    EDITORIAL

    MEDIA ATTENTION TO LOCAL CRICKET!

Over three decades, if not more, majority of cricket is being played atWoodley Park, in Los Angeles, California. This is the headquarters forcricket in Southern California. ESPN, Los Angeles recently appeared atWoodley Park in Los Angeles to portray the cricket played here. This isa good sign for promoting cricket in these parts.

Thanks to Amar Shah and John Lazar of ESPN, Los Angeles, who took interest inlocal cricket and came to Woodley Park on two weekends to provide much neededexposure to local cricket. This segment which can be seen on the following link justintroduces Woodley cricket.

    DIRECT LINK:http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/news/story?id=6210816

The video title is Leo Magnus Cricket Complex

The Story title is A cricket mecca in the L.A. suburbs

We wish ESPN becomes the pioneer in patronizing cricket in these parts. With althe efforts made all these years by the local cricket associations and USACA, wecould not attract local (American) kids to play this game. Media coverage isessential to promote cricket and it is high time the cricket administration at alllevels in USA not only realize this but also make sincere efforts to have the mediahelp at all times.

Local cricket administration should contact the local media on all occasions and

have a liaison person from their board to educate local media on cricket andprovide them input (a narrative and scores) on the games played during theweekend. This liaison person should ensure that the local press covers local cricketon a regular basis.

In our opinion, cricket in USA will not catch on unless and until we have the mediacoverage.

SCSCSCSCCA TO START LEAGUE THIS WEEKEND?CA TO START LEAGUE THIS WEEKEND?CA TO START LEAGUE THIS WEEKEND?CA TO START LEAGUE THIS WEEKEND?

Turning to other burning topics of local cricket, SCCA is scheduled to start theirleague season by this weekend. Unfortunately, as late as Thursday (3/31/2011)evening the grounds were not made ready to play any game, leave alone leaguegames. It is understood that the Board of Directors have approved the budget forthe preparation of grounds and the nets as early as February, 2011. Nothing hasbeen done. Unfortunately, democracy never worked in SCCA.

Historically, almost all of the Presidents that were elected are sole proprietors (inbusiness terms called as Mama, Papa organizations) and are used to doing things

their own way without consideration to the people they serve. May be this isbecause these are the people who can devote more time than anyone else workingfor a major employer. These individuals are not used to following the Rules andRegulations. SCCA is a registered non-profit organization and come under thejurisdiction of Department of State, State of California. Non-compliance with theRules and Regulations stipulated for non-profit corporations may jeopardize itsown existence.

There are a few individuals floating around who rub shoulders year after year withwhoever is elected as President and try to influence the decision making. You couldsee these individuals every year in either the same committee or in othercommittees. They discourage any new ideas and delay the progress.

If progress has to be made, the newly elected executive should put their foot downand implement the projects for the benefit of membership at large.

Contrary to rumors floating around, Rec. & Parks department has cleared the bushon the land between the nets and Woodley, for facilitating parking for an event ofDepartment of Prisons. This has nothing to do with cricket.

Finally USACA has announced that they will hold the election for its officers inOctober, 2011. The regional elections, particularly the newly created North-Westand South-West regions will be held in April, 2011. This is a good opportunity tobring in changes both in the personnel of USACA and its administration.

    BATT(LING) POWER PLAY!Dr. V.V. Giri

Batting Power Play (BPP) - literally makes the captain of every side a BPP (Blood Pressure Patient).Nowadays the Batting Power Plays have become a real Battling Power plays. Every side is struggling withit. The fact is, honestly teams dont know when exactly to take it and whenever they take it, it backfires.India is the country worst affected by this batting PPs. In this World Cup, India tied a match against England

and lost a match against SA from winning position. Both are due to the wrong timing and approach of thebatting PP.I find the think tank of every side dont think well about the Power Plays. Be it Bowling PP or Batting PP

Whether the score is 30 for 4 or 70 no loss, you see the bowling side opt for PP immediately after themandatory PP of ten overs. I cant understand why? ICC has created these merciless Power Plays to the advantage of batting side and to make the bowler suffer

further. A Power Play is designed to help the batsmen to score more runs and it is to bring excitement to thebatting.

When the bowling side is struggling with the start (that is) when the batting side is well placed in the first ten

overs with no loss or without losing many wickets, why should the bowling PP be taken immediately.

