Junior Riika Induction

For Term 3

Important Dates

Michael Lessels takes on Land Search and Rescue Training

On the 19th and 20th May Michael participated in the first phase of a three phase Land Search and Rescue Training exercise at a remote location south of Hermannsburg on the Palm Valley National Park.

This training exercise was an inter- unit ( emergency ser-vices) multi-agency (Police, Health Clinics, Fire, Ambulance, Indigenous Rangers programs, Local Councils, Remote Com-munity members and Parks and Wildlife).

The aim of this training was to gain knowledge in base line Land Search and Rescue techniques, orientated around Land Search, Forensic Search and Night Search using map and compass, GPS, First Aid Triage, Indigenous tracking skills and team work.

At the end of this exercise individuals were voted by their peers on the basis of leadership potential to attend phase 3 a specialised leadership course in Emergency Management. Michael was voted to do this course by his peers and he participated in the leadership course at the NTES HQ train-ing complex on the 1st and 2nd July with 16 other partici-pants, which he completed successfully.

Dear Parents,

Our Year 10 students have returned from Mittagundi and for many of our students it can be a life changing experience, and as our parents have informed us so can the Year 11 Lead-ership Course.

Ian Stapleton (the founder of Mitta-gundi) wanted to offer young people a place to get away from the complexi-ties of modern life and to offer them an experience where you live simply and work hard in the mountains.

Ian is an example of someone who took an opportunity to develop an environment where people mattered more than anything else. I hope that our students have taken from their camping experiences, an awareness that they are more resilient and brave than they thought. I hope also that this transfers to other areas in their life.

Some opportunities are only ever of-fered once, and it takes courage to ac-cept them. Through the hard work ofPrincipal past and present staff, St Philip’s is proud to be able to offer our students opportunities, not just locally but internationally; holistic op-portunities that prepare our students for the world past our College gates.

Yours sincerely,

Roger Herbert Principal

Girls’ Boarding News

What a lovely weekend with lots of fun and laughter. I really enjoyed it and I think the girls did too.

Activities began even before the weekend when Marsha, Lea and Leoni, the two new Gap students and eight boarders went to the basketball courts to complete a basic umpiring course. Many thanks to Deb from the basketball association who ran the course for them

and well done to everyone on completing it successfully.

On Friday evening while our senior girls went off to play in the town AFL competition, the juniors and I had a lovely campfire with s’mores, toasties and chocolate bananas. We were joined by Lea and Leoni and the new French exchange teacher Sylvie. Food was followed by numerous games of 40 40 Home Base and a French version of What Time is it Mr Wolf? It was such a lovely evening no one really wanted to go in and we stayed on the oval till nearly bed time.

On Saturday evening we had dinner in the quad, later followed by our postponed End of Term Party for Term 2. Holding it at the weekend, we had more time so we played lots of fun games and even some old fashioned games such as Pin the Tale on the Donkey went down very well with lots of screams and laughter.

On Sunday morning a group of girls got up early with Marsha to take part in the ABC running event, completing the 5km course. At the start of the year Mr Herbert promised to take out to dinner anyone who competed in ten events during the year and there are now a number of girls already very close to reaching this target.

As soon as they got back, some of them literally turned straight round and caught the bus again, this time to go tree planting with me. As it was National Tree Planting Day the council had asked for help planting 50 trees in the Francis Smith Park. The 8 girls worked well in teams and between them planted around 18 trees and it was great to see them doing something for the environment. After we had finished we walked over to the Community Garden where we used to have a plot and the girls decided they would like to once again have a veggie plot so we will get that organised.

There was a lot of netball played by our boarders again this weekend, with normal Saturday matches and Kiera, Ema and Mereoni also play-ing on Sunday in Alice Springs training sessions.

And to finish the weekend there was basketball training on Sunday night, ready for our team’s second town competition match tomor-row night.

The new $100.00 NT Government Sport Vouchers have arrived and can be collected from College Reception. The voucher’s expire

on 31 May, 2018.

Welcome to Term 3. It has been a great start to the term. This term we welcome Wayne Braun to the boarding house. We also have the pleasure of four exchange students; George, Cameron, Dan and Ish. On behalf of all the boys and staff, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new members. Make yourselves at home.

