A bear entered her home through a porch screen after having rummaged through her trash. Luckily, Mrs. Washburn was not there to meet the bear in person. According to Tahoe Wild Bears .Org, the only species of bears in California and Nevada are black bears. However, they do range in color from blonde to black, with cinnamon brown being the most common color in both states. Black bears normally avoid humans. If encountered, always leave them an escape route. Bears that are accustomed to people can become too bold and lose their fear of humans. To avoid this behavior, do not let bears become use to human sources of food. Tahoe Wild Bears .Org also has some suggestions for bear-proofing your home. June Washburn wants everyone to follow these suggestions. Bears are attracted to anything that is edible or that they associ- ate with food. Take precautions by imple- menting the following ideas: 1. Garbage problems can be solved with the purchase and correct use of a bear- proof garbage container. Save money by sharing one with a neighbor. 2. Wait to put trash out until collection day. 3. Don't leave trash, groceries, or animal feed in your car. 4. Keep garbage cans clean and deodorize them with bleach or ammonia. 5. Harvest fruit off trees as soon as it is ripe, and promptly collect fruit that falls. 6. Only provide bird feeders outside dur- ing November through March and always hang feeders so they are inaccessible to bears. 7. Keep barbecue grills clean. 8. Keep pets inside. 9. Securely block access to potential hibernation sites such as crawl spaces under decks and buildings. 10. Don't leave any scented products out- side, even non-food items such as suntan lotion, insect repellant, soap or candles. 11. Keep doors and windows closed and locked. Scents can lure bears inside. Drowning in irresponsibilityMichael BatelaanKern River Courier Publisher

The Kern River. She has manynames: The Powerful, TheMighty, TheBeautiful andThe KillerKern. Herwaters bringlife and shecan take lifeaway. She'sthe source ofour recre-ation, com-merce, and asource ofstrength and hope. She gener-ates and provides power andquenches our thirst. But areported killer she is not.

It's nother faultthat as tem-peraturesrise shebecomesmore andmore attractive as a source forcooling off, although certainBakersfield media report her ashaving a killer mindset.

She can take a life so veryquickly. First you place yourtoes into her waters, then yourankles, calves, knees and thighs. That's is all it takes! You haveentered her waist high and liter-ally you’re now in over yourhead and another life has

slipped away. Yours! If the Kern's cool waters were

not intoxicating enough, manyoften add a mix of alcohol andthen throw away all commonsense by refusing to wear a lifesaving floatation device.

I can't imagine setting out ona family vacation with the delib-erate intent of leaving one ormore family members behind, not to return, but this also con-tinues to be the case.

We have posted signs thatshout out the dire warnings to"stay out and stay alive", theycry out for the 257 lives lostsince 1967, yet this season wehave already added more than14 more lives to the count. Ourbrochures state "high water,

high risk',but peoplestill play agame of'rushingroulette' andattempt sui-cide by

entering the rapids.Does this tragedy have to

continue to happen? What morereasonable responsibility as acommunity can we take in orderto reduce or prevent any moreloss?

CORRECTION: It was recentlyreported in this column (as well asmany other entertainment columns)that Mariska Hargitaywould be in only 13episodes of this comingseason's "Law and Order:SVU." Well, I am happy toamend that report withnews from the Big Guyhimself: Showrunner andexecutive producerWarren Leight contactedme to dispel the rumor. Hetold me: "Mariska will bein all 22 'SVU' episodesthis season. Rumor she isleaving at 13 just wrong." WithChristopher Meloni's DetectiveStabler leaving, it's a relief to learnMariska's Detective Benson will besticking around.

Q: It seems like every otheryear, there is a rumor that"Jurassic Park 4" is going tomade. But so far, no movie. Willit ever happen? -- Paul G., Miami

A: All signs point to "yes."Producer/director Steven Spielbergtold a crowd of enthusiastic sci-fi fansat last month's San Diego Comic-Con fan convention that there will beanother "Jurassic Park," and it mightbe only two to three years away.Steven said that he has a story and ascreenwriter ready to go for thefourth movie of the dinosaur-clone

series, and Steven himself will serveas producer.

Q: I really love MTV's newteen comedy, "Awkward." Theactor who plays Matty looks

really familiar. Can youtell me what else I mighthave seen him in recent-ly? -- Cara D., via e-mail

A: Beau Mirchoff, 21,plays Matty, the nice-guyjock with a heart -- and itappears he also has a thingfor our heroine, Jenna. Youmight remember Beau from"Heartland," or from histurn as Drea de Matteo'sson on "DesperateHousewives."

