KEVIN THE SESSION STYLISTTo understand KEVIN.MURPHY is to understand our founder’s career. A salon stylist will sit with a client for up to an hour, then the client leaves. A session stylist can be working with a model for 10-12 hours at a time, and their career depends on delivering Vogue cover hair every time. Unsatisfied with the performance of the products he was being given (the looks simply falling flat during a shoot), Kevin recognized the need for weightless products that provided performance, strength and longevity. How was he to do this?... Skincare technology – delivering weightless texture. And from this realization, KEVIN.MURPHY was born.

Passionate about the importance of using products that do not harm yourself or the environment, Kevin realized there was not a product line that satisfied all of these needs.

VITAMINSThe KEVIN.MURPHY range uses vitamin esters that are more effective in preventing damage than traditional methods. The vitamins are simply absorbed into the hair after being deposited onto the cuticle, penetrating deep into the cortex of the hair. These vitamins reduce the formation of split ends, repairing damaged hair. The antioxidants, topical vitamins and vitamin esters (E and C), will increase the speed at which the hair and scalp will recover, repair and regenerate.

THE ANTIOXIDANT RANGEAntioxidants fight the breakdown of hair on a cellular level, eradicating dryness, reducing breakage, and repairing chemical damage. Hair specifically requires antioxidants as every service you get from a salon is an oxidizing process, in which oxidizing is like rusting and decaying the hair. WHY ESSENTIAL OILS?Essential oils are naturally regenerative and anti-oxidizing, plus they can rebuild and repair the hair on a cellular level. We choose to use paper packaging that is made from post consumer waste and all of our secondary packaging is paper or cardboard. We chose square packaging that holds more volume and uses 40% less plastic in an aim to take up less space, less space in landfill. The KEVIN.MURPHY GREEN.SALON Project is a virtual salon that demonstrates initiatives that salons andindividuals can undertake to reduce their carbon footprint and the impact on the environment whilst saving money.

Furthermore, KEVIN.MURPHY is proudly collaborating with Al Gore’s climate change leadership program The Climate Reality Project. A non-profit global organization, The Climate Reality Project is dedicated to educating the public about the science and impacts of climate change and to work towards solutions at a grassroots level worldwide. KM.CONNECTEDPODCASTSKEVIN.MURPHY understands that hairdressers are very visual and like to learn by watching. For this reason we have added to our website short videos called "podcasts." These podcasts are our way of using the latest technology to bring information to the hairdressers. The podcasts contain information about our ingredients, step-by-step styling techniques, as well as information on how to use each product. An easy to use search feature on the website makes these podcasts instantly and easily accessible. From an education standpoint they offer a new innovative way of learning, a virtual classroom without books and without manuals. Podcasts can be downloaded from our website and can be viewed on personal computers, many mobile phones and other portable devices. For the hairdresser it’s like having a one-on-one class with Kevin himself. But we don’t stop at teaching the hairdressers, we also encourage them to teach each other and share ideas. We encourage them to make their own podcasts and treat the site as a forum for learning and creative expression. Anyone is eligible to upload podcasts onto the site, all they need is a digital video recorder and their imagination and ideas. When working on photographic shoots, great shine is the best hair accessory you can have. I was disappointed with using

outdated, heavy, oily, silicone based products as after time it made hair too floppy and difficult to work with. I experimented with

hair spray and loved the shine that I got from it, but I also needed a texturiser that was fine enough to add body to the hair and

was invisible, so I looked at an old fashioned setting lotion. We took out all the fluorocarbons and hydrocarbons and in its place

added Lavender Hydrosol (lavender water). I wanted this product to be gentle but strong enough to control fly away hair.

ANTI.GRAVITY THE STORY

I never really liked serums for the hair - I felt like they made the hair too heavy. Instead, I had been experimenting with skin care

serums because I felt they were lighter. I was looking for hydration, not an oil slick! The skin hydrator worked up to a point but

was not gutsy enough. Models’ hair gets really bashed around and I needed something that protected it from the heat as well as

put back some elasticity to the hair. So I went back to the lab and used a ton of Hydrolysed Silk and vegetarian squaline for

shine, and vitamins for repair and protection.