Week one saw a number of students on school camps. Our Year 10’s, Toshi and Raegan were at Mittagundi and Wollangara. Our Year 11’s, Phil, Imran, Hamish and Justin all enjoyed themselves on the Year 11 Leadership Course. Well done boys. By all accounts, all of the camps were a success and all the boys had a blast.

On Wednesday we were visited by St Catherine’s, a university board-ing campus located in Perth. It was an excellent presentation and all the boys were engaged and intrigued by what the presenters had to say. With a focus on indigenous students, St Catherine’s certainly offered a lot for prospective students.

On Saturday night the boys all went to the Telegraph Station for a BBQ dinner, some fun with the football and a hike up to Trigg Hill lookout. It was a fun and relaxing way for the boys to get back into the groove and reacquaint themselves with each other.

A reminder that if you are signing your student out for weekends or at night at any point, a ‘Leave Request’ form will need to be com-pleted on Reach by the Thursday prior. If for any reason this is a problem, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Also, we have Chapel on Sunday evenings at the Swag Chapel. Boarders who go out for the weekend are expected back by 5:30pm on Sundays to enjoy a meal together and attend Chapel.

Exeat this term is on Friday 25th August to Sunday 27th August. Here’s to a great term ahead.

Mittigundi 2017

Over the holiday break and during last week, 80 Year 10 students ventured to the high planes in country Victoria for the 10 day Mit-tagundi camp. Mittagundi is based in Glen Valley, about an hour from Omeo and is a pioneer style farm with no gas or electricity and they try to be as self sustainable as possible. Students experience open air living, farm life, survival in cold conditions and get to try many things that they have never tried before. All the equipment we used has been donated to Mittagundi and many young people from around Australia (and the world) donate their time to volunteer at the camp to ensure that it runs smoothly. Many past St Philip’s stu-dents have volunteered there over the years, including past students Monty Nixon and Bronte Altus whilst we were there.

The students got to experience four days in the snow at Mt Wills and McnNamara’s Hut, hiking, cross country skiing and living in tents at the snow. We fetched water from the local stream, cooked over open fires, ate lots of porridge and worked on making snowmen and giant snowballs on our play day in the snow. Back at the farm, in groups we helped sustain the farm and keep it running. We baked in the kitchen the daily meals and snacks, we chopped wood and col-lected kindling to keep the fires running, we tended to animals and learnt to milk cows. Important jobs needed to be done like fence fix-ing, pothole filling, weed and shrub clearing, as well as creating items to be used on the farm in the forge and the joinery, like tools, shower benches, etc. It wasn’t all work of course – there were dress-ups, games, music and singing, lots of laughs and fun at the snow.

We took a wonderful group of young people away with us and whilst some parts of the trip were challenging (ie the cold for many) we worked together as a team and now will have many great stories to tell for the future. Thank-you to Laura Robertson, Jessica Henman, Scott Fraser, Camille Bernardino, Joe Roberts and Tiana Bateman for their work in their respective groups and we look forward to many more great adventures at Mittagundi in years to come.

The Silent Sermon

A member of a certain church, who previously had been attendingservices regularly, suddenly stopped coming to church. After a fewweeks, the Pastor decided to visit. The Pastor found the man at home alone, sitting before a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for his Pastor’s visit, the man welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chairnear the fireplace and waited. The Pastor made himself at home butsaid nothing. In the grave silence, he contemplated the dance of theflames around the burning logs.

After some minutes, the Pastor took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone. Then he sat back in his chair, still silent. The host watched all this in quiet contemplation. As the one lone ember’s flame flick-ered and diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and lifeless. The Pastor glanced at his watch and realized it was time to leave, he slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow, once more with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it.

As the Pastor reached the door to leave, his host said with tears run-ning down his cheek, “Thank you so much for your visit and especiallyfor the fiery sermon, I shall be back in church next Sunday”.

We live in world today which tries to say too much with too little.

Consequently, few listen. Sometimes the best sermons are the onesleft unspoken. What silent message would God have you share withsomeone today?. “Let your light shine before men in such a way thatthey may see your good works and glorify your Father which is inheaven” —— Matthew 5: 16

++++++A man may go to heaven…..Without health, without wealth:Without fame, without a great name:Without learning, without earnings,Without culture, without beauty”Without friends and without ten thousand other things——But he can NEVER go to heaven without Christ.
