Page 4: Keppel · A warm welcome… Mr Ong Kim Pong, Regional CEO Southeast Asia, Business Region, PSA International, will succeed Mr Ng Chee Keong as Deputy Chairman with effect from November

We would like to say farewell to Mr Fock Siew Wah and Mr Ng Chee Keong, who are stepping down with effect from Nov 1, 2017 as Chairman and Deputy Chairman respectively.

Since Chairman Fock Siew Wah’s appointment in November 2005, the Club has been able to scale new heights. In 2006, Mr Fock officiated at the opening of the Club’s expanded facilities, including a new annexe building that houses the new gymnasium, a dance studio, a spacious boardwalk offering al

fresco dining, a children’s play area, function rooms and a rooftop dining area, a maintenance workshop, as well as a multi-storey carpark. In 2013, he also officiated at the opening of the newly renovated Tee Top Golfers’ Terrace. Additionally, his personal interest in giving back in the community has enabled the Club’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts to evolve to become more inclusive, with both management and staff galvanised towards activities that benefit the local community and environment. As such, the annual Keppel Charity Golf has managed to cross the $1-million mark in funds raised in the last four consecutive years, and numerous accolades were awarded to the Club by authorities such as NEA and PUB for its green efforts. The Club’s future has also been of primary concern to Mr Fock. Following the government’s announcement on Feb 14, 2014 that it would not be extending the land lease of Keppel Club, he met principal members and government agencies to discuss the Club’s future. Since then, the Club has not stopped exploring alternative solutions.

With appreciation…

Deputy Chairman Ng Chee Keong was appointed in September 2002. He has been supportive of the Management Committee’s initiatives, particularly when they pertain to the redevelopment as well as future development of the Club. In 2003, the Club was able to embark on a major golf course upgrading project that

completed in the following year, with then Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong officiating at the opening. Mr Ng ensures that the Club’s policies and initiatives are consistently carried out and aligned with the Club’s direction, even in the face of challenges and changes. He is also pivotal in helping to shape the CSR culture of the Club. He is in fact a long-serving Management Committee member, having first served as Captain from 1990 to 2002. During his 13 years of captaincy, he made significant changes and improvements to the golf course, including the introduction of night golfing in 1992, the first golf club in Singapore to do so, the redevelopment of the humble driving range into a modern two-tier building and the introduction of the monocart system in 1996 to address the issue of dwindling caddies.

Mr Tan Chong Meng, Group CEO of PSA International, will succeed Mr Fock Siew Wah as Chairman with effect from November 1. Mr Tan also heads the Senior Management Council of the PSA Group. He leads in both strategy and execution of the Group and is responsible for its overall performance.

28th Singapore Open Senior Amateur Championship

Keppel Club impresses on and off the course

The 28th Singapore Open Senior Amateur Championship (SOSAC) is one of Singapore’s prestigious golf tournaments for seniors, and Keppel Club was proud to play host this year on our fairways. Participants from all around the world made their way here from Sept 19 to 22, and it promised to be an exciting event for everyone involved.

For our ground staff, the week started incredibly early as they had to ensure that the fairways and greens were properly maintained in accordance to the tournament standard. It was a challenging week for both golfers and staff alike due to the unfavourable weather conditions, but everything fell into place nicely due to the tireless efforts of our team. Ms Tan Swan Too, Chief Referee for the SOSAC, had nothing but praise for the overall efficiency and professionalism displayed.

“Krishnan understood my requirements clearly and his team marked the course with great attention to details and made changes very promptly when required,” Ms Tan said of our Senior Golf Maintenance Executive.

“The marshals were very proactive especially with the monitoring of the Pace of Play, [and the] medical situation was handled personally and promptly by Izan with minimal disruption to the tournament,” she continued, commending Senior Golf Executive, Mr Muhammad Izan, and our golf marshals for a job well done.

As the final day rolled by, participants gathered in Keppel Hall for a refreshing feast to mark the end of this tournament. After a few words by SGA Tournament Sub-Committee Chairman Lee Lian Hong, the prize presentation commenced. Aside from the senior competitors, this is also the first time the evergreen lady golfers were included in the tournament, and they certainly enjoyed the event and festivities.