I was looking to create a weightless ‘serum like’ product that added moisture but had no residue. I blended all these ingredients

and nine Essential Oils (for their anti-oxidant properties). The result was a weightless absorbing cream that hydrated the hair

without residue and it also meant that I could apply it during the course of the day without fear of the ‘5pm oil slick’.

This product was developed by accident on a beach in Malaysia during a shoot for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. I had

been experimenting with the salt, sun and sand concept that made everyone’s hair look amazing. On the beach, my hair gel had

been washed up by a wave with the makeup artist’s eye shadow. The salt water and eye shadow had contaminated my hair

product but time was running out so I had to apply the product to the model anyway. Amazingly the powder from the eye

shadow made the gel dry faster and I got the result I needed.

With this product we have drawn from the wonders of nature to create the latest in cosmetic technology. Back at the lab we

blended sea minerals (for the salt), eye shadow (for the sand) with a quick drying agent (for the sun). The result is a product that

gives you “the beach in a jar” with all the elements necessary to give you a great look. The beauty of this product is that it trans-

forms all hair types. Apply to dry hair and scrunch for about 30 seconds.

HAIR.RESORT THE STORY

I wanted to create a product that didn’t make hair oily or flat: but still defined the hair weightlessly I wanted fine hair to look just

as glamorous on the beach as it does on the dance floor. The idea came to me when watching people dance on the beach after

being out all night. While they were still out from the night before, I was up at the crack of dawn at a fashion shoot...Working! I

wondered if while their hairstyles were being kept in place, was it being protected from the harmful UV rays? UV rays and per-

manent hair colour are not friends. This product is a styling lotion that contains sunscreen. It is moist and fast drying and can be

used to achieve a Raquel Welch, 1 million years BC look; very sexy, like a movie star on their day off. I needed a curl enhancer

that gave a natural result without crunch and weight but had some guts to it best applied as a finishing product to dry hair.

Recently there have been some really interesting developments in the beauty industry regarding thickeners and now we have

found a way to make the hair feel thicker than it really is! We now have the technology to adhere very tiny Rayon fibers made

from fabric directly onto the hair. These tiny fibers stick onto the Keratin fibers of the hair and actually thicken the hair shaft; the

result is fine hair that acts thick. The fibers are completely water-soluble and you don't get any build up. Essentially this product

is for fine hair. Since there is a slight amount of moisture in the product, it is beneficial to coloured or damaged hair to make it

feel thick with a smooth texture. Its great for bulking up the hair with a weightless feel.

As a person with curly, frizzy hair I have always been looking for the perfect product to control frizz naturally. At school we were

always taught that hair and skin are made from the same thing (keratin), and that they react to treatments in the same way. I

started experimenting with skin care products in the hair. Moisturisers for the skin seemed to give the hair a softer look, so I went

to the ab and added Vitamins A, E, B8, B3, H, F and Calcium; all of which are great for the skin. I then added a setting lotion and

I was doing lots of fashion shows that required big disheveled hair. Big, dramatic hair takes up a fair bit of your time, and time is

something that you may not always have. I needed an instant hair-do in a jar. I wanted a medium holding product that was

moist, yet dry (if you know what I mean?). A product that derived its moisture from water not oil so it could be used to create

dramatic hold and texture on all hair types, including fine hair. STICKY.BUSINESS contains molecules that work on movement.

Once you stop repositioning the hair it sets. STICKY.BUSINESS will go hard and soft repeatedly, getting you down the catwalk

with 15 costume changes and still looking fabulous enough to hit the disco. Use a hair dryer to dry STICKY.BUSINESS in to

create a big thatched look.

I created SUPER.GOO because I needed a product that gave the hair a chunky, separated look. Traditionally, gels were used but

they became flaky or oily and left the hair crunchy. SUPER.GOO is flexible but still has a firm hold with a rubber-like, natural finish

that gives it a “certain bounce”. Unlike a paste, SUPER.GOO is not dry. SUPER.GOO was achieved with extracts of Green Tea,

Bamboo and Nettle and can be used to mould the hair into shapes. It is especially good for both slick looks and looks that

require a strong hold with separation. SUPER.GOO has a unique rubber-like texture, therefore it has the ability to last throughout

the entire day without going droopy or loosing the style or shape of your look.

