SEPTEMBER 2015

Having provided tradies and DIY lovers in New Zealand with the equipment and know-how to get the job done for over three years, a brand new branch in Panmure has opened its doors for business. Thanks to a recent merger with G.I. Hire in New Zealand, residents and workers in Panmure will benefit from our expertise and range of equipment.

The Panmure branch is the 17th Kennards Hire branch in New Zealand. We are making terrific inroads in New Zealand. This was recognised recently when the Albany branch was announced as a recipient of a Gold Hire Excellence award by HIANZ.

The Panmure branch will be located in the old G.I. Hire facility at 4 Morrin Road, Panmure. For further information call 09 570 2168 or visit www.kennardshire.co.nz

Four and a half years after the Christchurch earthquake, the rebuilding of infrastructure continues. One such project is the replacement and upgrade of the Sumner wastewater network. To complete 3kms of deep drainage and de-watering, local business, CB Civil and Drainage, hired a range of equipment from Kennards Hire, including excavators, generators and loaders.

“The scope of works for 12 month project incorporated laying 1.5kms of 300mm diameter RRJ PVC pipe at depths of 2 – 3 metres,” explained Jamie Campbell, Director CB Civil and Drainage. “It also involved re-sizing

pipe bursting of approximately 120 lineal metres of 100mm diameter to 150mm diameter Polyethylene.”

Jamie and his team also assisted with the relining of approximately 140m of 225mm diameter pipe with 180OD PE and laying of approximately 400 lineal metres of 150mm diameter RRJ PVC to depths of 0-1.5m. In addition to pipelines the installation of several associated manholes was also undertaken by CB Civil and Drainage.

“We’ve used a lot of products from Kennards Hire on various projects including mini excavators, four tonne loaders, compactors demolition breakers concrete saws and generators and submersible pumps,” said Jamie. “If any of the equipment is required to have certification or qualifications for a particular site it’s taken care of by Kennards Hire.”

Established in August 2012, CB Civil and Drainage is a mid-size company specialising in civil infrastructure development and drainage works across the private and government sector in the Canterbury region. CB Civil and Drainage deliver all aspects of Civil, Sub-Divisional, Commercial and Residential drainage including well-point de-watering and sheet piling. PVC, Concrete and PE; including welding.

“The service we receive from Kennards Hire is excellent. Branch Manager Daniel Manning is always very responsive to our needs and works to ensure everything is right for a project,” Jamie said.

“Kennards Hire is also very flexible when it comes to equipment,” he added. “It’s a great benefit to off-hire equipment that’s still required on site but not being utilised. This eliminates the inconvenience of returning equipment and re-hiring it later, which is a great timesaving initiative.”

Kennards Hire now has 17 branches across New Zealand including specialist branches Kennards Hire Lift & Shift, which specialises in materials handling solutions and Kennards Hire Concrete Care, which has a comprehensive range of equipment for the concreting industry.

“The tide washed sand over the top of the debris so it couldn’t be seen,” explained John Graham, Owner of Alicon Ltd. “After a few months the tide washed the sand away and the sharp and potentially dangerous fragments of blue rock was revealed, which immediately had to be removed.”

The only available access was via a steep narrow path through a reserve, and a restrictive weight limit on a walk bridge made access to the site difficult. Environmental concerns also meant heavy machinery was not able to be used on the beach.

“We briefly considered using flexi bags and a helicopter,” said John, “but that wasn’t a practical option. That’s when Kennards Hire came on board with a practical solution of their tracked mini dumpers.”

It was a 1km round trip from the beach to the tandem trailer at the top of the path where the rocks were dumped. With a 500kg capacity the rubber tracked mini dumpers were able to be easily manoeuvred along the path and after only two loads the trailer was full.

“Without the mini dumpers from Kennards Hire the only alternative was a fleet of wheelbarrows. This would have led to the project being very time consuming and labour intensive,” John said. “With the mini dumpers we were able to

remove four tonne of rock from the beach in three days working in between the tides.”

