The US Forest Service motto is, "Caring for the Land, and Serving the People." To accomplish this motto, the FS has been given authority to regulate the flow of goods and services from National Forests. To remove any- thing of value from the National Forests will require some kind of per- mit or authorization. This is the only way the Forest Service can manage your National Forests for healthy, sustainable ecosystems and provide the natural beauty for which they are known. The Forest Service needs your help in caring for the land. It is impor- tant for each of us to understand how to be good stewards of the National Forests. Two issues have been brought to our attention in the Kern River Valley. First, despite extraordi- nary efforts of Kern Valley residents to participate in organized trash cleanups, the trash on National Forests is a growing prob- lem. Some purposely dump trash on the forest. Please be mindful to "pack it in, and pack it out," and let us know instances when this does not occur. Second, some natural resources must be pro- tected from any removal: endangered species and historic artifacts fall into this category. Removing natural or archaeological resources from the National Forests without authorization vio- lates federal law and is punishable by both fine and imprisonment. The FS prefers to educate people, but at times the fines and imprisonment are necessary. Before engaging in any activity that will disturb archaeo- logical resources or remove natural resources from public land, please ask if an authorization is needed or available. Please check with a local FS office if you have ques- tions. District Ranger Jeff Ulrich asks the public to please contact the FS whenever they see any- one dumping trash, spray-painting rocks, tak- ing artifacts, or any other illegal activity on the National Forest; but please do not confront them yourselves. By leaving history where it lies and taking trash with us when we leave public lands, we can substantially contribute to maintaining our National Forests for all to enjoy. Tips of abuse or misuse of FS land in the Kern River Ranger District can be phoned into one of the local offices at 760-376- 3781 or 760-379-5646 (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday). The "Contact Us" link on the Forest webpage fs.usda.gov/sequoia/ can also be used to leave any tips of abuse or misuse. Southern Califoria Edison Courier Release Southern California Edison wants customers to enjoy Valentine's Day, but would like them to keep in mind that metallic balloons can easily float away into power lines causing short-circuits and outages. That's because helium-filled metallic balloons, often given as gifts during this special day, can float into power lines and cause outages that could last from a few minutes to hours at a time. In the last several years, SCE has expe- rienced close to 2,000 power outages caused by balloons. In 2012, there were 583 balloon-related outages, with a 110 percent increase in outages in February compared to January. The number of out- ages in 2012 was the highest since 2007. SCE recommends some simple safety tips for handling metallic balloons: Keep metallic bal- loons indoors, and never release them outside. Metallic balloons can drift and come in contact with high- voltage lines and cause power out- ages, so be sure to attach a weight heavy enough to pre- vent them from float- ing away. If you buy and fill your own balloons with helium, be sure to tie them securely to a weight. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon or any foreign object tangled in power lines. Instead, call SCE at 800-611-1911 and report the prob- lem. More information on metallic balloon safety can be found at sce.com/metal- licballoons. At last I had a pet. I namedthe turtle Myrtle because itrhymed with turtle and becausemy grandma on my mom’s sidewas named Myrtle. I don't thinkshe ever found out that I nameda turtle after her. She probablywouldn’t have appreciated it.

I found a little box and placedsand in it and a small wateringdish. I also bought a box ofdried flies which was Myrtle’sfavorite food. I kept her on thefront porch of our mountainhome and each evening I wouldbring her in, out of the cold air.

Then one winter night I for-got to bringMyrtle inside. Ileft her on theporchovernight. When I cameout next morn-ing, Myrtle was

dead. Frozen like a popsicle. Icried and had a fit, knowingthat I was a murderer by neglectof my only pet.

Nonna said we could have asmall funeral and gave me a lit-tle box to put Myrtle in. Thenshe opened a window andplayed a gospel song on thepiano that I could hear as I duga tiny grave and buried Myrtle. Iput a little cross on the site andprobably said a prayer. I wasn’tsure about turtles having anafterlife, but I was sure that ifthey did Myrtle would be there.

It was years before I gotanother pet but that’s anotherstory for another time.

Those of youwho’ve readsome of my pre-vious columnsmay rememberthat early on, myparents divorcedand I went to livewith my dad’sfolks in Big BearLake.

In essence, Iwas raised by my father’s momand dad, who I called Nonnaand Dodda. They wereobviously rais-ing me, a tod-dler, a littlelate in theirlife.

There werecertain restrictions I followedwhile living with them. One ofwhich was “no pets.” So a dogwas out of the question. But Iwould keep asking and theywould keep saying “no.”

