Judge's GuidelinesAs a judge you symbolize the entire program of 4-H dog training.
It is vitally important that judges understand their responsibility to promote the purpose and objec-tives of the 4-H Dog Care and Training Project. The objectives are to help 4-H’ers:
• Developleadership,initiative,self-reliance,sportsmanship,andotherdesirabletraitsofcharacter.• Experiencetheprideandresponsibilityofbeinginvolvedwithadog.• Acquireskill,patienceandunderstandingbytrainingadog.• Realizeagreaterloveforanimalsandahumaneattitudetowardthem.• Prepareforcitizenshipresponsibilitiesbyworkingtogetheringroupsandsupportingcommunity
dog projects and activities.Asajudge,youhavebeengiventheauthorityandtheopportunitytomakeavaluedcontributionto
theprogram.Themannerbywhichjudgesexercisetheirauthorityhasadirectimpactontheprogram.The maintenance of high standards and the respect for 4-H dog training by others is largely the respon-sibilityofthejudge.Thequalityofperformanceisdirectlyrelatedtothequalityofjudging.Thus,theseinfluencesmustalwaysbekeptuppermostinthejudge’smindandactions.
Becauseoftheauthoritypositionthejudgeoccupies,he/shemust:• Beimpartial.Donotmakeconcessionstoonecompetitorunlessthoseconcessionswillbeextend-
ed to all.• Befriendlyandcourteouswhileremainingunprejudicedandfirminyourdecisions.• Youcanbesympathetictowardsomeunexpectedfailureprovidedthatdecisionsandscoringare
not affected.• Expecteach4-H’ertoentertheringpreparedtoperformallexercisesandjudgetheparticipant
accordingly.• Beaprofessionalintheringby: • beingconfident, • knowingtheregulationsandguidelines, • scoringrealisticallyandfairlyaccordingtotheregulations, • scoringeverydogandhandleragainstthetheoretically“perfectperformance”ratherthanother
participants,and • keepingyourvoiceatanappropriatevolume,neithertooloudnortoosoft.• Giveeveryhandleranddogequaltimeandopportunitytocompete.•Actasadiplomat,arbiter,andladyorgentlemanatalltimes.•Bedignifiedindressandactions,rememberingthefocusisthe4-H’erandthedog•Bewillingtodiscussthescoringawarded,butrefrainfromengaginginanargument.
Other Judge Responsibilities:1. To the 4-H’er and their Dog: Give the beginning classes in Showmanship and Pre-Novice obedi-
ence as much courtesy and attention as the more accomplished classes. 2. To the Show and its Sponsors
a. Chairman:Confirmyourjudgingassignmentbeforetheshowwiththechairmanorpersonresponsibleforrequestingyourservices.Whenyouarrive,checkinwiththeshowchair.Checktoseeiftherearespecialrulesorcircumstancesthataredifferentthanusual.Reviewthescoring

sheet that will be used. b. Spectators:Sincetherewillbeparents,relativesandfriendswatchingtheshowwhodonot
knowtherules,itisimportantforthejudgetoavoidanyactionsthatmightdegradethe4-H’erorthedog.Remember,spectatorsformvirtuallytheirentireopinionofthe4-HDogCareandTrainingProjectbasedontheactionsofthejudge,the4-H’erandthedog.
c. Scoring and Determining Penalty Points:Anyactionorinactiononthepartofthehandlerorthe dog that results in the display less than that of a theoretically perfect performance should be penalized.A“minor”penaltyisconsideredtobeadeductionoflessthantwopoints.(Nopenaltyoflessthanone-halfpointshouldbecharged).A“major”orsubstantialpenaltyisconsideredtobea deduction of two points or more. There is no published list of reasonable and customary penalty pointsforthevariousfaultsanderrors,sotherearesomevariationsinthescoringsystemsofin-dividualjudges.BecauseDogShowmanshipisalldoneonashowlead,practicallyall4-H'erswillhave enough control of their dogs to complete a Showmanship class. The Kansas 4-H Dog Show Rule Bookspecificallyidentifiestheprincipalpartsthejudgewillobservewhilethe4-H'eranddogworkasateam.Themovementpatternsdefinedintherulebookshouldbeusedsoeachteamwillbeabletopracticethembeforebeingjudged.(Nootherpatternsshouldbeusedthatmightconfuseahandler.)Obediencejudgingismorecomplexbecauseoftheprogressivelymoredifficultclasses.However,individualexercisesaredefinedintoprincipleparts.Inmostcasesthequalifyingportionofthescoresheetwillbeassessedwith“minor”penaltiesandthenon-qualifyingportionwillbescoredwith“major”penaltiesuptothelossofallthepoints.Withtimeandexperienceyouwillbeabletodevelopasystemwhichdefineshowmanypenaltypointsareappropriateforanygiven fault.
Helpful hints: • Wearcomfortableshoes.(Youmaybeonyourfeetforfourtoeighthours)• Golightlyoncolognesorperfumes.• Gettotheshowsiteearly,atleast30minutesbeforejudgingisscheduledtobegin.• Checktheringset-up.Determineifspecialequipmentwillbeneededduringtheshow.Ifitis
needed,checktoseewhereitis.• Meettheringstewards.Writetheirnamesdownandusethem.Acknowledgetheirassistance
sometime during the show.• Arrangetheshowmanshipdogsbysizeifpossible.Generally,largerdogsaresentintotheringfirst.• Bringyourownjudgingequipmentandsupplies—clipboard,sharpenedpencils,enoughscore
sheetsforthefirstclassandcopiesthatcanbeduplicatedfortheotherclasses,stop-watch,6-footfoldingrulerortapemeasure,chalk,amarkingdeviceforscratchingmarksindirtrings,towelettesorsimilaritemswithwhichtocleanyourhandsifnecessary,calculator,tongstoholdretrievingitemsforscentexercises,acopyoftheKansas 4-H Dog Show Rule Book (S46), Kansas 4-H Dog Show Judge’s Guidelines(S82), Kansas 4-H Agility Dog Show Rule Book (S124), and Kansas 4-H Rally Obedience Rule Book (4H965).
Showmanship(Showmanshipisbasedona100-pointscale)
1. Fitting of the Dog —30pointsThejudgewillevaluateeachdogindividuallyforgrooming.Thehairandcoatshouldbeclean,
smooth,notscalyormattedandfreefromloosehair.Thejudgewillbearinmindthatlong-haireddogswill be losing their coats during the summer. If it is apparent that the 4-H’er has made an attempt to