John has more than 20 years’ experience in the civil construction industry. He established Alicon Ltd. in April 2015 and specialises in the construction of retaining structures and undertaking unique and complex landscaping projects.

Over the years John has hired a range of equipment from Kennards Hire and has been impressed with the service provided by Brendon Powley, saying,

A large landslide at an East Auckland beach in New Zealand called for the construction of a three metre high coastal rock wall, leaving the beach strewn with debris, rock chips and boulders. The massive clean-up operation to remove the blue rock was undertaken by local contractor Alicon Ltd. who hired two tracked mini dumpers from Kennards Hire.

service is 100 percent. “If Kennards Hire don’t have a particular piece of equipment available or carry it as part of their normal range, they source it from somewhere else or purchase it and have it readily available so we don’t lose time on a project. That’s the main difference dealing with Kennards Hire, they do whatever it takes to supply the right equipment.

“The guys wouldn’t even allow me a turn on the dumpers,” complains John

Dismantling sheds at an operational power station is a complex process. And that’s the challenge that was faced by Trent Carloss, Senior Project Manager Central Australia, McMahon Services. In order to make the process safer and more efficient, Trent hired a boom lift and excavator with a rock breaker attachment from Kennards Hire Alice Springs.

Trent explained that the scope of works involved the removal of four generator sets, a reciprocating engine and three gas turbines. It also required demolition of the three sheds that housed the turbines.

KENNARDS HIRE GIVE DISMANTLING CREW A LIFT

“The power station is in Tennant Creek, 500km north of Alice Springs,” said Trent. “The generators were placed on concrete plinths approximately one metre high, which was broken up by the excavator with a hydraulic breaker attachment so it could easily be removed.

Ideal for a range of excavation projects including trenches, pool excavations and footings, the tracked excavator is a powerful machine that is very manoeuvrable and enables work to be completed in areas with limited access.

“The sheds that housed the generators were fitted with large exhaust systems and air intakes. The boom lift from Kennards Hire enabled the riggers to access and facilitate the breakdown and safe removal of the loads,” he said.

With its 4 wheel drive and oscillating steer axle, the boom lift is well suited to undertaking

Now in its third year, the six-a-side tournament is named after Football legend, Craig Johnston. Craig, who grew up in the Lake Macquarie area, was one of the first Australians to have a long and successful career in the English Premier League, playing 267 games, including 190 with Liverpool.

“The students participated as either players, referees or officials, collating statistics and analysing data from both the games and skills clinic,” explained key organiser Richie Williams, Performance Improvement Specialist with P.R.I.D.E. Business Coaching.

“Each team competed in six games with a seventh game to decide the tournament cup winner, which this year was West Wallsend” said

Richie. “The players also attended a 30 minute skills clinic during their rounds.”

Kennards Hire Lambton became involved in the event by donating two large marquees. Light

KENNARDS HIRE POPS UP AT EASTLAND DEVELOPMENT

GENERAL HIRE

A Kennards Hire Pop-up Branch has been established onsite at Eastland, offering a wide range of equipment to Probuild’s contractors. This strategy enables Kennards Hire staff to provide immediate delivery of tools and machinery, assist with any maintenance enquiries and provide top notch customer service to more than 1500 trades and service personnel.

Dean White is the man tasked with managing the temporary Eastland Branch, and has enjoyed the challenge so far.

“The Eastland site is a hive activity, with around 150 new retail tenancies being added

to the existing infrastructure,” Dean explained.

“A job of this size requires an incredibly diverse range of equipment throughout the entire process. So far we haven’t fielded a request we haven’t been able to meet. As everyone knows, we’re all about customer service so to be able to facilitate the completion of this job on schedule is a satisfying feeling.”

With the Eastland development due to be completed in June 2016, Dean and his team have a busy stretch ahead of them.

Probuild is currently responsible for a $700, 000, 000 expansion of Eastland Shopping Centre in Ringwood, Victoria. When enquiries began to come in thick and fast to Kennards Hire branches around the region requesting equipment for the job, Victorian Business Development Manager Warwick Gee came up with an innovative way to supply this massive demand.

