused words such as principal and principle, whose and who’s, and accept and except. Next week, we will be learning about how to avoid double negatives. Book clubs are underway and the students are doing great. They have learned how to ask good questions and engage in meaningful discussions about their books. Some students are also meeting with me in guided reading groups to boost their reading skills. All middle schoolers should be reading at least 30 minutes per night, five days a week. The best way to become a better reader is by reading! If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 312-399-7793. Khulu Academy Newsletter November 2015

Math In the month of November, we are wrapping up our first quarter of the school year.

In 6th grade, we are starting a new unit in which the students will be working with fractions and learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with real world applications.

In 7th grade, students are using ratios, fractions, and percents to make comparison between quantities. They learn to choose the most appropriate type of comparison for a given situations.

In 8th grade, the students are learning to identify real numbers and their sub-categories. They will use square roots to apply the Pythagorean Theorem to real world scenarios.

Mr. Wong and Ms. Wedster would also like to thank Mrs. Flores and Ms. Escobedo for chaperoning the 8th graders trip to the Adler Planetarium.

Science & Social Science

We have finished Science for the quarter and are into our third week of Social Studies. We ended with the 6th graders getting to explore the solar system at Adler Planetarium. Thank you to Mrs. Cano and Mr. Zavala who chaperoned.

The 6th graders are currently learning about Mesopotamia and how geography plays a role in the development of a civilization. They are also researching various inventions from that time period and how they have evolved over time.

The 7th graders have been learning about the 13 colonies and their government, along with the British government. They are seeing what types of acts lead to the American Revolution. Students will continue to understand why the Revolution occurred. * I will be offering extra support for preparing for

the Constitution tests after school. A form will be sent out shortly with times and days.

The 8th graders are learning about the causes of WWI, main events during WWI, and how the U.S was involved in the war. They are learning through technology, debates, and various primary and secondary sources.
