Kate & Nicole's Fourth Grade Newsletter October 21st, 2010 UPCOMING EVENTS IN 4th GRADE: 10/28 Field Trip to Philipsburg Manor *BRING LUNCH 11/4 Field Trip to the African Burial Ground 11/5 & 11/11 Parent Teacher Conferences- NO SCHOOL 11/16 FARM BREAKFAST! 8:30 a.m Reading with our Kindergarten Buddies from Elizabeth and Samson's Class: Young Geographers Writing in Fourth Grade We are building our awareness of the world around us by learning about the physical and political characteristics of the earth. We are working on sharpening our mapping and atlas skills. Although we aim to get a global picture through maps, we are narrowing down on regions that have particular relevance to our social studies curriculum. Spend time at home... exploring regions of the world that have particular significance to your family check out some of the locations on googlemaps spend time mapping out directions on your next trip- could be to a museum or other location in NYC, or a trip farther away! Hooray! We just published our first pieces as 4th Grade Authors! We started by generating seed ideas and explored a few until we narrowed it down to one that we thought would make an engaging small moment story. Then we drafted our pieces focusing on writing an exciting beginning and taking out any unnecessary information. We edited for paragraph structure and COPS (Capitalization, Punctuation, Omissions, Spelling) before a small publishing party in our room where we were able to read and respond to our classmates' stories. Please come check out our writing board inside the classroom and enjoy small moments about encounters with animals, jumping from cliffs, tasting new foods, getting our ears pierced and much more!
