How is 6th Grade Different?

Sixth Grade Success!

We are busy planning and enthusiastically anticipating your 6th grade school year! We want to prepare each student for the challenges that lie ahead in 6th grade. More is expected from our students with each passing year, especially in terms of independ-ence, study and organizational skills. As parents, your continued support and communication with the teachers will enable your child to have a productive and successful year.

Expect more homework

STMA 6th graders can expect about one hour of homework each night. So set aside time each night to work on your homework.With your outside activities, don’t forget to balance your practice and games with homework and studying. Set aside time each night in a quiet place where you will not be interrupted or dis-tracted. More is expected of you in taking responsibility for as-signments and deadlines. We have higher expectations for 6th graders than 5th graders.

Prepare the night before

Double check your planner to make sure every assignment is completed. Pack your book bag the night before so you don’t forget anything. There is nothing worse than doing the work, forgetting it at home and not getting full credit for it.

Use your Agenda Planner

You will receive an agenda planner on the first day of school. Your planner must be with you at all times. Make notes in it so you can better remember what you need to do when you get home. Your planner is also where your passes are located. If planners are lost or damaged, students will be required to pur-chase a new one ($5.00 charge).

Just for Parents

ParentVUE

ParentVUE offers online access to information which includes your child’s grades, attendance, discipline, lunch account and emergency information. Parents who do not already have a ParentVUE access code are encouraged to sign up by contacting the school office.

Communicating with Teachers

In addition to attending school conferences, emailing your child’s teachers is one of the quickest and easiest ways to communicate. You can email the teachers through the school website or ParentVUE.

The website makes it easy for students and their par-ents to get current information including announce-ments, upcoming events, and many other aspects of school life.