eliminatetheloosehair,thejudgewillscorethedogaccordingly.Thejudgewillcheckforparasites.Ifparasitesarepresent,thedog’sscoreshouldbepenalized.Earsshouldbefreeofdirt,parasitesandex-cessivehair.Eyesshouldbecleanandfreeofmatter.Toenailsshouldbecutsoasnottotouchthefloor.Teethshouldbefreefrommatterandfreeofstaining,asappropriatefortheageofthedog.No dog should be judged on its conformation.2. Showmanship of Handler —35points
a. Appearance of handler — The 4-H’er should present a well groomed appearance. The dress is op-tionalbutshouldlookneatandclean.Iftheshowhasadresscode,the4-H’ershouldcomplywithregulations. Dress should not be a major consideration in scoring this category.
b. Grace and ease of showing —Thisisevidentinthemannerthe4-H’ermoveshis/herdog,movesaroundhis/herdogandthemethodbywhichthedogisstacked.Theturnsshouldbesmooth,andthe gait of the dog should not be unduly impaired. The 4-H’er should not step across the dog. The 4-H’er should avoid getting between the dog and the judge. The 4-H’er should be sure that the dogisstackedatanytimeitisnotmoving.Thisshouldbedonequicklyanddiscreetly.The4-H’ershould display enthusiasm and enjoyment while in the ring.
c. Avoids getting in awkward and unsightly positions — The 4-H’er should maintain his/her bal-ance.Whenmakingaturn,the4-H’ershouldnothavetostepacrossthedog.The4-H’erwillwatchthejudgeinsuchamannertoknowwherethejudgeis,butnottothepointofawkward-ness.The4-H’er,whenreturningtothejudge,shouldstopanappropriatedistanceawayuponjudge'srequest.Whenshowingthedogthe4-H’ershouldavoidreachingacrossthedogifitwillinterferewiththejudge’sview.Thehandlershouldexhibitgoodfootworkanduseverbalcom-mands and/or subtle signals with hands or feet to assist the dog in maneuvering or posing.
d. Easy and smooth movement — The handler should handle the lead smoothly and should not havetokeepthedog“strungup”tightly.Whenpassingtheleadfromonehandtotheother,itshouldbedonegracefully.Whenthehandlerfindsitnecessarytoreadjustthedog'scoator“stack-ingpose,”thisshouldbedonesoastonotappearas“divingatthedog.”
e. Sportsmanship —Thehandlershouldbepenalizedforcrowdingorinterferingwithanotherteam.f. Knowledge about dog's care, condition, and problems — The 4-Her should be able to respond to
anyquestionthejudgeasksaboutthedog'scare,condition,orobviousproblemsandhealth.3. Coordination Between Handler and Dog — 35 points
a. Dog’s reaction to handler —The4-H’eranddogshouldmoveasateam.Thedogshouldnotforge or lag. The show lead should not be taut as evidence of having to control the dog. The dog shouldnotsitwhencomingtoahalt.Thedogshouldnotexhibitaggressivebehaviortowardthehandlerorjudge.Whenstackedthedogdoesnotchangepositionsunlessthe4-H’errequiresitto.
b. General communication between dog and handler —Thiscanbedoneondifferentlevels.The4-H’er may verbally encourage the dog. The dog may watch the 4-H’er closely. The dog should dis-playanenthusiasmwhilebeingshown.Leadjerkingorpullingwhilemovingispenalized.Duringallphasesofhandling,thehandler'sconcentrationshouldbeonthedogandnotonthejudge,butnottotheextentthathe/sheisunawareofwhatisgoingoninthering.
c. Straight, smooth and even gait —Thegaitofboththe4-H’erandthedogshouldbeevenandconstant.Thepaceandstrideofthe4-H’ershouldbeappropriateforthesizeofthedog.
d. Works as a team —Theyshouldmovetogethersmoothlyandeffortlesslymakingsmoothcornersandturns.Again,thehandlershouldassistthedogbygivinganynecessaryverbalcommandsand/or subtle signals with hands or feet to help the dog to maneuver smoothly.