The 4WD Slasher is and has always been an incredibly popular machine across all Kennards Hire branches. Recently Geoff Lockwood, Public Land Manager of the Cardinia Environment Coalition dropped by the Packenham branch to get some advice on a big job.Grass had overgrown the access paths at the 2.2 hectare bandicoot reserve called Bandicoot Corner. There was also masses of Cortaderia growing on the access paths, and Geoff was unsure whether or not a slasher would be able to get the job done.

The Packenham team sent Geoff away with the 4WD Slasher, and the machine took this vast job in its stride. The 4WD Slasher is designed specifically to handle these bigger jobs. Excelling in heavy growth, the 4WD Slasher safely and easily manages steep and rough terrain thanks to its low centre of gravity.

“The team at Kennards Hire Packenham are always very helpful, and this visit to the branch was no exception,” Geoff explained.

“I had used the 4WD Slasher on a previous job and was thoroughly impressed with how it performed. However, I was unsure if it would have enough power to complete the job at hand this time around. In the end the 4WD Slasher cruised through the work in front of it.”

THE DAILY GRIND JUST GOT EASIERWhen Jason Cuniffe of Beenleigh decided it was time to give his mum’s driveway a good spruce up, he dropped by Kennards Hire in Oxenford, QLD to chat with the team about his options.Dave Vercoe of Kennards Hire Oxenford was on the job in a flash and recommended that Jason use a Concrete Grinder to start the job.“Dave and I were on the same page from the start,” Jason explained.

“He understood what I wanted to achieve, recommended a great piece of machinery in the concrete grinder, and was more than happy to show me exactly how to operate it. The results are amazing and now mum has a driveway that she’s really proud of.”

The Concrete Grinder is the perfect tool for levelling a concrete surface before laying any kind of tile or brick, whether it be decorative like Jason’s or otherwise. The walk behind model is easy to use and is available as both an electric and petrol powered unit.

Other uses for the Concrete Grinder include removing paint, pebblecrete in concrete, stains, tar, rubbery compounds, mortar droppings, ceramic tile mortar residue and stencilcrete.

The Journey to stage this incredible event began five months earlier. An organising committee of Tewantin Noosa Sub branch President Steve Drake, local event organiser Danielle Taylor of Firefly Solutions, Paul Jenkinson of the RSL and Noosa Heads Surf Club, Frank Wilkie, Frank Pardon and Jill Ackers of Noosa Council, along with talented director and producer, Ted Emery was assembled.

Michael Brennan from Raw Diversity was appointed Technical Director of the event. Michael called on many local businesses including Peter Cutcliffe from Kennards Hire Noosaville. Always smiling, Peter’s ‘anything is possible’ attitude helped in so many ways.

Production required a generator and long cable lengths, and site setup needed everything from a long ladder to fencing. The generator was booked, and consulting with Peter, distribution boxes and cables were organised. The 62amp run was almost 70 metres. Peter suggested several smaller lengths rather than one large one, which helped immensely when stringing the cable through trees and over the surf club tower as was required to ensure public safety.

Setup also required fencing. Originally it was thought the 1.1m barricade style would suffice, however, it had been previously intended that some

fencing would be shifted before commencement of the event, where time would be of an essence. Peter suggested the use of bollards where possible, which would save time.

One of the most awkward tasks involved towing and positioning a 3.5 tonne trailer and LED screen onto the lower part of the beach. Peter provided large mats to place under the wheels.

In the quiet just before dawn on Noosa’s main beach, an army of committed workers and volunteers gathered to create a once in a lifetime memory: A Commemorative Re-enactment of the Gallipoli landing in 1915. This fitting tribute was dedicated to those who served, survived or lost their lives on the shores of Gallipoli during WWI.

These were left onsite to assist with moving after the ceremony.

