MY MATH TOOL KIT

The Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice describe eight habits of mind teachers must incorporate into classroom instruction to develop depth of understanding of critical mathematical concepts in their students. Mathematical Practice 5 states that mathematically proficient students use appropriate tools strategically. Students should consider the available tools when solving a mathematical problem and decide which tools might be helpful. In K-2 students should begin with physical objects (manipulatives) before moving to drawings and diagrams (number lines, number grids etc.), paper and pencil and other available technologies.

This file contains tools suitable for use in K-2 classrooms. Select the tools best suited to your grade level to allow students to make choices as they represent and explore math ideas and ensure that materials are available when needed.

Tips:Gradually introduce new tools one at a time and model different ways each tool can be used - make a class chart showing different ways students can use math tools to extend their learning after set work has been completed (see ‘I can’ example on p.5).

Copy tools on cardstock and laminate to ensure they can be reused next year.

Store tools in durable storage bags or plastic boxes and number each kit.

Number the back of each tool to match the number of the tool kit it belongs in so that misplaced tools can be easily returned.

Assign a math tool kit to each set of math partners to encourage students to take responsibility for care of their tools.

Stick of 10 snap cubes

Pencil boxes or durable storage bags are ideal for storing math tools.
