for the week of May 19-27, 2018

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week: “Lord, send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth!” We only know that the wind exists because of what it does. A gentle breeze felt on our face or watching a tree swaying or swirling snow-flakes all prove the existence of "something" causing these things to happen. But, apart from its effects, we cannot see the origin or substance of wind. The Holy Spirit is the wind of God. Watching an early Church emerge, people coming to believe, disciples of Jesus change the way they live and conduct their affairs-all give witness to the presence of the Holy Spirit. Observing the courage and conviction of those who have found faith, working for justice, feeding the poor, seeing how wounds are healed-all point to some-thing greater than ourselves working and living among us. How do our lives give witness to the Spirit? Catholic Quotes—Words to Inspire the Faithful: “The wind and fire of the Holy Spirit must continually break down those barriers that we continue to build between us; we must continually pass from Babel to Pentecost.” ~Pope Benedict XVI Rosary: The month of May is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. At the suggestion of the Liturgy Planning Committee, the rosary will be recited fifteen minutes before the weekend Masses. All are invited to arrive early to Mass in order to join this special devotion.

LET US PRAY…

Please remember in your prayers those members of our parish who are in the hospital, sick at home, in a nursing home, or who have requested our prayers. We also ask you to pray for those who have died. May the Lord strengthen their family and friends during this difficult time. A full list of prayer requests may be found on our web site: marymotherofmercy.com

Upcoming Events: (continued) • Grand Adventure by Bus: Visit Our Lady of Victory national shrine (Fr. Baker shrine) and the Buffalo-Erie County Botanical Gardens in Lackawanna on Tuesday, June 19.

Pentecost Sunday: The Easter Season concludes with the Evening Prayer (Vespers) of Pentecost. The Easter candle will then be placed near the bap-tismal font where it is displayed with honor through the rest of the liturgical year.

Guest Speaker Today: This weekend we welcome Tony Magliano, an internationally syndicated social justice and peace columnist, who will address the assembly after the final prayer at each of the Masses. His theme is to clearly explain how prayerful reflections upon the ancient wisdom of the Gospel, and the modern principles of Catholic social teaching, can effectively guide a consistent, logical, and life-affirming approach to the moral issues facing humanity in the twenty-first century.

Diocesan Missions Sunday: For over fifty years the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Sisters of Mercy have provided missionary work in Brazil and Chile. This weekend, May 19 and 20, we call upon all to help the sisters with your prayers and a sacrificial gift. A second collection will be taken up next Sunday so that the sisters may be supported in continuing to bring Christ into a world where darkness, despair, and emptiness prevail. Thank You: The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord (Ascension Thursday, May 10) was enhanced by socials after each of the Masses. We owe a debt of gratitude to the organizers: Ronnie Fairclough for providing juice and pastries at the 9:00 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross; Janice McLaughlin for both strawberry and peach shortcakes at the 12:15 Mass at St. Francis; and Camille Taranto for the amaretto coffee, amaretto cheese cakes, and cannoli at the 7:00 p.m. Mass at St. James. They were each great gatherings for our parishioners on this feast day. Flowers for the Blessed Virgin Mary: Each weekend of May families and parishioners are invited to honor Mary by bringing flowers to be placed at the statue of Mary during the beginning of Mass. There is a sign-up sheet in each of the churches to reserve a weekend in May. Flowers can be from your garden or purchased. Please consider honoring Mary in this special way. Music Festival: This Sunday, May 20, the Seneca Summer Music Festival will present, in concert, the Genesee Symphony Orchestra with S. Shade Zajac as conductor. The performance will be in the auditorium of South Seneca Central High School, Ovid. The festival starts at 5:00 p.m. and admission is free. Easter Duty: “All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year.” (Church Law #920) In reference to this law the Easter season is considered from the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday (this year May 27). Parish Council Nominations: During the month of May we ask parishioners to nominate themselves or others for membership on the Parish Council. The

council meets a minimum of four times a year. Members are assigned, after expressing their preference, to one of the standing committees: Word, Worship, Witness, and Fellowship. This year the council needs to select two members from St. Francis Solanus and two members from Holy Cross. The council also needs an alternate from each of the three churches. The selection of new members will take place on the weekend of May 27. The final meeting of the council for this year will be June 21 at which the new members will be present. 2017–2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA): This year’s CMA appeal concludes at the end of the month of May. On May 11 it was reported that our parishioners have pledged $30,463 toward the parish goal of $30,549. We have reached 99.72% of our goal. Our appreciation goes to the 141 households who have participated in the CMA and a special expression of gratitude to parishioners who made outstanding contributions and some who made extraordinary contributions. All parish households are invited and encouraged to make a pledge. Participation is primary. What is pledged is secondary. If you have not yet participated in the CMA, please obtain a CMA envelope located in the foyer of the church and make a pledge according to your means. Thank you. Personal Care Products Collection: During the month of May donations of personal care items for the clients of our local food pantries are being solicited. While many personal care items are donated to the food pantries throughout the year, additional attention is being paid to these items that are needed on a constant basis. Personal care products that are needed include soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, body soap or washes, shaving soap, razors, and deodorants. This special collection will end May 27. Sharing the Light Award Dinner: The Catholic Charities of the Finger Lakes sponsors the “Sharing the Light” award dinner to honor those who give so much of their time and talent to the betterment of our community. This year, our parishioner, Phyllis Motill, will be one of the recipients of the award. The event, at $50 per person, will take place Thursday, June 14, at the Hobart and William Smith College, Geneva, N.Y. beginning at 5:30 p.m. For more information phone Rhonda at 315 789 2686 X 104. Register on website at https://www.catholiccharitiesfl.org. Grand Adventure: St. Mary’s of the Lake Parish, Watkins Glen, is hosting a bus trip to Our Lady of Victory National Shrine (Fr. Baker Shrine) and the Buffalo-Erie County Botanical Gardens in Lackawanna on Tuesday, June 19. Cost is $40 and you should bring your own lunch. For more information and reservations phone 607 525 2786. Summer Faith Formation Program: The parish’s summer religious education program will run from Monday, August 13, through Friday, August 17. Each day will begin at 8:30 a.m. and last until 3:30 p.m. at the St. Fidelis Friary boathouse, 153 County Road 153, Interlaken. There is a fee of $50 per child, with discounts if siblings are attending. Do not let the registration fee prevent your child from attending. If you have questions please contact Helen Arco at [email protected]. The registration form is available online through a link from the parish’s web page version of the bulletin. Cancer Services Program: Cortland and Tompkins Counties offer free cancer screenings to those who are uninsured or have health insurance that does not cover these screenings. For more information, call 866-442-2262.