Nothing was too much trouble for the team at Kennards Hire, and when it was realised there was a shortage of chairs for the Returned Service men and women, an additional 100 chairs arrived from Kennards Hire within 30 minutes of a call.

As the day progressed, the Diggers Mound was sandbagged, thanks to the many volunteers,

mostly from Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, a Diggers’ tent was erected thanks to Noosa Sea Scouts, lighting was positioned and the sound setup completed. Noosa Council provided excavation machinery to create the mound, flatten areas for truss towers, and produce a ‘stage’ where the Chorale, and Mic Travis were to perform, and Noosa SLSC facilitated the comms and operations centre, from where director Ted Emery would command.

Around 150 Returned Service men and women were assembled in the car park, preparing to march on in front of the Noosa Heads Surf Club. Flares went up. In the predawn light three surfboats approached the shore carrying with them actor Shaun Bennett, who would tell the story of the Unknown Soldier.

A few hours after the 12000+ crowd has dispersed the production crew and volunteers dismantled the scene and Noosa’s Main Beach appears as pristine as it does any other day.

The team from Kennards Hire Noosaville not only covered every possible scenario with the equipment provided, but also went out of their way to ensure any problem that arose was quickly attended to and resolved.

“The painted area, which outlined handball and hopscotch squares was beginning to flake and became very slippery when wet, posing a hazardous safety risk,” explained Josh Cooke from Iconic Outdoors.

“Initially we considered using a pressure washer to remove the paint,” he said, “however this would have caused damage to the concrete.”

To remove the flaking paint completely and leave the area properly prepared for re-painting, Josh and his team used a walk-behind, double head 3-phase grinder. This grinder, which can be used wet or dry, is ideally suited to project sites requiring minor levelling of large concrete floors and removing soft compounds such as mortar, grout and thin adhesives.

“One of the considerations that needed to be taken into account was dust minimisation,” said Josh. “The grinder has a large industrial vacuum connected to the back of the unit to prevent dust dispersing throughout the site.”

Iconic Outdoors is a leading landscape architecture and design company in the Orange region. The company specialises in creating beautiful, well-crafted, outdoor residential living spaces, retaining walls, water features, garden and patio installations, lighting and paving.

The grinder has a 20amp requirement and the school only had 15amp power available. To power the grinder Iconic Outdoors also hired a trailer mounted 45kVA generator with 3 phase outlets.

“Since the Kennards Hire branch opened in Orange two years ago it has been very convenient for our business,” Josh said. “The customer service is outstanding and they are very responsive to our needs. This has led to establishing a good working relationship,” he added.

The equipment range at Kennards Hire Orange includes large items such as booms and scissor lifts, excavators, rollers, tippers, site sheds, and toilets. There is also more specialist concrete equipment available at Kennards Hire Concrete Care.

To help customers combat rising fuel costs, Kennards Hire has introduced a new line of solar lighting towers to its expansive fleet.Featuring either four or six heavy duty, state-of-the-art LED light fixtures, which boast remarkable brightness levels from 40,000 to 93,000 total lumens, these high-performing, innovative units present a more cost-efficient and environmentally friendlier alternative to diesel powered lighting towers.

The towers have been designed to meet the rigors of heavy use by commercial and infrastructure development companies, the oil and gas, mining and rail industry and the utility and security sectors. These are all industries where Kennards Hire has established itself as a preferred supplier of pumps, heavy materials handling equipment and general hire tools and specialist NATA Certified testing equipment.

“Being silent in operation these solar powered units are ideal for council and road maintenance crews working in residential areas,” explained Troy Clauss, Branch Manager Kennards Hire Traffic Woodridge QLD.

To maximise battery life, the control system is equipped with several selections including automatic on/off at dusk and dawn and settable run times from three to 12 hours. Another feature that allows users to maximise charge time is the lights are equipped with a solar array with large tilting angles.

In addition to eliminating fuel costs and potentially hazardous fuel spills, the trailer mounted units are

simple to operate and can be easily manoeuvred into position or relocated to a new site. Additionally if required the light towers can also be used for Mobile Road Maintenance, and are able to be towed while illuminated in the stowed position at low speeds. For Vegetation Control, Waste Collection and Mobile Surface Inspection.

