Rabbi’s MessageThere are few topics that lead to more

contentious and difficult conversations than gun violence in America. Saying the words almost immediately pushes one to choose sides – for or against, NRA and Second Amendment, or Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Everytown for Gun Safety.

Over many years I have served on the Rabbinical Assembly Resolutions committee. Over those years we have wrestled with the issue of gun control in many different forms. While it is clear to me that there are very sharply divided sides on this issue, it is also clear to me that there must be some common ground where people of good will can reach an agreement. The Rabbinical Assembly passed resolutions on various aspects of gun violence in 1990, 1995, 2011 and 2013. I believe that we can find that common ground. Please read on.

I want to thank our First Hebrew Social Action Committee for bringing this issue to our community in the form of a film and discussion this month. This film addresses one of the most frightening

manifestations of the gun control question: Kids and Guns. The film is a Diane Sawyer 20/20 episode that asks: what do young children who have been taught to stay away from guns do – when their parents aren’t watching? It is my hope that this can be one of the areas where people who disagree about every aspect of this question might be able to agree. When you see the film, I suspect you might join them.

Please join us on Thursday, May 21 at 7 PM at First Hebrew for a discussion of this crucial issue. Wherever you stand on what the availability of guns and access to guns should be, I’m sure you would agree that children should be safe from the danger that loaded guns in the home makes all too real. Let’s have this discussion. Let’s think, together, whatever your feeling about guns in general may be, so that we can make our children and our families safe from accidental death by loaded guns in the home.

Sisterhood…Women Enjoying Jewish LifeWhat a busy time it has been! I am working on

this article in the midst of the cleaning and cooking for Passover. And it seems as if spring may finally be on its way. We have had some warm days here and there and are looking forward to more. Hard to believe but our Sisterhood year is drawing to a close. By the time you read this, it will be May and nearly Mother’s Day.

This means that we will already be starting to work on the projects and programming for the coming year. How is that possible? It is possible because things do not just happen by themselves. They take the work of many hands and much planning. So there needs to be a chance to thank all those who work so hard for Sisterhood to be successful. Let me thank the members of the Sisterhood board: Danielle Calo, Shelley Kessler, Alice Krochmal, Barbara Ninos, Fran Olmsted, Sue Ellen Silber, Phyllis Stern, and Alice Yasuna. They work hard all year round to help bring our visions for the community to life. Thanks also to Babette Rubin who manages the Oneg Shabbat program. We thank all the members who participated in

Sisterhood Shabbat in January. Many other volunteers have stepped forward to help with various programs throughout the year- cooking, shopping, packing items, and doing whatever tasks have arisen. And of course, thank you to all the community members who participate in our programs and projects. Perhaps you donated to the food pantry or have delivered food for us; perhaps you donated to the victims of domestic violence; perhaps you sponsored an Oneg (or several), or bought wine for Passover, or Shalach Manot for your friends. You have all contributed to the strong community we have built together.

There will be a celebration of the entire FHC community on Sunday May 17th with the religious school students, the nursery school students, Men’s Club and Sisterhood. We hope everyone will join us for this event. It will be a time of connection and we look forward to seeing you all there.

Shalom, Mindy E. Steinholz Sisterhood President

On Sunday, March 8 our students and their parents gathered to study with First Hebrew Scholar in Residence, Rabbi Lawrence Troster. we learned about Sustainability and Happiness -what do we really need to be happy? We saw examples of the waste our society creates every day - plastic bottles and batteries and much more - and we asked ourselves how we can help our environment by chancing our every day practice.

J L E (Jewish Learning Experience)

The Jewish community marked Jewish Disability Awareness Month in February and JLE learners are exploring their own relationships with those who learn differently.

One of the goals of Project Based Learning (PBL) is for students to work collaboratively. Below you can see students from all our classes working on their 2 projects to reinforce empathy with people with disabilities.

One group of students is creating graphic portrayals (comics) that show negative and positive examples of showing sensitivity for people with disabilities via action figures the students created. After they create a scenario, they block it out in 'cells'. Then they draw the 'cells' to tell the story.

The second group is creating posters for each classroom that show real people with disabilities. The posters show each person and tell their story, including how they rose to the challenge of turning their disability into a unique way to live with their challenge.

Bingo Schedule

Why are we asking you to donate your time to helping out with Bingo? It generates approximately $25,000 in revenue per year to our operation of the synagogue. The time commitment is only about three hours on a Wednesday night. We now start Bingo at 6:30 pm so you and our customers can get home earlier. If you are opposed to fulfilling your obligation as a member, then pay the $400 Bingo assessment immediately and let Lisa know to take you off the Bingo list. As a member in good standing it is your obligation to participate in this fundraising activity. If the congregation chooses not to continue providing Bingo to the community and forfeiting the OPM (other people’s money), then the congregation will need to be assessed accordingly to raise the $20,000, or determine what services will be cut. Do your part of fundraising and show up for your assigned Bingo night. Bring a book or magazine to read (there is time when you are waiting). If you come late, it is still better than not coming at all. Or, if you choose, send the $400.

Important Note: Your 2014–2015 dues include a surcharge for Bingo. If a member family meets its two-bingo requirement during the year, the family will receive a credit. Similarly, if a single member meets his/her one-bingo requirement during the year, he/she will receive a credit.

URGENT MESSAGE: If you are unable to attend on your scheduled Bingo night, IT IS YOUR RESPONSBILITY TO GET A REPLACEMENT.Thank you for your continued cooperation!!!! Workers should report to Bingo by 6:15 pm and are expected to stay until at least 10:00 pm

We would like each student to submit a brief biography (5-7 sentences) to be placed in the synagogue bulletin. The biography could include information such as their Bar/BatMitzvah date, grade, school, outside interests, and should include a short description about his/her service project; you may also include a photograph if you like. The responsibility to write and submit this information belongs to the family of the child. Please do not cause unnecessary disappointment for your children when they don’t see their names in the bulletin with their classmates. Any articles sent after that time will be placed in the next bulletin, which may be after the Bar/Bat Mitzvah date.