Of his year on "DH," Beau toldme: "I learned so much from all thepeople on that set. They are pros, andthey know what they're doing.

Playing a teen on "Awkward" hasBeau remembering his own awk-ward time in high school:"Everything seems like such a diresituation. Like it's the last time you'llbe able to do something. Or it's theend of the world if you can't go outwith that girl. But it's really not, andit's so insignificant looking back.

Pifcks of The Week"Jane Eyre" (PG-13) --

A young woman inVictorian England, plainin appearance, leaves atroubled past behindand finds herself in theemploy of a charmingand complicated man. It's another in a longseries of adaptations ofCharlotte Bronte's novel, andthis one stands out among therest.

The pace of the film is handledwith care, but keeps in mind thatmotion pictures just don't havetime like novels do. The story hasquite a few twists and turns asthe tides change for the protago-nist, yet the film still takes thenecessary time to get every dropout of the astounding sceneryand the smoldering performanc-es of Mia Wasikowska andMichael Fassbender.

"That's What I Am" (PG) --This coming-of-age dramedy setin mid-'60s America tacklesissues of tolerance, determina-tion and principles. The story fol-

lows the trials of Andy, a fairlytypical 12-year-old boy, as hesets his sights on his first crush. When wise, compassionateeighth-grade teacher, Mr. Simon

(Ed Harris) pairs Andywith the class reject -- alanky, awkward red-haired boy called "Big-G," lessons are learnedall around.

It's a touching familymovie that is nothingshort of a full-on sur-prise from WorldWrestlingEntertainmentProductions. You may

recognize a wrestler trying on adramatic role, and holding it upwell enough. But Harris does thereal heavy lifting, as he putseven-handed wisdom in a suplexand breaks a chair over the headof adolescent issues.

The number of hummingbirdsmay be down again this year due toa late cold spring, but spirits are fly-ing high for this years event.

Learn about hummingbirds asthe numbers rebound in time for thefestival. Many staff and volunteershave put together this free eventwith its many workshops.

The amazing corps of volunteersare to thank for filling the feedersevery day: Birdie Foster, Gordon &Chris Hancock, Maria Garcia,Martine Metzenheim, Bob Showers,Cloe Kennedy, Darrell Barnes andMarya Miller, and Gerry Tessman.

Hummingbird numbers increasesteadily at the Kern River Preservehummingbird feeders from Juneuntil late-August.

Black-chinned Hummingbirdnumbers decline throughoutAugust. Allen's and Rufous num-bers peak the third week of August.

Six hummingbird species arepossible at the Kern River Preservefeeders in July, August, & earlySeptember with over one thousandhummingbirds present some days:Black-chinned (numbers decreasefrom July through earlySeptember), Anna's, Costa's (lownumbers), Calliope (rarely), Rufous(peak numbers in late August &early September), and Allen's (virtu-ally impossible to separate from

Rufous, even adult males, except dur-ing banding sessions).

Costa's and Calliope are morenumerous at feeders in the desert(Costa's) and montane (Calliope)regions of the Kern River Valleywatershed. Allen's pass through insmall numbers the latter third of Junethrough the middle of August. TheKern River Valley has less than fiverecords each of Broad-billed andBroad-tailed Hummingbirds.

A few weeks ago I decided toagain plant tomatoes -- even afterrememberingabout last year'sbumper cropwhich I could notgive more thanhalf of away.

I'd tried every-thing, even leavinga bag of them onstrangers' porch-es, ringing thedoorbell andscampering into the darkness. (Youhave to be careful when you do that;people have and use shotguns uphere.)

We canned tomatoes, madetomato paste, made salsa, fried them, stewed them, ate scads of tomatoand lettuce sandwiches and still theykept growing. My big mistake wasbuying eight plants (well, they werevery small) and guessing on what theper acre bushel count would be.They grew like weeds and eventuallycovered the steps to my garage.

We lost friends because of ourinsistence in giving them severalbags of the red fruit. After the har-vest was over and the last tomatowas gone I swore I would neverplant again.

Well, time is a great healer andwhen the season rolled around thisyear, I felt that if I kept tomato plantsto a minimum I could grow enough

for us and a few of the friends wehad left. And so I did.

I went to a local nursery andpicked four sturdy looking plants, which I estimated would give lessthan half of what I grew last year. Iplanted them and they began togrow. And grow, and grow. I startedto panic -- would this year be arepeat of last year's fiasco?

If the size of the growing plants(huge) had anything to do with thenumber of tomatoes I was going tohave, I was prepared to leave theValley.