It was a proud moment for several of our members as they emerged top of their division. Our Men’s Team made up of

Mr Steven Tee and Mr Chua Teck Chin took the Best Nett while Ms Kim Sagadeva won Overall Best Nett in the Evergreen division. Mr Chua also emerged as the Best Nett winner of Age Group C (65 to 69 years), while Mr Choo Choon Huat and Mr Dave Goh took Best Nett and Best Gross for Age Group B (60 to 64 years) respectively. Mr Willie Ong triumphed over the rest as the Overall Best Nett winner.

The overall winners for the Ladies and Men were Ms Gillian Sim from Tanah Merah Country Club and defending champion Mr Christopher Chee from the US. Both golfers played outstandingly to clinch the Overall Best Gross titles for their respective divisions, and gave brief but heart-warming speeches about their wins.

Congratulations to all the winners in this event!

Wales, it seems, is little known to quite a number of people. Not just Singaporeans, but also people from other countries around the world.

A friend asked me when he heard I was leaving for Wales at the end of August: “Where on earth is Wales?” “Yeah, where is Wales?” queried another! “Isn’t it in England?”

“No,” I replied, “it’s in Britain.” It looks like my friends have

forgotten their history and geography lessons. In Singapore, Wales is not talked about much and thought of as a holiday destination. Thus, it has been largely forgotten.

Wales is a country in southwest Britain known for its legendary castles, mountainous national parks, distinctive Welsh language, Celtic culture and musical festivals. And its “face” is Cardiff, the capital city, which was in the spotlight recently when it hosted the UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventus in June. The country has a population of 3.1 million people, outnumbered three times by sheep.

Together with England and Scotland, Wales forms Britain and has a language of its own, a language totally foreign to us, the English-speaking, and we cannot make any sense out of it. Most of the people are bilingual, with the younger ones especially speaking more English.

Some of the names of streets, villages, towns and sites are “unpronounceable”. Take, for example, the towns of Betws-y-Coed and Llanllwhaiarn, the historic sites of Abaty Ystrad Fflur (an abbey) and Pentre Llifior (a chapel), and the pretty villages of LLanfairfechan and Cerrigydrudion.

And some names are extremely long. But this village takes the cake: It has the longest name in the world – Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogery-chwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Yes, that is the name of the village! I checked the spelling again and again and again to make sure I got it right. And I have photographic evidence of

The oft-forgotten land of Wales

it too. So how do you pronounce that? I will have to ask our tour guide, who had rattled it off effortlessly the other day to rounds of applause. Of course, he is Welsh.

Before I get lost in the word (again), I had better mention that the name means “The Church of Mary in the Hollow of the White Hazel near the Fierce Whirlpool and the Church of Tysilio by the Red Cave.” Another mouthful!

There is another interesting thing about Wales. It has the smallest house in the whole of Britain. The tiny red house, measuring 3.1 metres high by 1.8 metres wide, stands proudly in Conwy Quay in the northern part of Wales. It was the delight of the Missus, who turned to me and gushed: “This is a doll’s house for adults!”

Wales is serene and slow-moving with plenty of greenery. Lovely meadows and valleys are sheltered by mountains which are not very high, the highest being slightly above 1,000 metres. Trees, shrubs, wild flowers and wild berries line the narrow country roads.

Wales is largely an agriculture country. Sheep, cows and pigs add colour to the green countryside as you see them grazing or resting lazily in the meadows. The wool-white sheep

with black noses particularly stand out in the distance as they dot the green grass.

The villages and towns are small and quaint, and so are the restaurants, eateries and shops. During lunch time, finding a table, even for two, is a challenge. But nobody is in a hurry, everybody waits patiently for everybody. Everything is done at a leisurely pace. Clearly, it is a society without stress.

This little red house in Conwy Quay, Wales, is the smallest house in the whole of Britain.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, the name of this village, is displayed on the entrance of a shopping complex in the village centre.

How quickly time flies and I am truly happy to present to you the October issue of the newsletter, third month into my new, exciting job at Keppel Club.

Last month witnessed many events taking place, one of which was the Club’s hosting of the three-day Singapore Open Senior Amateur Championship from Sept 19 to 22. Not only did several of our Club members win in this prestigious tournament, our staff too received a letter of appreciation from the Chief Referee, Ms Tan Swan Too, for their efforts in making the important event a success.