ObedienceGeneral Guidelines(SeeAppendixAforclassesandpointtotals)
Heel Position —TheHeelposition,whetherthedogissitting,standing,lyingdown,ormovingatheel,meansthatthedogshallbestraightinlinewiththedirectioninwhichthehandlerisfacing,atthehandler’sleftside,andascloseaspracticabletothehandler’sleftlegwithoutcrowding,permittingthehandler freedom of motion at all times. The area from the dog’s head to shoulder shall be in line with the handler’s left hip.
Hands —Inallexercisesinwhichthedogisrequiredtoheelfree,oneoftheoptionsbelowshallbefollowed:(1)thehandler’sarmsandhandsshallmovenaturallyatthehandler’ssideswhileinmotion;or(2)therighthandandarmmustmovenaturally,whilethelefthandshallbeheldagainst,andcenteredinthefrontofthebody,intheareaofthewaist.Theleftforearmshallbecarried,asmuchaspossible,against the body.
Ineitheroftheabovesituationsthehandsandarmsmaybeadjustedduringthe“Fast”portionofanexercisetomaintainbalance.
Theremaybeadeductionifthehandsandarmsare,intheopinionofthejudge,beingusedasasecond command or signal.
Inallexercisesinwhichthedogisrequiredtocometoorreturntothehandlerandsitinfront,thehandler’s arms and hands shall hang naturally at their sides while the dog is coming in and until the dog hassatinfront.Adeductionshallbemadeifahandler’sarmsandhandsareusedasasecondcommandorsignalduringtheexercise.
Commands and Signals —Acommandisaverbaldirectionforthedog.Asignalisasinglegesturewith one arm and hand only.
Signalingcorrectiontoadogisforbiddenandmustbepenalized.Inaddition,asecondcommandisforbiddenandmustbepenalized.
Thedog’sname,whengivenimmediatelybeforeaverbalcommand,shallnotbeconsideredasanad-ditional command. The name shall not be used with any signal not given simultaneously with a verbal command.
Thedogshouldneveranticipatethehandler’sdirection,butmustwaitfortheappropriatecommandsand/orsignals.Movingforwardattheheelwithoutanycommandorsignalotherthanthenaturalfor-wardmovementofthehandler’sbody,shallnotbeconsideredasanticipation.
Commandswhich,inthejudge’sopinion,areexcessivelyloudmaybepenalized.Additional Commands or Signals —Ifahandlergivesanadditionalcommandorsignal,eitherwhen
nocommandorsignalispermitted,orsimultaneouslywithorfollowingapermittedcommandorsignal,orusesthedog’snamewithapermittedsignalbutwithoutapermittedcommand,adeductionismade.If a double command is given, the dog will be scored less than 50 percent of the total for that exercise.
Praise —Praiseandpettingareallowedbetweenandafterexercises,butpointsmaybedeductedfromthetotalscoreforadogthatisnotunderreasonablecontrolwhilebeingpraised.Ahandlershallnot carry or offer food in the ring.
Misbehavior —Anydisplayoffearornervousnessbythedog,oranyuncontrolledbehaviorsuchassnapping,barking,orrunningaway–whetheritoccursduringanexercise,betweenexercises,orbeforeorafterjudging–mustbepenalizedaccordingtotheseriousnessofthemisbehavior.Thejudgemayexpelorexcusethedogfromfurthercompetitionintheclass.

Anydogthatrelievesitselfatanytimewhileintheringforjudgingwillreceiveanautomaticwhiteribbon.However,thedogmaycontinuetobescored.
Training and Disciplining in the Ring —Thejudgeshallnotpermitanyhandlertotrainthedogbyexcessiveverbalcommandsorbymovingtowardthedogtocorrectitinanyway,nortopracticeanyexerciseintheringeitherbeforeoraftertheyarejudged.Adogwhosehandlerdisciplinesitinaninap-propriatemannerintheringshallbeexcusedandwillnotbefurtherscoredinthatclass.
Ifadoghasfailedtocompleteanexercise,thejudgemaypermitthe4-H’eranotherattempt.However,thesecondattemptshouldnotbetreatedasasuccessfulattempt.The4-H’ershouldnotreceiveaqualifyingscorebasedonthesecondattempt.Heel on Leash and Figure Eight —ThisexerciseisapartoftheNoviceclass.HeelonLeashisanexer-ciseintheGraduateNoviceclass.Beforestartinganyexercisethejudgewillask,“Areyouready?”
Theprincipalfeatureofthisexerciseistheabilityofthedogandhandlertoworkasateam.Ordersfortheexerciseare“Forward,”“Halt,”Rightturn,”“Leftturn,”“Aboutturn,”“Slow,”“Normal”and“Fast.”“Fast”signifiesthatthehandlermustnoticeablyacceleratefromtheirnormalpace,enoughsoastochangethepaceofthedog.Inexecutingthe“Aboutturn,”thehandlerwillalwaysdoarightaboutturn.Ordersfor“Halt”andturnswillbegivenonlywhenthehandlerismovingata“Normal”speed.
Theordersmaybegiveninanysequenceandmayberepeatedasnecessary,butthejudgeshallat-tempttostandardizetheheelingpatternforalldogsinanyclass.
Theleashmaybeheldineitherhandorinbothhands,providingthehandsareinanaturalposi-tion.However,anytighteningorjerkingoftheleashoranyact,signal,orcommandwhich,inthejudge’sopinion,givesthedogassistance,shallbepenalized.
The handler shall enter the ring with the dog on a loose leash and stand with the dog sitting in the heelposition.Thejudgeshallaskifthehandlerisreadybeforegivingtheorder,“Forward.”Thehandlermaygiveacommandorsignaltoheel,andwalkbrisklyandinanaturalmannerwiththedogonalooseleash.Thedogshallwalkclosetotheleftsideofthehandlerwithoutswingingwide,lagging,forging,orcrowding.Whetherheelingorsitting,thedogmustnotinterferewithhandler’sfreedomofmotionatanytime.Ateachordertohalt,thehandlerwillstopandthedogshallsitstraightandpromptlyintheheelpositionwithoutcommandorsignal,andshallnotmoveuntilthehandleragainmovesforwardonorderfromthejudge.Itispermissibleaftereachhalt,beforemovingagain,forthehandlertogiveacommandorsignaltoheel.Thejudgeshallsay,“Exercisefinished”afterthisportionoftheexercise.
BeforestartingtheFigureEight,thejudgeshallaskifthehandlerisready.Thehandleranddog,fromastartingpositionaboutequidistantfromthetwostewardsandfacingthejudge,shallbrisklywalktwicecompletelyaroundandbetweenthetwostewards,whoshallstand8feetapart.TheFigureEightin the novice classes shall be done on leash. The handler may choose to go in either direction. There shall beno“Aboutturn,”or“Fast,”or“Slow”intheFigureEight,butthejudgemustorderatleastone“Halt”duringandanother“Halt”attheendofthisportionoftheexercise.
Heel on Leash and Figure Eight Scoring —Ifadogisunmanageable,oritshandlerconstantlycontrolsitsperformancebytuggingtheleashoradaptspacetothatofthedog,adeductionismade.
Deductions shall be made for additional commands or signals to heel and for failure of dog or han-dlertonoticeablyacceleratespeedforwardduring“Fast”andnoticeablydeceleratespeedforwarddur-ing“Slow.”Deductionsaremadeforsuchthingsaslagging,heelingwide,forging,crowding,poorsits,handlerfailingtowalkatabriskpace,occasionalguidancewithleash,andotherheelingimperfections.
Inscoringthisexercisethejudgeshallaccompanythehandleratadiscreetdistancesothathe/shecan observe any signals or commands given by the handler to the dog. The judge must do so without interfering with either dog or handler.

