60-70 people enjoyed a great day at the St. Joseph Island Free Methodist Church Saturday. Thanks to Marney Stewart for the great photos and write up below:

Many came out on Saturday, February 9th to enjoy the Family Winter Fun Day at the St. Joseph Island Free Methodist Church. Sled-ding began at 3pm and the young and “young at heart” took turns going down the hill on sleds, GTs, toboggans, crazy carpets and flying saucers. A hot chocolate station was set nearby when a warm-up was needed.

everyone had worked up an appetite and gathered inside the church fellowship hall for a supper of hot-dogs, chips, salads and desserts. There was much visiting and many games, such as Pictionary, Apples to Apples, Crazy 8’s, Pie Face, Jenga and Dutch Blitz were played! It was a wonderful fami-ly event and a great way to get out and enjoy some fun in the fresh air during the winter! Thanks to everyone who made the day possible!

The Parish of St. Joseph & St. George is at it again! This time we’re not “rocking”...we’re walk-ing! We will be walking for The Coldest Night of the Year 2019 event. It takes place on Saturday, February 23rd, 5pm, at St. Vincent Place to raise money and awareness about the issues of hun-ger and homelessness that, unfortunately, touch many people around us.

Why are we walking? Well, according to the Cold-est Night of the Year website, “By walking at dusk during a cold winter’s night, you’ll feel a hint of the challenge faced by those experiencing home-lessness during winter. By fundraising, you’ll be contributing much-needed money to a charity in your town that is bringing hope and help to people in your community who need support.”

Creature FeatureMourning Dove

The mourning dove is one of the most abundant birds in North America, even though it’s a popular game bird and more than 20 million are taken by hunters each year its population is estimated around 475 million. They are widespread throughout North America, from Canada and Alaska down to Central and South America, though many subspecies and similar species such as the white-winged dove and the Eurasian collared dove overlap in the western and southern parts of the continent.

Mourning doves are found in almost every type of open and semi-open habitats, except for the deep woods and swamps. They commonly nest in trees, in cities and farmlands, and sometimes even on win-dowsills where homeowners can watch the babies, which are usually two per brood, grow. They are monogamous and in warmer climates can produce up to 6 clutches of eggs a breeding season. Their diet consists almost exclusively of seeds, which they will gobble down and store in their crops until they can fly somewhere safe to digest. The most seeds found inside of a crop were 17,200 bluegrass seeds. They usually eat around 20 percent of their body weight in a single day, which is only around 71 calories.

While adopting the postal service’s motto, “neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds,” the Island Market strives to fulfill the requests of its customers.

Store manager, Mike Bohms, states that there is a real buzz in the store when delivery was announced, “Shop-pers are remarking to me that there was a definite need for grocery delivery given our inclement weather and customer needs.” The Island Market prides itself on meeting customer needs and when the island needed grocery delivery, Mike remarks, “We were happy to oblige!”
