While it was a little touch and go, it turns out there was just enough snow for Jocelyn’s annual Snow Day, sponsored by the Jocelyn Recreation, at the Mounta-inview Centennial Park. It was a fun way to spend the Sunday afternoon, for children, adults and snowmen alike. While it was mostly the younger kids having fun, colouring the snow, constructing the snowman and sledding down the hill, adults too enjoyed the relatively warm weather made warmer by the fire with BBQ hot dogs, and hot chocolate along with a vast assortment of baked treats. Who can resist a hot dog cooked over a fire on a warm winter day?

From afar it looked like there wasn’t enough snow on the hill, with grass peeking out over half of it, but the side shaded from the sun still had plenty of packed in snow that melted enough, but not too much, for maximum sledability.

By the time you are reading this week’s Clippings, a lot more snow has since fallen, and the park will still be open. You will not find free hot dogs and other treats, but you can certainly bring your own and explore the park at your leisure. Besides sledding, there are lots of trails for snow shoeing and cross-country skiing. You don’t have to wait until the next official “Snow Day” to have a snow day of your own.

Red Squirrel

These medium sized squirrels are smaller than the grey squirrels we were used to see-ing prior to moving here. What these smaller squirrels lack in size they make up in mean-ness – see picture.

American red squirrels are widely distribut-ed across North America. They mainly eat seeds but have been observed eating bird eggs and even young snowshoe hares. When born they weigh only 10 grams compared to the 200-250g adults weigh. Nests are con-structed in the branches of tress with grass. Each squirrel will have several nests within its territory, moving between them. Red squirrels have a very high mortality rate with only 22% surviving to one year old. If they make it to a year old, their life expectancy is only 2.3 years with a maximum lifespan of 8.

Considering they can live to 8 but only av-erage 2.3, it comes as no surprise they are hunted by numerous animals. Birds of prey such as owls and hawks and even crows will make a meal of them. Other mammals such as bobcats, foxes and coyotes will also prey on them.

Despite the fact not many are making it to old age, they are not a conservation concern throughout most of their range and are com-mon in many places.

Recipe Corner Egg Roll In A Bowl Ingredients

1 pound ground pork 1 – 16-ounce bag coleslaw mix (shredded carrots and cabbage) 5 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon ginger, minced 1/2 cup soy sauce 2 tablespoons sesame oil Green onions, for garnish

Directions

1. In a small bowl, combine the garlic, ginger, soy sauce and sesame oil. Set aside. 2. In a large skillet, brown the pork over medium-high heat. 3. Add the shredded cabbage and carrots, and stir to combine. 4. Add the sauce mixture to the meat and veggies. Stir and cook for about 3 to 5 minutes, until the cabbage has just begun to wilt but is still crunchy. 5. Serve over rice,or wonton chips (recipe below) garnished with green onions if desired.

Ingredients

Wonton wrappersvegetable or olive oilsalt

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees 2. Spray baking sheets with nonstick spray 3. Cut wonton wrappers into rectangles or triangles, arrange onto baking sheets and with a brush, lightly covere them with oil and sprinkle a bit of salt on top. 4. Bake at 400 for 5-7 minutes, until golden and bubbly. Keep watch on them so they don’t burn!

BREAK AND ENTER IN PROGRESS OPP CHARGE MALE AND FEMALE

(TARBUTT-TARBUTT ADDITIONAL TOWNSHIP, ON)- On January 18, 2018, members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Sault Ste Marie OPP Canine Unit responded to a Break and Enter in progress at a construc-tion business near the junction of Highway 548 and Highway 17 in Tarbutt-Tarbutt Additional Township.

Shortly after 6:00 a.m., a male and female at-tended the construction business on Highway 17. The male wearing a disguise entered through a window and stole electronic equipment and electronic devices that he placed in a garbage bin and were carried outside the building. The female retrieved the items and placed them in the car. An audible alarm was tripped when a door was opened and the owner of the property attended his business. The female fled the prop-erty in the car and the male fled on foot. The male then attended a residence on MacLennan Road and managed to get a ride to a residence in Laird Township but before he left that residence he stole an electronic device.

With the assistance from Sault Ste Marie OPP the male and female were located shortly after 8:00 a.m. at a residence on Government in Laird Township.

The investigation is continuing.

As a result of the investigation, Brian WING, 34 years of age from Laird Township, Ontario was charged with:

Break, Enter, and Commit Theft, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC); Theft Over $5000, contrary to section 334(a) of the CC; Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC; Possession of Break in Instruments, contrary to section 351(1) of the CC; Disguise with Intent, contrary to section 351(2) of the CC; Theft Under $5000, contrary to section 334(a) of the CC; and with

Possession of Property Obtained by Crime contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail Court in Blind River on January 19, 2018. He was remanded into cus-tody and transported to the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre in Sault Ste Marie.

Christina ARMSTRONG, 36 years of age, from Aweres Township, Ontario, was charged with:

Break, Enter, and Commit Theft, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC); Theft Over $5000, contrary to section 334(a) of the CC; Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC; and with Possession of Break in Instruments, contrary to section 351(1) of the CC.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail Court in Blind River on January 19, 2018. She was released on a Recog-nizance of Bail and is scheduled to appear be-fore the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on February 1, 2018.

OBITUARY

Nicole Angela Pelland, at the age of 47 on January 12 2018. Loving daughter of Nicolette and James Dingman of St. Jo-seph Island. Partner and best friend of Michel (Mike) Bonen-fant Sudbury . She leaves bei-hind her son Nicholas also of Sudbury. Brother Faron, sister in law Yvonne of Matheson and nieces Ashlyn of Ottawa and Erica of Toronto. Also many aunts, uncles and cousins. Nicole loved to visit St. Joseph Island when she could. She had great love and empathy for all animals and enjoyed doing her needlework. Many thanks to the St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre in Sudbury and Health Sciences North Sudbury for their wonderful care and compassion. Cremation has taken place and Nicole will be interned on the Island in the spring.