Stand for Examination —ThisexerciseisapartoftheNoviceandGraduateNoviceclasses.Theprincipalfeaturesofthisexercisearethatthedogstandinpositionbeforeandduringtheexami-
nation,andthatthedogdisplayneithershynessnorresentment.Ordersare,“Standyourdogandleavewhenyouareready,”“Backtoyourdog,”and“Exercisefin-
ished.”Therewillbenofurthercommandfromthejudgetothehandlertoleavethedog.Onjudge’sorder,thehandlershallremovetheleashandgiveittoastewardwhoshallplaceitonthe
judge’s table or other designated place.Thehandlerwilltakethedogtotheplaceindicatedbythejudge,andonjudge’sorder,thehandler
willstandand/orposethedogoffleashbythemethodofhis/herchoice,takinganyreasonabletimetoposethedogasintheshowring.Whenready,thehandlerwillstandwiththedogintheheelposition,andgiveacommandand/orsignaltothedogtostay,walkforwardabout6feetinfrontofthedog,turnaround and stand facing the dog.
Thejudgeshallapproachthedogfromthefront,andshalltouchonlythedog’shead,body,andhind-quarters,usingthefingersandpalmofonehandonly.Ontheorder,“Backtoyourdog,”thehandlershallwalkaroundbehindthedogandreturntotheheelposition.Thedogmustremainstandinguntilafterthejudgehassaid,“Exercisefinished.”
Stand for Examination Scoring —Scoringofthisexercisewillnotstartuntilthehandlerhasgiventhecommandand/orsignaltostay,exceptforsuchthingsasroughtreatmentofthedogbyitshandleroractiveresistancebythedogtothehandler’sattemptstomakeitstand.Eitheroftheseshallbepenalized.
Adogshallreceiveadeductionifitdisplaysshynessorresentment,growlsorsnapsatanytime,sitsorliesdownbeforeorduringtheexamination,ormovesawayfromtheplacewhereitwaslefteitherbeforeorduringtheexamination.Ifdeductionsaremadeforthereasonsstatedabove,thedogshallnotreceiveaqualifyingscore.
Minororsubstantialdeductions,dependingonthecircumstance,shallbemadeforadogthatmovesitsfeetatanytimeorsitsormovesawayaftertheexaminationhasbeencompleted.Heel Off Leash, Performance and Scoring —ThisexerciseispartoftheNovice,GraduateNovice,OpenAandOpenBclasses.
ThisexerciseshallbeexecutedinthesamemannerasHeelonLeashexceptthatthedogshallbeoffleash.Ordersandscoringalsoshallbethesame.Thisexerciseisusedforrun-offswhentiescoresoccur.Inthecaseofatie,holdarun-offutilizingtheHeelOffLeashexercise,oneteamatatime,withsamepattern.Recall —ThisexerciseisapartoftheNoviceclass.
Theprincipalfeaturesofthisexercisearethatthedogstaywhereleftuntilcalledbyitshandler,andthatthedogrespondpromptlytothehandler’scommandorsignalto“Come.”
Ordersare:“Leaveyourdog,”“Callyourdog,”and“Finish.”Onorderfromthejudge,thehandlermaycommandand/orsignalthedogtostayinthesitposition
whilethehandlerwalksforwardabout35feettotheotherendofthering,wherehe/sheshallturnandstandinanaturalmannerfacingthedog.Onjudge’sorderorsignal,thehandlerwillgivecommandorsignalforthedogtocome.Thedogshouldcomedirectlyinandsitstraight,centeredimmediatelyinfrontofthehandler’sfeet,closeenoughthatthehandlercouldreadilytouchitsheadwithoutmovingeitherfootorhavingtostretchforward.Thedogshouldnottouchthehandlerorsitbetweenthehandler'sfeet.
Onjudge’sorderthehandlerwillgiveacommandorasignaltofinish,andthedogmustgosmartlytotheheelpositionandsit.Themannerinwhichthedogfinishesisoptional,provideditispromptandthe dog sits straight at heel.