Easy to read meters enable operators to quickly determine the best orientation to collect sunlight. A built-in 240 volt charger with an external charge receptacle makes it easy to charge the maintenance free battery bank should the conditions

or environment not support solar charging, such as when used inside tunnels, warehouses or workshops.

“At Kennards Hire we understand that on some sites a diesel powered lighting tower is not a viable option,” said Troy. “The addition of solar lighting towers means we’re able to offer customers a practical solution to their lighting needs without compromising on the level of illumination.

“We have already experienced great interest in these units, which complement our fleet of diesel powered lighting towers. And we expect their popularity to grow,” he said.

NSW, VIC, QLD and NZ branches will be taking delivery of new Rough Terrain Scissor Lifts from Snorkel.• Diesel-powered rough terrain scissor lift.

CHARITY

Its our annual charity time again, ‘Kennards For Kids.’ Running throughout September and October, we are looking to make life a little easier for sick, injured and disadvantaged kids around Australia and New Zealand, and help them get the best start to life possible. For over 10 years the business has used the months of September and October to raise funds and awareness for carefully selected children’s charities by donating $2 from each hire to these worthy causes. We are encouraging businesses and families to get involved this year, after the most successful year in 2014 where we raised over $350,000 for kids in need in Australia and New Zealand

HIRING FOR OUR FUTURE

This year we will be donating proceeds to Stepping Stone House, Kids Xpress, Variety - the Children’s Charity, the Constable Care Foundation and the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“We believe that every child deserves a fair start in life and the opportunity to realise their potential,” said Liz Ward, CEO of Kennards Hire. “This is my first year being involved with Kennards For Kids, but it is a project that I have admired and I look forward to working closely with the charities to help break the negative cycles that can begin early on in a child’s life.”

Anyone is able to throw their support behind Kennards For Kids and the charity-partners by visiting your local Kennards Hire branch and hiring equipment for any building, renovating or spring-cleaning projects you might have throughout September and October.

EVERY HIRE LIFTS A LITTLE LIFE HIGHER TOO.

In response to substantial growth and after more than a decade of serving customers, Kennards Hire Lift & Shift has moved from its Richmond location to new, larger premises in the nearby suburb of Abbotsford in Melbourne’s inner east. Located at 353-361 Johnston Street, Abbotsford, the new branch will be open from Monday 15 June.

Andrew Lambert, General Manager of Kennards Hire Lift & Shift said at approximately 1,260 square metres, the Abbotsford branch is almost double the size of the current Richmond site and will allow for future growth plans of the business to be implemented.

“The move has been in the planning for 12 months,” said Andrew. “Securing the ideal site in a central location and with an area large enough to accommodate expansion were critical factors.

“The new location will enable Kennards Hire Lift & Shift to better serve the growing needs of our customers in the Melbourne metropolitan area and surrounding suburbs.

“It also allows for the addition of new, larger equipment and will play a central and multi-faceted role in providing customers with an extensive range of material handling solutions for hire across a variety of industry sectors.”

KENNARDS HIRELIFT & SHIFT ISON THE MOVE

LIFT & SHIFT

MOBILE GLASS MACHINE IS A CLEAR FAVOURITEIn the Southern Suburbs of Cairns set on the hillside overlooking the city. Scott Small, Manager of AGA Fencing, and his team didn’t have time to admire the sweeping views. To overcome the challenge of installing a floor to ceiling glass wall in the kitchen and living area of the two storey home, Scott hired a 350kg mobile glass machine from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift.

In addition to the Abbotsford branch, Kennards Hire Lift & Shift has a branch in the south eastern suburb of Dandenong. This enables the company to serve the diverse needs of its customers throughout the region and along the southern corridor to the Mornington Peninsula.