Another key event last month was of course the President’s Trophy, held on Sept 23, which raised about $20,000 for charity. No one won the coveted hole-in-one Lexus car, but everyone had a good game and great fun at the dinner, which offered palatable food, lively music and a unique performance by our very sporting President Lai Mun Onn.

The generosity of our members shall continue to manifest this month, when we hold the highly anticipated Keppel Charity Golf on Oct 14 and 15. This year’s event will again see donations go to 10 beneficiaries, as well as the concerted efforts of all – members, guests, management and staff – to do their best for the community.

Please enjoy this issue of Keppel Links, and feel free to send us your feedback, if any, to: The Editor, Keppel Links, 10 Bukit Chermin Road, Singapore 109918, or via www.keppelclub.com.sg/Contact-Us--Feedback.

President’s Trophy 2017

A tournament to remember once moreIt didn’t matter that at the President’s Trophy on Sept 23, no one was able to win the hole-in-one Lexus car generously sponsored by Borneo Motors. Everyone had fun from a good game despite the afternoon heat.

In fact when President Lai Mun Onn addressed the eager participants at the buggy station, he had urged them to take up the challenge and play their best to drive the sponsored car away. Laughter erupted to that good-humoured call, after which buggies set off in an orderly fashion for the shotgun start at 1pm.

A participant having a ‘ringing’ go at Fun Hole 6.

The heat was bearable in part due to bottles of chilled 100 Plus made freely available to golfers to constantly hydrate and rejuvenate themselves. Additionally, Hole 6 offered a brief respite with a fun corner, at which participants paid for and tossed plastic rings at bottles lined on an elevated surface from about a metre away. Attractive prizes

were offered, depending on how many bottles they managed to ring.

The game ended at about 5.30pm, giving some time for participants to refresh and get ready for a rewarding dinner to come at Keppel Hall. Lively English pop songs from the 80s and 90s played in the background as guests tucked into scrumptious food and clinked

Emcee Yumiko Kayahara urging the guests for cash donations.

glasses. It was hard not to want to dance to the music.

As in previous years, the President’s Trophy sought to raise funds for the Keppel Charity Golf taking place in the following month. An auction was held again this year for this purpose, which saw guests with a big heart responding to the emcee’s call, bidding away bottles of fine alcohol and a large handwoven carpet.

In a bid to raise more funds for charity, guests were also urged to give cash donations for a chance to watch President Lai perform to the tune of the famous Gatsby commercial on stage. It was a highlight of the evening indeed, to have the President, accompanied by Captain C.S. Kong, Mr Ben Kwak and Mr Anthony Maniam, up on stage mimicking Japanese celebrity Kimura Takuya’s actions in the hair wax commercial. They were such a good sport that it was a moment hard to forget.

At the dinner, monthly medals were also given away, and a prize presentation to winners of the day’s tournament was the finale. The event raised about $20,000 in all, thanks to the support and contribution of sponsors, participants and staff. Let’s meet again in 2018 for another successful President’s Trophy!

Club Championship 2017

Keppel Junior Justin Kuk emerges winnerIn a titanic 36-hole match play final held on Aug 27, Keppel Junior Justin Kuk, 16, prevailed over Keppel veteran player Mr Joe Lai to win the much-coveted Keppel Club Championship 2017.

The road to the final was challenging for Justin, who had to navigate past two former club champions and a fellow Singapore Golf Association (SGA) Development Squad teammate to reach it.

Mr Lai, who had prevailed in a gritty match over another Keppel Junior Ben Yap in the semi-finals two and one the day before, was in initial good form with a two-over gross score over the first nine holes. He was only two-down after the first nine to Justin, who played the first nine at one-over.

In the second nine holes, Justin continued to build momentum with three birdies offset against one double bogie and managed to extend his lead to seven-up, with an even-par round, after the first 18 holes. After a short lunch break, the competitors resumed the match, which ended after 28 holes (10th hole of the second nine), with Justin winning 10 and eight.

Keppel Club Championship 2017 was played with a new format this year, using a combination of stroke play qualifying rounds to determine the top 16 who would subsequently play in the knockout match play rounds.