Recall Scoring —Adogmustreceiveadeductionandanon-qualifyingscoreforthefollowing:requiringadditionalcommandorsignaltostay,failuretocomeonthefirstcommandorsignal,movingfromtheplacewhereleftbeforebeingcalledorsignaled,stoppingpriortoreachingthehandler.
Deductionsshallbemadeforaslowresponsetocome,varyingwiththeextentoftheslowness;fail-ureofthedogtocomeatasatisfactorypace;standingorlyingdowninsteadofwaitinginthesitposi-tion;failuretositinfront;failuretofinishorsitatheel;orforextracommandorsignaltositorfinish.
Minortosubstantialdeductionsshallbemadedependingonthespecificcircumstancesineachcasefor failure to come directly to the handler.
Minordeductionsshallbemadeforsloworpoorsitsorfinisheswhicharenotpromptorsmart,fortouchingthehandleroncominginorwhenfinishing,orsittingbetweenthehandler’sfeet.Group Exercises: Novice and Pre-novice
Theprincipalfeatureoftheseexercisesisthatthedogremaininthesittingordownposition,which-everisrequiredbytheparticularexercise.
Ordersare“Sityourdogs”or“Downyourdogs,”“Leaveyourdogs,”and“Backtoyourdogs.”Competingdogsintheclasstaketheseexercisestogether,exceptthatifthereare12ormoredogs
theyshall,atthejudge’soption,bejudgedingroupsofnotlessthansixnormorethan12dogs.WhenthesamejudgedoesbothNoviceAandNoviceB,thetwoclassesmaybecombinediftherearenotmorethan12dogscompetinginthecombinedclass.Thejudgeshalldividetheclassintoapproximatelyequalsections.Thegroupexercisesshallbejudgedaftereachsection.Thedogsthatareintheringshallbelinedupincatalogorderalongoneofthefoursidesofthering.Handler’sarmbands,weightedwithleashesorotherarticlesifnecessary,shallbeplacedbehindthedogs.
FortheLongSitthehandlersshall,onorderfromthejudge,commandand/orsignaltheirdogstositiftheyarenotalreadysitting.Onfurtherorderfromthejudgetoleavetheirdogs,thehandlersshallgive a command and/or signal to stay and immediately leave their dogs. The handlers will go to the op-positesideofthering,turnandstandfacingtheirrespectivedogs.(InPre-Novice,thehandlerwillgotothe end of the lead).
Ifadoggetsupandstartstoroamorfollowsitshandler,orifadogmovessoastointerferewithanotherdog,thejudgeshallpromptlyinstructthehandleroroneofthestewardstotakethedogoutoftheringortokeepitawayfromtheotherdogs.
Afteroneminutefromthetimethejudgehasorderedthehandlerstoleavetheirdogs,thejudgewillgivetheordertoreturn,whereuponthehandlersmustpromptlygobacktotheirdogs,eachwalkingaroundandinbackoftheirdogtotheheelposition.Thedogsmustnotmovefromthesittingpositionuntilafterthejudgehassaid,“Exercisefinished.”Thejudgeshallnotgivetheorder“Exercisefinished”until the handlers have returned to the heel position.
BeforestartingtheLongDownthejudgeshallaskifthehandlersareready.TheLongDownisdoneinthesamemannerastheLongSitexceptthatinsteadofsittingtheirdogsthehandlersshall,onorderfromthejudge,downtheirdogstoapositionfacingtheoppositesideofthering,andthejudgewillorder the handlers to return after three minutes. The dogs should not move from the down position until afterthejudgehassaid,“Exercisefinished.”
ThedogsshallnotberequiredtositattheendoftheDownexercise.Group Exercise Novice and Pre-Novice Scoring —Duringtheseexercisesthejudgeshallstandin
such a position that all dogs and handlers are in his/her line of vision without having to turn around. The judgemayrequeststewardstoassistintimingandwatchingthedogs.

Scoringoftheexerciseswillnotstartuntilafterthejudgehasorderedthehandlerstoleavetheirdogs,exceptforsuchthingsasroughtreatmentofadogbyitshandlerorresistancebyadogtoitshandler’sat-temptstomakeitsitorliedown.Thesemaybepenalized.Inextremecasesthedogmaybeexcused.
Thedogshouldnothavetobeforcedintopositionafterreceivingthehandler'scommandand/orsignaltositordown.Theteamshouldbepenalizedwithaminordeductionif,inthejudge'sopinion,thedog was forced or placed into position.
Ascoreofzeroshouldbegivenifthedogdoesnotremaininplaceorgoestoanotherdog.Theterm“Didnotremaininplace”coverssuchbehaviorasscooting,crawling,orrollingmorethanadistanceofone body length from the place where it was left by the handler.
Apenaltyofmorethan50percentofavailablepointsisassessedifthedogstandsorliesdownontheLongSit,standsorsitsontheLongDown,orrepeatedlywhinesorbarksduringeitheroftheexercises.Thesepenaltiesshouldapplythroughouttheexerciseandwhilethehandlerisreturningtothedog.
Minordeductionswillbegivenifthedogbreaksthepositionitwasleftinafterthehandlerreturnstoheelpositionandbeforethejudgesays,“ExerciseFinished.”Drop on Recall—ThisexerciseisapartoftheGraduateNovice,OpenAandOpenBclasses.
Theprincipalfeaturesofthisexercise,inadditiontothoselistedundertheNoviceRecall,arethedog’spromptresponsetothehandler’scommandorsignaltodrop,andthedog’sremaininginthedownposition until called or signalled to come. The dog will be judged on the promptness of its response to commandorsignalandnotonitsproximitytoadesignatedpoint.

