KENTON RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL the Cougar News Issue 4 Summer Edition Volume 23 Summer Government Explores Springfield and Beyond Mr. Monroe will take his summer American Government class to a variety of area civic and historic sites. Locally, the class will visit the Heritage Center, City Hall, the Juvenile Court, Municipal Court, Common Pleas Court, and the Public Safety Building. To learn more about Springfield history, the class will visit Ferncliff Cemetery, where many 19 th and early 20 th century civic leaders and entrepreneurs are buried. There will be a number of guest speakers ranging from elected officials to career advisers. Beyond Clark County, the class will visit the London Correctional Facility, the Ohio State House, and the Ohio Supreme Court. Students Receive Top Honors An amazing group of students spoke and were recognized as Valedictorians and Salutatorian at the 2012 Commencement Program, on Wednesday, May 30 at the HPER Center on the Wittenberg University campus at 8:00 p.m. The Valedictorians were Dylan Atkins, Brandon Casto, Hunter Clark, Anna Gebby, Madeline High, Kylie Meyer, Andrea Paul, and Haneen Salhieh. Dylan Atkins, son of Christie and Doug Atkins, will attend the University of Findlay and major in pharmacy. He has accepted a total of $14,000 from the University of Findlay and the KR Band Boosters, as well as the Debbie Lawrence Memorial Scholarship. Brandon Casto, son of Jerry and Cindy Casto, will attend The Ohio State University and major in music education/performance. He has accepted a total of $2050 in scholarships from The Ohio State University and the Western Ohio Bluegrass Association. The 2012-13 school year will bring a change in the district medication policy. At the beginning of the school year a form will be sent home which allows a parent to give permission for their child to be given the following medications:

• Acetaminophen (generic Tylenol), • Ibuprofen (generic Advil) • Cough drops • Tums

The nurse will have these medications in the clinic when needed.

Vernon Nazarene University and major in accounting. He has accepted a total of $12,000 in scholarships from Mount Vernon Nazarene University, and the Kenton Ridge Boosters. Anna Gebby, daughter of Andrew and Martha Gebby, will attend Urbana University and major in education. She has accepted scholarships totaling more than $20,000 from Urbana University. Madeline High, daughter of Bela and Amy High, has accepted a total of $17,000 from Xavier University and the Kenton Ridge Boosters.

Kylie Meyer, daughter of Scott and Vicki Meyer, will attend the University of Cincinnati and major in fine arts. She has accepted a $1000 scholarship from the University of Cincinnati. Andrea Paul, daughter of Robert and Angela Paul, has received a total of $5,500 from The Ohio State University and the Northridge Lion’s Club. Haneen Salhieh, daughter of Sabri and Nadera Salhieh, will attend The Ohio State University and major In pre-medicine. Our salutatorian candidate is Joseph Connor Kitchen, son of Joseph and Danessa Kitchen. He will attend The Ohio State University to major in biochemistry.

NOTE: All other medications, whether prescription or over the counter will still need the signatures of parent and health care provider on the form titled Parent Request and Authorization to Administer a Prescribed Medication/Drug or Treatment and Licensed Prescriber’s Statement on the back. These forms will also be available on nelsd.org under “district forms” & on KR’s homepage under “school forms.”

Honors & Advanced Students Gear Up for Summer Assignments

This summer, students taking Calculus, Physics, Advanced or Honors English 1-4 should enjoy the hot summer months by completing their summer assignments. All assignments are posted on KR’s homepage under “school links” and also under “Summer Assignments.” Don’t wait till August to start—summer will go by faster than you’ll expect!

SUMMER TENNIS:

The boys’ and girls’ tennis teams will hold a four-

day youth tennis clinic for youngsters entering

grades two through nine, June 25-28, from 9:30-

noon daily. High school students will demonstrate

basic tennis techniques.

Participants may download a flyer from KR’s

homepage under the “school forms” link, register

on the first day, or may call Mrs. Bennett, coach,

at 360-4680.

SPORTS PHYSICALS:

Physical Examinations will be given to all athletes

on Saturday, July 21, at the high school, from 8-11

a.m. The cost is $15.

13th ANNUAL GOLF SCRAMBLE:

The athletic boosters are sponsoring a golf

scramble on Saturday, June 23. The cost will be

$55 a person/$220 per team. Meet at the Locust

Hills Golf Course-the shotgun starts at 2 p.m.

Spring Sports Highlights

Tennis: The boys’ tennis team finished their season 16-2. The doubles team of Jacob Abshear and Jacob Glass, as well as Noah Icenhour and Luke Schlicher, went on to district competition. Baseball: The boys finished the season with an overall record of 17-11 and went 8-8 in the CBC. Softball: The girls had an awesome season, finishing the regular season 16-8 and went12-4 in the CBC.

Track: The boys’ and girls’ track teams sent thirteen athletes to regional competition this year. For the boys, District Champion Cody Ryan (long jump, 110 hurdles), Levi Dimichele (800 relay), Alex Parrish (800 relay), Ryan Shroyer (800 relay), Ben Perkins (800 relay), and Nick Lacey (800) represented the team. For the girls, District Champion Brooke Sizemore (high jump); Lindsey Drenik (1600 relay, 800 relay, 400 relay), Brittany Drenik (1600 relay, 800 relay, 400 relay), Haneen Salhieh (1600 relay, 800 relay, 200); Sara Thornton (1600 relay, 800 relay, 400 relay); Karrah Batten (400 relay); Erin Kitchen (3200) represented the team. Nick Lacey and Brooke Sizemore both placed 8th in their prospective competitions.

Competition Cheerleading Excels

The KR Competition Cheer Team had a fantastic season. They started the season sweeping the Clark County Fair Cheer Competition with a first place in every category, and continued the season with a first, second, or third at every competition. They finished the season placing fifth in the state of Ohio at the

Leo Club Serves the Community in Numerous Ways

This spring, the Leo Club sponsored the annual Sadie Hawkins dance, as well as the student Wiffleball tournament, with most of the proceeds going to Relay for Life, the national fund raising event for the American Cancer Society, as well as Pennies for Patients. Leo Club is always involved with improving the school environment. They volunteered this year to help in the Touch of Gold, as well as taking up collections to help several families that have suffered

tragedies this school year. Early this summer, Leo Club members will be painting faces for children attending the annual Lion’s Club Community Festival, May 31-June 3. The club has over 180 members and will be recruiting new members next fall. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the club’s creation. Mrs. Bennett is the adviser. The Leo Club is sponsored by the Northridge Lions Club.

At the annual Evening of Excellence Program, students are recognized for a wide variety of accomplishments: scholarships, grade point averages, perfect attendance, performance on standardized tests, etc. One of the most prestigious awards is the Golden Apple Achievement Award. Receiving this honor signifies that a student has been nominated by one or more teachers or staff members because of the student’s demonstrated qualities of leadership, academic achievement, and service at an exemplary level. Cougar Prowl: 5k Run to Benefit

Get your tennis shoes on! Introducing the first annual 5k Run/Walk, the Cougar Prowl. The race begins at 9 a.m. on August 11. The cost is $20 per person. Class of 2016 Invited to Freshman Orientation

On August 20, at 5:15 p.m., all incoming members of the Freshman class are invited to attend an orientation in the KR auditorium. After a brief welcoming meeting, students will be dismissed to go to their homeroom, to meet their homeroom teacher, get their schedules, and have a question and answer session with student

ambassadors. During this orientation, students can find their lockers, meet all their teachers at Open House, which starts at 6 p.m., and have the opportunity to take a guided tour to find all their classes before school starts. Come find out what KR is all about!