Every time I look forward for a different tactics by the fielding side captain, I was disappointed. I find him

mechanically opt for PP from 11 to 15 overs and struggle more. It is absurd and suicidal. Why cant he postponethe PP and take it when wickets fall. It is very easy to attack the new batsman with field restrictions than a wellsettled bat.Similarly, the batting sides also dont really have clear ideas. They start breaking their head from 30th over

onwards and end up taking in the wrong time and suffer. There is general opinion that bowling power play should be taken earlier and batting power plays must be taken

only after the bowling power play, that too towards the end. This is totally wrong.Power Plays in my opinion are meant to upset the opponents more than to take advantage of it. A side mustutilize the power play to turn the match in its favor. How to do that? A clever captain can upset the opponent by

opting for the power play at a strategic time and spoil their rhythm. For example, the batting power play must be taken when the spinners are on top with perfect rhythm on ahelpful wicket. To disrupt their attacking situation, you opt for PP. When you do that, the fielding side captain

will most probably stop the spinners and bring on his medium pacers.

At that time you need to use your head. You should not go after the bowling. You have achieved in stopping thespinner on top. Now just play the medium pacers for just 4 to 6 runs per over if they bowl tightly. When the

spinners come back after the PP, probably the batsmen are well settled (if you dont lost wickets to the medium

pacers during PP) and can attack the spinners better. The spinners also wont have that kind of same rhythm todominate.

  • 8/7/2019 KCW Apr 01 2011 - Issue 21

    5/13

Similarly when the fast bowlers are on top, you opt for PP. They naturally go on the defense and change the line

    of attack.

In a typical ODI match situation, the bowling is distributed like this. First ten mandatory overs will be bowledby the medium pacers or probably (occasionally) the best spinner in the bowling side. Again the bowling PP if

taken immediately after ten, will be bowled by the similar type of bowlers.

Usually the spinners take over from fifteen to thirty. The non-regular bowlers bowl from thirty to forty. Themain spinners bowl the remaining quota of overs from 40 to 44 and then the top medium pacers complete from

44 to 50.In such a situation, the ideal timing of batting PP would be from 40 to 44 when the best spinners come on tobowl. The bowling captain will be forced to postpone them and bring the best medium pacers who were

supposed to bowl the 45 to 50 over.

The batsmen should see to that they bat without losing wicket and get around just a minimum of 4 to 6 runs andget set. Now the final overs will be bowled by the spinners or non-specialist PP bowlers. That time the batsmen

    should make merry.

Many sides including India do not realize this and opt for PP from 40 to 44 overs, try to slog the specialistmedium pacers, lose wickets, send new batsmen, they also try to slog the difficult bowler and lose more wickets

and eventually get bundled out cheaply.Similarly, the bowling PP also need not necessarily be taken from 11 to 15. Dont opt when the ball is new andheavy. Wait for the ball to become soft, Wait for the situation when two new batsmen are at the crease, opt for

PP and attack with close in fielders. One thing the sides should remember. PPs are not meant for slogging with the bat. Batting PP is mainly to upsetthe bowling rhythm and bowling PP should be taken when the batsmen are down. That is, more importance

must be given to upset the opponents than to use for their own side. Of course, more than the captain, the coaches must play a greater role in choosing the PP. In soccer the coachestake such important decisions from outside as looking from outside gives better picture and also gives time to

think and analyse the situation correctly.I am sure from now on, more importance would be given to the timing of PP and you can see lots of mind

    games in ODI cricket.

    PAK PACKED!Courtesy ofGIRICKETcollections

Again too many blunders were witnessed at Mohali, where India played Pak. Yes, Pak did better than India (in

making blunders). Finally, the team that did more blunders lost. It appeared that both the teams tried to lose the

game. Pakistan was able to succeed in their approach and India failed miserably!!

Dhoni started the blunder by dropping Ashwin, the best spinner in India from the playing eleven, the real reason

    is a mystery.

India won the toss and elected to bat. A great start from Sehwag, who thrashed the Pak opening bowlers andnever allowed Gul and Razzaq to settle. That brought the young lefty Wahab and he removed Sehwag in his

first over itself. The Simon Taufel LBW decision was questioned by Sehwag and as expected Taufel won. What

a great umpire he is. Again, more than the bowler, the pitch played a major role in this incident. The ball didnot come up to even knee height.Today, I was surprised to see the Indian batsmen struggling so much to Pak spinners. I thought India would

handle doosras and googlies easily but I was wrong. Sachin was beaten by every spinner. He had no clue on Ajmal and Afridi. After being quoted as saying that he

would not allow Tendulkar to score his 100th international century, Shahid Afridi and friends then did their best

to guide him in that direction. The ball was coming slow of the pitch thus posing problems to stroke playersSachin was not an exception and his timing on stroke play was not great resulting possible catches. It took an epidemic of clingers to make Tendulkar's 85 happen. Tendulkar was dropped - Sachin was dropped 5times - Three times off Afridi's bowling, 3 catches, one late stumping, One DRS survival.