Justin’s first match in the round of 16 was against 2016’s Keppel Club Champion Mark Lin, and both were locked in a tight match with

Justin finally prevailing three and one. In the quarter-finals, Justin met another former Keppel Club Champion, Mr Anthony Maniam, and squeezed out a two-and-one win. In the semi-finals, he met fellow DS teammate, Andre Chong, and managed a one-up win although both were not playing their best.

Keppel Club has proven to

be a happy hunting ground for Justin as he is now concurrently the Keppel Club Champion, Keppel Junior Champion 2016 and Keppel Gold Medal Men’s Best Gross Champion 2016. At the prize award ceremony, he thanked the tournament organisers, the Green Committee and all his opponents for providing a memorable challenge and positive experience.

Keppel Links (KL) caught up with our young winner Justin Kuk (JK) to say a few words to our readers on his win.

KL: Congratulations on being the Club Champion, particularly at such a young age. How do you feel about your win? Did you prepare well for the game?JK: I am definitely happy to win. I guess the regular training sessions paid off. I train almost every day of the week, at Keppel Club, SGA and Singapore Sports School.

KL: Was it a challenging game today?JK: It was manageable. I told myself to keep calm, which is really important to last through hours of the game. There was a light shower which made the ground a little soggy, but the course was good and conducive to play.

KL: You are clearly an inspiration to our Keppel Juniors. Is there anything you want to say to them? Any tips to share? JK: What matters most is the process, being able to put in a lot of effort into training, consistently, with discipline and determination. I love golf too – in fact I started playing golf when I was four years old.

KL: Tell us what you enjoy doing in your free time, if you have free time that is, after the regular golf training.JK: I like to cook and attempt new dishes. I find it very interesting how changing the temperature, timing or ingredients can change the flavour of the dishes.

SGA Junior Golf Challenge 2017

Keppel Juniors shine yet again

Keppel Juniors Sean Lee and Jillian Kuk won top honours in their respective divisions in the recently concluded Singapore Golf Association (SGA) Junior Golf Challenge, which was held at Raffles Palm Course on Sept 4.

SGA organised its fifth Junior Golf Challenge this year to provide the opportunity for junior golfers to compete among one another and to identify new talent. This game was held over nine holes with the Division 2 juniors (11 years and under) playing on the easier first nine and in Stableford format, and the Division 1 (14 years and under) and selected low handicap Division 2 juniors playing on the harder back nine in Stroke Play format.

In Division 1 Boys, Keppel Junior and SGA Junior Squad (JS) member Sean Lee won first place (gross score 42) on the Raffles back nine. Sean was feted during the Golf Challenge dinner by Mrs Lyn Sen, SGA Executive Board member, for prevailing over Elite Squad and Singapore SEA Games player, Marc Ong, at the Singapore National Amateur Championships Match Play round (by now, we all know that he won the decisive point to give Singapore its first SEA Games gold medal in 28 years, as well as an individual SEA Games silver medal).

In Division 2 Girls (Stroke Play), Keppel Junior and JS member Jillian Kuk won first place (gross score 43), also on the Raffles back nine. It was an improvement on the 2nd runner-up position she

Jillian credited her win at Raffles to her older brother, fellow Keppel Junior and SGA Development Squad member Justin Kuk, for doubling as her caddy and helping her make the right course management decisions on the challenging Raffles back nine.

Keppel Charity Golf 2017

OUR BENEFICIARIESKeppel Charity Golf is an annual event at the club, held as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility programme. Here, we find out how our beneficiaries put the funds to use after last year’s event.

Assisi Hospice Assisi Hospice provides palliative care for patients and families that preserves their dignity and

quality of life. Patients of any race, faith and financial position are cared for by its team of doctors, nurses, allied health and pastoral care professionals. When faced with life limiting illnesses, its patients receive medical care, psychosocial, emotional and spiritual care.

Assisi Hospice provides care for patients across the continuum of home care, inpatient and day care. This allows patients and family members to journey with a clinical team they are familiar with, and to receive care in the way that they need.

