SEPTEMBER 2010 5

In autumn 2009 IFTF set up a small fast-track working committee aimed at making proposals to ensure that IFTF is well equipped to meet the challenges of the future. Many have expressed the need for change primarily because the global fur industry has changed character over the last decade, but also because pressure on the fur production in some countries has increased markedly. Furthermore, our industry is too small to have a very fine-meshed organizational structure. Farmers and buyers have basically the same interests: to preserve fur production and a free world market. The Committee has now completed their work. The results were discussed at IFTF’s board meeting in Copenhagen in June, and the Board decided to recommend IFTF’s General Assembly to adopt the proposed changes. The General Assembly will be held in England in October. At the meeting the Board set up a small committee that is to ensure that the proposed changes are implemented without delay so that the new IFTF is in place within a reasonable timeframe. The main changes are that there will be an equal representation in IFTF’s Board of members with roots in the trade and members with roots in fur production and auction houses. Also the geographical dispersal of the Board will be strengthened so that the Board reflects that IFTF is a global organization. The Board’s role in the daily work will be markedly scaled down. The Board will recruit a CEO with skills in professional political work, communications and general management, who will recruit the staff. The Board is still to approve the

strategy and budget and will also follow up that the CEO meets the objectives at the budgeted cost. The office will move from London to Brussels. Brussels is Europe’s political capital, and Europe is currently being harassed by the biggest political problems in relation to fur production. It is essential that a political organization is physically present in the centre of power. The OA label system will continue, but it was agreed to review the system in the light of experience gained in the four years the system has been operating. The auction houses will continue to fund IFTF’s work. The auction houses will be required to pay a contribution equivalent to at least 0.5% of their turnover from 2012. The agreement runs provisionally for four years. There will probably be some who do not like the changes. However, it is important

to keep in mind that an organization should be designed to solve future problems. One day future becomes history. Since by definition the old days are always the best, we are usually by nature a little sceptical of change. IFTF has now turned its back on the past and faces the future. Breeders, auction houses and buyers are equally strongly represented in the new IFTF. We are well equipped to meet future challenges. The whole industry should be proud and rejoice - and the changes do not prevent us from continuing to talk about the good old days.

- Skin expertise is the core of our business, says Hanne Kirkegaard, head of Kopenhagen Fur Academy. Every year she coordinates training in skin knowledge and sorting for over 1,000 persons, ranging from fur breeders to retailers, and every skin quality course is tailored to meet the needs of students which include fur breeders, manufacturers, retailers and other interest groups. Kopenhagen Fur’s employees form the backbone of Fur Academy. - Our skin sorting is praised as the best in the fur industry, because our employees are highly qualified. Our ambition is to maintain and develop that position, and the key to do it is training. Our skin expert employees meet on a regular basis to discuss the various qualities of the skins in order to make sure that they all bring the same message. The level at Kopenhagen Fur must be the highest, Hanne Kirkegaard says. Skin sorting courses, livestock sorting, retail programmes, certified boutique programmes and auction programmes are all standard courses at Kopenhagen Fur Academy, but if needed Hanne Kirkegaard is able to tailor a course for a specific purpose. This is the case later this year

when Kopenhagen Fur launches a new and improved edition of the advanced internet based fur breeding programme, FurFarmWeb. The so-called FarmCockpit has a lot of new features and a tailored course will be offered to the breeders to make sure that they make the best possible use of the new breeding programme.

IN-HOUSE SPECIALISTS DO THE JOB- The fur business is highly specialized, and it often makes sense to use our own specialized employees as teachers. The development of the new breeding programme was an in-house project, and consequently the best people to educate the farmers on how to use the programme are also found in-house, Hanne Kirkegaard says. In fact the development and offering of tailored courses is a common task for Hanne Kirkegaard. When putting together a training course, she takes advantage of the fact that Kopenhagen Fur is involved in every part of the value chain: - I am in a favourable position, because I have so many products on the shelves, she says. Another such tailor-made course was put together in May, when Ars

THE QUALITY ROAD

Fur quality is a result of knowledge, which again is a result of education. Five years ago Kopenhagen Fur set up its own school, Kopenhagen Fur Academy and since then more than 1,000 persons a year have attended courses held by the academy to improve their skills.

