Separated by eight miles on the map, the rivalry between the two Fort Kearny Confer- ence schools brought fans to the edge of their seats. The Wildcats grabbed a 7-point advantage at the end of the opening quarter. However, the Falcons fought to defend their home court, and their perfect record. Wilcox-Hildreth matched Axtell’s scoring output in second and fourth quarters, and outdid them in the third. Then, in the final seconds, the Falcons’ Matthew Hinrichs launched a potential game-win- ning shot, only to have it rebounded by Axtell’s Sturgis Hanson. The Wildcats ran out the remaining time, and hit a final free throw to end the Fal- cons’ undefeated season, 55-52. “I said if we could win the battle of the boards, I thought we would be successful tonight, and we didn’t,” said Wilcox-Hildreth coach Brent Hinrichs. “We didn’t get very many second-chance points, and they got a lot of them – a lot of second-chance points that were just put backs. You’re not going to win very many basket- ball games giving up that many baskets inside.” Part of the Falcons’ first-half struggles came when their big man, Tristan Farley missed much of the second quarter due to foul trouble. Point guard Ivan Damit-og also sat most of the second quarter with an ankle injury, after accumulating three assists in the first quarter. “I’d probably say our defense overall was the key,” said Axtell coach Andy Klepper. “They did miss quite a few open shots. Tristan Farley got in foul trouble, which might have gave us an inside advan- tage, “Another key was our hot start. We’ve been a slow-start- ing team all year, so it was nice to have that opposite effect tonight, and come out and start fast.” Axtell’s Adam Lun- deen led the offensive charge with a 14 points. Teammate Cody Nickel chipped in 11 and Han- son finished with 10. “We did have some poor free-throw shooting tonight, and we did have quite a few turnovers,” Klepper said. “I still think there’s room for improvement yet, which is great. We’re just happy to play good enough tonight to get the win.” Matthew Hinrichs netted a game-high 16 points to fuel the Falcons. Tristan Farley finished with 12 before fouling out with four minutes left in the game. Both players had double-dou- bles with Hinrichs collecting 13 rebounds and Farley grabbing 10. “It’s a loss to a good team. We would have loved to battle back and win it. I still thought at halftime we had a shot to win, but we have to make sure we don’t let it affect us in a negative way,” Brent Hinrichs said. “We have to look at the things we do correctly and look at the things were not doing right, and try to improve on those and put a better product on the floor.” Wilcox-Hildreth 52, Axtell 55 Score by Quarters WIL-HIL (14-1) 11 10 20 11 – 52 AXTELL (12-3) 18 10 16 11 – 55 WILCOX-HILDRETH — Matthew Hinrichs 16, Triston Farley 12, Dalton Penny 6, Marshall Jelden 6, Ivan Damit-og 6, Caleb Springer 4, Dax Fouts 2.