The funds from 2016’s charity golf has helped the hospice to support the care of patients. For 2017, with the increase in patients’ intake, it will continue to use the funds for patient care.

down Syndrome Association Down Syndrome Association (Singapore) or known as DSA(S), was borne out of love and devotion by a group of parents of children

with Down syndrome. The Association was established in September 1996 and aims to support and educate families, professionals and the general public about the genetic condition.

A self-funding, non-profit organisation, DSA(S) works closely with health and educational professionals and other voluntary welfare organisations in support of persons with Down syndrome. It is officially recognised by the National Council of Social Service and registered as a charity organisation with the Commissioner of Charities, Singapore.

The funds received from Keppel Charity Golf 2016 was used to partially fund DSA(S)’ enrichment programmes, expanding the capacity of some of the enrichment classes such as Drums & Percussion and Speech & Drama, and also introducing new enrichment classes such as Aikido, Fun with Bricks and school holiday programmes.

dyslexia Association of Singapore The Dyslexia Association of Singapore (DAS) is a vibrant organisation serving the specialised educational needs of more than 3,200 students with learning

differences. DAS students range from five to 17 years old (pre-school to secondary school) and they come from diverse family and racial backgrounds. Currently, more than 50% of its students are from low-income families.

The funds from Keppel Charity Golf 2016 were channelled towards the general pool to help dyslexic children from lower-income families receive all the financial help they need to overcome their learning differences. In 2017, DAS has allocated the donation specifically for Speech and Language Therapy and its projected budget to support bursary students for this programme is S$178,000.

HEB-Ashram Halfway House

HEB-ASHRAM Halfway House was established by the Hindu Endowments Board in 1999. It is a registered IPC with effect from 1 Nov 2011 (UEN: T09CC0009L) and the only Indian-Hindu halfway house in Singapore that assists in the rehabilitation and reintegration of penal and drug offenders from the Indian-Hindu and other communities into society. To date, more than 900 residents and their families have benefited from our services.

In total, 36 residents and their families had benefitted from the financial support given by Keppel Club. Our core duties involve overseeing the rehabilitation of the residents through conducting various programmes and activities, we believe that horticulture is one of the components that has a rehabilitative element which will benefit our residents if properly managed. We had to invest in the purchase of garden equipment (tools),

fertilizers, seedlings, garden soil, irrigation system, water tanks and labour. Besides the above, HEB-Ashram Management Committee has placed great emphasis in the rehabilitation and reintegration of the residents so that they are able to lead a normal life after their release.

from and cope with an ailment, the fund also allowed 49 nurses, 12 doctors, four therapists and two medical social workers to work with these patients requiring long-term care and love. The donation from 2017 will be channelled towards supporting the same services.

Lembaga Biasiswa Kenangan Maulud Lembaga Biasiswa Kenangan Maulud (LBKM) has, with the support of the community, foundations and organisations, successfully disbursed a total of 27,000 bursaries, worth a total of $23 million, to students from primary to postgraduate levels, to date.

Funds received from Keppel Club last year were disbursed to part of the recipients, from all levels of education. LBKM will continue to disburse the funds received from this year’s event to more students in need to help them move up in the socioeconomic ladder.

LBKM strives to remain a relevant beacon of light in the community and believes that no child should be deprived of education because of financial constraints.

Muscular dystrophy Association (Singapore) (MdAS)

The mission of the Muscular Dystrophy Association Singapore (MDAS) is to maximise the quality

of life of people with muscular dystrophy and their families, and to integrate them into society whilst supporting research towards a cure. MDAS utilised funds from last year for several of its programmes to help improve the lives of those with muscular dystrophy. The framework of its programmes provides a learning continuum of life skills that aims to guide and nurture MDAS members with muscular dystrophy from childhood to adults.

MDAS has also created opportunities for members to be exposed to life skills training through various programmes ranging from mobility training to community and independent living. Through hands-on training, members learn life skills such as being responsible, decision-making, self-care and problem solving skills which resulted in

acquiring self-confidence and a sense of self-worth.

The donation from Keppel Charity Golf 2017 will continue to fund the above-mentioned programmes.

The Northlight School The Northlight School was established in March 2006 to better cater to students who could benefit from a more customised and vocational education. This was part of a broader effort to

identify and assist students who were at risk of leaving the education system prematurely after sitting for the PSLE. The school adopts an experiential approach in teaching and to prepare them for lifelong learning and employability.