Remember, Sachin vehemently opposed the UDRS all these years and today the same DRS saved him. Finally

Afridi decided to show his underlings how catches needed to be seized. Given that the ball had come straight at

him and he'd actually hung on, Boom Boom was allowed to do a bit of celebrating.

Sachin had played many marvelous chanceless innings but hardly won the match for India. Today he played an

innings he would not like to remember but won the match and got the Man Of the Match award. Finally the

Jinx that if Sachin scores, India loses was broken.Pak spinning trio - Ajmal, Hafeez and Afridi mesmerized every Indian batsmen. Worst was Gambhir. This

batsman does not know what a front foot forward block is. He needs to go back to school. I have been watchinghim - for a good length delivery, he plays standing on the crease or little of the back foot.

Whenever he wants to go forward, he walks out and plays. That is a handicap. He is unable to stretch the front

foot forward enough to reach the pitch of the ball. You can walk out of crease, only when you sight the ball wellor when you are well set. To me he looks like a bunny. I wonder how the opponents failed to do their home

    work for him all along.

Sehwag, Kohli, Yuvi,Dhoni, Harbajan..., all these batsmen were out playing across the line. Finally Raina came

  • 8/7/2019 KCW Apr 01 2011 - Issue 21

    7/13

to rescue and batted like a champion in the company of no clue tail and India managed to reach 260 for 9 in 50

overs.Pakistan started well in its reply. Kamran and Hafeez played the Indian medium pacers - Zaheer, Asish andMunaf quite comfortably. Pakistan briefly appeared on course to upset the odds after Hafeez eased their run

chase off to a promising start.

But his opening partner Kamran Akmal flashed a square-drive at Zaheer into the hands of Yuvraj at point, and

then Hafeez himself spoiled his own good work with a poorly-conceived and executed shot which resulted inhis caught-behind departure off Munaf Patel for 43. Asad Shafiq was bowled middle-stump trying to cut

Yuvraj, and Younus Khan holed out off the slow left-armer at cover. Umar Akmal temporarily raised Pakistan hopes again. But once Harbhajan Singh did him for pace with a flatter

delivery from round the wicket, only something exceptional from the big hitters Abdul Razzaq and Shahid

Afridi could put the match back in the balance and they could not find the form that has been missing allthrough the tournament and went out with a whisper instead of a roar. Misbah-ul-Haq almost grounded to a halt at times in an oddly-paced 56 from 75 balls, and appeared to gamble

all on a delayed power play, but by then, as the run rate required rose alarmingly, others had fallen trying and

failing to keep Pakistan in contention.

Needing 30 off the last over, Misbah heaved at every ball but could not pierce the field never mind get the ball

over the heads of the men on the boundary. India's 260 had looked vulnerable but in the end it proved more than

    enough.

Misbah-ul-Haq, who top-scored for Pakistan with 56, helped take them from 9-208 to a situation where anunlikely 30 was needed off the last over. That was never going to happen. Though India beat Pakistan comfortably, I am not at all comfortable with Indian batting. Only Raina played

sensibly. Dhoni has no business to go earlier than Raina in the batting order. Against Sri Lanka, I fear the

"triple M" - Murali, Mendis, Malinga would easily fox the Indian batsmen. I don't expect Yuvi, Gambhir, Kohli, and Dhoni to tackle them well.

I was shocked today when Dhoni said he read the pitch wrongly!! No captain makes this mistake easily, simplybecause there is lot of time to decide (you have couple of days), there are many advisors with you - Coach,

Support staff, Groundsmen and former cricketers. I don't believe this reason for dropping Ashwin. This appears

more as a cover-up against all the criticisms received for dropping Ashwin.

For the finals, India should play Ashwin for Nehra and Yusuf for Gambhir. I guess he is now injured. Even

    otherwise, Pathan should replace him.

It's probably fitting that two ornaments to the game get to play off in the World Cup final in what will, for oneof them certainly, be his farewell to international cricket.India and Sri Lanka will meet in Saturday night's cricket World Cup final, with the match set to feature the

cricket legends - Sachin Tendulkar and the retiring Muttiah Muralidharan.

