Guiding the Reading

SupportShow pictures of a full moon, a half or quartermoon, and a crescent moon. Identify each phaseas you point to it. Encourage students to drawnight scenes that show each of these phases. Then have students share the drawings with thegroup and identify each phase, using completesentences: This is a moon.

Digging DeeperNonfiction Feature: DiagramHave students turn to page 10 and examine thediagram. Explain that a diagram is a drawing orplan that shows the parts of something or howsomething works. Point out that the purpose ofthis diagram is to show where the sun and moonare in relation to Earth. Explain that all of thesmaller circles represent the moon at differenttimes as it moves around Earth. Tell students thatdiagrams use labels to identify objects or the partsof something, and have students read the labels.Ask them to tell what they learned from thediagram. Then invite students to draw a diagramof an object in the classroom (for example, adesk) and label the parts.

Options for Further Instruction

WritingWrite Informational Text

Ask students to use their completed reproducibleto write an informational paragraph about themoon. Tell students to choose one or two of theanswers they found most interesting and to write3–4 sentences that explain the facts they learned.

Before ReadingFocus Attention• Display the cover, and read aloud the title and

author’s name. Encourage students to discusswhat they know about the moon. Have studentsbrainstorm moon-related words they might find inthe book.

• Have students identify the genre. Tell them thatnonfiction has certain features to help the readerunderstand the information. Point out theboldface word meteorites on page 6. Explain thatin this book, a boldface word is defined in theglossary in the back of the book. Tell students thata glossary contains definitions of key words in abook. Have students predict which of theirbrainstormed words might be in the glossary.

• Explain that photographs are another feature foundin nonfiction. Have students turn to pages 8–9.Point out the two photographs. One photograph is the background for the whole page. Exlain thatthe second photograph in the circle is called aninset. It is a photograph placed on top of a largerphotograph, and it provides a close-up of somepart of the larger photo.

Vocabulary• Explain to students that the noun orbit on page 9

means “the path of a body, such as a planet, as itrevolves around another body.” If something is inorbit, it is moving in an orbit around something.Have students brainstorm other things that are inorbit. Then discuss what it means when the spaceshuttle is in orbit.

Other Words to Know• astronauts (p. 8): “people who have been trained

to fly in outer space”

• craters (p. 5): “holes in the ground that areshaped like a bowl”

• telescope (p. 2): “a device that makes objectslook closer”

Ask and Answer QuestionsTell students that good readers ask themselvesquestions as they read informational text, and theylook for the answers in the text. Explain that askingand answering questions helps readers better

understand and remember information they read.Read aloud page 5, and model for students how toask and answer questions:

The first sentence says, The moon is covered withmountains and craters. I don’t know the wordcraters, and the rest of the paragraph doesn’t reallyexplain what craters are. What is a crater? The wordcraters is in boldface, so that word must be in theglossary. Let me check. [Turn to glossary and readdefinition.] So now I understand what a crater is.Now I have another question: How does the moonget its light? I’m going to write down my questionand look for an answer as I continue reading.

As students read the book, have them write otherquestions they may have on sticky notes and usethem to mark places where they have questionsabout the information they are reading.

During ReadingPrompt for understanding, as appropriate. Possibleprompts include the following:

• What question are you thinking about now?

• Look at the pictures to help you figure out the word.

• Reread and think about a word that would makesense here.

After ReadingAsk and Answer QuestionsAsk students to use their sticky notes to complete thereproducible on the back cover. Then have studentsshare with a partner their questions and answers.Encourage students to discuss where in the text theyfound the answers to their questions. Then havestudents tell how the strategy of asking and answeringquestions helped them better understand andremember the text.

Discuss the TextMake Inferences Have students brainstorm reasonspeople long ago might have thought that the moonwas made of cheese.

Compare and Contrast Have students comparethe photographs of the moon and Earth on pages 11and 13. Ask students to indicate how the two objectsare alike (both are round), and how they aredifferent. (The moon has dark spots, which aremountains and craters; Earth looks blue because most of its surface is water.)

Draw Conclusions Discuss with students whypeople and rabbits can’t live on the moon. Guidestudents to understand that people and rabbits needair to live. Then ask students how they think theastronaut on page 9 can breathe on the moon. Ask:What is he carrying on his back?

Phonics Mini-lessonLong i (i_e)• Explain that the long vowel sound i sounds like

the i in bite. Tell students that today’s lesson willfocus on the long i vowel sound in words spelledwith the CVCe pattern.

• Write the word wire and point to the letters w-i-r-eas you identify the consonant–vowel–consonant–silent e pattern. Remind students that in words thatend with a silent e, the letter e is not pronounced.

• Write CVCe on the board. Then have studentsbrainstorm rhyming words that contain the long isound and follow the CVCe pattern. List the wordsstudents suggest, and then ask students topronounce each word.

• Ask partners to find words in The Moon thatcontain the long i sound with the CVCe pattern.(time, p. 2; shines, p. 5; meteorites, p. 6; miles, p. 7;wide, p. 7; inside, p. 7) Have them list the wordson paper and then write CVCe above thecorresponding letters in the words.

Reread and AssessAs students reread and discuss the book, watch forthe following reading behaviors:

• Does the student ask and answer questions whilereading the text?

• Does the student use the glossary to look upboldface words?

• Does the student recognize the sound of long iand the CVCe spelling pattern?
