TECH PORTRAITVIZUALTECH AUTOMOTIVEAs a “grand finale” to our Humber College GDPW specialized Illustrator stud-ies, this last assignment was to test our understanding of all Illustrator’s ca-pabilities as we were asked to create a realistic vector drawing of an actual hardware object or small appliance. We were expected to use layers efficiently to organize a complex drawing; choose the most suitable of Illustrator’s many tools and features for creating realistic shading, contours, and surface tex-tures; and experiment with filters, effects and warps.

Our assignment was to create a realistic vector drawing in Illustrator of an actual hardware object (screw, door-latch, etc.), or small appliance (camera, curling iron, toaster, etc.) suitable for use as a graphic in the packaging or advertising for the object. I chose to draw the Dleithium, a prototype electric sports car.

Then, use the realistic drawing as the foundation for a second line-art version of the image (white fills, black lines only). This drawing would be suitable for an instruction manual. And finally, use one or both of your drawings (realistic and line art) in a layout for an advertisement to sell the object.

This assignment was very challenging and a lot of work, but also very reward-ing! I certainly could have spent many more hours on it and further fine tuned the detail. Did I mention that it was a LOT of work?

SELF PORTRAITHUMBER GDPW PROGRAMThis was another assignment for the Humber College GDPW program. It re-quired creating many different shapes using a variety of methods (pen tool, shape builder, compound paths etc.) and setting their fill and opacity levels in just the right way as to produce a realistic representation of oneself. Certainly not easy!

It was a great way to get to know the pen tool and many of the other tools in Illustrator intimately. As someone who aspires to be an illustrator perhaps with a leaning to caricature, this was an intriguing project and opened up the thought process to exploring many directions from this point. In the end, even though there were many more other things I thought could be added to improve the piece, I was pleased with the end result.

CORPORATE BRANDINGADVANTI BICYCLESFor this assignment we had to design the logo as well as several corporate identity print pieces: business cards, letterhead, business envelopes, and a presentation folder. Except for the preliminary pencil sketches, all our designs were to be completed using Illustrator. The resulting logo was to be appropri-ate for use in a full range of advertising applications: business stationery, bro-chures, catalogues, signage, website, billboards, etc.

We were required to create 10 logo ideas as pencil sketches to start. As is of-ten the case when brainstorming, a number of the ideas are not strong, but not editing the creative process is important, so it is bound to happen! Peer review then narrowed the choices to 2 or 3 final designs. We then proceed-ed to render those in Illustrator and design the stationary pieces and craft an overall corporate identity.

The company I was assigned, was modeled on a high end Canadian bicycle manufacturer. They manufacture elite high tech racing bikes and focus on precision and quality. Although the ‘real’ company’s image was more angular and technical looking, I wanted to give a sense of the speed and flow of rac-ing, in the suggestion of a bike made of a long swoosh suggesting the wheels with a seat and handlebars atop. I intended to contrast this with an strong sol-id typeface to suggest the stability and strength of the product.

MAGAZINE LAYOUTTRICYCLE MAGAZINEFor our Humber College GDPW InDesign II program, we were required to de-velop a magazine with a minimum of 28 pages and no defined maximum. The magazine could be one that exists or was made up, but most importantly, it had to make sense. We were required to research our magazine and complete a magazine analysis, moodboard, appropriate sketches, and mockups. The project was to contain a cover, ads, credits, table of contents, letter from the editor and a list of contributors. It was also to contain a minimum of 5 arti-cles, use high resolution imagery and have a minimum of three ads that we created.

For my magazine, I chose Tricycle, the Buddhist Review. This magazine is fo-cused on Buddhist thought, practice and culture. It features contributors among the leading teachers in the field of Buddhist psychology. My project was modeled off the existing style guide of the magazine and conformed to the page dimensions according to the tricycle media kit. The final page count was 32 pages. This project was a lot of work, but a great learning experience.

PACKAGE DESIGN - CDCONCORD JAZZ QUINTETFor our Humber GDPW Composite 2 assignment we were to create the art-work/design for a CD package. I chose to make my CD package an eco-wallet fold out, as the lessening of the environmental impact of packaging is some-thing I feel strongly about. There is a style of album cover that focuses on im-ages featuring urban street life. Often showing images of city streets (with or without the artist) and commonly highlighting the grittier underbelly of urban life.

I wanted to capture a feel along these lines for the CD cover. I chose a scene of an alleyway in Chicago as the main image. I did very little tweaking of the image aside from fading it over a shadow colour on the right side to allow for the text which would appear on the back cover. I also added the spray painted graffiti title to the back of the van. The over exposed look of the original image exactly captured the feel I wanted. The logo was laid over the image and used a pin light blend of 150% to achieve the look it has.

The image used for the inside spread is a beautiful photo by Michelle Watt of Smalls’ Jazz club in New York City. I overlaid it with a blurred and blended capture of the cover colours. The font used here and on the cover is Coolveti-ca and appears in three main colours which were sampled from the highlight, mid-tone and shadows of the cover image. The disc itself just used the cover image faded to a cover shadow colour with the song titles in the same Cool-vetica font.

PRINT DESIGNLINDT SELL SHEETThis Humber College GDPW assignment was to design a sell sheet incorporat-ing the use of a table. In most aspects, a brochure and a sell sheet have many similarities. Both are great marketing tools to present a company or a prod-uct. Typically they are used in support of your sales efforts, provided at busi-ness conventions and exhibitions or presented to potential consumers. They are mostly printed in 8.5x 11 format. Sell sheets are rarely folded as well the information presented is usually more technical and in depth.

I chose Lindt Creation chocolate line as the focus. The current Creation prod-uct line has 6 chocolate bars, so I chose a table that would show the bars horizontally and the weight, description and barcode for each vertically. The challenge in this case was, with this many items on the page, to do too much creatively with the table layout. In the end I opted to keep it simple.

DIGITAL PUBLISHINGTRICYCLE MAGAZINEIn our Humber College GDPW Digital Publishin course, we were required to adapt our magazine layout to a digital publishing format. We could choose from a variety of devices suitable to accommodate ditial publishing formats, such as tablets and mobile devices. We also had to include both portait and landscape orientations. I chose to do both orientations for the Apple iPad.

After reformatting the existing layout to the new device dimensions and cor-recting any typography anomalies, we had to introduce new interactive ele-ments to the publication, such as video streams or links, galleries links to web content etc. Lastly we needed to create a legend to explain to the user how the interactive elements appeared and were used.