I made UN.DRESSED for those who like to have a “no product feel” and who want more thickness in their hair with a softer more

natural matte finish. Originally I intended this product to be just for boys, but when I was testing it I discovered that women

loved it because it gave their hair thickness and added texture. They also loved the fact that they could have touchable hair but

still get a gutsy separated look. The texture of the product and the weightless flexibility makes it add thickness and a matte

texture without any greasy feeling. It’s for that day old, lived in look, without the dirt.

In the world of session styling I’m always looking for new ways to change the models hair. Wild crazy colour became the new hot

Because I work with longer hair and texture has become so important these days I needed a product that I could build into the

hair. I found that I needed spray-in products mainly because they are so easy to apply! Using different delivery systems can

make all the difference when applying a product. Gels are great for short hair, but if your hair is fine or long you can get a bit

stuck with a gel. HAIR.RESORT.SPRAY came from a need to get the job done fast, I felt like I needed a fine mist so the product

felt a part of the hair. HAIR. RESORT.SPRAY is part foundation and part finishing product. You can apply it to damp hair to build

TEXTURE.MASTER is not so much about what we have put in the product, it is what we have left out that makes this product

unique. TEXTURE.MASTER was born from a love of hair spray and the texture that you get from using aerosol spray over the

course of a day. I always loved the hair’s texture at the end of a days shooting, but I have a dislike of the Fluorocarbons,

Hydrocarbons and other propellants that normally accompany aerosol sprays. TEXTURE.MASTER contains an unusually high

amount of molding resins, which gives the extreme holding power in the product. The delivery system of TEXTURE.MASTER is

high-density pump that mimics the spray one would normally only get in from an aerosol but in fact it is not an aerosol. I chose

to make the can out of aluminum to ensure that it is fully recyclable. Sometimes it’s what you omit from a product that makes i

better, and with TEXTURE.MASTER it’s what we left out, that makes it so great.

YOUNG.AGAIN.RINSE has been formulated to lock down the cuticle and lock in moisture. We found that the main problem of

ageing hair is the hair’s cuticle, its outer layer, because it gets roughed up. This makes it prone to absorb water and release

moisture, resulting in frizziness and brittleness. Drawing in water (not moisture) makes the hair prone to faded colour and

limpness because the cuticle opens and closes rapidly. Also, there is less lipid production so the scalp and hair become dryer.

YOUNG.AGAIN contains a very powerful antioxidant called Immortelle. Myth has it that Ulysses travelled to the island of Corsica

found the oil of Immortelle and anointed himself with it and became a demigod. It was thought that Immortelle was the elixir of

the gods as it was known for its ability to fight the ravages of time. Naturally I became interested in this oil, as it was the original

anti-ageing ingredient. I knew that French aroma therapists had studied this oil and found it had extraordinary healing qualities

and great regenerating ability, by stimulating new cell growth. Shiny hair is every Woman’s dream, because of this I looked at the

effectiveness of skin serums and light- weight oils that were being used in high-end skincare. There have been some really

interesting recent developments in cosmetic research when it comes to oil. New research has found that oils actually absorb

better into the hair and skin than lotions. Skincare specialists looked to hair care to find ingredients that sealed in moisture and

removed the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and they refined those ingredients to be more weightless and water-soluble. I

took these ingredients back and adapted them into YOUNG.AGAIN. One of the main reasons I needed this product was

because every process in hairdressing (mainly colour work) is an oxidising process. This ages the hair, so I needed antioxidants

to stop the hair from oxidising or prematurely ageing. I wanted an oil that could protect and strengthen the hair. I used

ingredients like Bur Oil to improve hair strength and add shine, Safflower Seed Oil to give a soft smooth appearance and finally I

added Apple and Sugar Cane extracts to gently exfoliate the hair and give the surface of the hair a smoother cleaner appear-

ance. YOUNG.AGAIN also contains UV protectors and is a heat protector for the hair up to 220oC, which is 428oF. You apply

YOUNG.AGAIN to freshly washed hair and before any styling products are used. Once dried you can apply a small amount to