Then one fall day, while wewere shopping at the local dimestore, there on a small tablewere a number of little turtles.(Remember when you could buya little three-inch turtle with apainted shell? Well that’s whatthese were.) I asked if I couldhave one as a pet, and afterpromises of care and feedingand tearful pleading, I wasallowed to pay 50 cents for aturtle with a painted blue shell.

Then Moses said, ‘I pray You, show

me Your glory!’ - Exodus 33:18

In Greekmythology, we aretold of KingSisyphus, whowas given the end-less task of rollinga huge boulder upa steep mountain, only to have it rollback down Over and again in amaddening cycle, this task was tried, and always with the same result.Just as the King was nearing the pin-nacle, the boulder would slip fromhis grasp and hurtle to the bottom ofthe mountain where it awaited hisnext attempt. If this seems reminis-cent of life as it is lived out from timeto time, then we can picture our-selves next to King Sisyphus as weattempt to shoulder a load of life cir-cumstance that is endlessly unwillingto cooperate with our desires.

Little doubt Sisyphus deserved hiseternal sentence of continued futility, but as soon as we make this judg-ment, we are faced with our owndesperate need for grace as a resultof falling short of the call to Divineperfection. What precedes theabove recorded cry of Moses’ heartfound in Exodus 33 is the dreadfulnarrative of Israel at Mount Sinai

fashioning the golden calf as a substi-tute object of their worship. Comingdown from the mountain, Moses’heart was so grieved over what hesaw as the people bowed downbefore this idol, he respondedunthinkably by destroying the stonetablets containing the 10Commandments.

These tablets contained the path-way to sinless perfection and restoredrelationship with the Holy God, andthe writing they contained was etchedby the very finger of God. PerhapsMoses came face to face with theunderstanding that humanity wouldforever be chasing these command-ments around in a futile quest for per-fection much like King Sisyphus’ futileattempt to accomplish his given task.

Moses cried out in this circum-stance: “Show me Your glory.” Not:“Help us be better,” or “Let us tryharder,” but a prayer that went to thecrux of the problem/solution wherethe human condition is concerned:“We need you!” Herein lies theanswer to the quandary contained inlife’s very essence: the undeniableneed to reflect the image of ourHeavenly Father’s perfection, anchored to our complete and utterinability to see it come to pass in anyway shape or form.

Indeed, this heart’s cry of Moseswas a foreshadowing of the unfoldingof salvation’s plan in the coming ofour Lord Jesus to be the visible imageof the Father, and in His coming therestoration of relationship betweenthe human and Divine.

There is goodnews for all of youwho have beenwaiting for thetrout bite.

My best infor-mation is the troutare finally hungry. What’s different iswhere they arebeing caught. Withthe lake being solow the trout arebeing caughtbetween themain boat launchand all along themain dam.

Those whohave been fishing this part of the lakehave been getting reeling in their lim-its. If the trout follow the same pro-gram as the crappie it will be like play-ing whack-a-mole. They’ll bite one dayin the morning and not bite at all thenext day then the bite will be in theafternoon the day after that.

I have noticed that most of the fish-ermen in boats have been fishing fromEngineers Point to the main boatlaunch and the main dam. Most likelythey are fishing in the main channel. That’s where the shad are congregatingdue to fact that’s where the water is thedeepest.

If you fish the Upper Kern, let meremind you that Whiskey Flats Days isjust a few days away. The hatchery usu-ally stocks a very healthy load of troutin Kernville for the occasion. This yearshould be no different. Thanks, hatch-

ery guys! Let’s not get

complacent withthe nice weatherwe’re having. There is more win-ter coming, so takeadvantage and fish

on the good days. We can always dowhat we have to do on the bad days.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Argo” (R) — During the Iran

hostage crisis of 1979, 52 Americanswere taken captive, but six managedto avoid capture. CIA operative TonyMendez (Ben Affleck) has to devise ascheme to rescue the six survivorshiding in the Canadian embassy. Theplan: pretend Mendez is a Holly-wood producer and the civilians area movie crew scouting locations fora science-fiction movie. It’s a truestory too weird to doubt, even forthe Iranian revolutionaries.

“Argo” has won a ton of awardsand honors, including Oscar nomi-nations for everything from editingto Best Picture. Affleck directed themovie, and gave it a ’70s feel that is awelcome change of pace from con-temporary thrillers. It’s an intriguingnarrative with peeks into Americanforeign policy and the big-headed-ness of Hollywood.