Onorderfromthejudge,thehandlermaycommandand/orsignalthedogtostayinthesitposi-tionwhilethehandlerwalksforwardabout35feettotheotherendofthering,wherehe/sheturnsandstandsinanaturalmannerfacingthedog.Onjudge’sorderorsignal,thehandlershallcommandorsignaltocome,andthedogmuststartdirectlytowardthehandler.Onthejudge’sarmorhandsignalorpredeterminedlocation,thehandlershallgivethecommandorsignaltodrop,andthedogmustimme-diatelydroptothedownposition,whereitmustremainuntil,onthejudge’sorderorsignal,thehandleragaingivescommandorsignaltocome.ThedogthencompletestheexerciseasintheNoviceRecall.
Drop on Recall Scoring—Deductions,varyingwiththeextent,shallbemadefordelayedorslowresponsetothehandler’scommandorsignaltodrop,delayorslownesstodown,slowresponsetoeitheroftherecallsandanyanticipationofacommandorsignal.PenaltiesasintheNoviceRecallshallapply.Retrieve on Flat —ThisexerciseisapartoftheOpenAandOpenBclasses.
Theprincipalfeatureofthisexerciseisthatthedogretrievepromptly.Ordersare:“Throwit,”“Sendyourdog,”“Takeit,”and“Finish.”The handler shall stand with the dog sitting in the heel position in a place designated by the judge. On
order,“Throwit,”thehandlershallgivecommandand/orsignaltostay,whichsignalmaynotbegivenwiththehandthatisholdingthedumbbell,andthrowthedumbbelladistanceofatleast15feet.Onordertosendthedog,thehandlershallgivecommandorsignaltoretrieve.Theretrieveshallbeexecutedatabrisktrotorgallop,thedoggoingdirectlytothedumbbellandretrievingit,andreturningdirectlytothehan-dlerwithoutunnecessarymouthingorplaying.Thedogmustsitstraighttodeliver,centeredimmediatelyinfrontofthehandler’sfeet,closeenoughthatthehandlercanreadilytakethedumbbellwithoutmovingeither foot or having to stretch forward. The dog must not touch the handler nor sit between his/her feet. Onorderfromthejudgeto“Takeit,”thehandlershallgivecommandorsignalandtakethedumbbell.

Thedumbbell,whichmustbeapprovedbythejudge,shallbemadeofoneormoresolidpiecesofoneoftheheavyhardwoods,orofarigidorsemi-rigid,firm,nontoxic,nonwoodenmaterial,similarinsize,shape,color,andweighttoawoodendumbbell.Dumbbellsshallnotbehollowedout.Metaldumb-bellsarenotpermitted.Itmaybeunfinished,orcoatedwithaclearfinish,orpaintedwhite.Itshallhavenodecorationsorattachmentsbutmaybearaninconspicuousmarkforidentification.Thesizeofthedumbbellshallbeproportionatetothesizeofthedog.Thejudgeshallrequirethedumbbelltobethrownagainbeforethedogissentif,injudge'sopinion,itisthrownlessthan15feet,ortoofartooneside,ortoo close to the ringside.
Retrieve on Flat Scoring —Adogmustbescoredazeroifitfailstogooutonthefirstcommandorsignal,goestoretrievebeforethecommandorsignal,failstoretrieve,ordoesnotreturnwiththedumbbell sufficientlyclosethatthehandlercaneasilytakethedumbbellasdescribedabove.

Thebroadjumpshallconsistoffourhurdles,builttotelescopeforconvenience,madeofboardsabout8incheswide,thelargestmeasuringabout5feetinlengthand6incheshighatthehighestpoint,allpaintedaflatwhite.Whensetuptheyshallbearrangedinorderofsizeandshallbeevenlyspacedsoastocoveradistanceequaltotwicetheheightofthehighjumpassetfortheparticulardog,withthelowside of each hurdle and the lowest hurdle nearest the dog.

Ineachofthesetwoexercisesthedogmustselectbyscentaloneandretrieveanarticlethathasbeenhandledbyitshandler.Thearticlesshallbeprovidedbythehandlerandshallconsistoftwosets,each

comprisedoffiveidenticalobjectsnotmorethansixinchesinlength,whichmaybeitemsofeverydayuse.Onesetshallbemadeentirelyofrigidmetal,andoneofleatherofsuchdesignthatnothingbutleatherisvisibleexceptfortheminimumamountofthreadormetalnecessarytoholdtheobjecttogeth-er.Thearticlesineachsetmustbelegiblynumbered,eachwithadifferentnumberandmustbeapprovedby the judge.
Thehandlershallpresentall10articlestothejudge,whoshalldesignateonefromeachsetandmakewritten note of the numbers of the two articles selected. These two handler’s articles shall be placed on atableorchairwithintheringuntilpickedupbythehandler,whoshallholdinhis/herhandonlyonearticle at a time. The judge or steward will handle each of the remaining eight articles as he/she places themonthefloororgroundatrandomandabout6inchesapart,withtheclosestarticlebeingabout15feetfromthehandlerandthedog.Beforethedogissent,thejudgemustmakesurethatthearticlesarevisibletothedogandhandler,andthatthearticlesareproperlyseparatedsothattherewillbenoconfu-sion of scent between the articles.
Handleranddogshallturnaroundafterwatchingthejudgeorstewardspreadthearticles,andshallremainfacingawayfromthosearticlesuntilthejudgehastakenthehandler’sscentedarticleandgiventheorder,“Sendyourdog.”
Thehandlermayuseeitherarticlefirst,butmustrelinquisheachoneimmediatelywhenorderedbythejudge.Thejudgeshallmakecertainthatthehandlerimpartshis/herscenttoeacharticleonlywithhandsandthat,betweenthetimethehandlerpicksupeacharticleandthetimeitisgiventothejudge,the article is held continuously in the handler’s hands which must remain in plain sight.
Onorderfromthejudge,thehandlerwillimmediatelyplacethearticleonthejudge’sbookorworksheet.Thejudge,withouttouchingthearticlewiththeirhands,willplaceitamongthoseonthegroundor floor.
Onorderfromthejudgeto“sendyourdog,”thehandlermaygivethecommandtoheelandwillturninplace,rightorleft,tofacethearticles,Thehandlerwillcometoahaltwiththedogsittingintheheelposition. The handler shall then give the command or signal to retrieve. The handler may give their scent tothedogbygentlytouchingthedog’snosewiththepalmofoneopenhand,butthismayonlybedonewhilethedogandhandlerhavetheirbackstothearticlesandthearmandhandmustbereturnedtoanatural position before handler and dog turn to face the articles.
Thedogshallgoatabrisktrotorgallopdirectlytothearticles.Itmaytakeanyreasonabletimetoselecttherightarticle,butonlyifitworkscontinuously.AfterpickinguptherightarticlethedogshallreturnatabrisktrotorgallopandcompletetheexerciseasintheRetrieveonFlat.
Theseproceduresshallbefollowedforbotharticles.Shouldadogretrieveawrongarticleinthefirstexercise,thatarticleshallbeplacedonthetableorchair.Thecorrectarticlemustberemoved,andthesecondexerciseshallbeconductedwithonelessarticleonthegroundorfloor.
Scent Discrimination Scoring —DeductionsshallbethesameasintheNoviceRecallandtheRetrieveonFlat.Inaddition,adogthatfailstogotothegroupofarticles,orretrievesawrongarticle,orfailstobringtherightarticletothehandler,mustbescoredzerofortheparticularexercise.
Substantialdeductionsshallbemadeforadogthatpicksupawrongarticle,eventhoughitputsitdownagainimmediately,foranyroughnessbythehandlerinpartingtheirscenttothedog,andforthehandler not turning in place.
Minororsubstantialdeductions,dependingonthecircumstancesineachcase,shallbemadeforadogthatissloworinattentive,thatdoesnotgodirectlytothearticlesorthatdoesnotworkcontinuously,andforanyexcessivemotionsbythehandlerinturningtofacethearticles.Thereshallbenopenaltyforadogthattakesareasonablylongtimeexaminingthearticlesprovidedthedogworkssmartlyandcontinuously.