Sutoria School from Milan paid a visit to Kopenhagen Studio to learn about the possibilities of using fur for shoes and handbags; the very two areas for which Ars Sutoria School is famous. - They wanted to learn about a lot of things, ranging from fur techniques to animal welfare, so we designed a special course for them, Hanne Kirkegaard says. The manufacturing programme is a new product on the shelves of Kopenhagen Fur Academy. The programme is aimed at Chinese fur

manufacturers, and Kopenhagen Fur Academy provides the training that each group of manufacturers needs in terms of skin knowledge, skin techniques, trends, international marketing, branding and general management.

FINE EVALUATIONSAt the end of every course students hand in their evaluation of the course and Kopenhagen Fur Academy is really pleased that the average score is 4.6 out of 5 (2009 and 2010 figures). The high score

doesn’t surprise Hanne Kirkegaard: - Of course I am glad that our students are satisfied, but I believe the reason for the high average score is that our courses make a difference. The students can use the knowledge they gain at the courses. An example is a Chinese fur manufacturer: having been trained in skin sorting and auction procedures, he can buy directly at Kopenhagen Fur and needs not pay commission to skin dealers any longer. The education we offer is unique and is not available at any Ivy League university.

As one of the largest players in the Danish-Chinese trade, it was only natural that Kopenhagen Fur was present at several occasions during the Chinese Trade Minister’s visit to Denmark in May. It was the Chinese Trade Minister’s first visit to Denmark. Part of the trade delegation paid a visit to Kopenhagen Fur where they met with Kopenhagen Fur’s managing director, Mr Torben Nielsen. Torben Nielsen was very pleased with the visit and said afterwards: - The export of fur skins represents about one quarter of the total Danish export to China/Hong Kong. Therefore, we are pleased to participate in the Chinese Trade delegation’s visit to Denmark.Later the very same day Kopenhagen Fur was represented at the largest Danish-Chinese finance and trade symposium ever in Denmark. The Danish Minister for Economic and Business Affairs, Brian Mikkelsen and the Chinese Trade Minister, Chen Deming spoke about the Danish-Chinese business relation. - Danish investments and businesses are very welcome in China. For the last 60 years Denmark and China have had a good business relation, and Denmark is one of the highest ranging investment countries for Chinese businesses who want to get into the European market, Chen Deming said. He also praised the Danish efforts in areas of green technology and computer science and expressed hope that Danish and Chinese businesses will continue to exchange ideas.

TSINGHUA UNIVERSITY In the evening, a chosen few Danish representatives from major Danish companies were invited to a dinner party

in Tivoli in the presence of the Chinese Trade Minister, Chen Deming. Managing Director, Torben Nielsen participated and he got a chance to speak to Chen Deming. - Being from Shanghai, the Trade Minister was well-informed about the

fur industry in Haining and the leather and fur market in Shanghai. He was very pleased to hear about our collaboration with Tsinghua University with a view to the fact that we can offer an MBA in fur, said Torben Nielsen.

FUR FARMERS FLOCK TO CHINADuring September and October 2010, close to 300 fur farmers from all over Europe will visit China. Every year, Kopenhagen Fur arranges a trip to a country that works with fur, and for the fourth time the trip goes to China. Most of the travellers are from Denmark, but there are also participants from Poland, Holland, Sweden and Norway who want to visit China.

The ten-day trip starts in Shanghai, where the fur farmers will visit Expo and some of the many fur markets in the city. After trips to Suzhou and Tongli, the trip ends in Beijing where the guests get a chance to walk on The Great Wall, visit the fur markets in the city and visit one of the many fur factories in the region.

CHINESE TOP DESIGNER INSPIRED TO FUR PROJECTFamed Chinese furniture designer Xiaojie Zhu visited Kopenhagen Fur and Kopenhagen Studio during the June auction. The stay was inspiring enough for Mr. Zhu to proclaim an art project involving fur and furniture to be finished within six months. Originally a carpenter, Mr. Zhu used to run some 60 furniture shops, but nowadays he is devoted to furniture design in his company Opal Furniture. A follower of the Taoist philosophies, the internationally recognized designer is fond of naturalness, which easily explains his interest in fur. Much of his design is constructed from tree and leather materials.