Well, I need not have worried. Theplants were gigantic but only a fewblossoms are visible. Now I am wor-rying that I will have but a puny fewfor just the family. To date, the bush-es are over 5 feet high and growing.I have added fertilizer, kept themwatered, played music from an iPodand have even talked to them. Butmy tomato crop is a bust.

Nearby neighbors are breathingsighs of relief as it has becomeapparent that I will not be leavingmidnight offerings at theirdoorsteps. Peace has descended intothe neighborhood and folks are onceagain talking to us.

Although, as I am writing this Ihave noticed a bunch of new blos-soms. Do you suppose...?

Many Americans have chosen topurchase "High Deductible HealthInsurance Plans" (HDHP) in an effortto keep their monthly premium coststo a minimum. These plans areunique in that theydo not cover anymedical or prescrip-tion costs until thedeductible has beensatisfied. Once thedeductible has beenmet, then the insur-ance plan pays apercentage of thebills ranging from about 70% all theway up to covering 100% of allowablecharges when using participatingphysicians.

The deductibles and out of pocketmaximums the insurance companiesmay charge are regulated by the IRSand vary depending on the plan pur-chased as well as the insurance com-pany offering the plans.

After working a lifetime, it is sad tosee that one major medical issue, either accident or natural, can wipeout a lifetime of retirement savings orthe prospects of paying for a highereducation.

To encourage these types of finan-cial vehicles, the Federal governmenthas a law in which people can setaside in a separate bank savingsaccount, monies to assist in meetingthe "high" deductible of these typepolicies. They are known as "HealthSavings Accounts" or "HSA" for short.

Each insurance company typically

has a bank they are affiliated with tofacilitate the account, or the consumermay establish an HSA account withany other financial institution offeringthese accounts. Also, the interestpaid on the accounts is very low andmany banks do charge a small mainte-nance fee. On the positive side, eachHSA deposit made into the account istreated as a medical expense by theIRS, making the contributions to yoursavings account tax deductible.

Each year the IRS establishes amaximum contribution allowed to beplaced into these accounts. Manyhigh income wage earners will maxi-mize these as an additional way totuck away dollars from taxation.

The Internal Revenue Service hasjust announced the HSA Limit 2012inflation adjusted deduction limita-tions for annual contributions made toan HSA. The notice makes changes to:Annual contribution limitations forsingle and family coverage; andchanges for maximum out-of-pocketemployee expense for single and fami-ly coverage under a high deductiblehealth plan.

For individual and families withever tightening budgets, the HSA is agreat way to lower the monthly pre-miums, while still protecting yourselffrom a catastrophic medical issue.

By the time the first coveredwagons rolled West, the legend ofblack mountain man JamesBeckwourth was already largerthan life.Beckwourthwas the son ofAmericanRevolutionaryWar veteranSir JenningsBeckwith anda mulattoslave. Around1810, SirBeckwith moved his family andslaves to Louisiana Territory, nearSt. Louis. In 1812 James wasapprenticed to a blacksmith, butaround 1817, he ran away tobecome a professional hunter.

In 1822, he joined a popularrush to the Fever River leadmines. After amassing a fortune of$700 in 18 months, he went home.In the summer of 1824, he saw thefamous ad placed by GeneralWilliam Ashley, and his life waspermanently changed.

Beckwourth was hired to per-form a variety of tasks for theRocky Mountain Fur Company, including blacksmith and assistantto Ashley.

At the rendezvous of 1828, trap-per Caleb Greenwood played apractical joke. He told Crow ChiefBig Bowl that Jim was his missingchild who had been stolen by theCheyennes and raised by thewhites. The mother of the long-

lost son appeared, searching for adistinguishing mark. Beckwourthstood motionless as the womanspotted a mole over his left eye,and whooped with delight.

Welcomed into the family withall honors, the rugged mountainman received clothes and hischoice of three beautiful sisters fora bride.

For six years, Jim Beckwourthwas a Crow living in the Montanalands they called Absaroka, all thewhile drawing checks from theAmerican Fur Co. He took sevenwives during that time and rose inthe ranks of the tribe to become awar chief.

John C. Fremont wrote aboutencountering Beckwourth in 1842.In 1849, during the Mexican War,Beckwourth carried messages forGen. Stephen Kearny.

Beckwourth joined the Crowfor a hunting party in 1866. Henever returned. Some accountssay he simply became ill; otherssuggest he probably died of foodpoisoning after a feast of dog. Hisbody was placed in a tree. Hisspirit was remembered as that ofa great warrior.

For years, Beckwourth’s legacywas that of “a gaudy liar.” ThoughBeckwourth surely embellished attimes, historians now think therewas more truth to his adventuresthan was originally believed.
