Yesterday the school celebrated Harmony Day; a day to recognise and celebrate Australia and our school’s cultural diversity. The activities completed in class support inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone, and in light of recent world events it has never been a more important message. We are proud of our school’s diversity and inclusiveness, and while we may have had a dedicated date to wear orange accessories, the truth is that every day is Harmony Day at Kings Langley Public School.

Well done to our whole team on this fantastic achievement! On top of this, a special congratulations must go to Amelia H for finishing 3rd in the Junior girls age championship, despite being a year younger than the girls who finished first and second, Aleks K for winning the Junior boys age championship with Max A in 3rd place, Cooper F who finished 2nd in the 11 years boys age championships with Aidan S in 3rd place, Emma F who finished 4th in the Senior girls age championship with Zoe D in 5th, and Aidan H who finished 2nd in the Senior boys age champion-ship. Well done to all these superstars! From this carnival, the top swimmers got to progress to the Sydney West Championships where I was fortunate to have a front row seat. The level of competition at this carnival is incredibly high, as is the quality of swimmers, and students who were able to represent at this level should feel incredibly proud. Congratulations to the students listed above for being able to represent our school at such an elite level.

I would like to particularly congratulate Aiden H on qualifying for the State Championships in the 100m Freestyle. This is a huge achievement and we are incredibly proud of his accomplishments. To be one of the top 3 swimmers in all of Sydney West is truly remarkable, and we wish him the very best at the State titles.

Last Friday our wonderful P&C hosted the first school disco for the year. The circus theme was well and truly embraced by all who attended (including Mrs Chapman and Miss Kelly!) and it was a fun night for all. I would like to thank the army of parent volunteers who helped on the night to ensure it was a success. The money raised will go directly towards our P&C who support the school through a range of donations. The most recent work the P&C have helped the school with is through a donation to support the installation of softfall underneath the

play equipment at Port Place. The softfall meets with Kidsafe standards, ensuring the play equipment is as safe as possible for our students. Furthermore, the bright colours add to the feel of the school, creating a more warm and welcoming environment for our

students.

In 2019, students in Year 3 and 5 will once again complete their NAPLAN assessments in an online format. In time, the NAPLAN assessments will be completed online in all NSW schools, and it is incredibly beneficial for our students to be involved in this process from the outset. On March 27, students will participate in a practice NAPLAN test. This test has a number of functions, primarily to test that our network can support the test platform and to familiarise our students with the types of questions that they may experience in the actual NAPLAN test so that their results are a more accurate reflection of their ability. No individual student results will be recorded and neither will the schools performance. The practice test is purely that; a practice. A sample of results across the state will be used as part of an equating study to compare online results to paper based tests to ensure that they are comparable, but this will still not involve recording individual or school results. The official NAPLAN tests will be completed for students in Year 3 and 5 between May 14 and May 20. More information on this can be found later in this newsletter. The school has been working on adjusting the way that we report to parents. There are two main changes that will take effect for our Semester 1 reports this year.

Grades Previously the school reported against indicators on a 3 point scale of Competent, Developing and Beginning. This scale showed students who could complete an identified skill, and those who were still at different stages of working towards it. These grades were also supplemented with a student’s performance of Outstanding, High, Sound, Basic or Limited in English and Mathematics. In the new reports, all indicators for students in Year 1-6 will be reported on a 5 point scale. Students who are able to achieve a skill will be awarded a grading of ‘Sound’. This means that they have demonstrated the skill at an appropriate level for their stage of develop-ment. Receiving a ‘Sound’ grading is a good thing, as it means that your child is exactly where they are expected to be for that particular skill compared to students across the state. Students being awarded a grading of ‘Outstanding’ or ‘High’ are working beyond their expected stage of development. This is obviously a hard grade to achieve and there will be fewer students achieving the top grade than what we previously had. Please keep in mind, however, that the top grade previously indicated that students were achieving the outcomes, which would be a ‘Sound’ under the new criteria. Students achieving a ‘Basic’ or ‘Limited’ grading are below their stage of development and support is being put in place in classrooms to help these students work towards stage appropriate outcomes. Overall gradings on the 5 point scale will be issued for all Key Learning Areas, not just English and Mathematics.