“Anna Karenina” (R) — Basedon the story by Russian author LeoTolstoy, this adaptation takes a loveaffair and injects a new level of lushromanticism. Anna (Keira Knightley)is married to an frigid but well-seat-ed government official (Jude Law) inSt. Petersburg. She travels toMoscow to settle a dispute, andfinds herself in a quandary of her

own when shefalls for a youngarmy officer(Aaron Taylor-Johnson.)

It’s such a satu-rated and elegantviewing experi-ence that thescreen practicallydrips. The dramaand the passion isunderscored bytheatrical settings

and visual flourishes. Whether ornot the actual story pulls you independs on your vulnerability tostar-crossed lovers in elaborate cos-tumes.

“Undefeated” (PG-13) — Thisdocumentary follows the strugglesof a Memphis high-school footballteam. In 2009, the Manassas Tigerswere on a 110-year losing streak.Bill Courtney is a volunteer coachwith the drive to take beaten-downteam to their first win in a playoffgame. It’s moving to see a grownman spout sports cliches when youknow he truly means them. Whilethe coach is the focal point of thestory, the film really sinks in becauseyou get to feel for the players -- realinner-city kids hungry for a taste ofsuccess.

Many employ-ees in the KernRiver Valley willbe opening theirmail this week totheir IRS W-2form. Employersare required todistribute them byFeb. 15, whilemany follow theolder rule for Jan.31.

When you open your W-2 form, itreports the income you earned, aswell as thedeductionstaken out forvarious taxesand Medicare. This year, thereis new informa-tion never hav-ing been required before. The “box12” on the standard W-2 with a twoletter code, DD. The box shows the“cost of employer sponsored healthcoverage.” Employers who file lessthan 250 W-2s are currently exemptfrom this requirement, but thoseworking for larger organizations arein for a shock, when they see thatfor many, the employer is spendingas much as $16,000 or more for eachworker’s insurance. Most peoplewho have company paid benefits

have no idea of the cost. This isgenerally reflected in the wagespeople receive. You can’t pay outthese benefits and still pay out thehighest wages possible.

The Kaiser Family Foundation isa research-oriented organizationthat studies health care and insur-ance-related research. They havefound that the annual premium forindividual employees is $5,615 forsingle coverage, and $15,745 forfamily coverage. Costs have risenover the past five years about 25 to30 percent.

California has some of the lowestrates in the country. While there isno taxation to the employee for this

benefit, and it isa deductiblebenefit to theemployer, oneneeds to won-der. This is thesingle largestbreak in the tax

code, amounting to about $1,809 bil-lion a year in lost revenue toWashington.

So, the next time you see yourboss, give him/her a big thank you. This is a great benefit.

Mortgage inter-est rates haveremained very lowfor the last year orso. Late last yearthey hit their all-time lows at slightlymore than threepercent for a 30-year fixed ratenote. They are notmuch higher thanthat now.

Now is a great time to refinanceyour existing mortgage to takeadvantage of this trend. Most econ-omists are expecting the economy tostabilize in the short term and startto grow in the near future at a slowbut steady rate. With that growthwill come a corresponding rise ininterest rates, a slow but steadyreturn to around a five percent. Ofcourse this is all guesswork to a cer-tain extent because you can look atall the data you want to and nobodycan predict the future. However ifthe trends and estimates hold true, rates will start to climb a bit laterthis year.

There are still many mortgagesthat are currently “under water,”meaning they are more than whatthe home is currently worth intoday’s market. If you are not in thatsituation and you have equity inyour home, then seriously thinkabout a rate reduction refinance. You will save big bucks. Many

lenders are even doing them withreduced closing costs and somebanks with none at all.

If you do find yourself in the situ-ation that many of us are in rightnow and your mortgage is morethan your home’s current value, there are a couple of options. One issomething called HARP, which is afederal program that can help youre-finance to reduce your existingprincipal and avoid foreclosure or aShort Sale. Another option is anFHA Short-Refinance. This is a greatoption for those who do not havethe greatest credit. If you qualify, theFHA will refinance your home downto the home’s current market valueand get you a better interest rate atthe same time.

Not all homeowners qualify forthese programs but if you are cur-rently debt loaded in your home, now is a great time to refinance. Arefinance does not affect your prop-erty taxes and if you are looking tosave money on interest, they are agreat way to go. Better yet, if youare in danger of losing your home, arefinance may just save the day foryou and enable you to stay in yourexisting residence despite havingfinancial difficulty.

All of our tax dollars collectivelyare paying for these opportunities;take advantage of them if you can.
