Riding season weather is changing and cooler weather is on the way. Make sure when you leave in the morning and it is 70 degrees out to plan ahead and take some gear with you in case the temperature starts dropping, as it can here in Kansas. Thank you to all that helped with the MDA fundraiser last month. We raised around $1400 for MDA. We all need to do some more planning for next year so that we can raise more money for MDA. Speaking of MDA, Hillary Clark came out from the MDA office in Kansas City for tonight’s meeting and gave us a presentation on MDA funds and a short talk about how the funds are used. We also presented her with another check for $500 that came from the Eagle Riders group that was meant for our fundraiser last month. We did agree as a group to help City Cycle Sales this month with their Harley-Davidson open house on September 25 and 27. We are responsible for set up, cooking, serving, and clean up. City Cycle Sales will provide all of the food and condiments and we will get to keep the proceeds. It was decided by the group that half would be retained by the Chapter and the other half donated to a cause to be determined later. One suggestion was to put the money towards our annual Toy Run. More info to come. One more reminder, please think about serving as one of our officers for the 2015 year. If you have any questions or would like more information on being an officer let me know or you can contact Karen or Sue. There have been some great rides this year and still time to get some more in so keep checking you email. Saddle up, let’s ride. The September meeting of the Junction City Hog Chapter was called to order at 7:00 pm on September 8, 2014, by Director Mike Rhodes. A moment of silence was observed, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Birthdays reported were Ray Evans on the 4th, Marcus Hammond on the 11th, Robin Schmidt on the 14th, and Orin Auld on the 15th. One anniversary was reported for Orin and Deb Auld, who will celebrate their 36th on the 9th. Correspondence included the National POW Recognition Day on Sept. 19; Combat Vets Dice Run on Sept. 27; Cannonball Run this Thursday, the 9th;

and a Punch Run for Veteran’s Headstone on Oct. 4.Under old business, Director Rhodes thanked all who helped with the City Cycle Sales Kawasaki open house, and the MDA activities. He also reported that the form had been sent into National HOG for our proposed name change.Hillary Clark, MDA representative from the Kansas City office, was present for the meeting tonight and showed the current MDA mission video. She thanked the chapter for all of the work that went into the fundraisers and gave numerous examples of what the money helps with. Director Rhodes also announced at this time that a check had been sent to the chapter for $500 from the Eagle Riders.Under new business, Director Rhodes asked for volunteers to be on a nominating committee to come up with the 2015 officer slate. Karen Connell volunteered to help with this and get at least one more person to help her. The list will be presented at the October meeting, with voting at the November meeting.City Cycle Sales is having a Harley-Davidson open house Thursday, Sept. 25, 4-6 pm, and Saturday, Sept. 27, 11 am-1 pm. Volunteers are needed to grill and serve similar to the Kawasaki open house held in July. Orin Auld moved that the chapter do the supper as a fundraiser again, half to the chapter, and half to be determined. Carol Ebersole seconded, and the motion passed. Vonda Copeland suggested that Honey’s holiday toy drive be considered as the fundraiser recipient. The Cannonball Run is this Thursday. Volunteers have been notified of when to show up to help and will be able to eat free. Several of the members present have looked at the bikes online and encourage everyone to come and check them out even if you don’t have time to volunteer.Officer reports:Director Mike Rhodes: Make sure to pay attention to the weather this time of year as it can change quickly and you don’t want to be caught unprepared. He also asked that we make an effort to support the Salina HOG Chapter, the Combat Vets, and the Eagle Riders, as they have all supported us. Several of them have events coming up. The Salina HOG Chapter MDA poker run is Sept. 21.Assistant Director Deb Auld: absentSecretary Vonda Copeland: no reportTreasurer Karen Connell: Account balances were reported.Editor Wanda Allen: absentRoad Captain Frank Gonzales: absent, but it was reported that there was a ride Saturday to the Kansas City Factory tour (with beautiful weather), and a “preview” ride to Woodbine to check out the German restaurant there. Ladies of Harley Sue Gwaltney: In her absence, Claudia reported on the three dinner rides this past month, Early Edition in Manhattan, with a near-record attendance; Nelson’s Landing in Leonardville; Umi’s Japanese Steakhouse in Manhattan. Pictures of these are on the chapter Facebook page. There will hopefully be a couple more dinner rides planned, although they will most likely be short, local trips due to the timing of sunset.Photographer Deb Auld: absentMembership Vonda Copeland: We are at 182 members, there have been lots of new bike sale members added.Webmaster Orin Auld: The annual Auld chili supper will be Saturday, October 4, at 5 pm, rain or shine!Historian Janet Young: absentThe door prize went to Dan Jones. 50/50 found the chapter splitting $33 with winner Ray Evans (Happy Birthday!) There were three Bozo nominations: Kevin Connell nominated Claudia Perry for following the wrong guy on a group ride. Claudia Perry nominated Frank Gonzales for questionable directions on the same ride. Claudia also nominated Linda Rush for leaving her phone at the Harley shop the day of the MDA activities. Bozo went to Claudia, however, Carol Ebersole stepped up as foster mom for the month due to extenuating circumstances at the end of the meeting . . .The meeting was adjourned, and the next meeting will be held October 13, 2014.