Being a beneficiary of Keppel Club since 2010, the donations from Keppel Charity Fund have been and will continue to be channelled into the NLS BOG (Needy Students) Fund, in which the Interim Financial Assistance

Scheme (IFAS), Further FAS Breakfast Programme and Medical Expenses fall under. The school aims to create a living and learning community, and helps its students by providing free uniforms, transport allowances and meal subsidies at their canteen. It also ensures that their students receive a holistic education, with hands-on learning as well as experiences outside the classroom.

Society for the Aged Sick Society for the Aged Sick is a 404-bedded residential nursing home, serving the destitute and

aged sick. Majority of its residents are elderly who suffer from chronic illnesses such as dementia, stroke and cancer. They live at the nursing home and need constant round-the-clock care. Society for the Aged Sick provides services such as residential care, nursing care, medical care, rehabilitative sessions and volunteer programmes to meet the needs of its residents.

The amount $90,888 raised from Keppel Charity Golf 2016 was earmarked for the construction of the home’s upcoming annex building, which costs an estimated $4 million. The building will create storage and staff facilities (dormitories and recreational spaces) to support its 404-bed operations. With the added dormitories and recreational spaces, the home believes the welfare and morale of its staff will be improved, in turn translating into better care for its residents.

The donation from 2017 will fund the same annex building construction. The home has commenced the tender process for the new annex in August and the construction is projected to complete over 10 months starting from November 2017.

St Luke’s Hospital St Luke’s Hospital was the first hospital in Singapore dedicated to the elderly sick. It has since expanded its services beyond

the elderly to enrich more lives. An Institution of a Public Character, it has over 2,000 inpatient admissions and 2,000 outpatients each year, regardless of race, language or religion. As illnesses can be long and chronic, it cares holistically for patients’ physical, emotional and psychosocial well-being.

The funds raised through Keppel Charity Golf have enabled the hospital to continue to serve its patients and to serve more of them. In addition, it has been able to provide

new programmes and services such as dementia care, nursing care, palliative care, respite care, wound care, and the Patient-Turned-Volunteer programme. The donation to the hospital in 2017 will continue to support these purposes and more.

Volunteers needed to pace play

Golf is definitely a one-of-a-kind sport where one can take in the beautiful scenery while enjoying some banter with friends on a relaxing day. Nevertheless, playing at a leisurely pace can in fact be a little too slow for some.

Regardless of the diverse opinions among the golfing fraternity on what constitutes slow play, it is a truth universally acknowledged that it can detract from the enjoyment of the game.

As outlined in Keppel Club’s golf bye-laws, derived from the R&A Rules of Golf, pace of play is an essential part of the game to take note of in order to maintain good golfing etiquette. Everyone is on the course to have fun, and playing at a good pace is a big part of ensuring that everyone gets to have a pleasurable experience playing the game they know and love.

To uphold good golfing etiquette, the Club would like to invite members to come forward as volunteers alongside our marshalls, supporting them in gently reminding golfers who neglect to follow the timing for acceptable pace of play, as indicated in the table below.

Members interested to help take everyone’s golfing experience to the next level kindly contact Edmund Chun, Senior Manager, Golf and Golf Course, at [email protected].

Evergreen vs Roses 2017

A rosy outcome to an enjoyable game

Keppel Club’s yearly staple, the Evergreen vs Roses game, once again pitted our veteran lady golfers against their comparably youthful counterparts on Aug 25, 2017.

Despite the smaller than usual turnout, the game was just as fun as ever. The ladies still managed to enjoy themselves thoroughly on the course, thanks to the beautiful weather and wonderful company.

It was a hard-fought battle between both teams as they gave it their all. A friendly competition is still a competition after all, and winning was definitely on the back of the Evergreen team’s mind as it did not want a repeat of last year’s result where it narrowly lost out to the Roses.

After the winning pairs were announced at dinner, the final results were in. The Roses were triumphant once more and loud cheers rang out all around.

Congratulations and well done to the Roses for yet another victory! The Evergreen team will definitely be looking forward to a rematch next year.

The Roses team looking ecstatic after finding out that they had won again!