- I like things natural. Fur is a part of nature, and I am excited about getting access to fur, Xiaojie Zhu says and explain that the fur art project might well “inspire businessmen to start dreaming”. Among other things Mr. Zhu has delivered furniture to the Chinese pavilion at EXPO 2010.

NEWS IN BRIEF

The June auction’s female top lot was bought for 600 DKK (100 USD) per skin by Chinese manufacturer Zhang Yong Liang.

The Brown Velvet female skins will be used for a fur coat which Zhang Yong Liang will exhibit at his factory, which is located near Shanghai. Zhang Yong Liang did not plan to buy the top lot. Actually, it is the first time in ten years that he has participated in an auction at Kopenhagen Fur. - The market for mink skins and mink coats has grown explosively in China during recent years, so that is why I have returned to Kopenhagen Fur after ten years to buy mink skins, Zhang Yong Liang says.

He bought the top lot because of the good quality of the skins. In general, he is very impressed with the quality of the skins at the auction. - The auction here is very professional, and the sorting system is really good. Being here gives me an idea of where the fur market is going, Zhang Yong Liang says.

The rapid growth in the fur industry has made Zhang Yong Liang invest. He is going to open three fur shops next year, so he needs a lot of mink skins. His shops are going to be located in three different parts of China; one in Xin Jiang, one in Xian, and one in Haining. Zhang Yong Liang is looking forward to using more mink skins in his production.

Kam Lam of K C Enterprises bought the auction’s male top lot consisting of White Velvet males, for 780 DKK (130 USD) per skin.

MAGNIFICENT FUR SHOW AT EXPO

Kopenhagen Fur hosted a fashion show which included not only the creations of Danish designers, but also of selected Chinese designers from Tsinghua University. At the fashion show, creations interpreting H.C. Andersen fairy-tales such as The Nightingale, The Little Mermaid and Thumbelina were showcased. Among the Danish designers were Cecilie Toklum, Ole Yde, Julie Fagerholt, Soulland and Benedikte Utzon. The impressive fur show was visited by, among others, HRH Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, Brian Mikkelsen, the Danish Minister for Economic and Business Affairs, and Frank Jensen, the Lord Major of the City of Copenhagen. - One of our most important strategic goals is to support fashion and design, says Torben Nielsen, managing director of Kopenhagen Fur, and continues: - We are proud to be given this opportunity to show Denmark and China the sublime in fur design. It was a magnificent day displaying to the Chinese just how creative and innovate we are in Denmark. says Torben Nielsen. To Kopenhagen Fur, participating in Expo 2010 in Shanghai represents a milestone underlining the company’s success in China; one of the reasons for the success being the close cooperation with China in terms of education. On Thursday 30 June, a new agreement was signed with Tsinghua University where furriers, business people and designers are trained under the management of Kopenhagen Studio, Kopenhagen Fur’s international centre for

fur design and fashion. - Our strategy has always been to establish ties to our customers through knowledge sharing and education, says Torben Nielsen. - Once the Chinese become familiar with the business practices and the fashion and design traditions of the West and vice versa, trade will grow increasingly flexible, Torben Nielsen continues. And that is precisely the contribution made by Kopenhagen Studio at Tsinghua University. At the university, students can obtain a mini MBA or graduate as furriers or designers.

“We are proud to be given this opportunity to show Denmark and China the sublime in fur design. It was a magnificent day displaying to the Chinese just how creative and innovate we are in Denmark.”

Thanks to Danish mink farmers, Denmark is first choice when the Chinese buy fur. This was clearly underscored on 29 June at a magnificent fashion show on Denmark Day in Shanghai in the Danish pavilion at the World Exhibition Expo 2010.