    INDIA vs PAKISTANPrakash Krishnagiri

The semi-finals of a world cup, India Vs Pakistan, one would have expected great skills at display befitting the

stage. With Passion and Patriotism running feverishly high, an Indian or a Pakistani was within his rights toexpect a great game.

The Who is Who of India poured into the Stadium in support of the Men in Blue. The movers and shakers of theIndian Parliament made their presence as well. The stage was made even bigger by the presence of the Indian

PM and his Pakistani counterpart. Such August gathering needed a great game.

At the end of the Game, Team India walked out victorious. It was not a one-sided match as I thought it would

be. Had one of the two teams entered the ground, fully awake, it would have been a one-sided affair, as Ipredicted.

The cricket crazy fans of India and Pakistan have dubbed this game as a tense game. The intensity, no doubt

was very high mainly because of the nature of relationship the two neighbors have.

The cricket that was on display in the Semi-Finals was one of the below-par exhibitions of the game in a Semi-

final event. When teams reach up to the Semi-finals of an event, the standard of the game is expected to be in a

much higher level. Unfortunately, that was not the case in this contest.

The standard of the game was very poor. Dropped catches, poor fielding, bad bowling, poor batting and poor

team selection too, every aspect of the game was found wanting in this contest. The only exception was WahabRiaz who gave a stand-out performance, aided at times by poor shot selection of the Indian Batsmen.

Was it the pressure of playing each other? Or was it just a bad day at work by both the teams? Surely, no one

can answer this. This game is surely not a showpiece of ODIs. Many were expecting one or two players fromIndia or Pakistan to stand-up to the occasion and excel with brilliance in clinching the game in their teams

favor. Unfortunately, the game was not scripted that way and the team with lesser unforced errors won the

    game.

This world cup has seen some great games like the England-India, England-South Africa, England-Ireland

encounters. These games restored the credibility of the ODIs and presented a strong case for the continuation of

ODIs. The Indo-Pak encounter was surely a disappointment.

India won the game but the quality of the game was not worth the Billing.

    PONTING QUITS CAPTAINCY!Courtesy ofGIRICKETcollections

Aussies also have lots of favoritism in selection. The way the most over rated player/captain - Michael

Clarke is pushed up over Hussey & others, is evident. They have many 'in-fighting' too (Dean Jones Vs SteveWaugh; Damien Martin Vs Ponting; Warne Vs McGuill etc etc) Plus the omission of some great cricketers

(Langer, Slater, Boon, Stuart Clark, Andy Bichel + + +) for no reason suggests that all is not well in Oz

    selection process.

Only difference is, ACB cover up things very well, like the way they did in match fixing cases of Warne &

Mark Waugh. Both fixed the match against Pak along with Salim Malik, lost the match, but managed to come

out clear betraying Malik (Courtsy-then ICC chief Malcolm Speed).Ponting is not a great captain. Ponting was living in the glory of Warne & McGrath. His down fall started ever

since they retired. His batting technique is also not fool proof (Freddie exposed him many times). The initialfront foot forward and across has always worked against him. When you have flaws in technique, they work

against you during the bad form. So this was expected. Also, his street fighter / non walking / ungentlemanly

attitude branded him as a villian. More over, two former cricketers worked against him non stop (Ian Chappell& Warne).

Now watch - Shane Watson is brought in against Michael Clarke.

    CRICKET WORLD CUP RAMAYANA!Courtesy ofGIRICKETcollections

India (Ram) married World Cup (Sita) in 1983 and in 1996 Srilanka (Raavan) took away Sita (World Cup)

Now after 14 yrs ofVanvaas, Ram is waging war on Raavan and you know the result...

We just need one Vibishana to aid India. Enemies enemy is a friend. Consult West Indies and others who got

beaten badly by Sri Lanka and they will happily be your Vibhishana. How many you want?

Hanumanwho was not mentioned, would eventually burn Lanka. Bhajji or Yuvaraj can easily play this role.

Womens perspective: We hope that India (Ram) will take care of World Cup (Sita) forever unlike in

Ramayana! Hope India retains World Cup for some time to come.

    GOODBYE PUNTER!Courtesy ofGIRICKETcollections

India hopped over the Kangaroos today at Ahmedabad and eliminated them from the World Cup. Now it is

    curtain for the Aussies.

