Kern River Valley Hiking Club issues new 2011 scheduleKern River Courier

http://www.lakeisabella.net/hiking/

The Kern Valley Hiking Club was started in 1987 byBill and Ruby Jenkins of Kernville to help peopleexplore the splendor of the Southern Sierras and topromote and assist in trail development and mainte-nance. The group is nonpolitical and nonaffiliated. Mostof the hikes are taken from the books "Exploring theSouthern Sierra" (which are updated versions of "Self-propelled in the Southern Sierras", written by their son,Jim Jenkins when he was in his 20s. Jim was killed byan erratic driver in 1979. Ruby took on the job of keep-ing the information as accurate as possible, hiking thearea and making notes until her death in October 2007.Bill recently moved to Thousand Oaks, Calif. to be nearfamily.)

Each hike is rated for its difficulty, and each sched-uled event is subject to change, depending on weather, snowpack, etc. It is your responsibility to become awareof any changes by accessing the Yahoo group site or theWeb site listed at the beginning of this article and call-ing a club member.

The club’s semi-monthly hikes are usually onSaturdays. You need not complete hikes, but always tellsomeone that you are turning back. Bring lunch and 2+quarts of water. Sandals are not recommended.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The week continuesto encourage the forming of new personal relation-ships and the shoring up of those that might be weak-ening. New contacts also dominate.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) While the boldBovine might want to move quickly to deal with sud-den plan changes, it might be best to wait until youcan come up with some solid facts behind the unex-pected turn of events.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It's a good week toconsider how you'll move on matters both personaland professional. In either case, the more you knowabout them, the more likely it is that you'll make theright decisions.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Although you mightfind more colleagues ready to support your plans, some of them could ask for changes you don'tapprove of. Be ready to defend your position.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) This is a good time forLeos and Leonas to think about opportunities thatmight be outside your usual interests. You could besurprised to find something worth considering.

makes contact.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A friend's

unexpected work-related news could be a wake-upcall to get you to reassess your position.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21)Don't be put off by a lukewarm response to a recenteffort. Perhaps you didn't present a strong enoughargument. Rebuild your case with more facts, and tryagain. Good luck.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A sur-prise development in the early part of the week couldbe linked to an ongoing situation.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Yoursensitive side helps you work through an emotional-ly difficult situation with a minimum of bruised feel-ings all around.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) While theweek still favors new pursuits, some things from thepast also make a claim for your attention. The week-end is open for good times with some of the peopleclosest to you.

Guess what came today? Anofficial notice from PublishersClearing House! It said thatinside this offi-cial envelopewas an officialdocument thatsays my officialnumbers arethere in the offi-cial office andneed only to beofficially drawn! Then I win amillion dollars ayear for the rest of my life.

I noticed that the envelopesays "Do not discard." Well, ofcourse I won't do that! Not witha million dollars sitting therewaiting for me to send in mynumbered entry. They say that Idon't even have to buy anything.(But they hint that I would beconsidered a cheapskate bysending only the confirmationsheet and numbers and notordering something.)

Also, I no longer have to buyjust books. They have otherthings, like an enhanced mousepad, which does all kinds ofcyber things for the computer. And if I consider its $12 cost toomuch, I can send in payments of$3 for the next 4 months.

I am all a-twitter, because theyare telling me that they won'tjust send me the million dollars, they will come out to my house, ring my doorbell and hand memy first check personally. (I don'thave a doorbell, but today I wentto Archie’s Hardware and

bought one and will get itinstalled tomorrow.)

I am also looking forward tothe look on the face of my bankperson when I tell her I have anaccount there and could she casha check for me. She'll say yesand then I'll hand her theClearing House check for a mil-lion dollars and tell her I want itin fives and tens ... no singles. When she's able to talk, I'llrelent and tell her that she candeposit it in my account (whichcurrently has about $1.37 in it.)

There is lots of other stuff inthe envelope. I can play cashbingo, or order adult DVDs (I'mtold they come in a discreetpackage!) The whole contestmakes me giddy with anticipa-tion.

I did notice some fine print onthe back of the entry that says:"This contest closes on February15th of the year 2015 and theodds of winning are estimated tobe One Billion, 215 million, 500thousand." That's more entriesthan there are people living inthe U.S. Where are they going toput all the return paper? Nodoubt they have a really big stor-age shed!

But I'm not worried. Theenvelope says the winning num-ber is in the office waiting formy entry.

Too bad about the other 1.3billion entries. They don't have achance!

News from Whiskey FlatKern River Courier

Dagnab it, we wish folkswouldn’t say “Whiskey Flats.”Whiskey Flat Days is an annualcelebrashun in Kernville aboutwhen the place was calledWhiskey Flat, not Whiskey Flats.Anyone who keeps sayin’ Flatsbelongs in the hoosegow.

Ennyways, the big four-dayWhiskey Flat Days blowout isPresidents Day weekend, Feb.18-21 this year. That’s wheneverybody puts on their Westernduds and straps on their Colt.45s and pretends it’s the 1860sall over again. The 1860s waswhen Kernville was calledWhiskey Flat, from 1860 to 1864– that’s when they changed thename of the town, kinda down-playin’ the whiskey part.

Rotgut is what them gold min-ers wanted after a long day attheir claims or workin’ in the BigBlue Mine, something to slaketheir thirst. Well, the Old Westtradition carries on even if thelaw nowadays doesn’t exactlyallow for bein’ falling-downdrunk in the streets.

One of the biggest thingsabout Whiskey Flat Days is theHonorary Mayor’s race. That’swhen some good-natured localfolks sign up to make somemoney for charities (and for theKernville Chamber ofCommerce, of course, so’s theycan put on the big festivitiesevery year.) This year there aretwo teams of people running forthe office (it takes more than one

person to steal a high-falutin’office these days). They are, in noparticular order: One Team-“Mercantile Frank” Vargas andhis wife Sheila, who is runningas “Millinery Dolly;” and AnotherTeam - “Whitewater (Lucien)Whitman” and “Mean RiverGene” Hacker.

Join in on some of the greatevents the candidates are puttingon (see the box on page 3 for alist). There’s a lot of hilaritygoing on – and fund raising forsome great causes.

The Grand Marshal has beennamed for the 2011 Whiskey FlatDays parade. In keeping with theparade’s theme, “Going to theDogs,” he is Fred “Bud” May, ani-mal control officer for Kern County.According to the Kernville Chamberof Commerce, riding with himmight be Kimberly Mullins, Special

Projects Manager for Kern CountyAnimal Control. Plans are still beingworked out.

Animal population control is ahuge problem not only here in theKern River Valley, but everywhere.May said they would try to have ani-mals on the float, and maybe theycould get some of them adopted. Headded that he was very honored tobe named Grand Marshal for thisyear’s parade.

Here’s a humorous entry in last year’s Whiskey Flat Days Parade, a major high-light of the Old West festival held in Kernville each Februrary. Other features area carnival, an Honorary Mayor contest, street dancing and more. Over 50,000 vis-itors are expected this year.