If diamonds are a girl’s best friend as Marilyn Monroe once sang, her most important accessory nowadays is her handbag. In the spring 2010 some of the largest fashion houses showed handbags of fur on the international fashion shows. On catwalks in Paris, Milan and New York, designers such as Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Kenzo and Louis Vuitton showcased their designs of a woman’s important accessory. At Kopenhagen Studio, Creative Development Manager Lone Olsen is aware of the trend. Last fall, she and the Danish shoe designer Cecilie Toklum followed a course at the famous shoe and handbag school Ars Sutoria in Milan. Senior instructor of the school, Paolo Marenghi, visited Kopenhagen Studio this spring to work together with Lone Olsen and Cecilie

Toklum on fur bag creations. - Even though it is difficult, we need to learn how to create bags of fur as it is an innovative and new accessory in demand, said Paolo Marenghi during his visit. Lone Olsen agrees with Paolo Marenghi that fur bags will become an important fashion item. Kopenhagen Studio has already decided to make some samples of their fur bags. Nowadays, women spend much money on bags, so it is up to us to make sure that

fur bags are also represented in that market. Fur bags appeal to a different type of woman. - A woman who would not buy a fur coat could probably easily see herself with a fur bag, Lone Olsen says. She is excited about creating bags of fur, but she is also realistic about the challenge. - The challenge is to make the fur bags look smart and youthful. It is not so complicated to make a bag entirely of fur. But the market wants different designs, and that means the use of metal, fur, leather and other materials, all in one bag. That also involves different craftsmanship and that makes it complicated, says Lone Olsen. The consumers have to be content with the fabulous fur bags which are already on the market, while the new fur bags are being designed.

“A woman who would not buy a fur coat could probably easily see herself with a fur bag. ”

FUR BAGS ARE STEALING THE FASHION PICTURE Big bags, small bags, party bags, but, most importantly, fur bags were presented all over the world during the spring fashion weeks.

THREE WEEKS FULL OF FURSo much as 17 trainees attended the three-week sorting and auc-tion procedures course at Kopenhagen Fur in June to solidify the knowledge of fur. A time well spent, the trainees think.

“I have learned so much about the skins, and that will help me in future. “

It is the last day of the course. For a final test, the 17 trainees attending the sorting and auction procedures course are assembled in the auction room with their teachers and the auctioneers to act as buyers in a staged auction. There is a nervous tension in the room, and all the trainees are very excited. They focus on the orders that fictitious customers have placed trying to remember the advice that chief auctioneer Per Knudsen gave them, when they had lessons in good behaviour in the auction room two days earlier. Per Knudsen told them: - There are three basic tricks as to how to get the skins you want. 1. Be prepared. Know what you want to buy, and be aware how much you will pay for the skins. 2. Give the auctioneer your clear signals. Know the signals for buying specific skins and a whole string and also the signals for drops. 3. Make eye contact with the spotter and the auctioneer so they know that you are interested in the skins announced. But at the moment, most of the trainees seem to have forgotten all about the tricks. After the test, the Greek trainee Demitrios Vlachakis admits that he did not prepare himself enough for the test. - I did not manage so well. I inspected the skins and wrote down the price that I was willing to pay for the skins, but I did not prepare myself enough, he says. Even though he did not manage well at the staged auction, he is still pleased with the course. - For my family business, I need to learn how Kopenhagen Fur sorts their skins, and how to see the difference between the qualities, Demitrios Vlachakis says. Expopel Hellas S.A is his family business that has been in the fur business for 40 years. The course is one of the steps Demitrios Vlachakis has taken to get a better knowledge of the fur business. Chinese Yun Bai’s family is also in the fur business, and she finds that the course

gives her a better understanding of how the business works. - I have learned so much about the skins, and that will help me in future. However, it has been hard sometimes. After a long day, my eyes flicker when I look at the skins, says Yun Bai with a smile.

KNOWLEDGE GIVES YOU AN ADVANTAGE Yun Bai and Demitrios Vlachakis are not attending the course for the same reasons. Demitrios hopes to become a buyer for his company, but Yun Bai does not think she will be a buyer for her company ever as many others are better than she is. - But this course has given me an advantage over those who have not taken it. Even though I may not be a buyer, I know the different types and qualities now, and it will be easier for me to tell the buyer what to buy, Yun Bais says. Demitrios Vlachakis agrees. He also feels that such a course where you get to know your way around a big auction house like Kopenhagen Fur gives you an edge. - Everybody can buy skins, especially if money is not an issue. You just keep racing your hand. But if you want to be good and not spend too much money you need to learn some methods, and I have learned some here, Demitrios says. As Demitrios Vlachakis and Yun Bai have different prospects for the future it is different subjects they would have liked more of. - I would have liked to spend more time in the auction room. Twice is not enough, Demitrios Vlachakis says. - I would have liked to spend much more time in Kopenhagen Studio. It is a dream world to be there to learn about new methods, Yun Bai said. Both of them may get their wishes after the course. Demitrios Vlachakis attended the June auction at Kopenhagen Fur, and Yun Bai is planning her next trip to Denmark. - I may come back soon. As soon as I get home, I will tell my father that there is much more to learn here, Yun Bai says.