Air filters. How long do they last? It can vary depending on a few factors like how hard you ride. The harder you make the motor work, the messier the filter will get.The engine crank case is vented into the air box so more oil will end up on the air filter when working harder. When the RPM’s are kept high, a lot more air and dirt will pass onto the filter getting it dirtier faster than at low RPM.Around this area, we see a stock filter usually lasts about 10k and if you have a washable filter, cleaning is done every 5k. It is not a good idea to try to wash out a stock filter. It’s made of a paper that doesn’t do well

with cleaner and water on it.Even the washable filters don’t last forever. They can start to tear apart after so many cleanings so look close at not only the filter element but the rubber seal around it for damage.New filters are cheaper than new motors.

Posted on July 11, 2013. See more of Jeff’s blog at http://jmadog.wordpress.com/Just like the wash hanging on the clothesline snapping and flapping in the breeze, a biker gets restless waiting to jump on the bike and go. Straining against those small wooden clothes pins just waiting for them to give way and set that pair of your favorite, faded old jeans free from what’s holding them back, dry or not, they’re gone. Whether it’s a weekend ride or a week-long trip, the closer it gets, the harder it is to contain the excitement. Who needs dry jeans anyway? Lets go! And “go” we do. Near and far – wherever the wind blows us. This time of year when the weather is a little more predictable, we gas up the old bike and load it down with whatever we think is necessary, just to feel that road through the seat of our

pants.Where do we go when that day comes to ride? I know we all have dreams of where we want to go, and for some of us those dreams will come true when we hit the road. For others, we settle for that ride to somewhere, or anywhere that gets us out of here. It doesn’t take much to make any biker happy, but just knowing there is a possibility of some road-time in my future starts the motor running inside of me. The closer I get to leaving, the higher that motor revs as anticipation is a powerful thing. That leads to the bigger question here – Is it the ride or the anticipation of the ride that cranks you up? I enjoy that anticipation as much as anyone but once I get on the road I realize that the ride is what it’s all about. When the day comes to leave there isn’t enough clothes pins to hold me back, even though the days leading up to my departure had me feeling like I was being held against my will; those jeans are finally dry!We all have our reasons for when we leave and where we go, and in the end it doesn’t matter to the masses what those reasons are, as long as your laundry is done. Get excited this year and ride somewhere you’ve never been on your motorcycle. Go where you’ve always dreamed of going and don’t let anything hold you back. Those little things that hold you back are usually no bigger than a clothes pin anyway, so just go. You’ll be glad you did.

Editor’s note: As editor, I am always looking for ways to add something of interest to the monthly newsletter. Deb Auld is not only the photographer for our HOG Chapter but she has an amazing body ofwork of photos she has taken as she moves through her daily life. Always looking for the the best shot, best lighting, best subject . . . I have enjoyed seeing Deb’s photographs over the last few years and asked her to consider submitting a favorite photo each month and this is what she shared with me.