The expansive and growing range from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift extends from hydraulic equipment such as porta power rams up to 600 tonne and the Durapac SyncMaster Hydraulic Jacking System, to torque wrenches up to 35,000Nm, 15 tonne and 30 tonne air skates. Kennards Hire Lift & Shift have also added 300 tonne modular spreader beams to its impressive product portfolio.

Chain blocks and winches in pneumatic, electric and manual operation up to 30 tonne and material hoists are also available for hire as are a wide range of cable hauling equipment including Capstan winches to 6.5 tonne and drum stands that hold up to 20 tonne.

With nine branches throughout Australia, Kennards Hire Lift & Shift has established an enviable reputation as the leader in specialist material handling equipment for hire.

“For our customers it’s business as usual, just at a larger site that is easily accessible and undercover,” Andrew said. “The move is about planning for the future and ensuring we’re able to better serve the needs of our customers,” he added.

“Being a container terminal we normally handle containers day-to-day, however we also need to lift other items such as boats for our customers from time to time,” said Operations Manager Jayn Sharrock. “Normally the boats we need to lift range between 15-30 tonne, which is well within our boat beam capacity. This was an unusual lift due to the size and weight of the boat, which was approximately 67 tonne”.

“Our General Stevedoring division is located nearby and has a range of heavy lifting equipment, however this is not always available when we need it,” said Jayn adding, “Having a wide range of lifting solutions available for hire from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift is a major benefit.”

The beam has a maximum load of 145 tonne at 60º up to 13.5 metres and is capable of lifting a 76 tonne load at 60º at 20 metres long. Kennards Hire Lift & Shift also have torque wrenches for hire to ensure the bolts on the beam are correctly fastened.

The boat was secured in a purpose-built cradle, which was pre-slung before delivery to Patrick. It was then loaded onto the ship.

“The Kennards Hire Lift & Shift team were extremely professional, knowledgeable and helpful,” Jayn said. “We’ll go back to Kennards Hire Lift & Shift when we require equipment that is capable of handling heavy or unusual size lifts.”

Ideally suited to projects across the mining, oil and gas industry as well as major civil construction and infrastructure developments and shipping ports, Kennards Hire Lift & Shift have an extensive range of both lifting and Spreader beams available for hire across Australia.

These vary from 250kg to 300 tonne. The 300 tonne Beam has a maximum width of 26 metres with a unit weight of 6,600kg when fully assembled, excl. shackles or rigging gear.

“The glass panels and the mobile glass machine from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift were lifted on site up to the second storey by a Franna crane,” explained Scott. “The nine double glazed panels for the glass wall were 2.1 metres high x 1.18 metres wide and 12mm thick. Each weighed approximately 220 kilograms,” he said.

This is the first of this type of project undertaken by AGA Fencing. The area had a suspended ceiling so tight tolerances needed to be taken into consideration for the wind loads. Once all the aluminium extrusion channels were installed, Scott was able to measure and order in the glass panels to size.

Scott said the 350kg mobile glass machine was an invaluable tool for this project as he was able to make adjustments to ensure each panel was precisely located and held securely. “It has a good range of movement, was simple to operate and was

MOBILE GLASS MACHINE IS A CLEAR FAVOURITEeasily manoeuvred in the tight and enclosed work area, which added significantly to site safety.”

Site safety is a huge factor when heavy material lifting is involved. Utilising the 350kg mobile glass lifting machine means that the job becomes a two-man operation, opposed to having multiple people involved in lifting and securing the job. In turn, this reduces the margin for error. The glass lifter also eliminates the risk of accidents or injury which is always a concern when moving large and awkward materials by hand. Utilising a glass lifter also meets the recommendations set by ASTM International in relation to the safe handling of glass from an OH&S standpoint.

Powered by a rechargeable high capacity battery system, the 350kg mobile glass machine features an extra-long battery life to enable extensive use, side shift and lift for tilting and responsive hydraulic lifting

mechanism with precision controls. It can also be easily adapted to lift other materials such as granite, concrete, wood, steel, fire doors and more.