In a pulsating match, India prevailed over the Aussies in the war of nerves and beat them by 5 wickets. The

Yuvaraja of Indian cricket in the company of Gambir and Raina, steered India safely home in a chase of 261

    runs.

Earlier, the impetus was given by Sachin who played a marvelous innings of 53 in a quick time. Gambir andVirat steadied the innings well with decent partnership. Yuvraj joined Gambir and these two literally pulled the

    match away from the Aussies.

A sudden madness of poor running between the wickets caused Gambirs wicket. Both batsmen ran likepossessed men trying to get out thrice. Dhoni followed Gambir and suddenly India looked like crashing down.

In came Raina and to every ones disbelief, he batted very comfortably, handled the short pitched deliveries

tactfully and moved the score board smoothly. That was the turning point of the match. Until then the pendulumwas swinging either way.

Raina and Yuvraj displayed real character and displayed one of the best chasing to reach home without further

debacle. As on today, whatever the man with the Golden arm, Yuvraj Singh touches turns gold. Nothing can gowrong for him and as expected he was adjudged the Man of the Match. Earlier, the Punter, Ricky Ponting batted like a champion and scored a fluent century in a tricky wicket which

was turning square from ball one. It is sad to see Pontings innings go in vain as the Oz bowlers let him down inthe second half.India should be grateful to Ashwin who once again opened the bowling and kept the Oz guessing. Full credit

must be given to him for bowling almost all his quota of overs during the power plays creditably when themedium pacers like Munaf, Nehra and Sreesanth were struggling.Yuvraj was again among the wickets, grabbing two more vital wickets. But once again the pick of the bowler

was Zach. What a World Cup he is having. We saw the ball dancing to his tune and mesmerizing the opponents.

I must tell it was a pleasant shock for me to see the standard of Indian fielding. I have never seen such goodperformance in recent times and today it was special as usual coming from Raina, Ashwin, Kohli and Yuvraj. It is a sad exit for the 3 time champions Australia. One bad match in the quarter finals and they are out of 2011

World Cup. ICC has to be blamed for such a format. Anyway thats cricket, the game of glorious uncertainties.

Well done Aussies, Good bye Punter.

YET ANOTHER FEATHER IN THE CAP OF CHANDRA ROY!By Staff Reporter

Yes, yet another successful year for Southern California Winter Cricket League of 2010-11. The finals of

Divisions I and II were held at Long Beach ground on Saturday, March 26, 2011. Transformers played againstTorrance and Hollywood AS played against Culver City.

Transformers and Hollywood As won the championship in their respective divisions. Colin Cox won the Manof the Match award for Division I while Satish Balu won the Man of the Match award for Division II.

Winter League which was started by Chandra Roy about nine years ago is growing in strength year by year. Inthe recently concluded season, there were two divisions consisting of 14 teams. Even though there was

competition between teams, the matches were played in a friendly atmosphere. This league which occurs at

the conclusion of the SCCA league provides an opportunity for the players to keep in touch with the game andplay cricket throughout the year.

Winter League is a one man show and is run professionally. This tournament attracts more teams each year and

is run solely on sponsorships and private donations. This year, amongst others, the league had Vasutex, RodeoRealty, Jayabharat Restaurant, State Bank of India, as sponsors.

Paucity of grounds deprives the cricketers from playing more such tournaments. There are a number ofcricketers who do not play regular league because of work/family commitments. If more such 20-over

tournaments were held for a shorter duration, these cricketers would be playing again.

In Division I final, Transformers beat Torrance by 7 wickets. Torrance batted first and scored 65 runs in 17.4overs. In reply, Transformers scored the required runs in 15 overs for the loss of three wickets.

Scores: Torrance 65 all out (Hari Srinivas 11, Colin Cox 3 for 7, Abhimanyu Rajp 2 for 12 and Hardeep Singh 2 for 15, Ashish Lone

2 for 6) lost to Transformers 66 for 3 (Abhisek Powar 22 not out, Manjeet Jaichand 22, Hari Srinivas 2 for 11).

In Division II final, Hollywood As beat Culver City and became the Champions for 2010-11 season.

Scores: Hollywood As 101 for 9 in 20 Overs (Tanin Chouwdhry 3 for 17, Ayez Shaikh 3 for 15) beat Culver City 71 all out in 16

Overs (Prasad Kasturi 3 for 30, Abhishek Gupta 3 for 9)

At the conclusion of the finals, a presentation ceremony was held to distribute trophies to the winners, runners-
