FAMILY MISSION TRIP TO CALVARY CAMPUS IN LETCHER, KENTUCKYJUNE 30-JULY 7 There’s still room for you as we seek to make a difference in one of most poverty-stricken areas of the U.S. We’ll be winterizing homes, painting and leading a backyard Bible club in an area that we haven’t worked in previously. For more information email [email protected]
This three-week study will help children understand what it means to be a Christian, the importance of baptism and the Lord’s Supper, and getting started in daily Bible study and prayer. The class will meet Sundays, May 13, 20, 27 at 9:45 AM. RSVP to Shannon at

FISHING FOR SWANSDr. Greg DeLoachTeaching Pastor
When is the last time you went
fishing? Some of you may very well be fishing while you read this article. Others of you may not remember the last time you have been fishing. My fishing record is spotted at best. It is not that I do not like to fish, but I am an infrequent fisherman to say the least.
The last time I remember going fishing my boys were still, well, boys. One particular Saturday comes to mind. I joined Aaron and a couple of friends fishing at a church member’s pond. My job was to get the tackle set up, take a few fish off of hooks, point out good spots to cast, and defend our honor against a territorial swan. The kids had a great time and I developed a nervous tick looking out for the swan. I am not kidding you, this swan was intimidating.
I need to repeat something I wrote earlier: I am an infrequent fisherman at best. The real question is whether or not I should call myself a fisherman? That designation may fall along the lines of false advertising. What about calling one a Christian? Is it because of church membership? When I was a student in college I first heard the phrase, “Going to church does not make a Christian anymore than going to McDonald’s makes you a hamburger!” Is a Christian someone who was baptized and mumbled something about Jesus is Lord as the preacher did the dipping?
Why do you call yourself a Christian? At its most basic, to be a Christian is to be a follower of Jesus, the Christ. The early church did not even use the designation “Christian” but followers of “the Way.” (Acts 9:2) At the risk of using the crude
language of marketing, what are you advertising as a Christian? In other words, what is your witness? Theologian Miroslav Volf writes, “The main task as a witness is to help people acquire an accurate understanding of the Christian faith” (The Christian Century, Aug. 2001).
We cannot manipulate others to follow Jesus. The best we can do is remove obstacles in our lives and obstacles in the lives of others so that they may see as complete a picture as possible. Let God nudge. “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” (I Corinthians 3:6-7).
Yes, it is misleading to say I am a fisherman. I hope, however, that for me and for all of us that to bear the designation Christian will not be false advertising.
Peace be with you,Pastor Greg