AGA Fencing was established to cater to the ever expanding need for quality aluminium and glass balustrading and fencing in the Cairns area. The scope of works completed by AGA Fencing includes inspections and full installation services for glass and aluminium fencing for pools, and balustrades for residential properties.

“When undertaking projects with heavy panels of glass, it’s a real bonus for our business knowing this and other glass lifters are available for hire from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift,” Scott added.

“Additionally, with Kennards Hire having 24/7 support it adds greatly to convenience. And the service we receive is always first class.”

The Shot Blaster Ride On prepares concrete for re-coating and application overlays. It removes paint, rust and mill scale from steel and can remove paint and pavement markings from asphalt. The speed with which the Shot Blaster operates is the real customer pleaser!

Ideal for industrial plants, warehouse floors, parking garages, ship decks, airport runways and bridge and highway work, the Shot Blaster Ride On carries an on board dust collector, which meant clean up time was also saved at the National Racing Museum. A blast pattern adapter is available with the Shot Blaster, which allows for varying blast width and very specific line removal as required.

The floor of the National Racing Museum was left epoxy free, and without any chemical residue. The job was completed in 25% of the estimated time, saving the customer time and money.

Jorgen reported that the site manager was so impressed with the speed in which the job was completed, that he thought he should shout the team lunch to make up the rest of the time. Another happy Concrete Care customer!

Jamberoo Recreational Park, a long standing customer of Kennards Hire Concrete Care, recently required the removal of old pool paint to restore the pool surface to its former status.

WET SAND MASTER BLASTER

After careful consultation between the Jamberoo team and Kennards Hire Concrete Care experts, a decision was made to put the new Wet Sand blaster from Kennards Hire Concrete Care to use.

The Wet Sand Blaster suppresses up to 97% of airborne particles, which greatly improves safety during a job such as this. This was a significant factor in the completion of the job.

The Wet Sand Blaster is effective with any abrasive heavier than water, and when it hits its straps, can result in massive time reductions. A blast nozzle size of 25mm offers a powerful spray, which was more than capable of removing the old paint from the pool’s surface. For this particular job, the Kennards Hire Concrete Care crew suggested a garnet media 80 mesh should be used.

Grant Tremlett, National Product Manager for Kennards Hire Concrete Care, knew that the Wet Sand Blaster was the machine for the job the moment he was briefed.

“The Wet Sand Blaster is a highly efficient machine,” Grant explained. “This particular job was completed in approximately 1/3 of the time that it has taken in the past. The added bonus was that it significantly reduced operator fatigue that in the past had been done by handheld grinders. This has saved Jamberoo Recreational Park time and money as a result.”

The money saved thanks to the efficient completion of the job will be put towards removing paint from other pools in the facility, which means there is no rest for the Wet Sand Blaster!

GOING WITH THE FLOW IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

“The compound comprised of an office block and complete support infrastructure including wastewater treatment plant, waste management areas, diesel storage and handling area for generators and power supply,” said Dominic Xavier Managing Director SSI

“There was also an amenities area, sport and recreation area and pool for the staff,” he added.

Dominic also explained that Sustainable Solutions International were engaged as the engineering company to design and oversee the development of the water and wastewater treatment plant. They picked up the commissioning of the diesel plant and other infrastructure on-site.

“We used a range of equipment from Kennards Hire Test & Measure for commissioning including an air velocity meter, light meter and sound meter,” he said.

“The GE Ultrasonic Flow Meter was primarily utilised to assess flow rates through the diesel system after the lines were flushed and ensure they were free of test water. A minimum flow rate of two litres per second was required. The Ultrasonic Flow Meter from Kennards Hire Test & Measure allowed us to achieve this target.

“The unit also played a key role in assessing the flow rate and pressure of pumps for the fire equipment,” Dominic added.

For a large project in Papua New Guinea developing a new head office compound, Australian based company Sustainable Solutions International – SSI – utilised the new TransPort PT878 Ultrasonic Flow Meter from Kennards Hire Test & Measure.

