KPETS Board Karen Gerth Laura Whitman Bill Gerth Jim Martin Dr. Andrew Sloyer The pets of our Perry County member, Chris Bordner, were included in a new brochure, produced by Compassionate Care Hospice. It was released for public use at their recent staff meet- ing, featuring their Therapy Pet Program. Several months ago, Aubrey Smith, volunteer coordinator of Compassionate Care, put out a call for therapy pet teams to visit their hospice patients in local facilities. Chris volunteered with both Popsicle and Helga. They have been including hospice visits along with their regular KPETS therapy pet visits at Perry Village in New Bloomfield for several months. On April 12, 2007, CCH had a fu ll staff meeting, with 55 in attendance, and invited the therapy pet teams to join them and be part of the program. Aubrey introduced her part on therapy pets with a heartfelt explanation of the value our pets are to their program and the benefits they bring to the hospice patients in the facilities. There were teams from TDI, TDInc., Delta, KPETS, and some others. Each team was asked to address the audience with their pet and tell a little about them. Some had stories of finding their pets in shelters with only a few hours left to live, to just locating a responsible breeder for a dog that would match the needs of therapy pet work. The group laughed at Chris' story of taking Popsicle to visit the residents of Perry Village, with him riding on a wheel- chair because he is too heavy to carry, weighing 25 pounds. Many were charmed with Helga's gentle nature to people and her long silky hair. More people are appreciating the animal/human bond and are taking note of the little miracles that happen during therapy pet visits. It is wonderful to see other organiza- tions include therapy pets in their programs and it is a pleasure to help them accomplish their goal of being committed to quality of life no matter where a person in need may be found... a nursing home, a rehab center, a retirement facility....

KPETS Recap KPETS Recap KPETS Recap KPETS Fundrais e r at Fe lic it a - A HUGE SUCCESS ! ! ! Where does one start telling about an event like the "Evening with Jay Stutz" on April 28. Everything was so perfect. The dinner committee, chaired by Roslyn Rhodes put together a

TOP-NOTCH evening! I was truly overwhelmed. Thanks to each of you!

Frank Aponte, Stacey Chubb, Linda & Andy Euclide, Mary & Dan Fegley, Denise Procious, Roslyn Rhodes, Kelly Rogers, Jennifer Rule, Gini Swartzell and Cindy Wilson.

Just pulling up to Felicita was breath-taking. What an awesome place. We arrived a bit early and as we followed signs to our s pecia l even t , we weren t s u re we were a t th e r igh t p la ce. It looked like we were walking into an elite wedding reception! That was until we saw the goodie bags with paw prints all over them. The room

was filled with the committee members wearing KPETS nametags doing final touches on the details!

We found our table with the doggie bone chocolates at each setting almost too pretty to open! One hundred and thirty people came out to support KPETS that evening.

We meandered around nibbling on delicious appetizers, while checking out the silent auction tables (that is plural!) with the items to bid on. Oh my, and what a variety! From a hand-made quilt to pet portraits, from day spa certificates to gun store certificates. Week-long get-aways, autographed sports pics and ball, a huge dog bed, all kinds of doggie items and peo-ple stuff too. It was time to shop shop shop.

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner - even us vegetarians! The live piano background dinner mu-sic was beautiful. But bidding turned to a frenzy as time ran out before Jay started his pres-entation.

Ah . . . th e p res en ta t ion . If you m is s ed th is even t , I m s or ry. It wa s per fect a n d ju s t for u s ! Wh a t a pers on a lity. He s s u ch a joy to lis -ten to with his wit and humor, but the knowledge this man pos-sesses is incredible. We all came home with new ideas on how to implement our pets in helping people. Jay will need to be our guest again next year, for sure.

Jay was open for questions and pictures afterwards and his smile never faded.

Paul Scott of Jazz 92.7 announced the auction winners and THEN there was even more! Door prizes! Everyone went home with one!

This event was so much more than I could have imagined. And KPETS has become so much more than I could have imagined. To all of you who helped pull it together, all of you who at-tended and supported the event, and to those of you who made donations even though you cou ldn t be th ere. Thank you This was the biggest fund-ra is er we ve ever h a d - a n d it s a ll THANKS TO YOU ! - Karen Gerth

Evening with Jay Stutz! Just wanted to say congratulations on the success of the fund raising event Saturday evening! The com-mittee did an amazing job- the choice of setting, the organization, the food, the speaker- everything was great! I travel to fund raisers and conferences all over the country with my husband, and he agreed that this event was on a par with any professionally arranged event we have attended. Hoping this will be-come an annual event!