Directed Retrieve —ThisexerciseisapartoftheUtilityBclass.Theprincipalfeaturesoftheexercisearethatthedogstayuntildirectedtoretrieve,thatitgodi-
rectlytothedesignatedglove,andthatitretrievepromptly.Theordersfortheexerciseare“One,”“Two”or“Three,”“Takeit”and“Finish.”Inthisexercisethehandlerwillprovidethreepredominantlywhite,cottonworkgloves,whichmustbeopenandmustbeapprovedbythejudge.Thehandlerwillstandwiththeirbacktotheunobstructedendoftheringwiththedogsittingintheheelpositionmidwaybetweenand in line with the two jumps. The judge or steward will then drop the three gloves across the end of thering,whilethehandleranddogarefacingtheoppositedirection,onegloveineachcornerandoneinthecenter,about3feetfromtheendoftheringandforthecornergloves,about3feetfromthesideofthering.Allthreegloveswillbeclearlyvisibletothedogandhandler,whenthehandlerturnstofacetheglove designated by the judge. There shall be no table or chair at this end of the ring.
Theglovesshallbedesignated“One,”“Two”or“Three”readingfromlefttorightwhenthehandlerturnsandfacesthegloves.Thejudgewillgivetheorder“One,”or“Two”or“Three.”Thehandlerthenmaygivethecommandtoheelandturninplace,rightorleft,tofacethedesignatedglove.Thehandlerwill come to a halt with the dog sitting in the heel position. The handler shall not touch the dog to get it into position nor reposition the dog. The handler will then give the dog the direction to the designated glovewithasinglemotionofthelefthandandarmalongtherightsideofthedog,andwillgiveaverbalcommand to retrieve either simultaneously with or immediately following the giving of the direction. Thedogshallthengodirectlytothegloveatabrisktrotorgallopandretrieveitwithoutunnecessarymouthingorplayingwithit,completingtheexerciseasintheRetrieveonFlat.
Thehandlermaybendbodyandkneestotheextentnecessaryingivingthedirectiontothedog,afterwhich the handler will stand erect in a natural position with arms at sides.
Theexerciseshallconsistofasingleretrieve.Beforethestartofjudgingthejudgeshallmakethedeci-siontoeitherassigntheglovestodogssothatsuccessivedogsincatalogorderwillhavedifferentgloves,orto assign the gloves as the dog appear in the ring for judging so that two successive dogs do not receive the sameglove.Ineithercaseeachgloveshallbeusedapproximatelythesamenumberoftimes.
Directed Retrieve Scoring —AllapplicablepenaltieslistedundertheNoviceRecallandtheRetrieveonFlatshallapply.Inaddition,ascoreofzeroisrequiredforanycommandsorsignalsbythehandler,afterturning,topositionthedogtofacethedesignatedglove,fornotgoingdirectlytothedes-ignatedglove,orfornotretrievingtheglove.
Dependingontheextent,asubstantialdeductioneventothepointofzeroshallbemadefornotturning in place or not turning to face the designated glove.
Dependingontheextent,aminortosubstantialdeductionshallbemadeforahandlerwhotouchesthedogorusesexcessivemotionswhileturningtofacetheglove.
Dependingontheextent,substantialorminordeductionsshallbemadeforahandlerwhooverturnsortouchesthedogorusesexcessivemotionswhenturningtofacetheglove.Directed Jumping —ThisexerciseisapartoftheUtilityBclass.
Theprincipalfeaturesofthisexercisearethatthedoggoawayfromthehandlerinthedirectionindicated,stopwhencommanded,jumpasdirected,andreturnasintheRecall.
Theordersare“Sendyourdog,”“Bar”or“High,”and“Finish.”Thejumpsshallbeplacedmidwayintheringatrightanglestothesidesand18to20feetapart,the
barjumpononeside,thehighjumpontheother.ThejudgemustmakecertainthejumpsaresetattherequiredheightforeachdogbyfollowingtheproceduredescribedinRetrieveOvertheHighJump.
Thehandler,fromapositiononthecenterlineoftheringandabout20feetfromthelineofthejumps,shallstandwiththedogsittingintheheelpositionandonorderfromthejudgeshallcommand