GE Ultrasonic flowmeters use sound waves to measure the velocity of a fluid flowing in a pipe. This could include, potable water, wastewater, cooling and heating water, ultrapure water and liquids, crude oil, refined hydrocarbons, diesel and fuel oils, chemicals or other liquids.

At no flow conditions, the frequencies of an ultrasonic wave transmitted into a pipe and its

reflections from the fluid are the same. Under flowing conditions, the frequency of the reflected wave is different.

When using the GE ultrasonic flow meter from Kennards Hire Test & Measure a clamp is simply attached on the outside of the pipe. The instrument then indicates the flow in litres per minute or second and its velocity. This non-destructive method eliminates the need to stop the liquid flow of the pipe being tested, cutting the pipe and installing a consumable flow meter, sealing, pressurising and turning the flow back on, saving time and considerable expense.

A large, multifunction LCD screen presents measured data in alphanumeric format. Functions include flow velocity, volumetric or energy flow rates, and totalised flow in metric units. In graphic mode, the LCD shows both real-time and logged data, which is very useful for reviewing data and observing trends while on site.

Established in 2004 and with a team of multi-disciplinary engineers and scientists, Sustainable Solutions International provide environmentally sustainable and innovative engineering consultancy services and solutions. The company has grown

NEW CABLE ANALYSER PASSES WITH DISTINCTION

To test the cabling Adam Ridley, Project Manager at Chris Henderson Electrical, hired the new Fluke DSX5000 Cable Analyser from Kennards Hire Test & Measure.

“Two different systems were installed into the one building,” Adam explained. “This equated to more than 20,000 metres of category 6 data cabling and 700 different data points, all requiring labelling. Every single one of those data points had to be tested.

“The new Cable Analyser from Kennards Hire Test & Measure was used to measure the distance of each cable. If the cable was damaged or a fault was detected, it would indicate its precise location so it could be repaired,” said Adam. “It more than halved our testing time,” he added.

Speed and accuracy are two main advantages of the Cable Analyser. Copper certification to Cat 6A cable, which has less tolerance to interference and less noise margin in general, can be achieved in as little as 10 seconds.

The Fluke DSX5000 Cable Analyser enables testing and certification of twisted pair cabling for up to 10 Gigabit Ethernet deployments. The unit is also capable of handling cabling systems including Cat 5e, 6, 6A or Class FA (Cat7).

It’s the first field tester to support balance

measurements including Transverse Conversion Loss (TCL) and Equal Level Transverse Conversion Transfer Loss (ELTCTL). This is a key element to help determine electromagnetic interference (EMI).

In addition, the capacitive touchscreen allows quick tester setup with easily selectable cable types, standards and testing parameters. It allows operators to manage up to 12,000 test results with full graphics.

One of the main challenges on this project for Adam and his team was removing existing cabling where new walls were being erected and installing new cabling simultaneously, all under the time pressure of being complete for the first semester of the year.

“The availability of a range of testing equipment from Kennards Hire Test & Measure is a great benefit to our business. Being able to hire equipment

rather than purchase is cost-effective and adds significantly to job efficiency,” Adam said.

“Another advantage is convenience. With one call we can hire not just testing equipment but everything else we need for a site from Kennards, have it all delivered or ready for pickup.”

Chris Henderson Electrical is a leader in technical property services and maintenance across South Australia. The company has over 19 years of commercial power and data industry experience in electrical services, security, building automation, mechanical and fire system service and maintenance. The company works closely with clients to design, supply, retrofit, install, preventative and reactive work ranging from residential to commercial and industrial projects.

“Michael Hein from Kennards Hire Test & Measure has in-depth knowledge of the equipment as well as the electrical industry. His understanding of our needs was invaluable and makes getting the right equipment so much easier,” Adam said.

The equipment available from Kennards Hire Test & Measure incorporates power loggers, power quality analysers, fusion splicers, concrete cover meters and ultrasonic leak detectors. There is also an extensive array of hand-held devices and much of the equipment is calibrated to NATA specifications.
