Boundaries
Karnataka is bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west, Goa to the northwest,

History of Karnataka
● It was formed on 1 November 1956, with the
passage of the States Reorganisation Act.
● Originally known as the State of Mysore, it was
renamed Karnataka in 1973.
● Vijaynagar was a great Hindu empire of South
India at the present location of Karnataka.
● To check the British expansion towards Mysore
state, Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan fought
four significant Anglo-Mysore wars. After the
death of Tipu Sultan in 4th and last Anglo Mysore
war, Mysore state was annexxed to British
territory in 1799.
● Kittur Queen Chenamma revolted against British
in 1811 as a resentment towards Doctrine of
Lapse.

अधिधनयम के पाररत होने के साथ हुआ था।
● यह मूल रूप से मैसूर राज्य के रूप में जाना जाता

Lapse के धवरोि में अोंगे्रजोों के खिलाफ धवद्रोह
धकया था।
Geography
● The name Karnataka is derived from Karunadu
means “lofty land”.
● The two important river system are i) Krisna and
tributaries, ii) Cauvery and tributaries. Both these
rivers flow out of Karnataka eastwards to Bay of
Bengal.
● Tungbhadra and Kabini are other important rivers.
● Important Mountains of Karnataka – Western Ghats,
Chitradurga Hills, Biligiri Rangan Hills, Nandi Hills,
Badami Hills, Gokak Hills
● Mullayyanagiri (in western ghat) is the Highest
peak of Karnataka with an altitude of 1930 m.

● मुल्लायनावगरी (पधिमी घाट में) कनागटक की सबसे
ऊाँ ची चोटी है, धजसकी ऊाँ चाई 1930 मीटर है।
● The 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election was held on 12 May 2018 in 222 constituencies
to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
● The election saw a voter turnout of 72.13 per cent, the highest in Karnataka since 1952 assembly
polls.
● The Aam Aadmi Party also made its debut in the state.
● The election led to a hung assembly, with the BJP emerging as the single largest party, with 104
seats and the Congress winning the popular vote.
● After 3 weeks of turmoil, HD Kumarasamy lost the trust vote by 100-107 in the house (held on 23
July 2019) and resigned.
● Afterwards on 26 July 2019, B.S. Yeddiyurapa took oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka once
again.
Major Dams
● Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) Dam: KRS built across the Kaveri River in Mysore is one of the famous
dams in Karnataka. It was constructed by Sir M.Visveswaraya in1924.
● Tungabhadra Dam: Tungabhadra Dam is considered as the biggest dam in Karnataka. This multi-
purpose dam is built across Tungabhadra River in Hospet.
● Vani Vilasa Sagara: Vani Vilasa Sagara is the oldest dam in Karnataka. It is situated in Chitradurga
and built across the River Vedavathi during pre-independence age.
● Supa Dam: Supa Dam in North Karnataka is constructed across Kali River.
● Almatti Dam: Almatti Dam was built as a part of hydroelectric project and Upper Krishna Irrigation
Project. It is built across Krishna River in North Karnataka.
● Hemavati Dam: Hemavati Dam in Hassan was constructed in 1979 and is built over Hemavati River, a
tributary of River Kaveri.
General Facts
● Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangha (KKGSS) in Bengeri in Hubli, is the only
unit in India that is authorized to manufacture and supply the Flag of India.
● Karnataka accounts for 59 % of total Coffee production and 47 % of ragi production.
● The state accounts for 85 % of raw silk produced in the country.
● Gersoppa (Jog Falls) is world famous and is the second highest plunge waterfall of India.
Tallest plunge waterfall of India is Nohkalikai Falls (335 mt) in Meghalaya.
● Karnataka is the manufacturing hub for some of the largest public sector industries in India,
including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, National Aerospace Laboratories, Bharat

Research Organisation, Central Power Research Institute, Bharat Electronics Limited
and the Central Food Technological Research Institute, are also headquartered in

Western Ghats (Shared Site): 2012The Western Ghats, also known as the Sahyadri Mountains, a mountain range along the
western side of India and one of the world's ten "Hottest biodiversity hotspots". A total of

designated as World Heritage Sites – twenty in the state of Kerala, ten in Karnataka, five in
Tamil Nadu and four in Maharashtra.