A look at our SEA Games results

Looking towards the future

After our promising SEA Games results in golf recently, we ask Green Committee member Mr Kuk Hun Yi to share his thoughts about our future potential in the sport.

Keppel Club: Our men’s team has done us proud, taking home gold and silver, while our ladies played valiantly in the face of stiff competition. Do you think their positive performance reflects the amount of support our local clubs and the Singapore Golf Association (SGA) have given to this new breed of golfers?Hun Yi: In my opinion, the ability of our Singapore Men’s Team, which culminated in the SEA Games Gold, results from a combination of each team member’s (and their families’) resolve, dedication and investment made to succeed, as well as support given by SGA, a National Sports Association (NSA), and local clubs.

However, if we wish to continue to produce champions and build a strong pipeline to succeed, we need to continue and increase support from government stakeholders like SGA, Sports Singapore, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) and Singapore Sports School, as well as clubs, and even tap into commercial corporate support and sponsorship (as what they have in Thailand and the Philippines), along with individual families providing support.

We need a strong golfing ecosystem to build golf champions.

KC: Do you think the SEA Games results will lead to greater support of the Singapore golfing scene? Why or why not?HY: The SEA Games gold will generate belief among Singapore golfers today and tomorrow that we can surmount the pinnacle to be the best in the region and internationally. For example, Gregory Foo, Singapore’s highest ranked amateur, is ranked among the top 100 in the world and definitely has the potential to be one of the best in the world.

The SGA is actively drumming up support for the next generation of golfers by creating a Junior Squad and sending them actively into local and international tournaments. I applaud SGA’s efforts for trying to build the pipeline from younger juniors and we in Keppel are trying to complement those efforts. For example, I understand the winds of change have begun with some schools rethinking their decision on whether to support golf, when they were previously closing their golf programme.

However, there may be other segments among the public or in clubs that may not embrace or support junior golf and we need to institute cultural change to have holistic support to bring future national and international success.

Community Youth Golf League 2017

Keppel Junior wins despite wrist injury

An injury to his right wrist earlier in the year did not stop Keppel Junior Cheang Kai Siong from winning at the three-round Community Youth Golf League 2017, which held its final leg on Sept 4. Keppel Links caught up with the 16-year-old.

Keppel Links (KL): You were awarded the Tay Cheng Khoon Eagle award for being the best overall performer and for displaying good attitude, progress and commitment to the sport. How do you feel about your win? Kai Siong (KS): I am thankful, as I had not been training consistently due to my preparation for my school’s preliminary examinations. KL: Were you confident from the beginning, or was it a challenging game?KS: I was confident, especially since I had a good start. However, I had to

constantly remind myself not to be complacent. To me, every game is a challenging one. As I become a more competitive player, I strive to pick up birdies instead of pars to compete against my best scores. KL: Has anyone been the inspiration behind your strong commitment to golf?KS: My parents, who tirelessly send me for tournaments and training, and accommodate my competition schedules despite their heavy workload. My older brother’s strong sense of integrity and commitment

to whatever he sets his mind to have inspired and shaped me into who I am today. My past and current coaches have also helped in moulding me into a golfer with resilience and patience.

KL: Any words of inspiration or encouragement to the rest of the Keppel Juniors? KS: Never give up on their goals and to always believe they can achieve what they set their mind to – more importantly, to find their own purpose and routine that identify with them as a golfer.

This year’s Annual Inter-Club Meet (Swimming) (AIMS) took place at Serangoon Gardens Country Club (SGCC) on Sep 3, 2017, and our swimmers did us proud as Keppel Club came in second overall.

The clubs that participated in AIMS this year were SGCC, Keppel Club, and Warren Golf & Country Club, and swimmers from each club swam their hearts out in this highly competitive event. Our boys and girls certainly enjoyed themselves and did their best, and many of them went home with respectable medal hauls, making this a memorable event for all.

Last month, House and Bar Convenor Derrick Lee gave Keppel Club’s F&B staff the lowdown on the proper service of alcohol.

Talk on service of alcohol

Keppel’s F&B staff get useful tips

Apart from the aim of moving the Club’s F&B service up another notch, the talk essentially informed the staff what the local authorities expect of alcohol sale licensees, among other important information.