Students in Kindergarten will be graded on a 3 point scale- ‘Working towards’, ‘Working at’ and ‘Working beyond’. Students achieving a ‘Working towards’ grading are still developing stage appropriate skills in that area. Students achieving a ‘Working at’ grading have demonstrated stage appropriate skills in that area. Students achieving a ‘Working beyond’ grading have demonstrated capabilities beyond their stage of development in that particular aspect of their learning. Outcome Statements The school has always used content from what they are teaching to measure student results. We are re-addressing these content descriptors in the reports to guarantee that they are explicitly linked to syllabus documents. In doing this, we are also endeavouring to put the content in parent-friendly language so that you will be able to easily identify what skills your child is performing well in, and any areas where they may need support. Gradings on students effort, commitment to learning and social development will all remain, as will the general comment at the end of each report. If you have any questions about the changes to reports, please do not hesitate to contact me through the office. Semester 1 Reports will be out late in Term 2.

NAPLAN at KLPS 2019

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy – important skills that each child needs to succeed in school and life. The

NAPLAN tests are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their literacy and numeracy

development. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of

language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

Between 14 -20 May, 2019 our school will participate in NAPLAN Online. Students do not need to be computer

experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills is part of our school curriculum,

and our teachers will ensure your child is familiar with the online format. To see the types of questions and

interactive features of NAPLAN Online, visit the public demonstration site.

All tests except the writing test for Year 3 will be computer-based assessments. The writing test for Year 3 will be

paper-based. Teachers will ensure that students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate

support and guidance.

All Year 3 and 5 students will complete a practice test on Wednesday 27 March, 2019. No results are reported for this. It is a familiarisation activity with the online format and a technical test of our devices and the system. A sample of students will also be involved in an equating test in the period two weeks before the actual tests. No

individual results are reported from this equating test. Each year a different selection of sampled schools is needed.

The sample ensures a diverse range of student backgrounds and abilities is represented and ensures the validity of

the NAPLAN measurement scales.

KEEP COUGHING KIDS HOME AND SEE YOUR GP Whooping cough (also called pertussis) began increasing across NSW towards the end of 2018, especially in children between the ages of 5 and 14 years. NSW Health anticipates that this increase will continue into 2019. School-aged children who are infected with whooping cough usually experience a troubling cough that can persist for months, but they rarely get severe illness. However they can spread the infection to younger siblings and other more vulnerable people who are at higher risk of severe disease. Whooping cough can be a life threatening infection in babies. What can you do to prevent whooping cough? 1. Make sure vaccinations are up to date for all family members. 2. Be alert for symptoms of whooping cough. 3. Keep coughing kids home to prevent them spreading the infection to others and see

your GP to get them tested for whooping cough. For more information on whooping cough and vaccination visit the NSW Health Website https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/whoopingcough/Pages/default.aspx STEWART HOUSE DONATION DRIVE - Today students took home an envelope for the Stewart House Donation Drive. We ask that you place $2 in the envelope, complete the entry details on the back of the envelope and return to the red box in the office before Friday May 10. Waste Warriors for 2019

At Kings Langley Public School we are continuing to make efforts to reduce our general waste by changing our green waste into compost. The students listed below have volunteered to be an integral part of the school’s composting system. Their daily responsibility is to collect the green waste from the classroom and bring it to the composting area. They also advise the class on how to reduce food waste and ensure the correct type of waste is entering the school’s composting system. They are all Wonderful Waste Warriors!

Kindergarten classes will select their Waste Warriors in Term 2 to join the rest of the school in becoming a more sustainable school. The SRC have decided to introduce Waste Free Wednesdays every week. This follows on from the Waste Free Challenge in 2018. This is admirable for our leaders of the school to recognise the environmental benefits of reducing our general waste. I encourage the entire school community to support Waste Free Wednesday enthusiastically and continue to make behavioural changes to improve our environment.

Simba’s Pride

Dear Parents

Mrs Hutton and the Musical crew need you. We need parents who

can sew, stick, glue, build and create.

As you can imagine Simba’s Pride is quite a complex musical and

relies heavily on props such as giant puppets, animals and of course

‘Pride Rock.’

If you are willing and able to assist in the making of any of these

things or know someone who can we would love to hear from you.

Please contact Mrs Hutton in the office during school hours for

more information.