HAUTE COUTURE FUR IN CHINA

BY LISA YU YANG AND CHEN WEIXIAN

China’s No.1 haute couture designer, Ms. Guo Pei joined Kopenhagen Fur’s designer programme in spring 2009. Already the first year, the partnership resulted in sophisticated and exquisite fur styles that rocked the China International Fashion Week in November 2009. Guo Pei‘s ability to take the audience on a journey of pure luxury goes very well with Kopenhagen Fur’s world of luxury. For Autumn/Winter 2010/2011, Guo Pei and Kopenhagen Fur co-operated in creating three extraordinary haute couture dresses. The dresses were shown at a show which was staged like a fairy-tale where each dress told a unique story of its own. The three dresses that were made in cooperation with Kopenhagen Fur were embellished with the beautiful hand-embroidery that is so symbolic for Guo Pei.

Every year, China Fashion Week awards designers in different categories. Guo Pei has already received a variety of prizes, and this time, she is decorated with Best Women’s Wear Designer. Ms Guo Pei has been involved in fashion design for 22 years, first as the chief designer for a fashion company and then as the founder of her own fashion house Rose Studio which has sealed its status as the leading haute couture studio in China after ten years’ hard work. Along the way, she has bagged numerous awards and won the patronization of the cream of the Chinese society, including state leaders, celebrities and stars. Guo Pei is most well-known for dressing all the TV hosts and performers in the annual glamorous New Year Gala Show by China Central Television (CCTV),

“Fur is so versatile! It is perfect for haute couture, and it is also ideal for

making light and airy pieces like flowers.”

which almost all the households in China watched. She also created styles for athletes attending the Beijing Olympics and designed costumes for Puccini’s world famous opera, Tosca, when it was first shown at the beautiful new opera house in Beijing – the National Center of Performing Arts. Rose Studio is situated in a quiet community in the north of Beijing. Hundreds of designers and artisans put their talent and craftsmanship to work under Guo Pei’s creative baton. High society customers are emerging in China and they appreciate the value of uniqueness and luxury by haute couture. Some customers fly all the way to Beijing to enjoy the service of Guo Pei who is known and respected for her great design,

superb quality and perfectionism. Guo Pei is a big fan of fur, and she is bold when testing new techniques. The collaboration with Kopenhagen Fur has significantly pushed up her fur customers’ demand. The high-quality skins of wide variety supplied by Kopenhagen Fur dazzle them. It is not surprising that Guo Pei has an eye on fur even when thinking about spring and summer styles. - Fur is so versatile! It is perfect for haute couture, and it is also ideal for making light and airy pieces like flowers, she says. Currently working for an opera, she is ready to use fur for the costumes. An exhibition or fashion show in Paris this year is also on the drawing board. And again, Kopenhagen Fur will be by her side.

Von Trier’s acclaimed movie, which in 2000 won

the Cannes Film Festival’s top prize, the Palme

d’Or, starred the eclectic Icelandic singer Bjork and

French veteran actress Catherine Deneuve.

The story is about a Czech immigrant factory worker

in the United States who becomes blind because of

a congenital disease and is scraping a living while

trying to save money for an operation to avoid the

same fate for her 12-year-old son. The opera will be

performed in English.

the c l a s s i c w a t c hNo other watch is engineered quite like a Rolex. The Datejust, introduced in 1945,

was the first wristwatch to display the date through an aperture on the dial. Its

unique magnifying Cyclops eye, added a few years later, became recognised as

a Rolex design standard. Now in a larger, more distinguished 41 mm size, the

Datejust II is a natural evolution of a classic. The Datejust II is presented here in

Rolex signature Rolesor, a unique combination of 904L steel and 18 ct yellow gold.