With presentation slides and Chinese translation to aid the staff’s understanding, Mr Lee covered a few key points, including the constituents of alcohol, its effect on the individual, ways to identify intoxication and to intervene appropriately, as well as conditions and regulations governing the issuance of liquor licences.

Quizzed on his motivation for conducting the informative talk, Mr Lee explained: “We always strive to be a responsible club not only

to our members, but to our staff as well.

“Although staff intervention in cases of guests’ intoxication is more required of outside establishments than of a country club such as Keppel, our staff would still benefit from being aware of this along with the general obligations

The staff listening intently to Mr Lee’s presentation.

Knee problems for people aged 50 and above are not unusual, and can interfere with their sports, recreational and even daily activities. For this reason, Keppel Club invited Farrer Park Hospital to deliver a talk on Aug 23 about common knee problems plaguing this demographic.

Health Talk

Knee problems in active baby boomers

As many of our members are baby boomers, it was no wonder that the talk drew a good number of keen attendees. Through a slide presentation and detailed explanation, the speaker, orthopaedic surgeon Dr Bryan Tan, highlighted common knee conditions and their respective treatments.

Four main knee conditions in older patients were discussed –

By Kathy Neo

Patella Tendinitis, Bursitis, Meniscus injuries and Osteoarthritis – and Dr Tan explained each condition and its treatment. For instance, he mentioned that Meniscus injuries, which are possibly sports-related ”twisting” conditions, can be common among tennis and golf players, and that rest, ice and surgery are treatment options depending on the severity of the injuries.

The slide presentation ended with a Q&A session, in which Dr Tan answered several questions from the audience. Some of the questions sought advice on the type of sports and activities to avoid for existing knee conditions. Finally, President Lai Mun Onn presented a gift to Dr Tan as a token of appreciation for sharing his expert knowledge.

Mr Tang King Kai, a long-time Keppel member who attended the talk, said: “There is information overload on the Internet, and this talk pretty much helped to zoom in on what’s truly relevant. Of course, the Q&A allowed for specific questions to be addressed, which is good.”

and liabilities expected of liquor licensees.”

Tee Top Captain Ricky Tan, one among those who attended the talk, said: “Prior to this session, I had a vague idea of the topics shared. The more comprehensive information I am taking away today will surely help me in the area of alcohol service.”

Keppel Club Line Dance Fiesta, held on Sunday, Aug 27, was akin to one big birthday bash celebrating the nation’s 52nd birthday, no less.

Line Dance Fiesta 2017

Keppel Hall packed by huge turnout

Some 150 dancers comprising members and their guests attended the event, which had originally been scheduled to start from 2pm through to 6pm. However, to cater to many participants’ requests for a greater variety of dance routines to be enjoyed, the event was extended to start an hour earlier and end an hour later than intended.

At noon, participants began streaming into Keppel Hall, looking forward to an afternoon of high-octane dancing. No one was disappointed. Even when it was time to partake of the refreshments, it was non-stop dancing throughout.

Ms Michelle See, a member’s invited guest, said: “I normally go to the community clubs for line dancing, but this event is unique

for me as it is held at a country club. I like that for a reasonable entry fee there is food provided, tables and chairs at which we could sit down to rest, snack and chit-chat in between many hours of dancing.”

Indeed, the spread at the refreshment table was abundant and well-received. Additionally, the Club’s gracious gesture in sponsoring bottles of wine for the raffle draw was appreciated by all. Everyone cheered as they clinked wine glasses and forged new friendships. It seemed like a befitting toast to our nation’s birthday earlier in the month!

Mrs Verni Tan, Keppel Club member and planner of the event, said: “The response was tremendous, and we actually accepted more than the originally

intended number of participants. The dance floor was a little crowded as a result, but the participants enjoyed themselves nonetheless.

“The atmosphere was conducive given the right lighting and ballroom setting, the food was aplenty, and most importantly, the participants loved being able to strut their stuff with many other enthusiasts of the same dance. They are looking forward to the next Line Dance Fiesta!”

No wonder then, that encouraged by the huge turnout by the local line dancing fraternity, the organising committee is now mulling making the event a half-yearly affair instead of an annual one. Let us look forward to the event coming back soon!