and/orsignalthedogtogoforwardatabrisktrotorgalloptoapointabout20feetbeyondthejumpsandintheapproximatecenter.Whenthedoghasreachedthispointthehandlershallgiveacommandtosit;thedogmuststopandsitwithattentiononthehandlerbutneednotsitsquarely.
Thejudgewilldesignatewhichjumpistobetakenfirstbythedogandshallordereither“High”or“Bar”whendesignatingeitherthehighorbarjump.Thehandlershallcommandand/orsignalthedogtoreturnafterthedesignatedjump.Whilethedogisinmidairthehandlermayturnsoastobefacingthedogasitreturns.Thedogshallsitinfrontofthehandlerand,onorderfromthejudge,finishasintheNoviceRecall.Thejudgewillsay“ExerciseFinished”afterthedoghasreturnedtotheHeelposition.
Whenthedogisagainsittingintheheelpositionthejudgeshallask,“Areyouready?”beforegivingtheordertosendthedogforthesecondpartoftheexercise.Thesameprocedureshallbefollowedforthe second jump.
Itisoptionalwiththejudgewhichjumpistakenfirst,butbothjumpsmustbetakentocompletetheexerciseandthejudgemustnotdesignatethejumpuntilthedogisatthefarendofthering.Thedogshall clear the jumps without touching them.
TheheightofthejumpsshallbethesameasrequiredintheOpenclasses.ThehighjumpshallbethesameasthatusedintheOpenclasses,andthebarjumpshallconsistofabarbetween2and21⁄2 inches squarewiththefouredgesroundedsufficientlytoremoveanysharpness.Thebarshallbepaintedaflatblackandwhiteinalternatesectionsofabout3incheseach.Thebarshallbesupportedbytwouncon-nected4-footuprightpostsabout5feetapart.Thebarshallbeadjustableforeach2inchesofheightfrom8inchesto36inches,andthejumpshallbesoconstructedandpositionedthatthebarcanbeknockedoffwithoutdisturbingtheuprights.
Directed Jumping Scoring —Adogmustreceiveascoreofzeroforthefollowing:anticipatingthehandler’scommandand/orsignaltogoout,notleavingthehandler,notgoingoutbetweenthejumps,notstoppingoncommandandremainingatleast10feetbeyondthejumps,anticipatingthehandler’scommandand/orsignaltojump,notjumpingasdirected,knockingthebarofftheuprights,andclimb-ing or using the top of the high jump for aid in going over.
Substantialdeductionsshallbemadeforadogthatdoesnotstopintheapproximatecenteroftheringabout20feetbeyondthejumps,foradogthatturns,stopsorsitsbeforethehandler’scommandtosit and for a dog that fails to sit.
Substantialorminordeductions,dependingontheextent,shallbemadeforslownessingoingoutorfortouchingthejumps,orforanydisplayofhesitationorreluctancetojump.AllofthepenaltieslistedunderNoviceRecallshallalsoapply.Moving Stand and Examination —Theprincipalfeaturesoftheexercisearethatthedogheel,standandstayoncommandbythemovinghandler,accepttheexaminationwithoutshynessorresentment,and,oncommand,returntothehandler.
Ordersfortheexerciseare“forward,”“standyourdog,”givenwhilethehandleriswalking,and“callyourdogtoheel.”
The handler stands with the dog sitting in the heel position at a point indicated by the judge. The judgeasks,“Areyouready?”andorders“Forward.”Thehandlercommandsorsignalsthedogtoheelandwalksbrisklyatanormalpace.Afterthehandlerhasproceededabout10feetthejudgeorders“Standyourdog.”Thehandler,withoutpausing,commandsand/orsignalsthedogtostand,continuesforward10to12feetandturnsaround,eithertotherightorleft,andstandsfacingthedog.Thedogmuststandand stay in position.
Thejudgeapproachesthedogfromthefrontandexaminesthedogbygoingoveritwithhis/herhandsasindogshowjudgingexceptthatinnocircumstancesshalltheexaminationincludethedog’s

mouthortesticles.(ThisshouldbedoneinthemannerofStandforExamination.Thejudgewilltouchthedog’shead,body,andhindquarters.)
Thejudgethenorders“Callyourdogtoheel,”whereuponthehandlercommandsand/orsignalsthedogtoreturntotheheelposition.Thedogimmediatelyreturnsinabriskmannertotheproperheelposition beside the handler.
Moving Stand and Examination Scoring —Ascoreofzeroisrequiredforthefollowing:Adogdisplayingfearorresentment,movingfromtheplacewhereitwasleft,sittingorlyingdownbeforebe-ingcalled,growlingorsnappingatanytimeduringtheexercise,repeatedwhiningorbarking,thedog’sfailuretoheel,standandstay,acceptthejudge’sexamination,orreturntothehandler.
Substantialtominordeductions,dependingonthecircumstances,mustbemadeforadogthatmovesitsfeetrepeatedlywhileremaininginplace,orforadogthatreturnscloseenoughtothehandlersothatthehandlercouldreadilytouchthedog’sheadwithoutmovingeitherfootorhavingtostretch,but not to the heel position.
AllappropriatepenaltiesoftheNoviceHeelFree,StandforExamination,andRecallexercisesshallapply.Minororsubstantialpenalties,dependingonextent,shallbemadeforthehandlerthatchangesthemannerofwalkingorhesitatesorpauseswhilegivingthecommandand/orsignaltostand,orifthedogfailstoreturnbrisklyorsitproperlyintheheelposition.