Phospholipids Phospholipids are comprised of two types of fatty acid. This puts them in the lipid family, a broad group of naturally occurring molecules, which includes fats and fat-soluble Vitamins (such as Vitamins A, D, E and K). FAQ’S1. What ingredients do we use to strengthen the hair? We often refer to hair as being “stressed” what are we referring to and what ingredients are used to repair “stressed” hair? How is stressed hair different than chemically damaged hair? We use many ingredients to strengthen the hair; from Amino Acids to Proteins, and often combinations of botanicals and natural plant derivatives. Stressed hair is a great marketing word. Technically, hair doesn’t get stressed out, but we do! The term “stressed hair” refers to hair that has been undergoing a lot of friction or excessive chemical services. Hair that is continually being blow dried, flat ironed or incorrectly colour treated, can become stressed, which means that if it’s not looked after, the stress will become full blown damage. Some of our products address the “stressed” issues to help prevent potential damage.

2. We list Glycerin in some of our products. It has been taught that Glycerin strips colour. What purpose does the Glycerin serve and is it colour safe? Glycerin is a wonderful lubricant and moisturiser. It helps to keep the hair soft and pliable. If used at the correct levels and formulated by the right chemists, glycerin is completely colour safe. Remember, anything used incorrectly can be harmful, damaging or colour stripping.

3. What do we use instead of sulphates? Sodium Laureth or Lauryl Sulfates are SYNTHETIC cleansing agents that are of small molecular sizes. They are capable of penetrating the skin, which can increase the occurrence of skin irritation whilst stripping the hair from its colour. They have recently come under investigation as possible cancer or environmental concerns. AT KEVIN MURPHY, WE DO NOT USE SULFATE SURFACTANTS IN ANY OF OUR PRODUCTS. SULFATE FREE surfactants are a larger molecule than sulfates, therefore they have less ability to penetrate into the skin and so they are less irritant. Also, because of their larger molecular quality, they help to keep the hair from depleting its colour. Plus they add great shine and lustre. Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate is derived from coconut and palm oils; it's a safe, skin friendly surfactant (foaming agent) for both skin and hair. This mild plant derived surfactant creates a rich, luxurious lather that effectively removes the surface oil, dirt and bacteria, without stripping or drying sensitive skin. Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate is also

hydrophilic; this means it is attracted to water, which enables it to dissolve more readily in water, thus providing superior rinse-ability. Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate is derived from palm kernel and sugar; it's a safe, skin friendly cleanser for both skin and hair that effectively removes surface oil, dirt and bacteria, without stripping or drying the hair or sensitive skin. Sodium cocoamphoacetate is a naturally derived foaming ingredient used to provide glide for a smooth feel. Often used in shaving creams for their amazing “gliding” effect. Sodium cocoyl glutamate is derived from coconut oil and glutamate amino acid; it cleanses, protects and repairs. Sodium cocoyl isethionate is derived from coconut fatty acids; it's a mild, non-drying cleanser, a wonderful sudsing agent, with thick, creamy, rich bubbles. Sodium cocoyl sarcosinate is derived from coconut oil; it's a safe, skin-friendly cleanser for both skin and hair that effectively removes surface oil, dirt and bacteria, without stripping or drying sensitive skin.AT KEVIN.MURPHY, WE DO NOT USE SULPHATES.

4. What are parabens, and what do we use if not parabens? Parabens are generally used as preservatives and for micro protection. In the past, parabens (of many kinds) have been the main ingredients to prevent products from growing mould, bacteria or yeast. This is very important, because without this protection, your products could become a health hazard. In recent years, parabens have become a negative word, as they have been linked to possible cancer and environmental issues. Even though these claims are very debatable, many reputable companies who care about these issues have been diligently working to replace parabens with safe and (if possible) natural ones that are paraben free. It has not been easy, as each product must be independently “micro challenged”, and may require a different combination of preservatives to keep its integrity while safeguarding the consumer and the environment. At KEVIN.MURPHY, we use a variety of different preservatives, and in a variety of different combinations, each having their own (long winded) legal names. Wherever possible we try to use natural preservatives. We always ensure that they are safe and environmentally responsible and do not contain parabens. The health of our customers and their clients are our main concern, along with the perfect integrity of each product and its performance.

FAQ’S5. Are KEVIN.MURPHY products pH balanced? All KEVIN.MURPHY products are acid balanced with a pH mantle range between 4.5 - 6.5. Even though each product does have a standard pH, every formula when made is given a range for manufacturing. For example, if the LUXURY.RINSE has a pH of 5.5, then its range will probably be between 5.0 & 6.0.

6. Are KEVIN.MURPHY products silicone free? We do not use old types of silicones that tend to leave a heavy residual on the hair or make it feel limp, greasy, or dirty. However, newer technology has developed Multi-Function Silicones that are often attached to a protein or amino acid. These types of silicones are virtually weightless and are used in many expensive skin crèmes to help remove wrinkles and slow the aging of skin. We have found some amazing benefits to these types of ingredients that help slow down the aging and damage to the hair. These ingredients are not greasy and do not build up in the hair and they are easily shampooed and rinsed off with any KEVIN.MURPHY wash. Therefore, you may occasionally see some of these types of silicones in our products.

7. Do KEVIN.MURPHY products contain sunscreen? Yes, to protect the hair and the product from any damage that can be caused by UV rays. All KEVIN.MURPHY products contain sunscreens.

8. Do the sunscreens have a SPF? Legally we are not allowed to state an actual SPF number on hair, as hair cannot regenerate itself like skin. We use many different types of sunscreens in our products, however one of the more common names you will see on the list is Octylmethoxycinnamate, which is one of the best and is often used in high-end sunscreen products. Sunscreen not only protects the hair but also the colour and integrity of the product and packaging.

9. What is molecular weight? Molecular weight determines the molecular size of an ingredient. It is usually measured in “Daltons”. An example would be: 150m/w, would mean 150 Daltons.

10. What is meant by keratin based? “Keratin Based” means that the base of the ingredient or product is made up of Keratin amino acids or Proteins.

11. Styling Products: The suggested amount to use. Many times we are shown that you “can use” half a bottle of ANTI.GRAVITY on a client. Recently while working with Kevin, he spoke about using smaller amounts for lighter hold and larger amounts for stronger hold. Can this be spoken about in the manual? No, because if Kevin gets results with a small drop, someone else may prefer half a bottle. Individuality is the key. Trial and error, if it works for you, then that was the correct amount to use. If it was too heavy, then you probably used too much, if it wasn’t enough, then...well you know the rest of this story.

12. Why isn’t the Masque considered a “reconstructor”? Does it not reach the Medulla? Whether we call it a reconstructor or not, it is really a play on words. The masque along with the boosters are extremely powerful and contain a full combination of all the amino acids and proteins. The medulla is the central part of the hair, made up of large loosely connected cells, which contain Keratin . Sometimes the medulla is not continuous in a hair, which creates air spaces that determine the sheen and colour tones of the hair.

13. What is the Keratin Base? HKP also know as Human Hair Keratin Protein, is derived from the clippings and cuttings of human hair. No humans are harmed during this process.

14. Why are the first 2 ingredients water and alcohol in the Masque and why are there 3 total alcohols in the Masque? Water is needed to solubilize the ingredients. We only use deionized/purified water. If the product did not contain water we would not be able to make it into a crème or any other kind of base. The alcohols that you see on the ingredient labeling are not the kind that you drink, nor the drying type of alcohol that is often used in products like hairsprays, etc. These are “fatty alcohols” which are high moisturisers like Cetyl alcohol or Cetearyl alcohol, these are amazing hydrating ingredients that add life, shine and moisture to the hair.

Keratin Amino Acids Keratin Protein molecules have been broken down and are small enough to go beyond the cuticle and penetrate the hair shaft through this process. Phospholipids Phospholipids are comprised of two types of fatty acid. This puts them in the lipid family, a broad group of naturally occurring molecules, which includes fats and fat-soluble Vitamins (such as Vitamins A, D, E and K). The main biological functions of lipids include a complex protective barrier. Phospholipids retain their structure when applied and because of this are sometimes called a “second skin”. Studies have found that phospholipids are carriers or transdermal delivery systems that can help other ingredients penetrate. While creating a skin-like barrier to lock in moisture, phospholipids have an antioxidant effect when combined with Vitamin E.
